On Wednesday, with the previous evening's heavy rain and the subsequent frost, it was lethal underfoot on our 7am walk down to the swimming pool. Thankfully we made it in one piece and were rewarded to having the pool virtually to ourselves.
I wore this vintage Kate Beaver maxi dress, bought for 99p from a Shropshire charity shop 12 years ago, a rare piece which would have been hand-printed on the designer's Dorset kitchen table back in the early 1970s. I bought my Anokhi riding jacket from their flagship store in Jaipur back in 2019.
The town centre was very quiet and those brave enough to face the black ice were few and far between. I was thrilled when Jon spotted these two huge hardback compilations of my beloved Tales of the City stories at just 50p each.
On closer inspection I discovered that they are American first editions, listed on Abebooks for £54 each...not that they're going anywhere, I love Armistead Maupin. There's a fantastic Arena documentary about him on the i-player HERE, he's such an inspiring man.
On the way back from town I picked up my latest Vinted purchase from the parcel shop and it turned out to be even more beautiful than the photos in the lisiting. The seller had mentioned that it had a couple of loose stitches so I got my sewing machine out and cracked on with the repair. Whilst I was at it I replaced a couple of zips belonging to dresses I'd owned for years, one of those jobs that I put off for ages yet take hardly any time to do.
Despite not being a fan of David Tennant we binge-watched The Hack and I must admit he played Nick Davies, the Guardian journalist who uncovered the backing scandal, absolutely brilliantly.
On Thursday, with Storm Goretti due to batter the West Midlands later in the day, Jon suggested we pop over to one of our regular charity shopping haunts on the outskirts of Brum. Murky, grey and cold as I'd replaced the zip the day before I decided to wear this vintage lame cocktail dress by American designer, Victor Costa. My stylish blogging friend Sheila also owns this pendant. Mine has a matching cuff, which I'm not wearing, and was a gift to my mum from an ex boyfriend who went travelling in Canada in 1966.
Here's what I bought for me (as opposed to the stockroom)...
New Look recycled metal bangles, originally £6.99, chazza shop price £1.
My usual daytime bag is fabric and therefore not very practical in the rain and snow. At £2, this TopShop oversized quilted bag with a pleasingly chunky chain handle should be a good alternative.
Also Topshop, this green velvet boob tube with subtle sparkles was also £2 and will go straight into my festival suitcase ready for the summer.
Topshop, again! I bought the gold version of these 1960s-inspired space boots back in 2016. These were £5.
I've been after a burgundy polo neck for ages with no success. This Mango sweater dress is perfect and being a dress means it'll stay tucked in my skirt or, if I wear it under a cotton dress, eliminates the need for a slip. Another £2 buy.
The threatened snow arrived bang on time and continued throughout the night. We started watching Lucy Worsley's Victorian Murder Club on the iPlayer.
When I got up at 6am this morning the snow was pretty deep. Too early for a social media update on whether the pool was open, I made tea and went back to bed, starting my third book of the year, Beck.
I read Mal Peet's Tamar many years ago and loved it. Beck was the outcome of a brief encounter between his mother and an African solider on the streets of Liverpool in the early 1900s. Orphaned and shipped to Canada and the sadistic Catholic Brothers, through the days of the Depression, he makes his way westwards, a journey that proves harsh and loveless with only fleeting moments of real comfort.
I couldn't resist running outside and posing in the snow, its inconvenient but it does make for a pretty backdrop. The avenue has remained pretty much impassible all day with a car abandoned in the middle of the road. I'm wearing a vintage Afghan dress and this incredible Uzbek velvet suzani-work kaftan reworked into a coat (not by me). Yet again my feet are clad in the charity shop boots I bought last week.
I was supposed to have my nails done but - understandably, the salon was closed so I spent the rest of the day reading Beck with William slumped across my lap.
With icy conditions forecast for the weekend and the pool closed for a sports event I can see this being my position for the next couple of days.
Thanks for reading, see you soon!

William has chosen the best spot in the house for his nap.
ReplyDeleteThat pink/red dress with the gold pattern is great, it makes winter more glamorous.
Ice ice baby
Too cold, too cold...
Have a nice weekend!
He certainly has. Having him pinning me down is a great excuse not to do anything for an hour or two!
DeleteThe dullest day call for a bit of sparkle, its a shame to save the glittery stuff for Xmas! xxx
That pink maxi dress is stunning. Exactly what’s needed in this grey meh! The Topshop bag is gorgeous it’s very Chanel-esque. Stay warm, our snow is just about disappearing ooop North xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, that dress is the perfect antidote to a grim day!
DeleteI wondered if that bag was inspired by a designer one. It's lovely and big! xxx
We've had the light snow, warm, melt, freeze cycle and walking the dog ( trying to anyway) was lethal so we just romper in circles in the park thanks to my good snow boots, and ball play in the back yard. I think I remember that necklace from Sheila but she has an awful lot of gorgeous things. What a find and for you to have as well. Stay safe...and I too will be reading this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a very wise plan when there's so much frost about. My neighbour slipped on the ice last year and ended up with a broken shoulder which put her out of action for most of 2025.
DeleteI grew up with that necklace, it was crazy when Sheila found its twin! xxx
More lovely dresses!
ReplyDeleteI think my e mails are going into Spam so please check your Junk folder. Also I would appreciate any tips for hand washing a wool pleated skirt please! JanF
Hello Jan! I've checked my spam folder and can't see anything from you. Lukewarm water, baby shampoo or liquid handwash, wring by rolling it in a bath towel and dry it flat (I use a clothes horse laid flat over the bath) Hope this helps! xxx
DeleteI'd like a cat to sit on my lap please!!! Your new dress looks intriguingly nice! I look forward to its inaugural outing!
ReplyDeleteYour new boots are jolly! I'd like some metallic boots but unless they are a chazzer special, I'm going to have to keep waiting!
Oooh, I started watching the Hairdressing murder mystery you talked about. Not finished it yet but it was intriguing!!
You can't beat a cat on a lap. William's so warm, too - it's like having a hot water bottle, although he's liable to get cross and rag your arm for no reason at all!
DeleteI loved those gold TopShop boots, I wore them until they were no longer repairable. I was excited to spot the silver ones, they do add a bit of subtle glam to an outfit.
We really enjoyed Medusa Deluxe, it was weird but good. There's so much good stuff on the iplayer, can't understand anyone complaining that there's nothing to watch on the BBC! xxx
Beautiful looks all! I adore your gorgeous colorful coat and black boots in the last one, and your new black sac's a winner for sure. And, too...it is a pleasure to watch your videos uninterrupted on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!! I was pleased to find that bag, I'm not usually drawn to black but its pleasingly oversized and the chain elevates it into something a bit more interesting!
DeleteI'm glad you're happy about the YouTube videos, there's a few glitches with the downloads but I think I'm almost there! xxx
We've been snowed in all day too. I put on one of my Burbo's and tried to figure out how Tiktok works, while listening to Bowie day on BBC Radio 6.
ReplyDeleteI know it's pretty, but this weather really doesn't suit me, so dressing up is definitely required. Love your Afghan dress and coat. Perfect! Xxx
Hi Annie! I can't believe its been 10 years since Bowie died. We were in a hotel in Mumbai when Tony messaged Jon with the news. I heard some of the 6Music coverage, too. His tour manager was on BBC Breakfast, what a lovely guy he was.
DeleteIt does take a bit of effort to dress for this weather. Roll on the Spring! xxx
Lovely to see you rocking whatever the weather. Love that orange maxi dress and love that you wore a shiny dress for charity shopping, looking so Fabulous!. That's a great find!.
ReplyDeleteGlad that you found those books (I have to read them!) and thanks for the comments on series and documentaries (I'm a huge fan of Lucy Worsley, same for David Tennant, ;DD)
Looking particularly gorgeous in that embroidered coat and your fantastic afghan dress, what a fabulous ensemble!. Your furry companion looks really lovely too!
besos
Thanks, Monica! It was so dull yesterday and that dress was crying out to be worn. It made me feel better wearing gold lame!
DeleteIts definitely the weather for reading and for watching quality TV. The Lucy Worsley series is really interesting, a case I'd never herad of before. I was very impressed with David Tennant in The Hack!
William matched today's outfit! xxx
Hi Vix, it's not easy being stylish and warm in these freezing temperatures but you manage it very well. Your Afghan dress and Uzbek suzani- work work coat are a great pairing. I do love a stand out coat particularly in cold weather. Colour at this time of year is such a welcome sight. Well done on all your new finds. I'm having a bit of a dry patch at the moment and not finding anything good at the charity shops but instead am donating a load of my things as my wardrobes are full to bursting. Perhaps I will be rewarded. Lovely to see another Marion Donaldson dress. I did not wear my black velvet one this Christmas but there's still time to bring it out!
ReplyDeleteAh, reading with a cat on one's lap (I hope he did full "super-kitty" mode) has to be one of the greatest pleasures in life, eh, Vix? Sorry you've had a full dump of snow (yuck, hard pass) but you're looking fabulous! Love your ginormous had, that beautiful velvet coat, and amazing to wear something that you know was hand-done on a kitchen table!
ReplyDeleteI must give Armistead Maupin a shot - how amazing to find two first editions!
Happy weekend, my friend!
