Behind Every Smile There's Teeth

Hailstorms, Baltic temperatures and galeforce wind aside, at least we're enjoying a little sporadic sunshine this week.

With the weekend mostly being spent paperhanging (I can't really call it wallpapering as its the ceiling we're tackling) I've been dressed in dungarees for most of the time. It was quite exciting to slip on my Naked Generation dress (eBay, 2020) and a vintage suede jacket to pop to B&Q for more DIY supplies on Monday morning. I did wear the vintage tan leather boots I'd bought from the charity shop on Friday but they pinch my big toes so off to the Kinky Shed they go.

This midi looks remarkably like a Naked Generation dress but its labelled Mono and was a fraction of the price (new with tags via Vinted). This - with my Anokhi riding jacket over the top - was this morning's choice for swimming, Spoons and a trip to the dentist. My second trip in a week.

The toothache I'd been plagued with at the beginning of last week turned out to be a gum infection but luckily the antibiotics worked their magic and I've been given a clean bill of dental health. I'm aware of how incredibly fortunate we are to have an NHS dentist, something a quarter of all British adults can't access. Most of our friends have no choice but to pay monthly subscriptions for private dentistry. The bill today cost just us over £80 - this included my emergency appointment (examination, X-Rays and prescription), both Jon & I's biannual check-up and two scale and polishes.

By the way, it appears I tempted fate when last week I mentioned how I'd not being bothered by the menopause, apparently the teeth and gums are extremely susceptible to any hormonal changes that can take place around the time of the menopause...gah!

As promised in my last post, here's our recently acquired charity shopped vinyl. (The emboldened acts are those we've seen live.)

The first four collages are the latest 7" purchases - Melanie, Sham 69, The Banned, The Mission, George McCrae, Holly & The Italians, Bow Wow Bow, The Regents, The Alarm, The Reverse Cowgirls, The Late Show, The Real Thing, Gary Numan, Japan, Nick Lowe, a compilation comprising The Jesus & Mary Chain, Redskins, Simply Red and The Style Council, Electribe 101 and Elvis Costello & The Attractions. There's some odd choices but when the assistant insists you take 5 for £1 you'll grab anything that isn't scratched to buggery.

Here's the albums: The Osmonds, Fat Boy Slim, Twenty Flight Rockers, Phoneys & The Freaks (featuring Bonehead from Oasis), a 1976 compilation featuring acts that include Candi Staton, Gordon Lightfoot, Fleetwood Mac and Todd Rundgren and Twiggy (still sealed in the original cellophane).

How many of these artists have you seen live?

My beautiful friend Betty took this book with her to Morocco recently (read her blog HERE) and kindly sent it my way when she'd finished it. It tells the story of the year the author, Tahir Shah and his family spent in Casablanca and is a fascinating tale of the Morrocan mafia, dodgy workmen, superstition and jinns (evil spirits).

We've been to Morocco a couple of times. The engraved metal Hand of Fatima which still hangs on our bathroom wall was a gift from a shopkeeper we got chatting to in the Petit Socco in Tangier when we first visited in 1992.

Here I am on my first trip as a fresh-faced 25-year-old. With my serial killer fringe, Levi's ribbed tee shirt, a Wonderbra and my Adidas Gazelles I couldn't be more 1990s!

We stayed at The Hotel Continental in the heart of the souk in Tangier where, two years previously, John Malkovich had stayed and filmed The Sheltering Sky, Bernardo Bertolucci's magnificent film based on the Paul Bowles novel. Abdul, the fez wearing head waiter, had worked there since the Second World War, during breakfast he'd wind up the gramophone and play big band tunes. We visited the Bond baddie's Tangier villa in The Living Daylights, dodged a legion of touts who'd line up outside the hotel each morning and attach themselves firmly to our sides as we walked around le petit socco pointing out the obvious and demanding cash for the privilege.

We sat in cafes bedecked with graffiti supposedly daubed by The Rolling Stones, paid homage to the Marrakesh rooftop where Talitha Getty posed for that photo, marveled at Yves St Laurent's beautiful blue garden, trekked the Riff Valley, swam in icy cold mountain streams, crossed the country on the overnight Marrakesh Express train where we shared a couchette with the locals and accidentally ended up in an illegal strip joint in downtown Marrakesh with the chief of police (as you do!)

Obviously back in 1992, cameras were analogue and all the pictures we took are stashed away in an album in one of our sheds. I made this little slideshow of our thirty-two year old adventure for my blog a few years ago. Jon's got hair and everything!

I can't talk about books without mentioning my most recent read, The Heavenly Table by Donald Ray Pollock. Set in 1917, the book tells the tale of three dirt poor brothers who, after the death of their deranged father and inspired by a cheap dimestore novel, decide to become outlaws, murdering and pillaging their way across the American Midwest. It's darkly comic, Tarantino-esque in its violence and reminds me of one of my favourite films, O Brother, Where Art Thou? It goes straight to the top of Vix's Best Reads of 2024 followed very closely by Matthew Kneale's English Passengers, a biting satire on the evils of Colonialism.

I had to do a double take as I was writing today's blog post, I looked out of the window and spotted one of our handsome urban foxes sunning himself on the lawn. Despite them having dug up my stumpery to make themselves a den I still have a soft spot for Reynard the Fox (although not enough to cough up £8000 for this rare 1701 publication!)

Up until a few months ago, most evenings Mr Fox would wait on the doorstep for William and they'd trot off up the garden together. Being a street cat no longer, William prefers human company. He can't even be bothered chasing Kitty from next door any more, even when she sits on the windowsill snarling at him.

Due to the antibiotics, I've not touched a drop of alcohol for over a week. I'm almost giddy with excitement at the thought of having a glass of Rioja with my tea tonight! Cheers!

  2. I enjoyed your slide show of Morocco, Vix.. there's so much to see. I think we will return. How lovely your Vinted dress is and, yes, very similar to naked Generations current stock. Glad you liked the book. Thanks for the mention. I have absolutely nothing to blog about lately as been signed off sick by gp for anxiety, but am enjoying reading other blogs. I am so looking forward to seeing your middle room.makeover.. am currently watching 6 episodes of Dream Home makeovers With Sophie Robinson on channel 5 catch up. she does wonderful things with colour. How strange that William likes hanging with foxes! Betty x

    1. Hello Betty! I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis, you poor thing. I hope you start to feel better soon.
We'll definitely go back to Morocco at some point, I was amazed at the prices of the accommodation we found, too. We spent a week in Agadir a few years later, it wasn't quite as exotic but there were some great veggie-friendly places to eat, nice beaches and we bumped into Ian Botham!
You're right, that dress is remarkably similar to Naked Generation, it's a shame all my research into the label came to a dead end and the company are no longer trading.
I've not heard of Dream Home but I love an interiors programme (obsessed with Interior Design Masters on the BBC) so I shall investigate further. Are you excited about tonight's Race Across The World. I wish you'd made it on to the show!

  3. Hope you enjoyed your red wine, Vix!

The menopause is now a big 'thing' it seems. I do wish I had taken HRT but at the time it was linked to breast cancer (erroneously, it seems now) and there was a lot of that in our family, so I didn't. Glad your dentistry went well; that seems incredibly cheap even for the NHS. My dentist, also NHS, charges us 60.00 for a scale and polish and you have to pay a 20.00 deposit in advance!

Morocco looked amazing and I am reeling at Jon with hair...

Very interested in the book you praised so highly; I must look for a copy. The cover shows a quote from Philip Meyer. He wrote a wonderful book called 'The Son' which was a really good read, too.

I absolutely love the art work on the covers of the 45s you found. I'm astonished that Twiggy made a record. Who knew? And it was my era!

Let's hope it begins to warm up again; I'm sick of cleaning out the fire everyday.

    1. Hello Vronni! I think that glass of wine was the finest I've ever tasted. I thought that a week off the booze might make me completely sozzled after my first sip but i was fine!
I'm very cynical about all these menopause related products flooding the marketplace and find it rather worrying that almost any ailment that women over 40 go to the doctor with seems to be menopause related.
      According the NHS website:
Band One: A check-up which covers an examination, diagnosis and advice and, if necessary X-rays and a scale and polish and costs £26.80.
It sounds like your dentist is charging for Band 2 (£73.50) which covers fillings, root canals and extractions! Mind you, you wouldn't want to argue and end up chucked off their books, would you?
I shall investigate Phillip Meyer's "The Son" thank you!
I knew Twiggy became a singer after she quit modelling but can't remember what her voice sounded like, I shall have to investigate YouTube, I daren't take the wrapping off her album!
We've got frost forecast for tomorrow morning! We've had to bring the tortoise back inside! xxx

    2. I wonder if the price difference is because the hygienist does the clean and polish and not the dentist? Our dentist stopped doing them ages ago. I have an appointment at the end of the month so I'll check with them...

Glad to hear your teeth problem has been sorted. I often suffer from inflamed gums, but had no idea teeth and gums were susceptible to hormonal changes.
We haven't found any decent vinyl in the charity shops for absolutely ages, but that's quite a haul you got there. I'm impressed by the number of bands you've seen live. I think I've only seen The Jesus & Mary Chain and - wait for it - Bow Wow Wow out of these.

I was perplexed as to my gum infection, other than the odd lost filling, my teeth are quite well behaved. Let's hope we both grow out of this hormonal change quickly. Is this an opportunity for someone to invent menopausal dental products? Maybe I need to apply to the Dragon's Den?
Jesus and Mary Chain put on a fantastic show. Loved Bow Wow Wow, Annabella Lwin had such incredible style! xxx

  6. There is a band called The Reverse Cowgirls !!!!!!! OMG that is hilarious, I need to get a tour t-shirt. That would make my kids die of embarrassment.
Although I didn't know that meno and teeth and gums health are linked, it doesn't surprise me. Isn't there an old wives tale about losing a tooth for every baby you have? I do agree with Vronni though, it has seemed to become a bit of a "thing". Glad its all behind me and I can wear my "Old Crone" t-shirt proudly.
Thanks for the Morocco slideshow, what an adventure!!! Megan.

  9. Hey Vix, Having teeth issues is the worst, and my story fits nicely into your story about live music. I had a gig booked with friends on a Friday night, I had to go to the dentist in the morning and he found a major issue with one of my back teeth and it had to come out. So he numbed my mouth and started digging that thing out, he ended up sawing it in half and yanked it out in two pieces, packed the hole, gave me some painkillers and packed me home. I texted my friends and said yes I feel fine I can definitely come, but then the numbing agent wore off and that was it, half my face was throbbing and swollen and I couldn't make the show, let alone throw back a few drinks. The band has not yet been back to Australia - so that's my tooth story. Anyway, glad to see you feeling better.

    1. Oh no, Diane, you poor thing! Both the extraction and the subsequent pain must have been hideous and to have to go home and miss the gig must have been so disappointing. I hope the band come back one day! xxx

I was so pleased with that dress. There's some lovely Dilli Grey ones starting to pop up on Vinted, some of the prices are really good, too.
That must have been miserable with that tooth infection over Xmas back in 2018. I was so worried that I;d be chucked off my dentist's books after lockdown. When I got a message asking to book in for a check-up I was dancing around the kitchen in delight. xxx

We've got boxes of albums in the shed but there's been an avalanche in there and I'd be risking life and limb to ferret anything out from under the debris.
Fleetwood Mac! I bet loads of people would have given their eye teeth to see them. Now don't diss Crazy Horses, that was a seriously good tune (not so sure about Puppy Love, though!)

Our lovely dentist who we've been seeing for almost 25 years is only doing one day a week at the surgery now as he's gone back to being a dental surgeon at the hospital. I was dreading the practice becoming private but fortunately it's still NHS. It's got so bad around here that a Sikh charity are funding a dental bus which goes around the area offering free dental treatment to those in need. 15. One might consider your blog entry as a sort of PSA: dental health care is *essential* to one's overall well being. On a side note, my vet says dental care is a key factor in domestic cats' survival into their 20s: It's a case of dental infections directly affecting the heart. She offered me a toothbrush for cats which I did not accept. (If you obtain one for Willam, please post pix of your using it.) My cats do nibble on "dental treat desserts" , the kitty equivalent of brushing after meals.

  18. Hi Vix, loving your blog!! Back from 3 and half months in India 🇮🇳 and cannot believe how cold it is here. Got back on the Utopia and couldn’t believe how damp everything was, we’d made sure we’d winterised but weren’t enough. Love your slide show of pics with you in Merakesh many moons ago, so young and so suits you with blonde hair.
Got a scale and polish for 1000 rupees, which is about £10, my dentists charges are massively overpriced compared to India 🇮🇳 even though their NHS. I need a white filling here and they said no 1 filling, only mercury on NHS. About £250 to £300 here because it’s not near the front. It’s an outrage lol 😂
I need 2 gaps filled and am considering bridges, so much cheaper than the Uk. Also living on a boat and moving around, it’s hard to find a regular dentist.

    1. Welcome home, sweetheart! It's lovely to hear from you and I've loved following your adventures in Goa & Rajasthan on Facebook. It's so cold, what a time to come back! We used to spend a month in India in December and then go back for another month in April, coming back in May and usually missing the cold weather. It's such a shock to the system after months of heat, isn't it?
There's a very good, British-trained dentist in Agonda, a lot of people we knew used to go for implants. I know the prices were a fraction of the implant prices here. My NHS dentist has only ever done the white composite fillings (mercury-free) - it's a shame the practice isn't taking on any more patients. The dental situation here is absolutely awful, I think you'd be a lot better off having the work done with a reputable dentist abroad.
We were supposed to visit Sri Lanka many years ago but had to cancel our trip due to a terrorist attack and have never been back. We nearly went in 2019 but after researching for months we couldn't find any cheap accomodation and ended up back in India.

  24. Your outfit from the 1990s is very 1990s. Such a cute photo! I probably wouldn't have recognized you. I see you as dark haired and need to remind myself you are a natural blonde. Thank you for the reading recommendation. The Heavenly Table by Donald Ray Pollock sounds like a great read!

    1. I think being born blonde must have been an accident t birth, as soon as I dyed my hair dark brown I felt like I'd finally become me! The Heavenly Table is an incredible read especially as the writer only became an author a few years ago, he left school, without any qualifications and worked as a labourer for 32 years! xxx

  25. I love the maxi dress paired with suede dress. Your hair looks fabulous in curls.
Toothache is the worse! You reminded me to call my dentist.
