The Eyes Have it

With festival season almost upon us we've been shopping like crazy to get the Kinky Melon pitch stocked up with cool gear. I've not shared our finds since the days BC (before Crete) so here goes.....

Two pairs of sequinned TopShop hot pants, 1980s midi skirt, 1980s deadstock printed cotton mini skirt, 1980s Hawaiian shirt, 1960s Wetherall of Bond Street wool pencil skirt, 1980s tweed jacket, 1980s midi dress, 1960s Lavinia of Worcester satin shift dress, Masai dress, 1980s Mothercare cotton dress, Mint Velvet wool dress.

Floral belt with horse buckle (made in France), 1970s Hawkins of Northampton, by Royal Appointment to HM the Queen, suede walking boots (later bought out by Doc Martens), 1970s green cord smock, 1960s gents mac, 1990s Phool sundress, Marvel mini dress, Indian block print kaftan, 1970s polyester midi dress.

1950s brocade cocktail set, 1980s leisure shirt, 1980s handmade batwing cardi, 1960s lace and chiffon cocktail dress, Spanish mantilla, 1970s Mr Harry cashmere & wool overcoat, lobster brooch, 1970s green velvet blazer, 1950s silk day dress, 1980s C&A zip jacket

Barbour gilet, 1970s leather shoulder bag, Nepali shirt, Patrons of Peace duster, 1960s Tricel top, Monsoon tunic, Harris Tweed jacket, 1970s satin bomber, Adidas sweat top, Velvet dance costume (made in Canada).

John Frieda Brunette travel pack & Puma leggings (both for me), 1980s Citylites brocade waistcoat, 1980s Levi 501s, Pringle waxed jacket, Topshop *Mom* shorts, 1980s blingy belt, Nike crop top & Topshop sequinned bralet (both mine!), Topshop overdyed shorts, Closet, London sequinned velvet evening dress, a strapless pure silk maxi dress (no maker but the tag in the side seam says it was made by Gibo' Co, S.p.a - the production company who manufacture for John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Victor & Rolf,  Michael Kors and Gaultier - so rather a posh frock for two quid!), 1980s velvet waistcoat and a so-bad-its-good 1980s sequinned cocktail dress by Pagan, New York.

Lord Jon's done well with two vintage denim shirts (Levis and Wrangler), a Casio G-Shock watch (which I found on the 50p table in the Air Ambulance), a huge tattoo sourcebook, two more vintage bud vases for our collection and the 1979 hit, The Adventures of the Lost Crusader by Sarah Brightman and the Starship Troopers on 12" red vinyl.

The weather's been properly up and down. We walked down to the swimming baths on Monday morning in glorious sunshine but by late afternoon the central heating had clicked on. I wore an old favourite, a 1970s printed cotton Dollyrockers maxi dress, swapped with a trading friend at vintage fair in 2011, along with my apple green Lottas.

Monday was the day of my hospital appointment with the ophthalmic consultant who, after numerous tests, suspects that I have Glaucoma - not a huge surprise as both my Mum & Grandma had it. I've got to go back for yet more tests and then it'll probably a lifetime of eye drops. I didn't bother Googling failing a field test when Specsavers referred me to the hospital but now I have a possible diagnosis I visited the charity, Glaucoma UK's, website, discovering alcohol is fine but coffee should be drunk in moderation (I rarely drink more than one cup a day), airline travel is okay and I can continue to exercise but to be cautious with any activity that involves the head being lower than the heart for prolonged periods of time so headstands and the Downward Facing Dog are to be avoided. They also recommend taking a Gingko Biloba supplement which is also said to be good for arthritis so might help Lord Jon's knackered knees, too.

Tuesday brought torrential rain and unseasonably cool temperatures so I gave the Liebchen, Berlin boots bought last week their first outing, teamed with the embroidered cotton midi (Zara via eBay) which is rapidly becoming this summer's most-worn dress. The vintage hat was a charity shop purchase when we visited Tewskesbury a couple of months ago and, after spotting this supersized straw and leather basket in the Air Ambulance chazza, I stuffed the bag I was carrying inside it, and used it to carry my charity shop finds home.

You can tell that these boots originally retailed at £225 - they're absurdly comfy and a pleasure to wear.

After lunch Jon did a post office and supermarket run leaving me to mark sections of the lawn into quadrants and do the #Every Flower Counts 2022 count, which forms part of the No Mow May campaign. Our unmown lawn contains 30,500 native wildflowers from 7 different species with a diversity score of 32%.  Yay!

I spent an hour cutting down the spent bluebells and stuffing the garden waste bin to capacity ready for collection on Wednesday before rain and the mother of all hailstorms stopped play and continued for the rest of the afternoon. After tea we continued with Borgen and how excited am I? I've just discovered that series 4 starts on Netflix on Thursday 2nd June!

Rain was threatened for Wednesday so rather than mow the lawn and erect the trade tent as planned we went charity shopping instead, popping into Lidl on the way to see if there were any of their * Waste Not* £1.50 veg boxes left. We were in luck and, even better, the assistant told us to take two!

Box 1: Mushrooms, British Pak choi, English asparagus, raspberries, wild rocket, broccoli and spinach.
Box 2: Vine tomatoes, Little Gem lettuce, British rainbow tomatoes, kiwi fruit, fresh basil, mango, banana, honeydew melon, British leeks, mango, aubergine, oranges and more broccoli.

Although the weather wasn't looking too promising, it was the 1st of June, the first day of meteorological summer, and therefore I had to wear one of my summer dresses.

My friend Cheryl gave me this 1970s Sidgreene, London maxi dress last year. I wore it with my Diesel denim jacket, orange Lotta from Stockholm clogs and my ridiculous cheese plant and rhinestone earrings (originally Zara but bought from eBay)

I plaited my hair in readiness for our second swim of the week - the baths are closed on Thursday and Friday due to the long bank holiday weekend so we had to squeeze two sessions into three days.

Back at home I washed our swimming gear, along with the morning's finds, and risked pegging them out on the line. Although it was forecast to drop to 6°C there was no rain forecast.

For those of you asking about our cat visitors, here's Ollie. Mr Trousers still pops by to get off his tits on catmint.

Instagram w*nker time - a food photo! It's tonight's tea, a stir-fry using the mushrooms & pak choi from the Lidl box along with peppers and red onions, sweet chilli & garlic sauce and basmati rice. I shall endeavour to photograph all the dishes we create with our £3 stash of fresh fruit and veg - I demolished one of the kiwis when I got back from the baths.

It's Wednesday, so its rum and Great British Sewing Bee night. Apologies for being slow to reply to your comments, messages and visit your blogs - I'm trying to limit my online time and give my eyes a rest.

Cheers and see you soon!

  2. Sorry about your eye condition BUT catching this early makes so much difference. A friend of mine had a very early diagnosis nearly 20 years ago and her sight has hardly deteriorated at all since then.

But her eyelashes - holy moly - she looks like she's wearing super-sized lash extensions every day. Something to do with the drops stimulating the hair follicles?

  3. I'm sorry to hear about the glaucoma but as you say it's not surprising. At least it's a condition that can be managed successfully.

Such brilliant finds! My favourites were the floral horse's head belt and the 1950s cocktail outfit - fabulous. I loved all your outfits especially the lovely embroidered Zara dress and those fab boots. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one to turn on the central heating on Monday - and Tuesday too!

I must say our Lidl vegetable boxes are very mean in comparison to yours. Ours don't come with full packets; rather they seem to select the most undesirable specimens of fruit and veg and put them into the boxes...having said that I've never managed to get another one since I got one yonks ago!

Luckily our pool remains open for the BHs so I'll be able to swim tomorrow as per usual.

Julian is at Glastonbury this year - in the Poetry bit doing his 'Goblin Market' take on Christina Rossetti's poem of the same name.xxx

    1. Thanks, Vronni! That 1950s cocktail set got lots of love from the other customers when i walked around with it, such wonderful construction and fabulous fabric. I wonder where it's been for the last 70 years?
What a shame about the veg boxes down by you. Ours have been really impressive so far, it takes us ages to decide which one to buy, every one has completely different contents.
Fancy your pool being open for the Bank Holiday, ours was mad busy all week, Jon was getting cross with the people who hang around in the middle of the pool chatting.
Tell Julian that we'll be right next to the Bandstand behind the Pyramid Stage & in the field with the Tony Benn Tower from Monday 20th until Monday 27th if he's got time to explore. We'd love to see him again! xxx

  4. The weather has been really up and down lately. I wish it would stay warmer.
Love the embroidered Zara dress, and of course the Dollyrockers.
Sorry to hear about the glaucoma, but as it's been caught early, it can be managed. And no problems with flying, thank goodness.
You're well ahead with finds for the festies. Lots of very desirable pieces. Summer is going to be fun! 🙂 Xxx

  5. Happy June!
Your post-Crete vintage fashion and jewellery finds look awesome.
The 1970s printed Dollyrockers maxi-dress looks pretty (fun lobster brooch!).
and the 1970s Sidgreene London maxi-dress looks fab styled with the Diesel denim jacket.
It's good to read that you are taking good care of your health, eye-care included.
I too have given up on doing headstands.
Best wishes for both a happy rum and Great British Sewing Bee night,

  6. Oh bum to the glaucoma, Vix - the Glaucoma UK website looks very good and I'm sure the Eye Hospital will give you plenty of advice on self-care. Our local Eye Unit is a Centre of Excellence; they were brilliant, helpful and supportive at a scarey time when I was referred there. Rest your eyes and exercise your fab collection of sunglasses!

Lidl Too Good to Waste boxes are fab - always worth a look, but you have to be quick!

Ooooooh the lobster brooch!!!!!! LOVE IT! Squeeeeeeeeeeee.

    1. Thanks so much, Eileen! I was a bit worried about the eye thing. Our Black Country eye hospital was in Wolverhampton and they treated me during my bout of Iritis in 2001, it's now derelict. Walsall Manor seemed fine though, it ran to time and the consultant I saw was really cheeky and soon put me at ease.
A friend told me that Bono has Glaucoma and that's why he always wears sunglasses, I'm a bit of sunglass obsessive so it's the perfect excuse to buy more!
I'm so impressed with those boxes, I've even started cooking!
Who doesn't love a blingy lobster? (or maybe it's just us!) The last one went to Hairy Biker Dave's wife, she's as much as a magpie as we are! xxx

  7. In 1976, I bought a white mantilla and huge comb from El Cortes Ingles. The mantilla became my wedding veil and my daughter in law used it. My very sensible father talked me out of the comb/headpiece for my wedding. Still have it in a box, 'cause you just never know.

That straw bag looks like the ones that L'Occitane sell once or twice a year.

    Enjoy your long weekend.

  9. The glaucoma diagnosis sucks, Vix, and even though you might have been semi-expecting it, it's still a blow to be told you have it. Hugs to you, and don't worry about blogging or visiting or commenting. Take a rest. Have some rum!

Thank you for the festival clothing line-up! I love seeing all the cool things you find. Your outfits are fabulous - it's so comforting to see favourites showing up again. What a score on the veg packs! Our groceries are so ridiculously expensive right now, but we're much better off than others, so I'm not complaining!

Those veg packs are insanely good value, I can't believe they don't sell out as soon as the shop opens. xxx

  13. I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis Vix, but hoping that, given you haven't had any symptoms and have been very responsible in getting annual vision checks, that they have caught it really early and you will continue to keep it at bay. My Mom knows someone who has been using drops for years and years and as far as I'm aware, isn't really experiencing debilitating symptoms.

Good to see you have plenty of festival stock. That strapless silk sundress is gorgeous isn't it?

We are continuing with No Mow May, but I think I've missed the part about reading the results. I didn't sign up for anything, just didn't mow. Your results are amazing!

Sewing Bee was really enjoyable last night. I loved the Bowie inspired outfits. I did want to shout "Both!" at the woman who was deliberating over whether to use feathery trim on the cuffs or legs of her outfit.

You definitely did well at the chazzas stocking up for festival season. I can't believe you found another couple of vintage bud vases!
Your outfits are all to die for, although I do have a slight preference for the Dollyrockers maxi as you were wearing it last time we met. Can't believe it's less than a month now ... will email shortly to make arrangements! The Zara dress is gorgeous! 15. Bummer on the glaucoma but sound like you're in good hands and you're doing the sensible thing keeping away from the screens for a while. I went to Lidl on Tuesday to grab some 'Greek' stuff and asked about their £1.50 boxes but was told they are only available first thing in the morning and are snaffled up quickly. Your boxes look really fresh and generous. I paid £2 alone for raspberries the other day (Tesco!). Boy, oh boy did the Mothercare maternity dress bring back memories! I wore them throughout my pregnancies in the 80's with my thick, coloured tights just to yoosh them up a bit!

    1. Thanks, love! I'm so glad I go for yearly eye-tests so the deterioration can be held in check. It's a long wait for more tests so I shall do as much damage limitation as I can, reducing screen time and taking gingko until I get the confirmation from the hospital.
Those veg boxes are amazing. I don't go that early and there always seems to be a huge pile of them behind the counter. I wonder if my luck will continue?

You can still get the benefits of Downward dog by doing it against the wall to keeping your head level with your heart and stretching the legs.
I think headstands are overrated and prefer legs up the wall which has the benefits of giving the cirulcation system a rest while keeping head and heart level.
