Tales From The City

On Wednesday I caught the train over to Birmingham for my regular play date with Nikki.

It was another of those no plan days where, after a catch-up over fancy pots of tea, Cranberry & Rose Sencha for me and Jasmine Pearl for Nikki, in the legendary Yorks of Stephenson Street we wandered the city streets.

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery opened by then then Prince of Wales, Edward VII in 1885. Partially closed since 2020, it is home to a huge array of Pre-Raphaelite art and the world's largest collection of Edward Burne-Jones' work. The museum is due to reopen on 10th February for the eagerly awaited Victorian Radicals exhibition (I've already got my ticket!)

The clock tower is known as Big Brum.

Birmingham Town Hall is the oldest building in Chamberlain Square, it opened in 1834 and remains a popular live music venue (the last gig I saw here was Big Country back in the mid-1990s). The building in the foreground is the Chamberlain Memorial, unveiled in 1880 in honour of the former Liberal mayor, Joseph Chamberlain, whose son, Neville, later became the British PM.

Opened in 1925, the Hall of Memory stands as a memorial to the men and women of Birmingham who gave their lives in the First World War, Second World War and in active service since 1945.

The Library of Birmingham opened in 2013 and cost approx. £188 million. It is the largest cultural space and largest regional library in Europe.

Opened by the late queen in 1991, Birmingham Symphony Hall seats 2,262 and is ranked as having the best acoustics in the United Kingdom and the 7th best in the world. I saw Joe Jackson there in 1992.

The sculpture, The Battle of Gods and Giants (2009) by Roderick Tye is said to represent the city's struggle to rebuild its centre.

With 35 miles of waterways, Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice.

Closed when we walked past on Wednesday, Ikon, is the city's leading contemporary art gallery. Its premises, a glorious Grade II listed Neo-Gothic building unveiled in 1877, was formerly a school.

The Black Sabbath Bridge, opened in 2019 in honour of the legendary Birmingham band formed in 1968. The photo above was taken on a previous visit, that tree was bare on Wednesday!

Isn't Nikki's vintage carpet bag amazing? £8!! Bargain of the decade!

The Golden Boys honours inventors Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), James Watt (1736-1819) and William Murdoch (1754 – 1839). Portrayed studying steam engine plans, the three Brummies revolutionised the steam engine, the technology which drove the Industrial Revolution.

After a rummage in Cow, a huge vintage clothes shop in the city's Digbeth area, we walked over to Snow Hill for lunch at The Indian Brewery where, as always, we were greeted as long lost friends by beautiful boss, Marni. Nikki had Chilli Paneer and I stuck to my usual Chaart Attack accompanied by pints of the Birmingham-brewed Pekok lager.

The actual brewery (where the Indian Brewery produce their beer) is currently based in Aston but is in the process of relocating around the corner from the restaurant in Mary Ann Street. By April it should be open as a tapas bar and for brewery tours (we've already put our names down!)

Reflected in the glass is the Post Office Tower which, like me, became operational in December 1966. Standing at 152 metres, it's the tallest building in Birmingham.

After a quick whizz round Monsoon in the Bull Ring we hugged goodbye and caught our respective trains home. Thanks for a fab day, bab! See you soon.

Thursday consisted of a swim, a 'Spoons breakfast and short drive to one of our favourite Birmingham suburbs for a spot of charity shopping. In addition to some good stuff for the stockroom, a huge haul of vintage vinyl (which I'll share soon), I snaffled myself not one but two pairs of boots. I spotted the green El Naturalista ankle boots a fortnight ago and as they were still there I took it as a sign that they had to be mine. I bought the Fly London biker boots for eBay but made the mistake of trying them on. Not only absurdly comfy but made in Europe, the El Naturalista originally retailed at £143 and the Fly London are still £120 on the website, that's a grand total of £263 but a combined cost to me of just £24!

Here I am gathering my strength earlier today. Jon decided that it would be the day we finally tackled the dreaded middle room aka The Shit Tip or The Dumping Ground as he has plans. This is the room where a young man took his own life by hanging himself from the light fitting in the 1920s. It's directly below the bathroom and the ceiling is riddled with water stains from when the bath sprung a leak a decade ago. Although my Dad never knew the history of this room he refused to spend time in it saying it had a malevolent presence. Neither of us get any bad vibes in here although, quite often, we've seen a ghost cat which walks around the room, climbs the stairs and vanishes midway up.  We think all of the cats we've ever owned see the ghost cat too, they acted really strangely in this room (and William still does), chasing things that aren't there with their eyes all a-glitter and fur on end.

As I'm sure you're aware, I'm so not into all that carefully curated Instagram w*nkery, so here it is in all it's cobweb-strewn, stained, dusty (and possibly haunted) glory.

Can we fix it? I'll keep you posted! It's a lot less cluttered and cleaner now.

Have a fantastic weekend. We're out on the town tomorrow night celebrating Tony's birthday. I'll be back with photos and gossip very soon!

    1. The library is such a cool building, there's gardens on some of the levels where visitors can take books outside and read in the sunshine. There's even fruit tees so you can help yourself to a healthy snack.
      Have a wonderful weekend! xxx

  2. Hello from Miami! I wanted to let you know that I was relieved to see the Shit Tip room, since I also have one. The light in the room is amazing, though.

Interestingly, my husband is the spirit-sensitive one. We rented a house not far from the one we have now, for only nine months. The ghost sightings by my husband were fascinating and regular -- and included a seated family at a phantom dining table and a white-robed woman that he **thought was me and spoke to, AHH!**. (Husband is not religious and does not even "believe" in spirits -- ironic!). The worst was a man hovering over the bed, for obvious reasons. When my dog passed away, he kept seeing her as well.

I love your tales and read regularly. Nikki and you are a fantastic twosome on the town!

    1. Hello! I love that a Shit Tip exists in Miami, that's made both Jon and mine's day!
I'm fascinated by your husband's experiences in the rental house. Like him, I'm not religious and don't believe in ghosts but can't explain away the weird stuff we've experienced. How bizarre about the white robed lady that he thought was you and the hovering man above the bed, I'd have been terrified!
Thanks so much for leaving such an interesting comment! xxx

    2. We are kindred spirits, no pun intended! I have been reading for 13 years, with no plans of stopping. I discovered the blog with this post: https://vintagevixon.blogspot.com/2010/10/rockstar-lifestyle-on-rockbottom-budget.html

How's that for a blast from the past? You've seen me through two marriages, bwa hahahaha!

  3. Fab pics of Birmingham. We've just booked a couple of days there. Originally we were going in March 2020....better late than never. Am hoping to see the big greenman and thr NT back to backs if we can get on the tour. I'm on Instagram and being a contrary sort take great pleasure in posting random stuff and non filtered photos. I like to keep it real!!Arilx

    1. Yay! You'll have so much fun, there's so much to see and do (and eat!) I've still not been to any of the NT properties in the city centre. Don't forget the Botanical Gardens, a short walk or bus ride out of the centre in Edgbaston or Winterbourne House, an Arts and Crafts mansion with an amazing cafe.
Oh yeah, keep it real at all times (unless that means endless photos of your dinner - which I'm pretty sure you're not guilty of!) xxx

  4. With apologies to Wallace and Gromit, you and Nikki definitely had a Grand Day Out.

Good luck with the Doom Room. I think they are de rigueur in creative households (well, that is what I tell myself in this place 🤣). But any space which has a woodburner is definitely worth sorting out - and who knows what little forgotten gems you might find behind the cobwebs?

    1. We did! We had a lovely time just wandering around looking at things, it doesn't matter how many times we visit Birmingham (and we both spent years working in the city centre), we always spot something we'd not noticed before.
I'm glad I'm not alone with the dreaded middle room. The wood burner really needs to be appreciated more than it already is. xxx

  5. I really must map out who lives where, where any centralized meetup points might be should I get my brave face on. Birmingham looks like an interesting place to wander for a few days and get lost, figuratively, in the details. The boots had to be yours.

  6. Thanks for letting me tag along on your trip to Birmingham. Much as I love the old architecture, it's the Library of Birmingham which made me gasp. What a stunning building!
I've read about the Victorian Radicals exhibition on Facebook, and I'm not surprised you've already got your ticket. Do you happen to know until when it is running? I couldn't find it anywhere at the time, but if it's still on in June we might put it on our itinerary.
Swooning over those boots, both of which would have come home with me if they'd been my size.
Can't wait to see what you'll do with the possibly haunted middle room! xxx

    1. You're in luck, Ann, the exhibition runs until the end of October! The library is incredible and a five minute walk from the Museum, so you can visit both very easily.
I couldn't believe my luck with the boots what with my common foot size! I know Lynn loves her Fly London boots and now I know why, they're like walking on air! xxx

  7. Another lovely day out...that carpet bag is amazing!
Well done on the boots too!
I didn't know about the suicide in your house - or the ghost cat. My hair's standing up on end! xxx

    1. We had a lovely day and it went in a flash. Wasn't Nikki lucky to snag that gorgeous bag? I've seen them for £££s online!
I didn't really need any more boots but you know how it is!
My Dad had a weird sixth sense, Mum deliberately never told him about the hanging but he picked up that something was amiss any way. It's funny how it's the bathroom, the room directly above, where I had the scary experiences (must be the vibes coming through the floorboards!)
Jon's been using his tape measure and drawing diagrams. something's afoot! xxx

  8. Can't decide which pattern appeals to me more: Nikki's bag or your lunch. * The presence of an "atmosphere" in a house can be so tangible that it effects its saleability. A realtor friend once encountered a property "with a problem" and when she researched (including asking friends who admit to being religious, like me) solutions, she discovered the Chinese recommend "leasing the house to a large family with many happy children...who will drive away hungry ghosts with their shrieks of laughter." And so she did. And it worked.

    1. Hello Beth! Lunch in the Indian Brewery is always almost too pretty to eat. Isn't Nikki's bag a stunner? She dropped lucky with that beauty.
Apart from the time I was thrown against the bathroom wall and had the hand shaped bruise to prove it we've not been unduly bothered by the "presence" in the house. So many complete strangers approach me in the street and tell me I have an amazing positive aura, maybe that keeps the house well balanced? xxx

  9. Wow look at you two, what fabulous outfits not least your gorgeous afghans! Indian food, a lager or two, a library to settle in - that alone would be plenty for me! how sad that someone felt influenced to take their own life in that middle room - I felt chilled looking tbh but I'm a brainwashed coward (mother was a clairvoyant and I was over exposed to fakery with a smattering of reality). We had our own house exorcised in the 90s as apparently I was attracting bad vibes that became a bit too much to live with! your odd cat manifesting might not be a cat at all - you have to go with your instinct I guess and clearly you feel ok with it so it probably feels ok with you :)

    1. Thanks, Betty! We certainly stand out amongst a veritable ocean of black nylon puffa jackets! Nikki and I have very similar taste in clothes and have a few identical pieces, one day we'll both turn up wearing the same dress!
I'm not surprised the haunted thingy makes you uneasy with your unconventional mum, mine was more into hedonism and the spirits you could drink rather than anything otherworldly! The ghost cat is all black, we haven't seen him since William moved in but William definitely goes a bit mad when he's in the room! xxx

  11. I can beat your Shit Tip room......with Hovel House. In the midst of massive whole house renovations we are living out of bags, cooking on camping stoves on cardboard boxes, eating off plastic plates, washing up in a camping sink and cleaning our teeth at the backyard tap ( Hellooo neighbours) and if I have made it sound remotely fun... it isn't. 12. You have a lovely looking home, lots of interesting corners to delve into and shelves to explore. I don't trust those Instagram homes that're styled to sterility. Sofas that don't look like they're lounged on, everything all matchy-matchy. Urgh! Your day out in Brum looked fun. I studied and lived there decades ago, and recently fancied a trip down that way. Looked up train tickets - 75 quid for a day return, daylight robbery - so I'll settle for browsing your photos instead. Val x

  13. The shit tip (hee hee) is about to turn into something beautiful I'm sure. Maybe a jukebox that plays songs by itself once in awhile? I see a lovely sunburst wall clock in there...
I love your photos of gorgeous, historical architecture. My closest city, Toronto, continues to be horrible about not saving old buildings-and they are babies compared to the things you share. It's such a shame. That Ikon building is so wow.
    Happy Saturday🙂

    1. Hi Stephanie. There's been a lot of measuring and scribbling. I daren't ask! A jukebox would be lovely, though!
That sunburst clock is one of a couple, this one needs some work, hence the reason - like most of the stuff in there - it's been relegated to the shit tip!
That's so sad about Toronto. The historic buildings in our town have an uncanny knack of burning down in the night. I'd happily live in the Ikon, I bet there's room for a jukebox and a dancefloor in there! xxx

  14. Loved all these photos and the architecture is a dream! I've been scrolling up and down and I still don't know what to look at. There's just so many details as well as I know there's more history behind each one them. Fascinating! Let's talk about Nikki's outfit and yours too! I wish there was another way to say it without being too repetitive but I just loved both of your looks, there's so much going on, from the different textures to colors to even Nikki's bag! Very eyecatching and the coolest thing I've ever seen in my whole life. It looks so great with her outfit and what an amazing bargain! 15. I think I would feel very at home in Birmingham, it's architecture and statues are on a par with my home town of Manchester's. I LOVE your new boots, the biker boots look super comfy ... thank goodness you tried them on. :-)

You've got to trust a cat's instincts when it comes to room with a presence, they are even more sensitive than dogs, and suffer no fools, even ghostly ones lightly.

Well done for clearing out the middle room - who knows, maybe the ghost will appreciate it too. We don't have enough room for one to be a shit-tip, so the ones we have seem to take it in turns to accumulate kipple...

  17. I just CAN'T keep the entire house tidy! I really struggle. Managed to tidy up the spare room for my sister and her boyf staying last week but the front room still had lots of clutter (and our bedroom and study). Now, I tidied the front room and our bedroom but the spare room is now a mess! Your middle room is definitely less sh**t-heapish than my messy rooms! I despair!
When will I try a Chaat attack?
I love your boots and green ankle boots though too high for me, I suspect. I really like Fly London boots. My headteacher was wearing a pair of shoes or boots and I asked him whether they were from Fly London and he was amazed that I recognised them! Ha!

Chaart Attack is so delicious, Nikki tried something new but I don't think I could find anything tastier so I stick with what I know.

I always think the Indian Brewery looks absolutely fabulous every time that you go, it almost makes me want to hop on a train to Brum. Hard to believe it's over a decade since I set foot in the city. It doesn't look too much changed from your photos. I went to see someone at the Symphony hall many years ago, and I've been wracking my brains to no avail to try to remember who or what it was. Good luck with the room reorganising. I'm still amongst the chaos of the new kitchen and wondering how my house will ever look normal again. xx

How far is Birmingham from you by train? I recently read an article about two British girls who took a flight to Spain and met there because the plane tickets to Spain and back were significantly cheaper than the train tickets. I can't remember where exactly they lived in the UK, but they were not that far apart from one another and the train ticket was something like a hundred pounds!
