We've finally waved goodbye to the incessant rain and instead have the kind of Winter conditions I'm happy to live with, bitingly cold but brilliantly sunny. The kind of weather that it's easy to dress for - thermal leggings and Nordic socks hidden under my maxi skirts and stompy boots, polonecks, Indian quilted jackets and bastard massive sheepskin hats.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures the pavements were ice-free when we walked down to the baths for our twice weekly swim at 7.30am this morning. Under my vintage suede jacket I wore an early 1970s Anokhi partially quilted jacket, my Dilli Grey block printed maxi skirt and one of my trusty sheepskin hats bought for 75p from the Salvation Army over a decade ago.
This silver moss agate (?) pendant was in the tin of tribal treasures Jon bought me for Xmas. The silver snake chain was 200 rupees and bought from a flea market in India about 10 years ago.
William's fur goes all static- y, a sure sign the weather's icy cold.
This vintage Ritu Kumar for Monsoon dress has featured on the blog many times in the four years I've owned it. I wore it on Saturday and Sunday. Yes, I repeat outfits!
Another treasure from of Lord Jon's tin of treats this moldavite pendant. I bought the silver Rajasthani hoop earrings from Beautiful Days in 2022.
Beth asked for a close-up of my bag....a £2 Vinted bargain!
And on the subject of requests, my friend Kezzie asked for a close-up of the leather and Gore-Tex Clarks' walking boots I wore to Wightwick Manor on Friday. They were £3 from the clearance charity shop just before Xmas. Not the sexiest looking things in the world but warm, waterproof and comfy!
We found a few bits in the charity shop on Sunday. A vintage mohair & wool newsboy cap; a vintage linen shift dress; a 1990s German-made needlecord blazer; a vintage embroidered tunic; 1970s Kangol angora trilby; an organic cotton top by fairtrade brand Omnes with the £39 tag still attached (now in my wardrobe); Vintage Pola of Finland boucle jacket and a 1980s black leather waistcoat. The paper label attached to the Omnes top can be put in soil and it'll grow into a plant - how cool is that?
My William Morris radar is always at its most powerful after a visit to Wightwick and I snaffled this Morris & Co makeup bag from the 50p basket.
As we had a few appointments (the annual boiler service and a tradesman popping round to give us a quote) Monday was a working from home day. The vintage blouse is a new addition to the wardrobe, an under-a-fiver Vinted buy described by the lovely seller as "Beautifully embroidered Chinese blouse, This was bought for me by my parents on a trip to Hong Kong in 1976. Sadly I didn't like it at the time and never wore it! But I kept it over the years and now, of course, it's too small."
Unlike the seller, I'm the same size as I was as a teenager so it's perfect for me!
The details - Afghan earrings (eBay, 2020), Banjara 1940s dowry belt (bought from Anjuna Flea Market in Goa, 2001), Kuchi hair decoration (Jon's box of delights!)
On the subject of requests, reader Sarah asked if I'd share a photo of our bookshelves. The Billy bookcase on the landing is groaning under the weight of both fiction and books about Pre-Raphaelite & Surrealist art, mythology, travel, ceramics, gardening, rock music, vintage cars, tattoos and photography. Despite donating most of the fiction (with the exception of Mick Herron) back to the charity shop after we've read it, most of the shelves are two books deep.
Here's my collection of vintage fashion and craft books which live on top of my haberdashery cupboard. I bought those 1930s Art Deco penguin bookends from a Walsall jumble sale when I was 21.
We've owned most of these 1960s "kitchen sink" novels, Agatha Christie thrillers and James Bond books since we were teenagers. Theses are currently shrouded in cobwebs and piled up in the corner of the middle room, waiting for one of us to do something with them.
My Dad collected these Penguin Classics as a young man (and I've added a few more to the collection). The articulated monkey was made in Germany in the 1930s and was my Mum's as a child. They live in the glazed cupboard in the middle room.
Below is what the middle room looks like when its tidy (taken from a photoshoot for Your Home magazine back in 2015 HERE)
Here's the cook books. They live in the glazed cupboard in the kitchen.
Here's my current read, recommended by We Need To Talk About Kevin author, Lionel Shriver. Set during the English Civil war, its an astonishing tale of violence, madness and forbidden love and, as this week's History of Royal Fashion module is The Stuarts, it couldn't be more apt.
I'm very excited about snaffling a couple of members only tickets for the premiere of Poor Things this evening at Walsall Light.
I never read reviews before going to the cinema but I love Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe and the trailer looks brilliantly bonkers.
See you soon!
I remember the magazine shoot, in fact I know I’ve still got my copy somewhere. Time someone else snapped you two up for another.
ReplyDeleteI think we can match each other on the amount of books we’ve got between us haha xx
I can't believe it was almost nine years ago, can you?
DeleteI must return your Manrique book, we both loved it. xxx
Ah! What ever happened to jumble sales? I adore your Penguin book ends. Jon's gift to you the tin of delights seems to provide you with endless beautiful jewellery pieces. A most fabulous gift. I loved the hair decoration in your hair in particular. Your new vintage blouse is exquisite. That's a lesson in not hanging on to things that you don't like or don't fit but at least someone benefited in this case. I had no idea cats could get static fur when it's cold - another thing I've learnt! Stay warm...
ReplyDeletexxx
The last jumbo (Black Country speak for a JS) I went to must have been about six years ago and it was just a mountain of stained Primarni rubbish and a pile of pink plastic toys. I left empty handed!
DeleteJon did so well spotting that tin of treasures on Ebay - I love those hair decorations, I'm tempted to turn a few into necklaces and brooches to give them all a fair chance of being worn!
I can get electric shocks from stroking William's fur, it's really bad today! xxx
The embroidery on your Chinese blouse is quite fabulous. That lady’s weight gain is definitely a wardrobe gain for you (and I am also the same size I was at 18). Hope you enjoy/enjoyed your film.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jayne! The film was utterly spellbinding.
DeleteIsn't that embroidery colourful & pretty? My parents thought I was going to be really tall as a child as I was one of the tallest and with the biggest feet in my class and the first to need a bra but I stopped growing at 11 (upwards and outwards!) xxx
I always love seeing people's bookshelves, so thank you for sharing. Good to hear I'm not the only one whose shelves are two books deep!
ReplyDeleteMy ex-boyfriend and I used to collect those "kitchen sink" paperbacks, and I've still got quite a few of them I will never part with. I suspect that some of yours are even earlier than the 1960s. xxx
My pleasure, Ann! You must do the same. I'd like to see your collection.
DeleteI think you might be right about the age of some of those paperbacks, I think some of the James Bond Pan books are from the mid-1950s - they are so cobwebby I'm hestitant to flick through them! xxx
If the film is based on the book by Scottish author Alasdair Gray, expect it to be a bit weird! His masterpiece was 'Lanark'. Emma Stone is a worthy actress to play the lead in Poor Things. My Dad used to get those Reader's Digest books. I never thought they were 'real' books except the World Atlas which my sister and I would trawl over with our big travel plans!xxx
ReplyDeleteHello! The book was credited at the end of the film. I shall have to read up about him. Poor Things was utterly mesmerising and totally weird, amazing cinematography, too.
DeleteMy parents always said that the Reader's Digest Abridged novel weren't "real books" but liked the reference books - the World Atlas, Family Heath and British Garden Birds were like bibles when I was little! xxx
No idea why my comments are coming up as anonymous but it's me!
DeleteHello Annie! Blogger is mad lately. I keep finding my own replies in Spam! xxx
DeleteI enjoyed looking at your bookshelves and hearing all about your books. I love Agatha Christie and would happily relieve you of them ,I think another Kinky shed is what you need ,just for books. 🤣🤣🤣. Thanks for an most enjoyable post.xx
ReplyDeleteThanks sarah, I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I think we probably need a Kinky shed for both our books and our vinyl! I'd happily pass on some of my Christie books, there's far too many. xxx
DeleteLoving the glimpses of Jon's Christmas presents to you. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou must be in your hot blood. I've been layering up and wearing my thickest coats and hats and still been freezing cold! The wind has been biting too. I haven't even ventured outside today!
Are those Jon's sweetie jars you have on display in your cabinet?
I've not hear of Poor Things. It sounds interesting. Enjoy! xxx
Thanks, Claire! He did well, didn't he?
DeleteI was sweltering after my swim, I had cheeks rosier than Aunt Sally by the time I'd walked home via Lidl and struggled carrying the groceries home.
Those are Jon's empty sweet jars, now filled with buttons, press studs, bias binding and hooks and eyes. His sweet tooth has its advantages - lots of storage!
You absolutely have to see Poor Things - it's amazingly bonkers! xxx
Such a treat seeing all your books! Just love the bookends they are stunning.
ReplyDeleteYou must be super human it was freezing cold today, I have four layers on, one of which is thermal and I was so cold when I had to go out. Soon scuttled home! Looking forward to Spring!
Thanks so much, Carole! I'm amazed those bookends have survived all those years.
DeleteJon often calls me "super human", he feels the cold and I don't. I drive me mad insisting on the bedroom window being open in all weathers. Mind you, after walking down to the baths, our half-mile swim, walking back via Lidl and carrying the veg box, two bottles of cola, a bottle of milk and two tubs of Greek yoghurt we were positively glowing when we got home! xxx
Kathryn and the Ancients
ReplyDeleteGotcha! x
DeleteGreetings from chilly St. Louis! The croup has been going around here, not COVID thank Goddess, but still tough to get rid of. The ladies have been going back over some of your posts using the full screen option that I was finally able to show them how to use on the dreadful computer at the center since I cannot get out to the right now due to being sick. They happily examine every photo!! And they are going to have a fit of glee when they get to this post! I promised to ask for them....they don't know what Vinted is, nor do I...and they seem to NEED to know....ha! They are also ENCHANTED with the box of silver jewelry that Lord Jon picked up for you!!!! [The old dudes all nod wisely and say that this is made possible by Lord Jon's connections in the "royal web"...I get such pleasure out of the stories they fabricate about the social circles that you must move in due to Lord Jon's connections! So cute!] They all LOVE you both! Every detail is examined...every detail is greatly loved!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year from your OLDEST fans!!
Sending love to Kathryn & the gang in chilly St. Louis! It sounds like the same virus which has been making its rounds around here - Lord Jon's still coughing three weeks later but numerous Covid tests are negative. Hoping you feel much, much better soon.
DeleteJon did well with the tin of jewellery, didn't he? There's only one thing I've passed on - a ring with a character from Star Wars on it (Yoda? I've never watched it)
Vinted is an online secondhand site (like eBay), its become hugh in the UK in the last year or so, even sponsoring major football events. It's a clear thing because once you've bought a few things it remembers your size and the kind of thing you like and brings up suggestions as soon as someone has listed them online so its like having a personal shopper!
It's always a joy to hear from you all, loads of love from Vix & Lord Jon! xxx
I am TOTALLY obsessed with Vinted!!! It's like magic! I find everything I want on it!!! Kezzie xx
DeleteAnd everything I didn't think I wanted, too! It's a great way of whiling away ten minutes if I'm waiting for a train! xxx
DeleteOooh, I love it when you give us a look round the house! Loving all the Agatha Christies and Penguins!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the picture of the boots with me! Lovely to see such beauties!
Aren't that Chinese and the Omnes top great! So beautiful! I bought a lovely Zara top in the charity shop before Christmas and I know you'd like it- it's of that Omnes top ilk.
xx
Thanks, Kezzie! The house is such a mess at the moment, thank goodness for the odd archive photo. I'm amazed that those penguins are still intact, they've moved around a fair bit in 56 years!
DeleteThose boots were such a find, I love that they're brown, they blend in well with the Indian block prints when I'm National Trusting. xxx
Your book shelf looks like my daughter's! I want to read more this year and have more book discussions. Snow is light so I'll want to get home, but one Tuesday I'll try a bit of thrift hunting before heading back to my small town after being in the big city.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not alone in my book collecting madness! I tried to make a concerted effort last year to read instead of scroll in that lazy time between showering and eating tea rather than just read in bed (or sunbathing). Good luck with the thrift shopping. share what you find! xxx
DeleteI love the first outfit, very Cossack. Vinted is addictive isn’t it? I can also get some amazing bargains for little Miss on there. I enjoyed the peak at your bookshelves, sooooo many books. I’m not sure the first stone is agate but it’s quite hard to tell on the photo. It looks a bit like snowflake obsidian, but that could just be my screen making it look darker xxx
ReplyDeleteVinted is a real obsession - both Jon and I are hooked! A great source for keeping Little Miss looking beautiful. I shall Google snowflake obsidian, that's a new one on me and would be very apt if the weather continues to be this cold! xxx
DeleteI am excited about "Poor Things" - I loved the director's "The Lobster" and "The Favourite."
ReplyDeleteI love seeing all your bookshelves, Vix! Mine are a disaster (hidden as they are behind the secret door), and barely organized - I have them stacked this and that-a-way.
Such wonderful treasures you find - love that blouse you snagged for yourself - and what lovely pieces Jon found for you!
Poor Things was utterly brilliant, I loved every bonkers minute of it! I haven't seen The Favourite, I must rectify that, I love Olivia Colman.
DeleteI'm glad I'm not alone in my cluttered and messy bookshelves. I love digging for book to read and happening on one I'd forgotten all about. There's a thing in Blogland for colour-coordinated shelves, I don't think that would ever work in this house, I don't think a day goes by when we don't slot another one on to one of the piles!
I can't wait to wear that orange top - not sure how it would look with full-on thermals underneath! xxx
I do love a good bookshelf or two. When I win the lottery I'm going to have a library room... and a blimmin big walled garden ☺
ReplyDeleteOh yes, a library sounds wonderful especially with a set of library ladders, I'm obsessed with those! xxx
Deletewhat a fabulous book collection, I have only about 10 on a wardrobe shelf - I do use them a lot but its certainly minimalist, I love books but only get them from the library - I really must look in the local Oxfam book shop which is right near the dentist where I am going today lol! I do of course have my country diary book that you gave me - pure treasure! The Hong Kong blouse you found is lovely, I used to get my suits made there in my merchant banking days. Fancy having something so many years and never enjoying it, definitely was the right thing to sell on Vinted and let you give it some outings :) Betty
ReplyDeleteAwww, I'm so glad you're still enjoying The Country Diary, Betty! I love a glossy coffee table book, our Cancer UK shop sells them for £1 each and I've found some beauties on art and travel. Good luck at the dentist and trawling Oxfam afterwards!
DeleteHow fancy having your clothes custom made in Hong Kong! I love finding bespoke pieces like that in charity shops! xxx
I have fond memories of jumble sales having not really experienced them until landing here in the uk. I loved the rummaging and coming up trumps! The last one I went to was some time ago and yes, full of crappage and plastic.... I seem to have a lot of books that I find difficult to pass on, so they too collect dust 😁
ReplyDeleteThey were a regular part of my life since I was a child and was dragged along with my Mum and Grandma. For many years we used to help out at a monthly one at a local methodist church - we used to go as punters but the lady who ran it asked if we'd helped out as she was struggling to find any volunteers under the age of 70 - my used to have such a laugh! xxx
DeleteThank you, Vix, for granting me a closer squint at that handsome leather bag! The workmanship, particularly around the blue stone, is as expert as I'd imagined. That tidy little clasp is a favorite design, so easy to open and close with one hand.
ReplyDeleteThree of those Billy bookcases are stacked two-deep in my study, offering a roost for my paper backs. (Aha! The Dennis Wheatley is spotted! I, too, shelve him next Agatha Christie --the odd Harlequin short stories and Death Comes As the End.) The hard-covers stand in state in the lounge bookshelves; the cookbooks have their own sturdy bookcase at the end of the kitchen -- easily grabbed by cook or kibitzers in the adjacent dining area.
My guests do browse the shelves, and if anyone wants to borrow a shelf-sitter, they'll find it tucked in their left-overs-for-lunch bag. It's that time of my life to find new owners for my treasures, especially since I'm still acquiring new* ones.
*I rarely buy new. An exception is my Christmas present to myself: The Oldest Book in the World.
My pleasure, Beth! It's such a pretty bag, I assume it was bought as a holiday souvenir, there was a Moroccan man selling some very similar in Tenerife last month, and would have been quite costly. I love those one handed fasteners, too - there's little more frustrating than trying to wrangle your reading glasses or purse out of your bag when you're clothing a pile of goodies in a charity shop!
DeleteI'm happy to hear that your house is full of overstuffed bookcases and each has a certain theme. I like the idea of passing on an admired book as a going home present to a friend, I'm always forcing mine on visitors, too.
Sometimes one has to bite the bullet and buy a new book. I hope your Xmas present is beautiful and brings you much joy. xxx
Amazing, i love your exqusite colorful House. Also the Photos in the Magazin are beautiful. The Monsoon dress looks great with the brown boots, fringes bag and the purple hat! Have a nice Day Vix
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Much love to you! xxx
DeleteThe last JS I went to was a church rummage sale - the volunteers outnumbered the bargain hunters - and the stock included many china cabinet and nanna declutters. I bought a seventies slow cooker (in groovy orange) and a beautiful painting of flowers in a fab frame. The lady who I bought it from had been given it as a donation from her Mum's neighbour - she asked that I'd look after it becaused it was much loved. I managed to get outside before I had a little weep over that. Haven't seen another jumble/rummage since.
ReplyDeleteVix - I need to know if you ever get hat hair? Flat hair was the bane of my life when I had a motorbike.lol. Our bookshelves are fairly civilised since we discovered WeBuyBooks and traded loads of redundant textbooks. Having said that, there are bookshelves/bookslants in pretty much every room here apart from the bathroom/lav. Bookcycle is awesome - our local one has closed down - but it was such a fabulous thing http://www.book-cycle.org
I love the photos of your home - now I have a smartphone (just like yours- thanks for the recommendation!) I shall have to join the Instagram kids and post some interior eye-candy lol (well, it might encourage me to get the hoover out more often!!)
It's me again (Elaine) x
DeleteHello, Elain! If you're going to share photos of your home I might have to revisit Instagram just so's I can see them!
DeleteI think we might have the same slow cooker. I used to have so much "nana" tat when I jumble sale-d regularly, a whole wall of Vernon Ward prints at one time! I love it when you get a little back story when you buy something although it makes you loathe to part with it ever again.
i'm not too bad with hat hair - a quick run through with Superdrug's Hyaluronic anti-frizz serum sorts out the static - but when I wear my sheepskin hats (or my swim cap) I get a delightful red crease on my forehead which always leaves Jon in stitches.
I'm off to look at Bookcycle....
The red crease look could be worse - as a pink-haired person I'd often look like I'd come fresh from some kind of brain surgery/scalp proceedure lol I'm going to have a go with Insta - now I have a more modern phone it works a treat (complete and utter bobbins on the desktop). Insta seems to want you to also have a Facebook account (been there - done that, got hacked and sundry feckwittage). We'll see ...
DeleteI bet IG works loads better with a phone, it used to take me an absolute age to upload stuff from the PC. xxx
DeleteI too enjoy a good ol' house peek Vix.. moi nosy!? Let's bring back jumble sales - it's what winters were made for. As a kid I got reluctantly dragged round them most weekends, now I miss them. I am a fan of a good pair of sturdy boots :) xXx
ReplyDeleteIts probably just as well there's been no jumbles for ages, the house used to be even more of a tip when we went to them regularly, I always felt sorry for chairs, coffee tables and standard lamps! xxx
DeleteThat tassled bag is very you I'm not surprised you bought it! Is it something about black cats? Benjie's fur used to go static and crackle in cold weather too, mind you she did used to glue herself to the radiator to the point of almost being too hot to touch. I will add to the lamenting for jumble sales I guess car booting took over.
ReplyDeleteLove your style whatever the weather but I love particularly your 'cold&sunny' outfits, maxi skirts, quilted jackets and bastard massive sheepskin hats! You Rock It!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely in love with all those pieces of tribal jewellery from Jon's box of delights! so many fab pieces!
Those gore-tex boots look really comfy and have a retro mountain shoes vibe that I like. And that chinese blouse is Amazing, even more when knowing something about its history (you saved it from an unlovingly existence!).
Always lovely to have a look at your home, your reads and your books'collection. I try to keep a 'reasonable' amount of books at home but it's difficult as we're both book worms and paper hoarders. Working on it!
