Travelling Light - Packing for a Week in Greece in May With Hand Luggage Only

Have I mentioned that I'm off on our travels again? Despite the hiccup of being dropped off at the wrong hotel in the middle of the night last year, we've decided to risk another package holiday. Although we'd much rather travel independently, the price for a flight, coach transfer to the hotel (a two hour drive from the airport) and a week's accomodation in a small Greek owned business was an amazing £238 and seemed far too good to miss.

Being a package holiday, the cost also includes a generous luggage allowance of a 20kg check-in bag, 10kg of carry-on baggage plus a small personal item. That's over 60% of my bodyweight! To me, part of the fun of planning a trip is agonising over all the fabulous clothes I own and whittling them down to squeeze into my cabin bag which I can carry all on my own and stow into the overhead locker with ease. Doing away with check-in bags means we can check-in online, go straight through security and be enjoying a pre-flight beer in Wetherspoons whilst the rest of the passengers are still queuing at the baggage drop-off desk downstairs.

My trusty little wheelie cabin bag weighs in at a total of 6kg.

So what am I taking?

 1. A vintage embroidered velvet waistcoat
2. A fold-up panama hat
3.Love Binetti cotton kaftan
4. Vintage Greek tote bag
5. Naked Generation maxi dress
6.Anokhi maxi dress
7. Teva flatforms
8. Devotion Twins Greek cotton woven tunic
9. Kulu, Australia bikini
10. Vintage fringed leather bag
11.Gado Gado, Ibiza cowboy boots
12. Slazenger retro print swimsuit
13.Vintage wash denim jacket
14. All About Aud recycled sari silk wrap top
15. Haris Cotton woven co-ord

16. Vintage tooled leather belt
17. Selection of silver pendants
18. Tassel earrings
19. Rajasthani silver earrings
20. Silver rings
21. 2 x pairs of sunglasses
22. Fimo snake earrings
23. Sterling silver & turquoise stud earrings
24. Three Indian silver bangles, a vintage charm bracelet and 5 gemstone bracelets

Make-up: Eyeshadow, 2 x brushes, bronzer (found in a charity shop last week!), eyebrow pencil, eye liner, mascara, blusher, lipstick, pencil sharpener, tweezers, eyelash curlers, magnifying mirror.

Toiletries: Decanted once a day suncream, facial sun cream, Lush shampoo and conditioner bars, hair serum, moisturiser, tooth brush, toothpaste, interdentals, soap, make-up remover wipes (plastic-free obvs!), razor, bamboo cotton buds.

Hair stuff: Tangle Teezer, hair stick, hair bands, vintage hair slide.

Also taking (but not pictured): varifocals, Pestects bracelets, one pair of knickers and one pair of socks, my Kobo Ereader, phone, camera, travel towel, silk wrap and a shower cap.

I'm travelling in the Anokhi dress & velvet waistcoat (just peeking out) with a denim jacket, Gabo Gabo cowboy boots, the scarf I picked up in a charity shop last week, the Greek tote bag, knickers, socks and my tassel earrings (the rest of the jewellery goes on when I've passed through security).

How do I choose what to pack?

I check the weather apps daily, study average temperature charts and hunt down live webcams of the place we're visiting so I've got a good idea of what the weather's going to be like. Currently it's warm during the day but cools down after sunset so I've packed two dresses with sleeves, two strappy dresses I can layer up with a waistcoat or the sari wrap top and a co-ord, all of which can be worn with my denim jacket if needs be.

A seven night trip means a minimum of twelve outfits so by taking five dresses each will be worn at least twice. I could have got away with taking  four but couldn't resist the blue and white co-ord even if it might be a bit too Summery for May.

Last year, the holidaymakers we met at our hotel in Halkidiki couldn't believe how I could get all my belongings in a little carry-on. It turns out that most of the women I spoke to had a thing for shoes (several had packed a different pair for every night they were there!) Since I discovered Tevas they are the only footwear I pack, they're stylish, waterproof and so comfy to walk in it eliminates the need for trainers. I travel in my cowboy boots as it's not exactly sandal weather here in the UK and I'll probably wear them at night if it's chilly.

Before I make my final selection I try everything on. I'll often wear things around the house for an hour or two to ensure they're comfy and don't require any adjustments - trailing hems get taken up, slippy shoulder straps get shortened and anything that needs a underskirt or creases easily gets ousted. I prefer to plan my outfits in advance rather mindlessly chuck the things I like into my bag so, once it's made the grade, I'll lie each dress on the bed with the jewellery and bag I intend to wear with it. Oh yes, and when I'm trying my clothes on I never wear makeup or jewellery or do anything with my hair. If something makes me feel good when I'm looking like the Wreck of the Hesperus, with a tan, my jewellery and some shocking pink lipstick, it's going to make me feel like an absolute goddess.

And it might sound a bit geeky but I always photograph what I'm taking and create a Pinterest board for each trip. Hopefully one day I'll have photos of everything I own so I won't have to drag everything out of my wardrobe every time I go away, I can just look at photos!

I absolutely loved the soft muted tones of this Love Binetti cotton kaftan I snaffled from Vinted for £8 (it's by an Argentinian designer and originally retailed for around £800!)

Devotion Twins is an Athens-based designer label which champions traditionally woven Greek textiles. You'll find it in those high end chi-chi Greek boutiques that cater for the wealthy European jet set. I managed to find this Oxia shirt dress online, it had been reduced from £250 to £30. I've kept the label for posterity!

Haris Cotton is a high end Athenian clothing brand found in cities all over Greece and, like Devotion Twins, specialises in hand woven traditional textiles. You'll often find me in one of their boutiques fondling their textiles and wishing I was rich enough to afford one of their dresses. I spotted this co-ord on Vinted and as it had been listed for six months the seller kindly accepted my cheeky £20 offer.

Hopefully it'll be warm enough to wear it alone but it looks good with this tatty denim jacket Jon found for me.

A couple of old favourites. This Naked Generation dress was an eBay find a few years ago. You may remember me wearing it to visit Knossos (the tote bag I'm taking with me is a 1970s souvenir from there.) The chazza shopped denim jacket and recycled sari wrap top (bought from All About Audrey back in 2018) should keep the chill off after sunset.

I bought this beautiful block printed dress from the Chowpatti Beach branch of Anokhi when we last visited Mumbai in 2020, a reissue of a 1970s dress from their archives. It can be worn alone or with the velvet waistcoat, the All About Aud top or both.

I'm not off just yet, I'll be back in a couple of days to report back on a day of adventure in Birmingham!

  1. You're not going to believe this, but I favourited what was described as a Devotion Twins copy of your blue and white co-ord on Vinted. It was absolutely gorgeous and a steal, but I hesitated. Whenever I favourite something, it sells the next day!
As ever, you've got the dream holiday wardrobe and whilst I use Pinterest, it's a good idea, photographing your clothes.
Your packing post has reminded me to see what the dimensions are for the free basic baggage allowance we've opted for with Easy Jet. xxx

    1. It's so frustrating when something gets snapped up in the blink of an eye. I was amazed that my set had been on Vinted for months but had only just popped up in the recommended for you section a few weeks ago.
Pinterest is so useful for packing, I photograph all the potentials and whittle everything down over a week or so. I've zipped the bag up now and shall not be tempted to sneak anything else in - I shall save the rest of my blue & white clothes for Corfu! xxx

  4. How in Creation's Name can a kaftan cost £800 ? 🤯 😱

You however, are an absolute genius. I am taking"If something makes me feel good when I'm looking like the Wreck of the Hesperus, with a tan, my jewellery and some shocking pink lipstick, it's going to make me feel like an absolute goddess, printing it in a nice font and sticking it up on my wardrobe door. And if I ever get to go somewhere warm and sunny that involves a plane, please will you come and do my packing? xx 😘😘

    1. And how can someone who paid that much for it sell it for £8? It beggars belief, doesn't it?
If you ever go somewhere warm and sunny I'll happily do your packing, I'd happily do it for a job! xxx

  6. A perfectly curated holiday wardrobe, as usual 🙂 I particularly love the Haris co-ord, I hope it will be warm enough to wear it unadorned.
I don't get the mania for taking lots of shoes. I generally go in trainers and just pack a air of sandals. Shoes are bulky and heavy, and I bet half of them don't get worn.
We had lovely weather in Penzance, but it's so cold again now. Can't wait for Turkey.
Looking forward to your Brum blog. We must try to arrange a meet up when you get back from holiday xxx

I'm glad the weather in Penzance has been kind and so looking forward to a catch-up and hearing all about Turkey, it's going to be hot, hot, hot!
I don't get the shoe thing either, I appreciate a good pair of boots or clogs but I don't pay much attention to what's on someone's feet. xxx

    2. When we holiday in England by caravan for two weeks I take 28 pairs of briefs, one for each day and one for each evening out, though I never use them all. I take lots of shoes and a few hand/ shoulder bags.
I've been abroad but never by plane.
I don't know how I'd cope with minimum luggage let alone only hand luggage ! You have my admiration.
      Jean.

    3. I don't think I own that many pairs of knickers, Jean! I love having lots of choice at home but it's really freeing to go back to basics when I travel and it makes me appreciate what I own a lot more when I get home!
I've been known to travel to India for six weeks with just the clothes I stand up in and buy everything there ! xxx

At the moment there is a lot of tourism both in Athens and on the islands as it is the Easter holidays (May 5)..

  13. That Oxia shirt dress is a trophy-worthy score! Save the ticket? I'd frame it! * Your prioritizing space for a variety of accessories that don't require much space makes sense in terms of outfit options. I wore out a black maxi cotton that served as a beach cover-up with flip-flops, no jewelry and giant sunnies, then became my dining room kaftan when paired with black sandals and every piece of silver jewelry I'd packed. Why schlepp xx shoes?!

    1. Hi Beth! The first time I came across that Devotion Twins label I was speechless, the quality and their amazing colour combinations are just fabulous.
That black maxi sounded like a very wise choice, I love things that can be dressed up or down with a few accessories rather than having specific day/night wear. I find that sticking to a similar colour pallette if you're not sure about the weather really helpful, if the temperature plummets I can wear that Oxia shirt or the posh kaftan over the Anokhi maxi without looking totally mad. xxx

  14. What a brilliant masterclass in sorting out and packing for a holiday. I love travelling light it makes things so simple doesn't it. We are literally going away for a couple of days next week and will have a car packed to the gunnels, not my idea of fun ... a new smaller car and taking all three animals has something to do with it. Usually it's just us two and a backpack each.

    1. I hate the thought of not being able to carry my bag and having to rely on help. Birmingham Airport's under reconstruction at the moment, last time we went we had to climb about 60 steps (there was a huge queue for the lift) - I'd have needed muscles like Arnie to get up there with 30kg of baggage!
      Have a fantastic break.. xxx

  15. Great packing! I love your Naked Generation dress and Audrey tie front top (have been thinking I would like one for ages! as they are so versatile). Boots are nice, sandals look comfy - and you look fabulous in a bikini! We often go package holiday for exactly the same reason, the price is usually too good to argue with and you don't have to do what everyone else is doing once you get there - we use our hotel as a base, get out and explore, can even get a train somewhere and stay knowing you have a nice hotel room waiting if want to come back!) I am always amazed when talking to other hotel guests that often they have not explored other than to walk outside briefly, they have missed out on so much. We have found that if you can get hold of a local teenager in most places, they are your best guide - they aren't expecting too much, they know all the interesting things you want to see and they jealously guard us and keep the rest of the touts away! I hope you have a great time, the weather should be really good. Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! Those wrap tops are really useful, great for having in your bag when you're out and about, handy for a bit of modesty if you're visiting a church or a temple or to keep the sun off your shoulders.
We'd been looking at booking separate flights and accommodation for weeks and nothing came close to that price. Hopefully we can put the money we saved towards a boat to a neighbouring island. Aren't people weird, staying by a pool all day and eating at the same hotel the whole time they're there? They could be anywhere in the world and leave never having seen anything a country has to offer.
I like your tip about local teenagers, we've done that in Morocco. We always chat to bar and waiting staff and try and learn a bit of the language, even if it's only asking for a big beer, it always come in handy!
I've not checked the weather today, I'm keeping everything crossed! xxx

  16. Vix, the Pinterest idea is brilliant. I usually spend the weeks between booking and going on a trip musing about what to pack. I don't get serious about my travel wardrobe until about ten days out when I can both check the weather at our destination and stop wearing the clothes I plan to take long enough to launder and sequester them. However, your tip to try on everything, select the accessories, and take photographs is great, and I think I will do that before our next trip in July.

    1. Hello Tess! I play around with possibilities for a couple of weeks and, like you, start giving serious consideration to packing when it's a bit closer to departure. Creating a Pinterest board with photos of your clothes feels a bit like you're shopping for them again, you can appraise everything and play around with outfits without creating chaos in the bedroom! July will soon roll around! xxx

  21. Wow, I always enjoy a luggage post, but this one is particularly fantastic!, so methodical (which I love, as I'm a huge fan of lists and spreadsheets). Great idea to keep a register of your luggage, I do it too and then take some notes on what can be improved!. But your pinterest board is so much better, totally visual!
I've learned from the best, so also try my clothes on before packing them, and always consider some layering. Also a great idea to wear your bulkier and warmer items during travel, sometimes it's damn cold in the plane!.
Love those dresses you picked for your holiday, so fabulous!, and totally agree that jewellery is the better way to add fabulousness without taking up too much space!. I'm taking notes for my next luggage!.
Even if I have usually a weakness for shoes, I only pack one pair in my cabin luggage and think in comfort first (great tip!). But my weakness is that I pack a lot of undies and socks!
    Thank you for your tips!
    besos

    1. Hello Monica! I'm so glad you like my packing post, I really enjoyed seeing what you'd taken on your trip to Lanzarote.
I used to scribble my lists down in notebooks and keep a note of what I wore each day in a travel journal. Pinterest boards are so useful. As I mentioned to Ann, when I get back home I'll add photos of me wearing the clothes I packed when I was away which helps me remember how I felt wearing them!
It's so important to try things on, isn't it? Not realising that something's completely see thru' or creases up like a rag after ten minutes means you've wasted valuable bag space and having to sit and restitch a hem or reattach a button eats into precious holiday time.
My weakness is always jewellery! I've come back from charity shopping in town today with five bracelets and a pair of earrings which I've had to squeeze in (I've made up for it by getting rid of the basket I was going to take - three bags for a week? What was I thinking?!) xxx

I rely on dresses a lot when I'm packing too. 5 dresses can go a long way.
I love the collages you created.
