It was so dark on Monday morning when Stephen woke me demanding breakfast that I had to double-check the alarm clock, thinking it was at least a couple of hours earlier. I did my Wii Fit workout, put away yesterday's laundry, wrapped my weekend sales & snaffled an amazing dress on eBay. After breakfast, Jon went round to Tony's via the post office whilst I started on my to-do list outside.
After admiring the petunias that had flowered overnight - they remind me of circus tents - I positioned cracked pieces of pot around my planting in a bid to keep the evil slugs & snails at bay. The bindweed was starting to spring up beneath the laurel so I covered the area with cardboard the bench was delivered in last week, dampened it down and added a layer of mulch and carried on with turning over the soil outside the gates.
Despite the forecast for torrential rain, the morning stayed mostly dry and was deliciously warm when the sun broke through the clouds. I'd just popped inside for a glass of water when Jon returned and, after a break for lunch, he took over the digging whilst I bagged up the roots we'd uncovered. I had to laugh, several people walked past and congratulated Jon on all his hard work, I'd done half of it! After raking the surface, Jon dug in some fertiliser ready for sowing grass seed later in the week.
We painted the posts for the kid/dog barrier (Silver Birch wasn't our first choice but will hopefully look good surrounded by lush greenery) then pottered around for a bit until the rain stopped play and we had to scuttle indoors. I had an early bath and read my book whilst Jon prepared tea.
Later we watched the rest of the series of Floodland. What next? We'll have to trawl Walter Presents and the i-player for more dark and dismal European dramas.
After a few hours of wandering, we were absolutely ravenous and devoured our sandwiches back in the van. The rain, which we'd managed to avoid all day, fell like stair rods on the journey home but had dried up by the time we'd reached Walsall.
The perfect end to a perfect day! The dress (another by Dilli Grey) I'd bought from eBay before 7am yesterday morning was waiting for me and it was every bit as amazing in real life as I'd hoped.
Tea will be halloumi with roasted veg and a cheeky glass of wine.
See you soon!
Oh how I love that photo of the greenhouse thingy next to the auricula display. If ever we should inherit any money I want a house with one of those tacked on the side. And those gorgeous brick cold frames made me sigh... Oh if only.....
ReplyDeleteIsn't it beautiful? I'd absolutely love something like that in our graden, too - I'd be in there all the time. I'd probably install a bar! xxx
DeleteI'd come and lean on your bar and drink cocktails.
DeleteHow gorgeous. We are edging winter and so cold today. I woke depressed so watched your blog before eating breakfast. I’ve always been intrigued by Calke Abbey. I had a library book out about 40 years ago that was mainly photos of the tnside. I’m so glad it was left as is. Had no idea the gardens so gorgeous. I have a real thing for Auriculas. They go straight to my heart.must be from a previous life. Your frontage will be amazing. Looking great already. I hope people respect it.. also love your bench. Stephen knows what buttons to push 😂. You do work hard. I envy you your youth and Jon to join in with you. Seeing you both makes my heart ache for my late sweetheart. Thank you for such a lovely viewing.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs to you, Sally. I'm glad my blog made you feel a little brighter. The gloom of winter is always hard to cope with at the best of times. I don't know much about Auriculas but loved how cheerful they looked and the huge variety of colour. I think I may have to try a few next year. xxx
DeleteAnother wonderful visit. Thank you for always taking us along. I love the photo of you blending in with the landscape. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Martha! x
DeleteI'm always so inspired by your post, and your beautiful wardrobe. Thanks for all the flora and garden walks.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Holly! xxx
DeleteOooh, the Dili Grey is beautiful! And a matching bag! I also love what you wore to Caulke abbey. Ahhh, I love an Orangery! So beautiful!xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kezzie! I was stunned when I spotted that new Dilli Grey dress on ebay, I was lusting after it a couple of weeks ago on their website. xxx
DeleteBig chuckles - yes you do blend in well with these olde homes, gardens, estates, and such. The photos of you there look timeless.
ReplyDeleteVintage dresses - my version of camo! xxx
DeleteI've been having another catch-up and have thoroughly enjoyed my 'visit' with you to Calke. It looks such a beautiful property both inside and out, and I'm now convinced the NT should employ you both as photographers and models for next year's handbook.
ReplyDeleteI'm also thrilled to discover I am unwittingly joining in with no mow May :)
Thanks so much, Jules! one of my friends submitted a photo of her visit to the NT property and it ended up in the brochure! maybe I should do the same!
DeleteNo Mow May made us feel a lot better about our knee high lawn! xxx
looking gorgeous - madame bluebell!
ReplyDeleteand lord jon about making a poem in the apple orchard......
wonderful gardens, very close to nature - and we would have loved too the house only being preserved.
chapeau to you for the hard work digging over the patch at the gate!! i know how hard this is. curious to see the barrier that jon is planning...
the newest dress looks lovely - fantastic colour and complete with a bag!
xxxxx
I might change my name to Madame Bluebell, I like it! Lord Jon does look rather pensive alone in the orchard, he was starving and wondering when I'd let him go back to the van and eat his sandwiches!
DeleteCalke Abbey is wonderful, I know you'd love it, too. xxx
The orangery would have me loitering for hours! I love that they have left the rooms exactly as found - so much more interesting and my kind of place. Your Dilli Grey's a stunner, what lucky find - absolutely beautiful, well spotted! You match the bluebells beautifully :) Looking forwward to seeing how you finish the front bit and keep those dogs at bay :)
ReplyDeleteI think they roped it off to stip me moving in. We spent ages in that orangery last year, it's the most perfect thing I've ever seen!
DeleteI couldn't believe my eyes when that Dilli Grey dress popped up, it's only just gone online and it's £149. The labels are still attached. I love eBay!
I can't wait to get the front bit of the garden done. I shall be out there in my bus nutter mac later cracking on with it if I can! xxx
Oh, that property looks so soothing and calm in its decay. I love that they preserved the rooms as is instead of restoring them or cleaning them up, and No Mow May sounds like a very sensible thing to do. I'm excited about your front plot (trust the man to get all the credit for it!). Your petunias do look like circus tents!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing your new pink dress on you, Vix! How sweet that it came with a matching bag!
Soothing and calm, you're not wrong there. I could feel my shoulders relax and my breathing slow down as soon as I set foot in Calke Abbey, I love it!
DeleteI'm desperate to get that grass seed sown. Tomorrow's the big day, weather permitting!
I can't wait to go out in that pink dress, I did think of wearing it today but I think it deserves a grand National Trust house rather than charity shopping in the rain! xxx
I love that home the unstatley home. That would be my home! If I had a home like that, those gardens were awesome. I might visit one if I get chance as there is a couple nearby. We are free from the covid hotel as from tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOur electric car sorry leaf awaits us. I will miss it as it has given me chance to collect my thoughts and what I want to say to people. It’s gonna be a tough 3 weeks.
That Dili grey dress is a stunner!
Trust Jon to take all the glory Paul is just like that!! Bleedin men lol. Take care and keep love and hugs
Isn't it fabulous? I love how it's been left in its original state rather than being restored and made all pristine and boring. Crumbling plaster and peeling paint rock my world!
DeleteA electric car! Jon really fancies having a go in one. We got an electric taxi back from the airport a couple of years ago and it was so quiet after Gilbert and his rattling!
Enjoy your freedom! xxx
wow, so lovely photos, such a difference the sunshine makes!, the garden and orchards look so lush and colourful, and I love an Orangerie!. I'd enjoy the decadent atmosphere of the building too, this is so magnificent!
ReplyDeleteLove to see your photos matching the flowers!, it's becoming a bit of a habit actually!. Looking gorgeous in these blue shades and lovely hat!
And the new dress looks really amazing, such a fantastic colour and matchy bag!.
besos
The sunshine makes all the difference! we were so lucky with the weather, no rain the whole time we were there!
DeleteThe artistocracy really knew how to spend their money back in the day, didn't they? The orangery is just gorgeous, I could sit in there for hours with a good book and a bottle of beer!
I didn't know the dress came with a matchy bag, what a lovely freebie! xxx
These gardens are wonderful. I love.your blue.styling. You look amazing. The dress is fabulous and I like the hat.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ivana! Lots of people stopped me to say how much they liked my hat, I don't wear that one as much as my others, maybe I ought to! xxx
DeleteWhat wonderful photos of Calke Abbey, almost as good as if I was there myself. Trust my back to go just as lockdown restrictions ease, I am itching to be out and about and able to do things again. Even sitting at the computer for longer than half an hour is painful :-)
ReplyDeleteThat dress and it's matching bag is a glorious colour, oh and I know what you mean about doing a good proportion of the work and then a certain someone else getting all the positive remarks about hard work!!
I meant to add, have you watched 'In Her Eyes', well worth a watch I binged it over two nights and LOVED the ending.
DeleteI'm so sorry about your back, Sue. Hope you feel better soon.
DeleteCalke Abbey is breathtaking, a very bold move by the NT to keep it as it was when it was gifted to them and its paid off, I think it's one of their most popular properties.
When I was a boss most clients would always speak to my male assistant assuming he was the manager, it used to drive us both mad!
I've just googled In Her Eyes and it look right up my street.xxx
I always misread Calke Abbey as Cake Abbey ;) That orangery really is stunning, with the light filtering through the domed skylight so it looks like a Barbara Hepworth sculpture on the wall. Also, I can spot a rather fine Geranium Maderense in there(purple flowers, crazy stems, from Madiera) - a plant I've been un-sucessfully trying to grow for years. I want to run through that daffodil lawn on a windy day! Lulu xXx
ReplyDeleteWe call it Cake Abbey, too!
DeleteIsn't the light absolutely stunning? I'd be more than happy to live in that orangery!
Yes, the sign said that geranium was from Madeira, makes me want to fly over and snaffle a few seeds! xxx
Love red brick walls and green doors. If you can get it, you might like to watch 'Scotland's Home of the Year 2021' tonight. There is a house being featured which has always been my 'dream home' (I live not far away from it) and it came up for sale a couple of years back and now obviously it's so lovely it's going to be on the telly. It's described as a 'fisherman's cottage'. You did a back-breaking job on the front patch. Well done and looking forward to seeing the end results. Beautiful pink dress, so uplifting. xxx
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise there was a new series of Scotland's Home of the Year, you recommended it last year and we loved it. Aftre reading your comment we watched the first two last night and our winners were the same as the judges. I can't wait to get to the cottage near you. I'll let you know when we see it! xxx
DeleteYou look lovely in blue. Seems like that would be the type of stately home that could do with your touch of magic decorating.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I could quite happily take on that role! x
DeleteGood afternoon there Vix! Now I am confused as to which picture the NT should use of you as their cover girl! Another glorious pic of you "matching" the bluebells! Credit to Jon too because he is obviously a great photographer! that seems like a lovely property and how wonderful things were left unrestored. I have a top in the colour of your new dress you are going to look amazing in it. Always a pleasure to catch up on Vix world! hug Shazxx
ReplyDeleteYou flatterer, Shaz! Thank you so much! xxx
DeleteI love those circus tent Petunias, I've brought back a couple of those from the garden centre myself, including those dark purple ones. According to its label, they are called "Fiesta", which does seem kind of appropriate! You (and Jon) did a cracking job on that area outside your front gate. Calke Abbey's interior sounds delightful and completely my cup of tea, and again, I could have wandered around those garden for absolutely ages. How divine is that orangery! Herb Robert is one that has invited itself into our garden. I think it was mixed in some bird seed, as it's growing quite wildly beneath our bird feeder. I love it, so it's welcome to stay. That Dilli Grey dress looks gorgeous, I'm sure I'll be able to see you wearing it very soon! xxx
ReplyDeleteFiesta! That is an appropriate name! Good old Wilko and their bargain bedding!
DeleteTomorrow is grass seed sowing - or should be if it stays dry for long enough. I'm so excited taht we might finally have a frontage that doesn't let the neighbourhood down!
I could move into that orangery, it's warm, sunny and perfect.
I can't wait to wear the new Dilli Grey dress! So excited when it popped up on eBay! xxx
I have herb robert everywhere in my garden. It pops up in most of the pots and outside at the front in any crack or crevice. I leave it in the ground but pull it up out of the pots. What a shame you don't live nearer to me; I'd gladly drop some off to you!
ReplyDeleteLoved the look of Calke Abbey and will put it on my must see list. Loved your blue outfit and you blended beautifully with the landscape. I've never known bluebells to be blooming so late.
Your new dress - and matching bag looks gorgeous. Early morning ebay shopping is your secret, I see!
We enjoyed Floodland and are currently watching 'Thicker than Water' - not 'Before We Die' as I said in my previous comment. Have you watched it? Have you watched the new BBC 4 Saturday evening drama - 'Blinded:Those Who Kill'? I think that's what it's called. Noticed a couple of new ones (to us) on Walter the other evening, too.
I was just watching something about auricula theatres and one pops up in Calke Abbey - spooky!
xxx
Gah! If only I didn't live so far away. We get cranesbill which I'm forever splitting up but not herb robert, it's not fair!
DeleteCalke Abbey is stunning, there's loads of NT properties in Derbyshire, no wonder it's a popular holiday destination.
Yes, early morning ebaying is the answer, it's surprising how many people list things before 7am!
Loved Thicker Than Water. We're currently watching The Killing which we've never seen. I've read the book but I'm enjoying seeing the plot unravel anyway. xxx
Calke Abbey is very atmospheric. I'm sure you've been round Snowshill Manor too, but I like it for similar reasons. Arilx
ReplyDeleteYou'd love Calke Abbey! Yes, we love Snowshill for the same reason. Funnily enough I found a booklet for kids I picked up for there on our last visit and made a cardboard model of the manor on Sunday morning! x
DeleteYour photos are so spectacular! I feel like I wandered with you both. I'm in a particular head down time with work, and with two weddings, have no exploring time, but can't wait to practice my skills with some day trips.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sam! I hope you manage to get some spare time soon and that the weddings go well. xxx
DeleteWhat intense colors your photos display in this post! One can imagine sun-guns, light bars and an array of reflectors just off camera. That photo of Jon seated on the bench in the orchard will serve nicely for his next album cover -- vinyl is back, here in the States; so are albums.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite tricky taking photographs, the sunshine kept dazzling us so it was a case of point and shoot!
DeleteVinyl's huge here, too - Jon and I still have every album we ever bought! xxx
Lots of things for me to ooh and aah over in this post Vix. Your outfit for your visit to Calle Abbey is gorgeous. I’d love that dress. Calke Abbey itself is going on my to do list. It’s right up my street. I love everything about it, including the auricula theatre. What a super day out and then to come home to that beauty Dili Grey dress and bag. Perfect xxx
ReplyDeleteYou would love Calke Abbey. Only half the house was open on Tuesday so we'll definitely go back in the summer to see the rest! xxx
DeleteCalke Abbey is gorgeous. Wasn't it the Orangery that inspired your Photowall choice?
ReplyDeleteI love your summery outfit, and the new dress is just incredible! Can't wait to see it on.
Thanks for your reply about Ancestry. I think I might take out a membership and see how I get on. I really have been inspired by your search.
We are off to Weston-super-Mare at the weekend. The height of sophistication (!), but I am ridicously excited about seeing the sea. And they have good charity shops if it buckets down :)
Take care xxx
Hello Annie! we hadn't been to calke Abbey when we chose that Photowall mural, it was such a coincidence when we went into the orangery and say that crumbling plaster wall of our dreams! it is a wonderful place, we shall go back in the Summer.
DeleteHave a fab time in weston, the chazzas are great and the Spoons has a wonderful view! xxx
How exciting that you were able to go inside the Nat'l Trust properties again. I prefer to nose around in places that are preserved rather than restored. We are still in lockdown (extended until June 2nd) so I would be happy to be able to go inside any place that isn't a grocery store. Looking forward to see what you do with the cleared space.
