It's been a long bank holiday weekend with a vast chunk of Britain celebrating 70 years of Liz being on the throne but there's been no jubilee street parties for us, we've been getting festival ready. The trade tent is up, the flooring is down, the rails are bolted together and we've been sifting through the stock in the Kinky shed, in preparation for a fortnight of mending, ironing, pricing, measuring and labelling. We'll be heading to Glastonbury three weeks tomorrow!!!
Doesn't it look drab? It isn't helped by the miserable weather, 11°C and non-stop rain since 10.30pm on Saturday night but hopefully, in a few week's time we'll dreamed up an idea to funk up the frontage and hopefully have an interior like this....
Then it'll be a matter of sorting out my festival wardrobe - the 1970s psych maxi skirt has since found a new home (miles too big) but the 1980s bustier & ridiculous sunglasses live to see another field.
Needless to say we've been absolutely knackered and it's been a struggle to keep our eyes open after we've showered and eaten. After finishing season 3 of Borgen we watched the excellent Bait, a Bafta award-winning film about the tensions arising between Cornish locals and tourists against a backdrop of gentrification, short-term lets and second-homes. Bait was shot on a secondhand Bolex camera using 16mm film and home-processed by director, Mark Jenkin.
We've been binge-watching BBC4's Scandi-noir, Beck over the last couple of nights, the ninth series based on the books featuring detective Martin Beck. Grannen, Martin's mysterious neighbour with the surgical collar, always has us in stitches.
As I'm sure you already know, I am a City & Guilds accredited chef & silver service waiter, a master sommelier plus have professional pâtissier and pastry chef qualifications. For many years I was a corporate hospitality manager in Birmingham city centre and one of the top earning women in my field, often featuring in trade magazines and addressing conventions and hated every minute. Cookery programmes bore the pants off me and I rarely cook at home but the contents of the Lidl £1.50 "Waste Not" boxes have been so good I've been inspired to get my pinny out and thought I'd share some of the dishes I've made from the contents.
Thursday's breakfast - oranges, banana and kiwi from the veg box along with black grapes and blueberries (already in the fridge) topped with Greek yoghurt and a spoonful of seeds & dried fruit.
Tea - Broccoli, fresh basil leaves and rainbow tomatoes (all from the veg box) mixed with some pimento-stuffed olives, tossed in sundried tomato pesto, topped with vegetarian Cheddar and oven-baked, served with lemon cous-cous and a glass of red courtesy of Jon's uncle Bill who spends half the year in France and the rest in Cyprus (or did until Brexit).
A Bank Holiday Pudding! Victoria rhubarb from the garden, English raspberries from the veg box with an oat crumble topping.
Friday's breakfast - oranges, honeydew melon, kiwi fruit and banana from the veg box, blueberries from the fridge.
Jacob's lunch - wild rocket, pak choi and spinach leaves from the veg box.
Friday's tea. Imam Bayaldi made with aubergines and rainbow tomatoes from the veg box, spring onions, garlic & mint from the garden and served with English asparagus, also from the box.
Saturday's breakfast. Shakshuka, made with vine tomatoes from the veg box and spring onions, parsley & mint from the garden. Served with wild rocket from the box.
Saturday's tea - Broccoli and leeks (from the veg box) in a Double Gloucester and English mustard sauce served with an oven baked tomato (from the box) stuffed with mushrooms & fresh basil (both from the box), shallots (from the garden) and sun-dried tomato tapenade. Jon discovered a few cans of G&T in the van, they're 18 months out of date but haven't killed me yet.
Sunday's breakfast - Richmond vegetarian sausages on salt & pepper bread with wholegrain mustard, and a few cherry tomatoes and mushrooms from the veg box.
Fingers crossed we snag another box this week....
In other news we've been visited by the strays, Ollie came for food, Mr Trousers came for fuss.
Since Thursday I've been make-up and jewellery free, my hair's been pinned up and I've worn my Nike crop-top and denim cut-offs on repeat - adding a sweat top and sunglasses depending on the weather.
It felt like a real treat to brush my hair and pull on a dress and head to the clearance charity shop for a rummage this morning. That's Philaphelpus (mock orange) I'm sniffing, it smells divine.
I'm wearing the Dahlia Dress from Seventies Soul. |
I was so excited to be out that it wouldn't have mattered if we'd returned empty-handed but of course, we didn't!
We returned with some Bally Italian suede boots (which would have been uber expensive), snake print hot pants, a vintage leather jacket with puffed sleeves, a 1970s chartreuse silky polo, Beyoncé's Ivy Park label joggers, a gingham cotton tie-front top, a Hidesign leather shoulder bag, metallic leggings, vintage Clarks' basket weave shoes and three books - The London Train by Tessa Hadley, Orkney by Amy Sackville and Spies by Michael Frayn.
Right....back to the ironing board. See you soon!
Ooh, I'm exhausted for you. I knew you would be a terrific cook, and what a fantastic fruit and veg haul. I need coffee, but now I'm hungry for a full on veggie lunch.
ReplyDeleteI seriously need to get into training for Glastonbury - work all day, party all night (or at least till the early hours!) I'm enjoying cooking so much at the moment, if I lived closer I'd offer to cook for you. xxx
DeleteThe one and only time I was in Lidl early enough to see the 'Waste Not' boxes they looked absolutely nothing like yours :-( Those you have scored are definitely inspiring, glad you are enjoying cooking at present.
ReplyDeleteLovely to have an update on Ollie and Mr T. They are both looking considerably happier and better fed than when they first started visiting.
It seems like the veg boxes are dramatically different from area to area. Our Lidl is very middle class, I think the posh clientele wouldn't be seen dead buying bargain boxes - all the more for us!
DeleteThe boys are looking good. Ollie came in the house this afternoon and ate his lunch in the hall - I don't think he'll ever be a house cat but it's very exciting! xxx
They'd be full of pies and crisps here in Middlesbrough. Although on second thoughts they'd be full of lovely veg as the standard diet here is pies and crisps. The veg is left on the shelf :-)
DeleteCherie - I think that's why we do so well, the standard diet in Walsall seems to be burgers and fried chicken. I don't think most folk would know what to do with asparagus or an aubergine! xxx
DeleteLovely meals created from the veg box. I'm going to see if I can snag one tomorrow - for some reason it's been difficult to get one the last couple of months. I quite like the challenge of what to do with the different fruit and veg. I've got to find my cooking mojo now we're back from holiday. We had BBQs every night we were away which is husband's domain.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in snaffling a Lidl box! I'm loving the challenge of coming up with a use for everything in the box, it's like Ready, Steady, Cook! I hope you had a lovely holiday! xxx
DeleteManaged to get a box this morning - not as much variety in it as yours but had two massive packs of strawberries in it so worth it just for that.
DeleteI'm glad you got a box - two punnets of strawberries alone are a bargain at £1.50! xxx
DeleteFlippin eck Mary Berry.... You made some scrummy meals from the contents of that box Vix. Here's hoping Glasto is mud free for you. x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cherie! I'm praying that the weather today isn't an indication of what Glastonbury's going to be like! xxx
DeleteI'm seeing somebody wearing the snake print hotpants and that red check top.And looking amazing!
ReplyDeletePattern mixing at it's finest! xxx
DeleteI'm exhausted just reading this! I know all your efforts will pay off and soon be a distant memory in the blissful headiness of Glastonbury. Some mouth watering dishes there Vix and it's always good to catch a glimpse of Olly and Mr Trousers. That Dahlia dress is divine! xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Claire! I'm hoping that the swimming & workouts will increase our stamina, I'm out of practice with all-day drinking and staying up late! xxx
DeleteI'm sure you'll soon come up with lots of ideas to funk up your festival trade tent and that it will look at least as inviting as it did before you know what. You'll be back in the saddle before you know it and be able to tell me all about it in person after Glastonbury!
ReplyDeleteBait sounds like my cup of tea. Let's see if I can find a way to watch it here.
It's lovely to see Oliver and Mr. Trousers and your Dahlia dress is an absolute stunner. Don't tell me you're not keeping the snake print hot pants, though :-)
Oh, and last but not least: all your delectable dishes have me salivating! We were still full of this afternoon's birthday cake, but seeing these have definitely made me hungry! xxx
I'm sure something will strike us like a lightning bolt and our shopfront will lure punters and celebs in from all over Glastonbury. We'll keep staring at it and something will happen!
DeleteBait is well worth a watch, gritty and thought-provoking, the kind of film Brits excel at.
I was hoping the snake shorts would fit but they're just too big - I'm sure a fabulous festival goer will love them! xxx
All the meals look delicious and made from such simple ingredients, I am super impressed by your previous career although can understand why you would want to opt out of such high pressure work environment and lead the fun lifestyle you have created for yourself. Betty
ReplyDeleteThanks, Betty! I love the challenge of creating dishes with the contents of the veg box and whatever I can find in the cupboard. Oh yes, my previous life was exhausting, I still dream that I'm trapped in that job years later! xxx
Deletei´m sure your fest tent will look fabulous at glasto!
ReplyDelete....and the folks will buy you out. can´t wait to see what you will be wearing......
dahlia dress looks wonderful - the cotton is so crisp and the colours lovely. sweet shots of the stray cats - mr. trousers is so wonderful furry........
happy prepping! xxxx
I do hope so, Beate. Jon's got a plan in his head, let's hope it works out in reality! After 3 years away I'm going all out in my festival outfits - sparkle all the way!
DeleteThat dahlia dress is so lovely to wear, really good quality cotton, pockets and a perfectly aligned print.
Mr Trousers is so fluffy, he could do with a haircut to get rid of some of those lugs! xxx
in spring we brush lisbeth daily - otherwise she would look like mr.trousers :-D
Deletexx
He's got dreadlocks! xxx
DeleteYour meals look delicious. You found cool stuff in the shops too. Good luck getting festival ready.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love the challenge of using up the contents of that veg box! xxx
DeleteAh, delighted to see my favorite Hermann's tortoise enjoying his gourmet veg in his private dining room. Munch on, Jacob! * And thank you, Chef, for the inspiring ideas for summer breakfasts and lunches al fresco. A nearby Aldi offers decent discounted produce, so fruit for yoghurt breakfasts and tomatoes for cheesy concoctions now top my list.
ReplyDeleteMust confess I'm curious to see if recent trips to sunny isles influence Kinky Tent decor at Glaso this year (which I recall can be er, damp).
He's lost his appetite with it being so cold, poor lad. He's like me and thrives on heat and sunshine.
DeleteAldi has just opened in Walsall, we had one 20 years ago but it never caught on, I haven't been inside yet but they've got some beautiful jasmine climbers outside for £8, I'm tempted!
Jon has a plan for the outside of the Kinky Tent - watch this space, Beth! xxx
The red gingham top, remind of a red pull over blouse I made in High School home economics .Coffee is on and stay safe
ReplyDeleteI love gingham! I'm planning to wear the top over a dress - there's something so fresh and summery about it, isn't there? xxx
DeleteYour meals look super! I'm back to school today and feeling sick at the prospect- I was actually having a sort of panic breathing as I tried to sleep last night and tossed and turned all night. Didn't get all the work done that I need to do, deadlines looming plus I've got rehearsals tonight and tomorrow till late- could definitely do with Vix cooking to get me through this week.
ReplyDeleteI like the Dahlia dress- it looks comfy. Am actually wearing a kaftan to school today as we have to dress up in clothing of a decade of the Queen's reign though it's pissing it down with rain and I just missed 2 trains so I'm not enjoying it!
I'm sure you will both make the tent look superb!
Xx
Oh Kezzie, I feel for you and hope you're first day back turns out okay and the stresses vanish. It doesn't help that you've missed two trains.
DeleteI like the idea of dressing up in clothing worn during the different eras of the Queen's reign and what could be more comfy and easier to wear than a kaftan? Princess Margaret always looked fabulous in them!
If you didn't live at the other end of the country I'd happily cook your tea.xxx
Some lovely meals made from the contents of your box ... and NO I did not know about all your credentials, no wonder all your meals look inspirational!!
ReplyDeleteI hope Glastonbury is wonderful for you this year, it's been a long time coming this return to festival 'normality' hasn't it.
Thanks so much, Sue! I hated my chosen career path, I'd probably have loved it if I'd been a chef but the responsibility for a budget of almost a million quid and being responsible for a big team was so stressful I still have nightmares today!
DeleteI'm so excited about Glastonbury, I couldn't watch the reruns when they were TV last year, I missed it so much it made me cry! xxx
You have certainly made good use of your veggie box! Some delicious looking meals there. I see you like cheese; as do I. My favourite meal is bread and cheese so I'm easy to feed. I also like you hate cookery programmes. Unfortunately, OH loves them and I have to sometimes suffer them although I'm usually reading...I'm so glad you were able to get out of a profession you hated!
ReplyDeleteI loved the Dahlia dress; it looks lovely on you. Such a shame about the psychedelic maxi; that was also wonderful. Great finds as always. I remember Bally shoes well but was never able to afford them.
Good to see the strays again.
I passed your message onto Julian and he said he will pay you a visit...
xxx
Hello Vronni! I do love a bit of cheese, I do ration myself though or I'd probably start resembling a piece of Stilton! Food programmes are so tedious, I just can't get the appeal especially Bake Off, I loathe cakes at the best of times!
DeleteI'm mad about the Dahlia dress. I loved the skirt but it was forever twizzling around so it had to go, the girl who bought it was a circus performer so it went to a good home.
It will be lovely to see Julian! xxxx
Those Lidl £1.50 boxes are fabulous, aren't they? They really inspire me to be creative with whatever I get when I buy one - wish other supermarkets would do something like this.
ReplyDeleteI can also highly recommend the Olio app. Local 'Food Waste Heroes' collect on-date food from supermarkets (mainly Tesco) and offer it for free to anyone who wants it. I've had some wonderful items from there. It's really worth checking it out. Your meals look wonderful, by the way.
Hello, Elizabeth! They're wonderful, aren't they? Each one seems completely different and it takes me an age to decide which one to go for.
DeleteI've not heard of Olia. That sounds amazing. I don't do mobile phones so shall get Jon to have a look. Thanks so much! xxx
Thanks for showing the great meals you have made from your Waste Not boxes. Cooking is not one of my strong suits so I am always interested to see healthy and tasty meals that others make. My friend and I saw "Everything Everywhere All At Once" last night and we thoroughly enjoyed it - we agreed that it was one of the most bizarre films we had ever seen but the cast is wonderful and the visuals are amazing.
ReplyDeleteDoes the red gingham tie front top fit you? It screams "Vix!" to me.
I saw a photo of the thousands of unmasked people thronging at the palace for the jubilee and was just hoping it didn't turn into a Covid superspreader event.
Wasn't it a strangely compelling film? neither of us had ever seen anything like it and couldn't stop talking about it for days afterwards.
DeleteThe red gingham does fit - I was hoping it would, I've got an outfit already planned. I just need some sunshine!
Covid seems to have vanished from the news over here altogether. I hope it doesn't rear its ugly head again come Autumn! xxx
All your meals look delicious Vix. My.Mum left me with a bog bag of leftover veg when she went to Italy last week so have been doing something similar. Today it's using the sage leaves up with roasted butternut squash mushrooms and roasted gnocchi. The basil has gone in with the lemon and salt dressing. Arilx
ReplyDeleteYum! I love the sound of your butternut squash dish! Isn't it exciting finding ways of using everything up? xxx
DeleteLove the look of everything cuisine-related and in particular the Broccoli and Leek dish. Any chance of a hint at the recipe, pretty please? I here Diana Ross is headlining on the 'Legends' stage at Glasto, although it would be a dream to see Macca.? Final of 'Scotland's Home of the Year' tonight, if you haven't already collapsed in a heap by then!
ReplyDeleteHello! We usually work till around 10pm at Glasto but our stall backs on to the Pyramid Stage and we can see the screen from the shop so have a birds eye view of the acts. There's loads of impromptu gigs before the gates open to the public on the Wednesday (we get there on Monday) so I'm hoping Jarvis plays somewhere where I can get close and personal!
DeleteMy broccoli and leek dish isn't an exact science but this gives you the basic gist (I hope)
1. Pre-cook a head of broccoli cut into florets, strain and leave to cool.
2. Saute two sliced leeks in 4oz of butter until soft.
3. Add a couple of tablespoons of plain flour and stir until all the liquid is absorbed.
4. Gradually add milk (around 1/2 pint) and bring to a simmer.
5. Remove from heat, stir in a teaspoon of English mustard, some black pepper, the broccoli florets and around 4oz of cheese. Decant into an ovenproof dish.
6. Sprinkle on another 2oz of cheese and bake at 180°C (or grill) until the cheese bubbles.
I didn't realise it was the final of #SCOTY tonight!! Thank you! Tom's croft house, New Tolsta, Stornaway reduced me to tears, it's the most beautiful house I've ever seen - I hope he wins! xxx
Thank you! :-) (great result on SHOTY!)
DeleteMy pleasure! What a result, I'm so happy! xxx
DeleteMock orange is one of my favourite blooming bushes - we had one at the house I grew up in and there's one near our condo that I always enjoy. Good luck on getting the Kinky Tent ready, Vix! Woo, Glastonbury awaits! So exciting!
ReplyDeleteYour meals look amazing. I'm so hungry!
They smell amazing! I've no idea where this one came from, we didn't plant it!
DeleteI still can't believe Glastonbury is happening - I love the prep! xxx
I expect you can't wait to get back to Glastonbury. Wishing you a very successful return to your festival season. X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jules - I can't! xxx
DeleteI really want to go to Glastonbury one day but maybe not during festival time! I like things a bit less busy!
ReplyDeleteI am glad your cat friends are visiting!
I've never been into the town! Glastonbury Festival is incredible, it is crazy busy (250,000 people) but the atmosphere is electric, I love it but will need a week to recover! xxx
DeleteI hope all of your preparations are going smoothly Vix x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Flis! They are getting there! xx
DeleteThis sounds so exciting! I miss my friends so much. I am happy to see you living your life to the fullest. Stay blessed.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to see your friends soon, Ishpal! xxx
