More Tales Of The City & Some Cowgirl Chic

The incessant rain didn't dampen our spirits when Nikki & I met up in Birmingham on Wednesday and we had a fabulous day wandering around the shops, being complimented by people who loved our style and putting the world to rights over pints of Birmingham-brewed Indian Summer ale and steaming plates of samosa chat in our favourite city centre hang-out, The Indian Brewery

With our long hair and mutual love of Indian textiles and vintage clothing, we're constantly asked if we're sisters, which I'm more than happy about.

On Wednesday Nikki wore a Dilli Grey blouse, East tapestry coat and a vintage Anokhi skirt and I wore an All About Audrey dress, vintage Kashmiri waistcoat, some handmade green leather cowboy boots (a Vinted find) and my Mum's 1970s Mongolian lamb coat.

We did more socialising on Thursday when our friends Brendan and Lynne popped over for dinner. It was high time we took a turn at hosting, Bren's cooked us several delicious meals over at theirs (another household where the menfolk do the cooking). William was on his best behaviour and adores the present they bought him, this catnip tiger.

We were too busy catching up to take any photos. Jon went for a Spanish theme with tapas starters (garlic, chilli & lime marinated mushrooms, slithers of Manchego cheese and pimento stuffed olives), Spanish chicken casserole with Mediterranean couscous (with a meat-free version for me) and Fuerteventura fudge petit fours (made by moi using gofio, olive oil and unrefined sugar).

William wasn't the only one with a gift, we were given this gorgeous houseplant in a fabulous pot and a pile of Montalbanos.

Whilst I can't be arsed with Easter, any week involving a public holiday is excellent for bargain hunting as most people seem to be elsewhere. Look at Thursday's splendid Lidl Waste Not box, a pineapple, a pomegranate, two mangos, six apples, six peppers, white cabbage, a cauliflower, two lettuce and an aubergine, all for £1.50! Bank Holidays are historically good for snaffling amazing stuff on eBay (and Vinted!) and for finding great deals on flights - expecting the majority of people to be sitting around the dinner table eating their roast lamb or doing family stuff, many airlines slash fares. As a child-free vegetarian orphan I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Any how, back to Nikki. When we're out we're often complimented on what some people call our Cowgirl Chic. A quick look online and I reckon that the way the women of the Wild West dressed - minus the rifle & the horse - is pretty close to our style. There's gorgeous Michelle Dockery in the kick-ass female-centric Western series, Godless, with waist length braids and block printed blouses.

There's the villainous Jennifer Jason Leigh in the Hateful Eight wearing a Cossack hat and a battered leather maxi coat, beautiful Emily Blunt in The English with leg o'mutton sleeves, a statement brooch and a velvet waistcoat.

And the goddess of all Cowgirl Chic, Jane Seymour in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, wearing what looks like my entire wardrobe (including that posh VB doctor's bag I scored last week!)

Cowgirl Chic requires lots of unkempt hair, partially pinned, braided or secured in place by a hat. Clothes-wise it's battered leather and well-worn suede, indigo denim, corduroy and faded cotton prints. Blouses are buttoned all the way up often accompanied by a waistcoat and with a brooch or a scarf tied at the neck. Belts are tooled leather, bags are big and boots are tan, leather or suede and usually dusty.

Thursday's outfit was a Dilli Grey needlecord maxi skirt worn with a vintage Anokhi blouse, a tooled leather belt, handmade in Ibiza (via Ebay) Gabo Gabo cowboy boots, a charity-shopped Rawhide coat, Monsoon fedora and my VB bag.

Friday's outfit was a Levi's shirt, vintage Anokhi maxi skirt, a tooled leather belt and an Egyptian Revival brooch.

Today's outfit was a charity-shopped linen blouse (originally Topshop with the price tags still attached), a vintage Forbidden Fruit cheesecloth maxi skirt, a tooled leather belt and a 1960s Indian silk screen printed scarf.

Yee-haw! We're off out on the town tonight celebrating Liz's birthday kicking off with a few drinks in 'Spoons and followed with an Indian feast.

See you very soon!

  2. Always a treat to read about what you're up to and what you're wearing. Cherry on top is William looking very chilled. Those one pound, fifty too good to go boxes are amazing. A single reduced cauliflower would be $2. here.

    1. Thanks, Rita! Those Waste Not boxes are incredible value for money. I love how everything is ready to eat, no leaving a bullet-like mango on the windowsill for a week in the hope that it'll eventually be edible. xxx

  3. Lovely outfits (no wonder you received compliments, both you look Gorgeous and so stylish) and lovely to see some inspiring pictures of that Cowgirl Chic style!.
I'm totally amazed by that Waste Not box, I think it's impossible to buy even a lettuce for 1,50 here, let alone a mango or pineapple which are damn expensive!.
Usually I made the most of Easter holiday, pottering around our flat, painting or fixing stuff (it's my own tradition!).

    1. Thanks so much, Monica! I love a bit of cowgirl chic, feminine but practical, nothing that requires shapewear, a hair brush or totteringly high heels is a bonus in my book!
Those Waste Not boxes are so good, cauliflowers alone here can be over £2. Jacob's eaten most of those lettuces already.
I like your Easter holiday tradition. I'm currently searching for flights and Jon's a step ahead, trying on his stash of shorts he's accumulated from charity shops over the last few months!
      Have a fab weekend! xxx

    1. You can be a cowgirl, too! You're welcome to join our posse. Jane Seymour never changes, always so beautiful and smiley.
I'm really pleased with the Audrey dress, I do love green especially at this time of year. xxx

  7. I read a book many moons ago called 'Even Cowgirls get the Blues'. I think it was quite naughty from what I vaguely remember! Is that Annie Oakley in the small painting? I loved 'The English'. Wonder if it's still on IPlayer? I worry for you wearing that beautiful brooch so near your throat! I think you have the best Lidl in the land! Totally unheard of up here to score such a bounty! What a lovely plant pot that is. Would go beautifully with my new Mexican tiles that I just put up (read 'threw'!)in my kitchen!Happy Easter Sunday to y'all!xxx

    1. I think that is Annie Oakley. I went down a rabbit hole looking at female-led Westerns and notable women from the Wild West after looking up Cowgirl Chic, I see a film night coming up after we've finished Tales of the City and binge watched This Town (already on the i-player, we're so excited!)
I need to see those Mexican tiles, well done for throwing them up yourself! xxx

  9. You both look amazing, no wonder you get so many compliments when you are out together. I had never really considered it before but yes, you do dress a bit Cowgirl Chic/Indian inspired ... which could be called the very best of cross-dressing. ;-)

  10. I had to smile, reading about cowgirl chic. A couple of days ago, I finally gave my new-to-me Frye cowboy ankle boots an outing and after hearing a few tracks from Beyonce's new western inspired album, I posted on my Instagram story my prediction that cowgirl chic will be all the rage this year. What a coincidence!
I too have one of those gorgeous little plant pots from Lidl (I've had to repot its original plant as it outgrew the pot).
Love your Egyptian revival brooch! xxx

    1. Funnily enough, I was watching BBC Breakfast one day last week and there was a feature on Beyonce's new Country album and I told Jon to expect a rash of those pink novelty cowboy hats and PVC "Shein" cowboy boots worn by groups of women on hen parties!
How are you getting on with your Fryes? Nikki and I both own second-hand pairs but find them so heavy for normal use - they look fab, it's very annoying!
Isn't that little pot fab? I love a vintage tile! xxx

    2. Not sure what Blogger is playing at, defaulting to leaving my comment anonymously. Oh well, I also have a pair of knee high Frye boots and I agree, they feel heavy. I barely wear them but can't bring myself to part with them. The ankle boots are perfect though! xxx

    3. I wasn't sure if that was you, Claire! Of course, you are in the Frye gang, I think we both acquired them around the same time. I shan't part with mine either, they're fine as a wellie alternative at festivals and NT visits but they're just too stompy for daily use. xxx

  11. Both you and Nikki were looking absolutely fabulous and I'm not surprised that people thought you were sisters. I'm glad to hear that you didn't let the rain dampen your spirits.
I'm loving the sound of Jon's Spanish themed menu for your get-together with Brendan and Lynne, and oh my didn't they spoil all of you with presents!
Cowgirl style definitely suits you and I'm swooning over your outfits. The flatlay one is my favourite, closely followed by the Levi's shirt and Anokhi maxi skirt. The Egyptian Revival brooch is a stunner, I actually gasped when I saw it! xxx

    1. Thanks, Anne! Normally we'll walk to one of Brum's many attractions but it's not as enjoyable with a brolly. We love going into Urban Outfitters for an idea of what the cooler kids are going to be wearing and looking at the reduced to clear rail for what's out of fashion!
I thought you might like the brooch! xxx

  12. Hi Vix, thank you once again for your style inspiration. I love your personal take on Cowgirl Chic with a charming juxtaposition of pretty floral blouse ( slightly faded) topped by an exquisite brooch, long suede coat, dusty suede boots, floaty skirt and a wide- brimmed hat. I have gone to my wardrobe and pulled out an outfit to wear ( only the boots were purchased new) and look forward to seeing what other outfits I can come up with. I have an old navy suede waistcoat ( a man's one) that I bought back in the 80s that would work well with the items too and some Liberty print blouses. Now I just need a horse!

    1. I love the sound of your Cowgirl Chic outfit, Alysia and am supremely envious of your navy suede waistcoat and Liberty blouse. I wonder if we could get away with a hobby horse? I've never been on a real horse! xxx

  13. It's good to know the name of your style, I haven't got as clue what mine is! I think Cowgirl Chic is a very feminine and flattering look on you and your friend. I adored the green dress and the green boots. The Egyptian revival brooch was simply gorgeous. All your outfits always look wonderful but I have to say the final outfit with the beautiful cheesecloth skirt and your hair up was simply stunning.

The menu for your 'dinner party' had me dribbling. I interrogated our Lidl manager about the lack of veg boxes and was told they no longer bother with them! Madness.

Thank you for the tip about Easter weekend bargain hunting on line. I am trying to be very good and not buy any more clothes as I have too many and haven't got room for more. I'm going to wait until I swap over winter weight for summer clothing and then maybe have a splurge. I have been getting rid of clothes that I don't like or love and seem to be filling bags weekly...

    Today the sun is shining!

    1. Thanks, Vronni! It's strange to Google "cowgirl" and see Jane Seymour dressed in something that looks exactly like my daily outfit. I like having a distinct style, it's a lot easier to know what to keep & what to sell when I'm dithering over my charity shop finds! Your style is very eclectic and you suit most things.
What a shame about your Lidl boxes. I still maintain that the average Walsallian is a salad dodger hence the reason there's so much good fruit and veg left on the shelves at the end of the day. It's burgers and fried chicken or nothing round here!
You are good to be disciplined. I got up on saturday morning, pulled ten things out of my wardrobe and listed them on eBay selling half of them in an hour, I feel very virtuous now!
      Hurrah for some sun! xxx

  16. Light bulb moment - I think I dress a tad cowgirl-chic, long skirts with heavy petticoats layered over boots, waistcoats, long sleaved shirts - yea haw! And I must admit I love love love the Gentleman Jack (with Suranne Jones) take on her outfits - again feminisation of masculine outfits.

  19. Oh . . . my goodness, I love the way all of your vintage clothes and jewelry looks on all of you, it's outstanding!

Don't know if you remember me when I used to follow you years ago. I'm so glad I found your blog again.

I recently created a new blog of my own, and recently did a post about a Jester Music Box that I found at a thrift store.

  23. Your costume references are spot on, Vix! I recently supported a Girl Scout leader in planning a Wild West luncheon, offering not only period-correct recipes (lard included), but also notes on the "why's" for those broad-brimmed hats, leather coats and tall boots, and versatile neckerchiefs. Even today, chic cowgirls prize their grannies' turquoise and silver pins! Do hope you'll consider expanding your collection of "tribal art" to include Navajo, Hopi and Zuni!
