Stars on 45

Hola! Our garden might be a bewildering wilderness but it does make a great backdrop for outfit photos.

On Saturday I messed around with some side plaits and wore a Kharibu block printed maxi skirt with a Monsoon cotton blouse for a day mostly spent reading and doing stuff around the house.

On Sunday I wore my hair in milkmaid braids and donned a Kharibu block printed maxi dress for  a trip  to the clearance charity shop and coffee round at my brother's. On Monday I wore my hair in side twists accompanied with a Dilli Grey midi dress and Dilli Grey quilted jacket (worn inside out) for an exciting coffee date. With who? Well, seeing as you asked......

On the 10:10, bound for Birmingham International back in December, a beautiful woman boarded the train carrying a travel bag. I bet she's not off to Tenerife, I whispered to Jon but, lo and behold, she ended up on the same flight and even more surprisingly, on the way home we were seated next to each other. She told me that she'd pointed me out to her friend and said, I bet that beautiful woman isn't going to Tenerife and we spent the four hour flight chatting. Upon landing and reunited with Jon, I couldn't stop talking about my new friend. Did you swap numbers? He asked, and of course, me being me, it hadn't occurred to ask. Fast forward ten days later and would you believe it, we bumped into each other in town. As soon as I left the airport I was kicking myself for not getting your number, she told me. On Monday we finally met up and spent almost three hours chatting. It's crazy to think that we've lived a couple of streets away from each other for almost a quarter of a century and never met before!

On Tuesday (today!) it was the turn of a Naked Generation block printed midi dress and pigtails for swimming, 'Spoons and some charity shopping.

And, talking of which, here's a few recent finds....

A job lot of vintage 1980s mohair hand knit jumpers with the original shop tags which had been donated by the owner of a Birmingham boutique which had closed down several decades ago. I'm saving these for the festivals.

Two pairs of earrings (£1.25 and £1.50 respectively). The green glass ones (they look more turquoise in this photo) are in my ears right now.

I was mad about Art Deco as a kid but these days lean towards the more fluid lines of Art Nouveau. I couldn't resist this 1930s English-made beehive plant pot I found lurking in the 50p bin. I've no idea where Etsy sellers get their daft prices from, there's an identical one listed on there for £60!

This vintage ceramic pinch jug (£2) is the perfect match with our 1960s Secla, Portugal "owl" mugs  found in a charity shop a couple of years ago.

I love a wash bag especially when it features the divine Hera print by Liberty and costs less than a £1!

Now taking pride of place in the utility room, these framed 19th Century advertisements were £2 from the clearance charity shop on Sunday. I studied Russian at school & was absolutely useless at it. Mr Köpke's assessment in my end of year report read Victoria does not understand this language. The only word I can recognise on those prints is Moscow

Fellow vinyl enthusiast & lifelong collector, Stephanie asked for a peek at our most recently acquired 45s. As I've mentioned before, we still own almost every record we've ever bought but, as loads of them are tucked away in one of the sheds, sometimes it's easier to repurchase a single rather than risk life and limb rummaging for an existing copy. Several of our local chazzas sell 3 singles for £1 so you can't really say no, can you?

I was obsessed with Haysi Fantayzee back in the day, I've got their one and only album Battle Hymns for Children Singing (1983) somewhere and bumped into Kate Garner (now a photographer) in downtown Mumbai many years ago. Kid Creole & The Coconuts takes me back to our girls' school discos and The Housemartins remind me of my college years.

Booker T, Mobiles and Haircut One Hundred...more teenage disco memories.

Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack, choon!

I'm pretty sure we've got at least three other copies of Up Town Top Ranking buried in the sheds!

Silly Games, another duplicate (or possibly triplicate!) We both loved it even more after watching Steve McQueen's award winning anthology series Small Axe, where it played continually in the Lovers Rock episode.

Four weeks into 2024 and I'm on to my 9th & 10th reads of this year. I'm had Jan Marsh's Pre-Raphaelite Women for ages but have only gazed upon the beautiful images so far. Like almost everyone I know, I loved the Inspector Montalbano series on BBC4 and the Andrea Camilleri books are true to the show, with intriguing plots and plenty of witty observations.

This afternoon I completed the fifth and final module of The History of Royal Fashion, a free course run by the University of Glasgow.

Next week I've enrolled on one of the Open University's free courses, Janis Joplin and The Sexual Revolution. My love of learning makes me a philomath (I'm slightly better with Greek than I was with Russian).

Never mind meerkats, meet our beercat! I know we're biased but isn't William a handsome boy?

I'm off on a girls' day out tomorrow, stay tuned for some tales from the city very soon!

    1. Hello Kelly! Looking back the 1980s were the golden age for music, so much good stuff. Tom Tom Club never get old, they sound just as fresh when 6Music play them now. Pelican West! I bought my friend Liz that album for her 15th birthday!
Those jumpers couldn't be more 1980s if they tried. I'm keeping them away from William or I suspect he'd make himself a bed out of them. xxx

  2. Oh gosh, this takes me back! I loved Haircut 100. And Haysi Fantayazi. 'John Wayne's is Big Leggy' wouldn't pass muster these days, but I'm not giving up my copy! 😀
And those mohair jumpers! I loved the 80s 🙂
What a brilliant story about your new friend, and her living so close. Hope we'll get to see her on the blog at some point xxx

    1. The much-maligned 1980s...politics aside, it was a brilliant era for music and individual fashion. Hayzi Fantayzee were so cool, I wanted to dress like Kate so badly!
I was so excited to spot those jumpers, I can't wait to see what the hip young things think of them at the festivals.
My new found friend is a fascinating and inspirational woman! xxx

  4. Those splendid mohair jumpers make me long for the radio broadcast remotes I worked in the 80s wearing black jeans, a gaudy sweater (leather flowers & rhinestones!) and black leather shoes with chunky high heels. * Critics please note I forgo the dropped waisted floral bags sold as dresses and did not swoon over Princess Di's wedding tent. * I really, really admire those floofy sweaters! And William.

    1. Loving the sound of your radio broadcast outfit, Beth. What a shame it was the radio, though, you needed to be seen! My Mum always wore her mohair jumpers with black leather trousers and enough chunky fake gold chain jewellery to gave Mr T a run for his money!
Funnily enough Princess Di's wedding tent featured in the Royal Fashion History course, and looked as ugly and creased as I remember the first time round!
      William says thanks! xxx

  5. I met one of my closest friends by just happening to sit next to her at a large kickoff meeting. I remembered her work, and invited her to something lunch that needed to fill tables and she was free. We just kept connecting and soon, fast friends! I love your story. William is beautiful but now I have a kitty in my life I am partial to him, though always room in my heart to love more animals.

William is so freakin' adorable. He and Vizzini together would melt the hearts of all!

  10. you do look pretty with the plaits.. love the Naked Generation dress. How funny to find a new friend and have lived so near for so long without crossing paths! Some of those singles are probably worth a few quid now, I wish I still had my little portable red and white record player from the 70s! The earrings are beautiful, I still have the ones you gave me they will be getting an outing on our next holiday! Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! The Naked Generation dress was a cheap eBay find, the previous owner had sewn up the neckline and chopped off the tassels, it took about 10 minutes and £1.50 spent on new tassels to repair it!
It makes you wonder how many potential friends are living close-by and we've yet to meet.
I think I had the same portable record player as you, was it Fidelity? xxx

      Delete
    2. I suspect it was a Fidelity - how I loved it - although I scratched nearly every record I owned! I never did get the hang of the stylus. My first record ws Joe Cocker's With a Little Help from My Friends and then there was no stopping me, I think young people now miss out so much on what we had - crowding into the music shop and shuffling through all the records to find 'the one', waiting for the number one to be announced on the radio, watching top of the pops to see how Pans People were going to lead you into the latest dance moves.... polishing my beautiful record player lol!

      Delete
    3. Luckily for us my Dad was a Hi-Fi nut so made sure I changed the needle regularly. Jon has a fit about people buying those cheap record players from B&M, he says the vinyl will get ruined using cheap equipment.
You were a cool kid, that's a fabulous first record. Mine was One Way Ticket by Eruption, still love a bit of Disco. Oh yes, I remember Liz & I took it in turns to smuggle a transistor into school on a Tuesday so we could listen to the midweek charts, hearing an amazing song and often having to wait a week to hear it again before saving like mad to buy it! xxx

    1. Thanks, Claire! I love finding zany 1980s pieces, the last decade before fast fashion took over so even the high street stuff was generally made in the UK. I felt sorry for that beehive pot, fancy being looked after for almost a century and ending up in the dump bin.
There's so many free courses available with the OU, I'll be an expert in everything at this rate ! xxx

  15. Hi Vix, well done on securing the mohair jumpers. I am sure they will be popular at festivals. My mum made me a white mohair cardigan back in the 80s. Talking of 80s bands last week we went to see The Skids and From The Jam ( the two original band members minus Paul Weller of course) and tonight are off to see Depeche Mode. I too have the Jan Marsh book.

Your block printed dresses are really lovely and suit you perfectly. I only have one and tend to keep it for holidays. I like how you have layered yours to wear year round. They are too good to just keep for the summer months.

    1. Hello Alysia! Those mohair jumpers are such a throwback, aren't they? I started wearing vintage in the 1980s as I wasn't keen on '80s fashion and although I'd probably never wear it now I do appreciate the madness of some of the fashions.
You're doing well with your gig going! I loved The Skids & The Jam back in the day (there's plenty of their albums & singles lurking in the shed!) I saw Big Country many times and was very sad when Stuart Adamson died. Have a brilliant time with Depeche Mode. I've heard great things about the current tour!
I used to save my block printed clothes for holidays but I love the challenge of styling them so they're a bit more winter-appropraite.
There's some beautiful images in the Jan Marsh book, isn't there? xxx

Fantastic finds too, particularly the beehive plant pot, pinch jug and the 19th century Russian advertisements. And those mohair jumpers will go down a treat at this Summer's festivals!
How wonderful that you were able to reconnect with that beautiful woman. I'm usually too shy to ask for someone's phone number ...

    1. Thanks, Ann! I'm so rubbish with making friends and swapping details, I get really annoyed with myself for letting people go for the want to asking for a phone number.
Some of chazzas seem to be under the mistaken idea that all vinyl is worth a fortune regardless of genre or condition. Luckily, here in the unfashionable Black Country people still think we're weird for wanting to buy it..."haven't you heard of CDs?" xxx

  18. So cool! I always feel as if 45's don't get as much love from vinyl collectors as LP's, but I don't know why-playing 45's is the original mixed tape🙂. Great to see the range you can find there. Green Onions always reminds me of the mods from Quadrophenia. I love the Tom Tom Club too, was lucky to see them live on a "CBGB Tour" with the Ramones and Blondie in the '80s. And Kid Creole is quoted here often, as in "why can't you be like Endicott?" Thanks for sharing Vix✨👍

    1. Thanks a brilliant analogy, Stephanie. You're spot on comparing 45s with a mix tape. One of our friends has a 1960s jukebox which is a great way of both storing singles and enjoying them. If only we had the room!
I'm so envious of you seeing the CBGB tour back in the day. I was mad on Blondie and have everything they ever realised up until 1982. I didn't see them live until Glastonbury a few years ago and I was so disappointed. xxx

    2. I would love a jukebox too-I think we should both get one-it could squeeze in somehow😂
I love Blondie too, and have those original LP's still. You've seen so many bands and singers at the festivals that I wish I could see, so we're even, I think🙂
and I forgot to write that I loved your hat, braids and dress combo here too.

    3. Don't encourage me, Stephanie! Jon's currently walking around with a tape measure, he's decided we need to organise the vinyl and move the record player to the middle room which means lots of tidying and rejigging furniture - wish me luck! xxx
