Nailed It!

Hello! I signed off my last post telling you that Jon had caught my cold. Fortunately it was as short-lived as mine was and he's firing on all cylinders once again.

This was Tuesday's outfit. Another of my Dollyrockers dresses (and another gift from my fabulous friends, Lynn and Philip!) which has been in my possession since 2019. Liz bought me this gorgeous brass necklace for Xmas and the Accessorize hat was £2 from the Sue Ryder charity shop back in 2021. The boots, original 1960s Biba, were my Mum's.

I was very excited to get my nails done after my original appointment was postponed due to the snow.

Apparently like with clothes, there are nail trends, too but me being me, I don't follow the herd , prefering to forge my own path (which pleases my technician Charlotte no end!) My vision was evergreen leaves on a frosty Winter morning, choosing a combination of greens and silvery greys and I absolutely love the result.

With Jon under the weather I went swimming on my own on Wednesday lunchtime. This vintage maxi skirt, along with the matching off-the-shoulder cropped top, was the grand total of £3.50 from Vinted before Xmas. Rather than wait for the Summer, I decided to give the skirt a solo outing, teaming it with my All About Audrey marmalade velvet wrap top. Although they're massive, it's quite easy to squeeze the sleeves into a coat.

Wednesday is rum night in this house, which we downed whilst watching time-travelling British horror film, Last Night in Soho. An thrilling watch with some fabulous 1960s fashion and music along with cameos from Sixties legends Rita Tushingham, Diana Rigg and Terence Stamp. Currently on catch-up on Channel 4.

After bamboozling ourselves with travel options for Tony's 60th birthday, on Thursday morning we finally booked our trip. Although he'd mentioned sunshine, he's always sending me photos of our time in Athens so I decided to swap sunshine for ancient history...as he reads my blog I can't reveal the location and spoil the surprise!

Thursday was wet and miserable but I cheered myself up by wearing this incredible 1970s suede skirt I'd found on Vinted for £5...can you believe it had been listed for over a year?  Underneath I wore the £2 Mango sweater dress I'd bought on our charity shopping expedition last week and my beloved exotic snakeskin Gohill's boots, a gift from my former junior school teacher and all round inspirational friend, Eileen (blog post HERE).

We started watching the new series of The Night Manager on the BBC iplayer. It had been 10 years since the first series (and even longer since I'd read the book) and I thought I might need to do a catch up but it all came back to me...and we watched two episodes back to back.

Jon joined me for swimming this morning although he didn't quite manage his usual amount (I do a mile, he does a kilometre).

Liz bought me this Rusty Dusty Indian-made maxi dress for Xmas and as it was a mild morning I thought I'd give it an outing...I could have gone down the hippy chic route but decided I needed to be a cowgirl.

After a Spoons breakfast we had a wander around the chazzas. Pickings had been slim on Monday as, due to the snow, nobody had been able to get into town to drop off donations but we made up for it today.

This is a keeper, I think. It's by Jaase, an Australian Bohemian-chic brand. It's one of those easy to wear, 100% viscose dresses, ethically made in India with pockets and a drawstring waist. Their maxi dresses retail for around £75 so it was a snip at £2.99!

I love this quote! The label belongs to this pile of deadstock (ie., unworn with the original store tags attached) trippy crop tops - and a mini dress - from Topshop concession, Hype. The dress features a stained glass print with Jesus on the back, the others have Rococo designs, pandas, flamingos, chains and digitised leaves. These will be perfect for our festival shop.

Snazzy 1980s Slazenger golfing trousers, always a festival winner!

Some Gothic Lolita girl will look amazing in this Morphyne lace mini dress.

Dereta....classy! This gorgeous 1960s British-made, black cotton velvet maxi skirt is fully lined with a glamorous side split. It shows how much sizes have changed over the decades, this is labelled as a Size 16 and the waist measures 28" (that's a contemporary UK size 10 in some shops!)

Despite it being a whopping 735 pages long, I've nearly finished This Little Life. It is a hell of a book, a devastating read but with some utterly beautiful moments...for me it's up there with Birdsong and In Memoriam....I've not cried yet but I think it's imminent! This hardback book, Star of the Morning by Kirsten Ellis, snaffled for £1 will be my next read...

The extraordinary story of Lady Hester Stanhope, a wilful young beauty who played society hostess for her uncle, the Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger. After his death she set sail with her lover for the Mediterranean and Constantinople. But it was the Middle East where she found her destiny, the first Western woman to cross the Syrian desert and hailed by the Bedouin as their Star of the Morning. From her fortress in Lebanon where she established her own fiefdom, she exercised her canny influence over the region's devious politics.

Lord Byron met her in Greece and complained she had “a great disregard of received notion in her conversation as well as conduct” - pretty rich coming from Byron!

As with so many other powerful and intelligent women, Lady Hester was erased from history to fit in with the 19th Century male narrative of women being the weaker sex (and therefore not deserving of being given the vote).

Thanks for reading and have a fabulous weekend!

  1. The little black dress looks similar to one my daughter wore as a bridesmaid ( picked their own black dress) for her cousins wedding. It was cute, and purchased second loved. She later donated it back and am thinking it's been worn by at least another since 2020. I'm glad both your and Jon's colds were short. Hard to live a glam life with a wad of tissues handy.

  3. Hello Vix, I noticed your hair is getting lighter, it's very pretty. I have my nails done with biab and they have got so much stronger and healthier, I like the colours you chose for yours. I do love the Audrey velvet wrap tops and have dithered for ages over having one. I worried about the sleeves being bulky so it's good to know yours don't cause a problem under a coat. We're giving Night Manager another go, I had trouble getting into it (I think it's because I didn't like the actor playing the main character and I have no idea why!! I think it's his hair is that weird? yes probably!). Im having a clear out to sell on Vinted, it's time for a wardrobe update! Betty x

    1. Betty, I laughed out loud when I read your comment on Tom Hiddleston, it's almost word for word what I'd said to Jon...I don't get the appeal and his hair gives me the shivers, I call it posh bloke hair!
I'm glad you're loving how strong your nails are getting with the regular manicures, mine have to be filed down now, they never break any more.
It's an adventure seeing my hair get lighter although the roots are pretty dreadful lately, it's been 6 weeks since I did my roots!
Treat yourself to one of those tops, you won't regret it! Xxx

  4. Diana Ruth was the Chancellor of Stirling University (she lived nearby at the time) when my son went there and at his graduation ceremony she gave quite a rousing speech, ending with 'take every opportunity that comes your way'!I've never forgotten her RIP. Good weekend to you and Happy Birthday to Big Tone! Xx

    1. That's a claim to fame, she was a fantastic woman by all accounts. I was surprised to discover she was Guy Garvey from Elbow's mother in law.
Thank you! It's a couple of weeks till his birthday but at least we've got his present sorted! Xxx

  5. The little black lace dress, I thought it was a baby doll nightie top. Sure there isn't frilly knickers to go with it?

    1. It's made by an alternative brand who make gothic clothing, it's not a nightie. The emo kids wear this kind of thing with denim cut offs, stripy tights and military boots. X

I have a few Jaase dresses too.

I'm going to visit your old teacher's blog also. X

  7. Awh look at you in your Dolly Rocker. We knew it was you as soon as we saw it in the lovely vintage shop in Cartmel. Your nail colour mix is great. Mum has hers done and comes home with some interesting combos and my hairdresser friend has gorgeous mixes. I don’t know how they stay so nice when they are constantly in water. Love to you both from us two xx

Great to see that film from the 60's, too. So wonderful to see what you are reading too. Thank you for the brilliant post! & thank you for your comments too. All the best to January. It's bitter cold at the moment here in the heartland.

    1. Thanks, Louise! It was a very shortlived cold, thank goodness, 48 hours and it was gone, thank goodness.
I can't wait to start reading about Lady Hester, so many incredible women were erased from history because they didn't suit the narrative of the day...grrrr! xxx

  10. Hi Vix, some great outfits today. You certainly know your own style. I just love a 1970s suede skirt and yours is a beauty- what a gorgeous colour too. As others have said that Dollyrockers dress is perfect on you and beautifully accessorised as ever. I don’t know the Jaase label but it is certainly one to keep an eye on. I am still having a big clear out of my wardrobes and today donated another 3 big bagfuls to various charity shops. I am hoping I will be rewarded with a nice find shortly. 😉

    1. Thanks so much, Alysia! I was excited to find a longer length suede skirt, they're usually so short bending down requires all manner of gymnastics to avoid revealing more than you want to!
Jaase make some lovely dresses and pop up on Vinted at great prices, they're mostly rayon or viscose so perfect when you're going on holiday.
I hope your generous charity shop donations result in chazza karma! xxx

  11. So many women wiped from history for being too clever, adventurous or simply ahead of their time. I've never watched The Night Manager, I feel I may be missing something ... well apart from Tom's hair. ;-)

    1. It's shocking, isn't it? Mind you, its the same with people of colour, the knuckledraggers don't/won't believe that Britain has been multiracial since antiquity!
If you can get over the horror of Tom's hair, The Night Manager is a splendid watch! xxx

  12. History as written is forever disappointing. Classroom textbooks are even more so.
My husband has seen the first season of Night Manager. It is on my list but I still haven't gotten around to it. Hopefully soon now that a season 2 is out. I love all your outfits.

  14. Golly, ten years since the first Night Manager? It barely feels possible. I've been enjoying that too. Some of the Colombian jungle scenes were actually filmed on Tenerife, though Medellin and the historic hotel were location shoots.

I look forward to seeing where Tony's birthday travels take you all.

    1. I know! I thought it was about five years. I didn't know that part was filmed in Tenerife, we recently watched Frauds on itv, supposedly set in Southern Spain, and kept shouting "that's Tenerife!", the architecture, misty mountains and Dragon Trees gave it away!

  15. Byron is a fine one to talk! I adore his poetry, but he was in some ways a troubled man. I think he described himself once as half an angel, half a demon. Byron was certainly in possession of a great disregard of received notion in her conversation as well as conduct. Lady Hester's life story sound fascinating. I must read on her when I have the time.
