The snow showed no sign of shifting and so Saturday was mostly spent with a cat slumped across my lap whilst I cracked on with my latest read, A Little Life, an epic tale following the lives of four friends from wildly different backgrounds living in New York. All the reviews say that it will break your heart and, as the characters are already so likeable, I'm afraid that it might (I never get weepy over films!)
I'd sold a couple of things on Vinted and keen to stretch our legs after a day of being snowbound, we walked to the parcel shop. It's less than a mile away but the snow had frozen solid and it took us over an hour to walk there and back. Although I don't love the snow, I like how friendly it makes everyone. Complimenting me on my wise choice of footwear, a fellow walker told us that we needed some power food after our trek, recommending cashews, almonds, honey and dates, a popular choice for the harsh winters of his childhood in Pakistan. Sadly, we only had honey and Maltese fig jam in the cupboard so we made do with a couple of biscuits.
Along with my "sensible footwear" (my hand-crafted Ilse Jacobsen wellies) I wore a vintage Hindu Kush Afghan dress over the sweater dress I'd bought from a charity shop earlier in the week, one of bastard massive sheepskin hats and this amazing fake fur vintage coat which was a gift from dear friends Lynn & Philip, originally belonging to Philip's mum. They were regulars at our stall at Stockport's Vintage Village and we didn't know them all that well when they gave me the coat, I was so touched by their kindness and always think of them when I wear it. It's very Cruella, don't you think?
While we ate our tea we started to watch Alan and Amanda's Greek Job which they were in the middle of filming whilst we were there. We had a horrible feeling that they'd bought the village house we wanted - fortunately it wasn't. For those who've never been, watch it and see why we love Corfu so much, it really is that beautiful!
With the pool closed for a sports event, on Sunday morning we lay in bed reading until 9am. After another frosty night and with it still trechorous underfoot, we weren't too upset not to have to risk life and limb by walking into town. It's Tony's 60th next month and all he says he wants for his birthday is a bit of sun, so most of the day was spent trawling the internet for inspiration, ending up more confused than when we started!
I wore a vintage Phool midi dress and a 1970s quilted waistcoat, also by Phool, changing into my wellies when I went outside...which wasn't for long. By now it was our 9th day of snow and I was so over it. A skiing holiday would be my idea of hell!
The evening was spent watching The Great Pottery Throwdown, joyful telly with lovely people...followed by To Catch A Killer, which definitely isn't.
Sunday's overnight rain washed the snow away and it was back to suede boots and floaty frocks when we walked down to the pool on Monday. I was so excited about my swim I'd been awake since 5am and did a happy dance in the middle of the road to celebrate being able to stay upright and to see tarmac again! We had a blissful and surprisingly quiet swim, still no sign of any newbies. I'm starting to think getting in shape for the New Year is no longer a thing now the NHS offer weight loss jabs.
This 1970s Dollyrockers dress has been in my wardrobe for longer than I've been blogging (17 years!) With temperatures risinf to a balmy 8°C, I only needed my bruise-coloured Rawhide coat atop my maxi....hooray! I customised my £2 bag (another of last week's finds) by threading an antique Liberty silk scarf through the chain strap, something I've seen chic European women do.
Passing through the Saddler's Centre, we remembered to have a look at the Jerome K Jerome clock, unveiled in 1990 but, after a series of mechanical problems, was removed by the council and put into storage, finally repaired and reinstated last Summer. The author of the 1889 novel, Three Men and a Boat is one of many famous people born in Walsall.
Have you ever seen a Mother-in-Law's Tongue in flower before? I've got seven, all of which originated from the same plant, but this is the first to do this. That floral spike smells gorgeous.
It looks like I'm in for a quiet few days. Jon's caught the sniffle I developed last week (which had all but gone within 48 hours) and is currently prostrate on the settee wrapped in a blanket. I'd better take him a cup of tea!

I'll take snow over rain. Love all your outfits.. the purple one makes you look ethereal. Hope Jon recovers quickly.
ReplyDeleteHello Hena! Snow's prettier than rain but I hate how it feels underfoot and how long it takes to walk anywhere! xxx
DeleteOur snow was a fleeting visitor, the rain has now set in and washed it all away.
ReplyDeleteI have known Sansevieria (MiL tongue) all my life (here and in Africa) and I have never seen one in flower - I am amazed!
Feel better soon - I thoroughly recommend the healing powers of a slumped-across-lap cat 😊
Lovely to hear from you, Kate! Its unusual for the Mildlands to have so much snow, I'm hoping that's it for the year now.
DeleteIsn't that flower fascinating? I wonder why its the only plant out of seven tat's followered and why the other two on the kitchen windowsill aren't flowering. Nature is a mystery!
My cold was short-lived, I expect Jon's won't be! William's lying on his lap as I type! xxx
I’m with you on the snow. It looks lovely and having a little one it is lovely for a day! Then, it just makes everything far more difficult than it needs to be. I adore that Dollyrockers maxi dress and those purple boots. Purple is my favourite colour.
ReplyDeleteP.s. that restaurant in my post says ‘Mediterranean’ which could mean anything but I’d hazard a guess at Turkish perhaps. Delicious anyway xxx
Yes, one day is just right, any more is just an inconvenience.
DeleteThere needs to be more purple, its a colour so rarely seen in this day and age.
I think Lebanese, Turkish, North African, Cypriot and Greek food are very similar, Mediteranean is a good all round description! xxx
We booked Corfu for May Vix, after thoroughly re-reading your advice on Greece from last year's email chat - thank you. We are currently looking at city flight/day trips, as we are within walking distance of Gatwick airport and don't mind an early start, it's do-able. We only had a smattering of snow, quite disappointing after all the hype, I had high expectations of getting out our sledges purchased about 15 years ago and yet to be used! Betty
ReplyDeleteYay! That's great news, Betty! I know you'll love Corfu! There was something about those one day trips on BBC Breakfast before Xmas, they're a great idea if you can get to the airport really early - breakfast in the UK, lunch somewhere warm and sunny!
DeleteThe Midlands rarely gets much snow, it was quite exciting for a day but I was sick of not being able to walk anywhere very quickly. I could have done with your sledge! xxx
I love the Great Pottery Throwdown too..Enjoyed the film 'The Great Escaper' on iplayer yesterday when it was chucking it down.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Escaper does look good! Toying with that soon! How wonderful is the Throwdown? Proper lovely tv! xxx
DeleteJon needs a cuppa and a warm cat on his lap! Get better soon!
ReplyDeleteGlad your snow finally washed away! Unforgiven is a rough watch, but so good. I hope you find some sunshine for Tony!
I've made him biscuits, too - hopefully those or William's lap cuddling will do the trick.
DeleteUnforgiven was a tough watch! xxx
A Little Life is heartbreaking! My small sniffle started last Monday and developed into full blown respiratory virus! Never known a cough like it. My Mum's had it too so we had to cancel her 95th birthday celebs since nobody wanted our germs!Hope his lordship recovers quickly. Loved Unforgiven, as brutal as it was. Also loving Pottery Throwdown, such talented folk.xx
ReplyDeleteOh man, yes, it really is. I'm 200 pages in now and Jude's backstory is absolutely tragic, its beautifully written but I have to keep taking a break!
DeleteI'm sorry you've had that horrid virus, it was doing the roads in Walsall before Xmas. You'll have to have a proper get together for your Mum in the Spring. There's a lot of snivelling and sneezing coming from the kitchen . I've made him some biscuits to try and cheer him up and to apologise for infecting him with my sniffle!
Those bookends! So much talent! xxx
That was me!! Are you watching the Banjo Beale prog?
DeleteHello lovely friend it’s so nice to see you still enjoying Philip’s mums’ coat. I can tell you she would have been thrilled to bits knowing you are wearing it. Her granddaughters love it when I show them pics of you in it xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Lynn! Still loving that amazing coat - as do so many of my blogging friends. xxx
DeleteOOo I didn't know there was a new Coen brothers movie. I'll have to look into that! X
ReplyDeleteIt's not new, Jess, it's from 2018. xxxx
DeleteWow a flowering mother in laws tongue never seen that before. I love Three Men in a Boat it has stood the test of time. I too would hate a skiing holiday I hate snow. My husband used to go skiing every year in his younger days and I would go to to Corfu, maybe we were sisters in another life! I love you in the Dollyrockers dress. Isn't William a handsome boy? Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteHello, Sue! I'm fascinated by that flowering Mother-In-Law's Tongue, I've never seen the like!
DeleteI'm so over the snow, I really hope we've seen the back of it. I don't know what we'd have done if Tony had said he wanted to go somewhere snowy for his birthday - probably give him a Jet2 gift voucher and wish him luck! xxx
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a cozy winter. Reading, watching movies, and trudging through the snow.
That purple dress looks so pretty on you.
xoxo
Thanks, Andrea! It sounds idylic but I'm glad to see the back of that black ice! xxx
DeleteAll are gorgeous, but especially love the faux fur black and white coat! You look stunning as always.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! That coat seems to look even better in the snow! xxx
DeleteHi Vix, I am with you on the matter of snow, fine for a day or so but no more. Luckily we did not get too much here. I love the Phool dress and jacket, I remember them fondly from my youth. Sadly I don't seem to find any here in my charity shops. I rather like the Jerome K Jerome clock too and have been a fan of his gentle humour since a girl. I also recommend ' Three Men on the Bummel' and ' Idle thoughts of an Idle fellow'. I am meeting a chum for lunch today and charity shop browsing. Her other friends she tells me are too ' smart' to do that. More bargains for us then!
ReplyDeleteHello Alysia, its so unusual for us to get more snow than you, I hope that's our lot for the year now!
DeleteThose Phool dresses sell for crazy prices these days. I remember them being insanely cheap back in the day but i suppose, as they were so fraguile, so few have remained.
Thanks for those book recommendations, I shall see if I can track copies down. We did have a Jerome K Jerome museum in the town at one point but the council couldn't afford the upkeep so we've just got the clock and a bronze bust in the park now!
I hope you found a few treasures with your friend. Mind you, even if you came home empty-handed it's lovely just to spend time with a like-minded soul! xxx
Sorry, there was a problem with my first comment. Oops!
ReplyDeletexxx
DeleteOOOH Vix you look so glam in the snow - shame it goes all grey/brown and slushy - while it lasts, the light is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteRe your plant - could it may be down to being a bit pot-bound? The same thing seems to happen with peace lillies (ours are drama queens and also prone to swooning lest you move them from a favourite spot lol).
I love your clothes with a story - it's so nice when they come with one - your coat is delicious.
Hope Jon is recovered from his lurgy - Mum has had the stomach bug doing the rounds. At 92 she qualified for a home-visit and had an absolutely charming GP check her over and even make her a cup of tea, bless. Fighting fit a week later - her generation are made of tougher stuff for sure, bless!
Elaine Anon
Thanks, Elaine! Urgh! I hate to see rthe snow when it's all churned up and dirty, it gives me the heebie-jeebies! I did have a look online, some websites said it can be due to the plant being pot bound and others that it was the sign of a happy plant. We'll wait and see, if I don't post again, it's gone all Day of the Triffids!
DeleteHow lovely that your Mum got a home visit, at 92 its the least she deserves. Jon's up and functioning again, a couple of days of cat snuggles, lying on the settee and trashy TV have sorted him out a treat! xxx
As previous commenters, I totally agree with you about snow, it's nice to watch it from home for a day, but it's a pain when you have to carry on with your normal life!. Not funny to walk on icy snow, even if you wear such fabulous boots!.
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely whatever the weather and I'm in love with your outfits, that Cruella coat and afghan dress, the gorgeous Phool midi dress and that last dress with matchy purple accessories, you rock it!
Hope Jon gets well soon!, sending hugs for both you and the furry boys!
besos
Absolutely! The snow is lovely for a day but the novelty soon wears off, Monica! Thanks so much for the comment! xxx
DeleteI LOVE your 'From Russia With Love' video ... you were very brave to accept the mission. None of my Mother in Laws Tongues has ever flowered. Perhaps I sell them off too early and never give them chance!
