I'd Have Got Less For Murder....

Over the last few days we've been subjected to Arctic blasts, heavy frosts and snow. My poor daffodils have taken a right battering so, despite not being a fan of cut flowers, I've rescued the squashed ones and stuck them in one the Glug Jugs I inherited from Grandma.

Rather than stick the heating on, on Thursday Jon and I took ourselves off to the matinee screening of Phantom of the Open, based on the true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a crane driver (and dreamer) from Barrow-in-Furness who took part in the British Open despite never having played a game of golf in his life.

It stars one of our favourite actors, the wonderful Mark Rylance - check him out in Bridge of Spies, so good I've watched it four times! Don't be put off by the golfing theme, its a wonderfully quirky and life-affirming film, at which we Brits excel. The 1970s costumes, especially the knitwear, are fabulous.

We also watched Fish Tank on Netflix, a stupendously well-acted film which, if like us you're a fan of Ken Loach, you'll love.

We saw The Lost Daughter weeks ago (also on Netflix) but in the excitement of visiting Alicante I neglected to mention it on my blog. Olivia Colman plays a woman who takes a solo trip to Greece but becomes fixated by a young mother and her daughter she sees on the beach. I loved how the film tackled the fact that not all women are naturally disposed towards motherhood (I'm certainly not!) It's an incredibly powerful watch and Olivia Colman is magnificent.

Our swimming comeback continues, we've clocked up 50 lengths this week.

Festival season is really happening! Cornbury confirmed our pitch this week and we had to pay the invoice for Glastonbury earlier today. It's the perfect excuse to carry on charity shopping (not that we need one).

What did we find? A rather lovely handmade ethnic tapestry jacket, a 1980s satin bomber jacket with Keep it Country emblazoned across the back, a copper bangle, a handmade 1970s cotton blouse, a 1990s crinkle sun dress, a 1980s wool midi skirt in a William Morris print, a 1930s fur cape (we seldom touch fur but I have a regular who has requested one and, with any fur we sell, all the proceeds will go to an animal charity), a 1980s Alfred Nippon "Executive Dress" (whatever that is), a 1970s hankerchief sleeve scarf print midi dress by the British boutique label, Shubette, a 1960s quilted dressing gown (but would make a fantastic coat) and a customised army jacket - perfect for a muddy festival!

Labels? Most of the time we couldn't give a toss about them, until we find them in charity shops!
Marc for Marc Jacobs cotton dress with pockets (£405), Daniel suede espadrilles, handmade in Spain (£89), Keith Haring sweatshirt (?), Katherine Hamnett organic cotton tartan shirt (£160), Play by Comme des Garcons applique tee shirt (£69), Adidas Campus trainers (£75), Fred Perry wide leg track bottoms (£90), Co-presenter of The Great British Sewing Bee Patrick Grant's Community Clothing Scottish-made merino wool cardi (£79) and some top quality British-made suede winklepickers by alternative label Underground (£178) - that's over a thousand quids worth of gear - if we'd been daft enough to buy it new!

Friday 1st April was our Never Had A Wedding anniversary, marking thirty years of unwedded bliss. That was us back in the early 1990s back in the days of the serial killer fringe and pre-digital camera.

I celebrated with my first haircut in almost a year (not even a trim at home) and had a whopping half an inch lopped off the ends - ditching the dryer, washing my hair once a week (and often less) and deep conditioning treatments have worked wonders. I went to a hairdressing academy in the town centre and my cut, blow dry and tousled waves by a sweet female apprentice cost half the price of the salon I normally visit.

It's the third time I've worn this Nekane NKN dress but the first time it's appeared on my blog. According to the label the dress is: an artisan garment with hand made embroidery and applications, designed with love in Barcelona (where my virtual friend Diana lives) and made in Spain. It appeared as one of those pesky pop-up ads and I loved it at first sight (damned algorithms!) but at £185, I couldn't justify the price so looked on eBay and found it in my size, new with the tags still attached for a sixth of the retail price. I clicked the Buy It Now button faster than I've ever done in my life.

The tribal necklace was from a car boot sale about ten years ago, the olive green velvet boots and tasselled earrings (still carded) were charity shop finds as were the silver planished bangles.

Jon's wearing his Gabicci wool cardi, Levi 510s and some rather snazzy Jones the Bootmaker suede boots snaffled from a charity shop last year. Apparently suede footwear is a "micro-trend" this year, not that it makes much difference to us, we never stopped wearing it!

Are we all dressed up with nowhere to go? No! We celebrated our anniversary with a slap-up dinner at Kouzina, Walsall's Greek Cypriot restaurant (there's also a branch in Birmingham's posh Selfridges store).

I'm glad we booked, we had the last table. In addition to the other diners, the two big tables were reserved for a surprise 70th birthday - luckily for us the party arrived just as we'd ordered - and there was only two waiting staff (one of those was also the chef).

It was just one beer as Jon drove there - we didn't fancy a three and a half mile walk in a hailstorm!

We ordered Greek Platters for one (and one with a very big appetite by the size of the tray!) I chose falafel and haloumi served with tzatziki and tirokafteri dips, Athenian flat bread, minted coleslaw, Greek salad and skin-on fries.

Jon chose the pork souvlaki, Greek kefte (beef & lamb) and the houmous and tahini dips.

I had Mythos and Jon had Keo, a Cypriate beer that isn't quite as strong as mine (the advantages of me not being a driver!)

Thirty years? I'd have got less for murder....

  1. Happy anniversary - did not realise that you and Lord Jon met the same time as Himself and I . . . and the suggestion that "I'd be out by now" if I had done away with him in the early years has been made a couple of times 😛 But surely, we are all far too young to have been coupled-up for this many decades??

Well done on the chazza haul, that tapestry jacket is quite lovely and congrats on having two Festivals confirmed.

Off to light the woodburner 🥶 🥶

That tapestry jacket is gorgeous - I do not need another jacket and shall not try it on!
How cold is it? I'm in thermals, Nepali socks, a kaftan and an Aran cardi! xxx

  3. It's amazing how quickly the years pass, but I think we are all getting better. You and Jon sure are. It'll be 35 years married in October, but we've hit the 35 year mark together last year in March. So weird question? Are take home boxes a thing? All that delicious food would make a killer lunch the next day. I always overeat if I don't intentionally plan for part of my meal to come home. Sorry you got another blast of the arctic after donning a bikini last week.

  4. Ohhhhh ... Patrick Grant's Community Clothing isn't an arsey fashion line, Vix - it's really thoughtful and ethical - wish we could shop there more often (special treat time only).

"... as a business we work on the premise that people and the planet, not shareholders, should come first, which feels radically different to most of today’s fashion industry. We believe that everyone deserves a great job that they enjoy and can feel proud of, and that the clothes we wear should not harm the earth. To make what we do affordable to most people we created a radically different business model, one in which the growers and makers take the majority of the money, not the brand and its owners. And every decision we take as a business is geared towards creating the maximum value, both economic and social, for the communities in which our clothes are made." Top man, top biz! https://communityclothing.co.uk

Congrats on your loved-up pseudo-versary!!!! Kouzina looks fab - we need that warm sunny weather back to go with it asap - I could see my breath in the kitchen this morning.

Fantastic swag - more love for the tapestry jacket lol

    1. Hello Eliane! I know - it's a lovely brand with great ethics, I've never bought anything from them but Alyson from That's Not My Age often gives it a shout-out. Jon picked it up as he was attracted to the CC label which we're only used to seeing in WWII era clothing.
-4°C this morning! Normally I'd be fine with that but those glorious few days have made me very reluctant to go back to thermals!
I haven't tried on that jacket - yet!! xxx

    2. I was sure you'd know - but I thought others might find it of interest! The mister bought denim from them - they do run out of stock quickly but the quality is bob-on and it is fab to support such a great set-up.

I'm sat in my workroom surrounded by summer stuff - it needs to be sorted so I can get the paints out lol

I think a lot of 'designer' swag comes courtesy of TKMaxx Gold Label clearance - you read of so many high-end labels who would rather rag stock before they'd discount it. How exclusive.

    3. Your lionks are always most appreciated, Elaine! remember that snazzy velvet blazer I had on ebay? It was bought by a proud mum with a working class, comprehensive school educated son who was doing his Masters at Cambridge, she sent me a photo of him in it, I was so happy it had gone to such a cool lad!
That's an incentive to get your wardrobe sorted if ever there was one - no painting till you've shifted the Summer gear.
The main TX Maxx distribution centre is in Walsall so that explains a lot. The store shut down years ago! xxx

My eldest, handsome, intelligent, funny, caring, hard-working son turns 40 (actually, as I write this, he would have been 20 minutes old 40 years-ago, it was like a day's work, they induced me at 9am and they pulled him out by the scruff of his neck and some very large forceps over 9 hours later - no break for lunch!). Trying only to have the heating on for an hour at night to take the chill off but it's grim, isn't it??Mark Rylance was also the voice of 'Bing', a bunny rabbit on the CBeebies programme!Have a good evening. xxx

  12. Happy non-anniversary! and well done on the swimming, I go three times a week and it's surprising how fast you build up those lengths, I used to watch the childrens lesson by lurking in the next lane and then copying them when they all got out so I learned butterfly and backstroke that way lol! I might treat myself to a few lessons later this year to improve. I love that NKN dress, it's one of the lovliest you have - it has such a nice cut and pattern or detail at the back is seldom seen except on garments of quality. Your hair looks great - using training nights or academies is the way to go, well supervised, same products and you are helping people get the practice they need (I did hairdressing but didn't finish as couldn't get enough models back in the day). Your night out looked really authentic, thank goodness you got served before that party crowd! I am going to check out those Netflix films, we have been getting bored with what's on telly thanks for recommendations. Betty x

I'm thinking about taking a few lessons, too - I'd love to be able to have the confidence to jump into deep water. Like you, I was listening to a dad teaching his children to swim on Friday morning and was very tempted to ask if I could join in!
The training academy was brilliant, I loved that the trainee concentrated on cutting my hair rather than engaging in idle chit-chat. It was strange having to stand up for the cut but I suppose it guaranteed that it was completely level!
I hope you enjoy the films! xxx

  16. So much to comment on here - first of all, happy non-anniversary! 30 years of being happily unmarried is definitely something to celebrate. You always find the best cards for each other.Your greek dinners look delicious, and your dress is lovely. I'm also in love with Jon's shoes!
I watched Lost Daughter, and thought Olivia Coleman's performance was excellent but was even more taken with the actress who played the younger version of her character. It did tackle a very difficult subject, and as another woman who had no desire to have children I appreciated it.
You found some excellent thrift scores - I would have grabbed the Keith Haring sweatshirt as I'm a fan of his art. I have a Comme des Garcons "Play" t-shirt with a large red heart on the front that I found at a thrift store - I would never pay the ridiculous retail price for one. I also have one of the Albert Nipon "Executive Dresses" in red and black in my Etsy shop. They were intended for the working woman in the 80's who didn't want to wear a suit.

Jessie Buckley is a wonderful actress. Not sure if you saw the Tom Hardy series Taboo but she was fantastic in that - if you haven't seen it it's on Netflix, Steampunk-y styling and very dark and unsettling!
I hadn't got round to googling Albert Nippon so thanks for that! Wearing a suit was one of the besty things about working in the 1980s! xxx

Your hair looks in great condition too. I have naturally Very curly hair and have just been chopping it myself now fir the past 2 years and a bit, slithering lots of conditioner on it and stimulating the scalp. I was very impressed with the trainees at the hair academy, it was wonderful watching a lady having her afro blow-dried straight - my Afro-caribbean and curly-haired friends used to have to go to Birmingham to get their hair done, it's great that colleges are now training students to style all types of hair, not just poker straight like mine! xxx
