The Distancing Diaries - 26th & 27th March, 2021

Friday got off to a miserable start with plummeting temperatures, high winds and rain. After my final Wii Fit workout of the week, I wrapped the overnight eBay sales, did a load of washing which I hung up to dry in the utility room and filled the bathtub and utility room sink with houseplants.

After breakfast, Jon did the post office drop-off and the supermarket run and I listened to 6Music whilst hemming my new-to-me kaftan. After another try on I realised it was too big, so I put it on inside-out, pinned the side seams until I was happy with the shape, sewed up the sides and trimmed the excess fabric off with pinking shears. Whilst I was at it I decided to take in the vintage Chelsea Girl maxi dress I was already wearing.

Richard arrived with the post which included an appointment for my three-yearly NHS breast screen which I scribbled down on the calendar. What with our Never-Had-A-Wedding anniversary on the 1st, a trip to the hairdresser and meeting up outside with Liz, Al, Liz & Adrian when the rules are relaxed next week, April's starting to look almost busy!

Liz, a vintage trader friend, was having a bit of a stock sale on her Easy Tiger page and when this jacket popped up on her Facebook page, I just had to make it mine. I was very excited when it arrived.

After our lunchtime noodles, the rain had eased off but it was far too cold to hang about outside for long. I did notice that the reduced to clear violas I'd bought from B&Q last Autumn had bloomed again.

I finished my replacement Only a shitter drops litter banner using the remains of a charity shopped shirt I'd made masks from last summer, trimming it with poms and rik-rak. The sequinned medallions were added after I accidentally stuck a needle through my thumb and dripped blood everywhere. That'll be a nice surprise if anyone decides to nick this one.

Here's the vintage Chelsea Girl dress I altered earlier and, in keeping with my Wear:Sleep: Repeat challenge, I'm wearing my deconstructed waistcoat I made from Marcus's old Levi's again.

The details: Doc Martens (Facebook selling page), Jhumka earrings (Cheryl), Enamel pendant (from Rajasthan) strung on a Lamani dowry necklace (from Goa)

I had a play in my wardrobe, taking out a few dresses that will be perfect under my new jacket.

After I'd removed the plants from the sink and the bath and given everything a good scrub it was time for tea (and wine!)

After pizza and potato lattices with a dollop of chilli mayonnaise from Johal's, we settled down in from of the TV with rum and watched Waking The Dead, a BBC cold case drama series from the early 2000s.

On Saturday Jon brought tea back to bed and we lay reading for an hour. I stripped and changed the bed, loaded the washing machine and, despite the grey skies and miserable temperature, pegged the bedding out on the line. We ate veggie sausage sandwiches and watched last night's Gardener's World.

Jon had decided today was the day he'd rehang the garden rope lights that Storm Ellen had brought down last year. Leaving him to it I tacked the pond area, managing to rake up 12 wheelbarrow loads of leaves, three empty wine bottles, another which used to contain vodka and a can of K cider which used to be my drink of choice. I'd like to say that it brought back happy memories of clubbing back in the 1990s but at 8.4% a can it's all a bit of a blur.

After a posh coffee in the shelter, I supervised Jon while he planted the gooseberry bush I'd bought from Wilko last year and then did an inspection of the crops.

Purple sprouting broccoli, onions, leeks, Winter Marvel & Reine des Glaces lettuce, mizuna leaves, strawberries, wild rocket, cauliflower, Shiraz peas and Greek Gigantes beans. It's all very exciting.

We went for a walk around the block and noticed the groundsmen preparing the bowling green ready for reopening on Monday when Covid restrictions on non-professional sports will be lifted. (That modern building in the background is Wolverhampton University's halls of residence.) I didn't take my grab stick with me and was outraged when I saw that some inbred knuckle dragger had dumped the remains of their Mc*** on the pavement (it's always from there, maybe their customers are more stupid than those that frequent other fast food outlets).

Wear:Sleep: Repeat meant another outing for my 1960s Chelsea Girl maxi dress, this time worn with my new vintage quilted block printed jacket and, of course, a me-made pom pom hat.

The details: Afghan earrings (eBay), tribal cuff (charity shop), vintage amulet pendant (Gujarat), 1970s wellies (jumble sale), Black Pistachio nail paint (Barry M).

The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up with blogland (me) and making music (Jon). I had planned to plant my dahlia seeds but I shall do that tomorrow, I'm all gardened out now (sorry, Monty).

Tea was a salad with garlic bread, homemade potato salad and homegrown lettuce interrupted to pop outside and capture the lights. We'll be drinking rum and watching Grayson Perry's Art Club later. If you're a Brit don't forget to put your clocks forward before bedtime.

Stay safe, well and happy!

  1. You darling dratted girl - that jacket on Facebook is an absolute treasure (smile).

Thanks for reminding me to watch GW (recorded), and I must make a start on clearing up the greenhouse so I can sow my dahlia seeds :-)

  2. You're going to be Lady Bountiful once your rich pickings are ready to harvest. I like the sound of some of your lettuce. Now that I'm on a roll with my planting, I might invest in more lettuce seeds. I love all of your blue dresses, that's a great colour on you. Does your house only have a front entrance and no egress from the back? Your lights look so pretty all strung up. Your hair's getting really long too. I'm watching 'Keeping Faith' on later since there's nowt on Beeb Four tonight. Have a good Sunday, good people. xxx

    1. Have you looked at Real Seeds? They specialise in rare and heritage varieties and every seed I've planted has been a success, they do some amazing varieties of lettuce!
There's nothing at the back of the house, just an expanse of wall. In the 18th century it was three farm labourers' cottages, each with their own door and window at the front, one of the doors was bricked up in the 19th century so there's just two entrances at the front now, it doesn't half confuse visitors!
My hair''s had such a growth spurt, I can tuck it in my waistband!
I've not seen Keeping Faith, I might have to investigate further. xxx

  3. I am loving your Chelsea Girl dress - I can see you are doing a great job on the kaftan but my eyes are fixed on that fabulous Chelsea Girl dress, it's gorgeous . If you like strong cider you would love my favourite tipple, Henry Westons 8.2% Vintage Cider - Vintage see!! Your jacket is very pretty - before I met you/got into your blog I would never have thought you can mix prints but you have taken it to another level!

I'm a bit scared of cider these days, too many hangovers but if it's vinatge it's got to be good!xxx

  4. We sprang forward a couple weeks ago and detest it. Ugh!
    Do you like it?

Very glad you like the anti-litter sayings. So fun to share something like that across the pond. Look forward to seeing them put to use, especially given how obnoxious the McD’s trash is.

The violas are lovely - how nifty they’ve returned. The chili mayo sounds tasty. Cool that you have home grown lettuces through so many seasons. Hope your other veggies are abundant this year. We’re in a drought already and it just breaks my heart. To have your rain would be a gift! Enjoy your Sunday :-)

    1. I hate getting up in the dark and normally, when the clocks spring forward, the evenings are that cold & miserable we close the curtains earlier than usual to shut them out! We're having a couple of days of lovely weather though so i did enjoy sitting out till 8m last night albeit wrapped in a wool cape!
I loved your anti-litter sayings, I hope you like them turned into craft!
California really does suffer with extreme weather. There's no chance of a drought here. xxx

  5. Now I'm getting a bit jealous of your garden, everything is doing so well so far! It gets so hot here after April nothing will survive besides palm trees and other native plants. I love the new jacket and all the dresses you selected will look perfect with it. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Vix. XXX

  6. Your garden is a good six weeks ahead of mine so it is fascinating to see how it is coming along. Some varieties of violas are edible and make a nice addition to a salad-don't know about yours but maybe someone else does.

People and their litter! Lately I've been getting cigarettes butts in my garden. I'm tempted to put a standing ashtray out there but I'm sure it wouldn't get used.

I did think of attaching some kind of bin to the fence for passers-by but I thought the same as you, if they're stupid enough to chuck their litter on the floor they probably wouldn't understand what to do with a bin! xxx

  9. Enjoy the clocks going forward!! my mum suffers from SAD and I always see her mood change this time of year. It’s a lovely sign to hear it in her voice. I hope nome bloody nicks that sign or I come over from shinjuku and kick their ass!!
The kids bock Choi has started to sprout after a week even if they did think it was flowers!! Only my kids could do that. I still have loads of seeds to plant but no room!! i don’t know what to do!! I might grow some in the office . Paul won’t mind.
I was watching this American woman on you tube called Christine maconell restoring 100 year wallpaper I was fascinated!! I couldn’t do it but the patience and time it took blew my mind. Love the jacket. It reminds of the housecoat my neighbour wears and I want to Nick that as well !! I’m too into my granny style skirts and wrap skirts they hide a mutitude of sins and I love them. I love it when they have a persons name in and I often wonder what happened to that person? But they are at a loving home now.

We struggle with seeds as we've only got a couple of window sills, I'm going to put all the trays outside in a bit so they can have a blast of sunshine and heat.
That You Tube video sounds interesting. If you get a chance see if you can find The Fabric of Britian - The Story of Wallpaper on there, it's amazing!
Nursing home markings! I always think it's sad when I find them in clothes in charity shops, after Dad and Grandma died I asked the staff to give their clothes to the other residents, there's always a few people in those places without families to buy clothes for them. Stay safe! xxx

  13. Hello, hello - I can't keep up lol.

That lovely jacket is very Spring-y - I have found these kinds of jacket so useful over the Winter and into a Wintery Spring. I've found quite a few at realistic prices on eBay - but of late, the prices seem to have gone crazy. Am I missing a fashion moment? Is someone off-the-telly making them vogueish??? Stop it lol.

Our tatty looking violas have done a similar thing to yours - the colours are so vibrant - the tree lillies we replanted a few weeks back are showing and our tulip bulbs have their flower heads forming nicely - now we just need a bit of sun and settled weather.

I'm up and down the attic ladder like a mad thing - I've come to the conclusion that I'm not going to need a coat again anytime soon - even as things begin to open-up I think we'll be holding back until we've had our second jab. I've got some summer bits out to freshen-up - but seeing your lovely dresses is making me want to break out mine now!

Take care all - Maryland - keep your thermals on - big love to you xx

    1. Hello, Elaine!
Those quilted jackets are just fab, aren't they? I love my Anokhi riding coat for travelling in (not that there's been much chance of that this winter!)
I don't know why our stuff is so desirable at the minute but even the tattiest bits are fetching a small fortune. I'd been after a blue jacket for ages and was amazed when i spotted one that wasn't going to involve me having to sell a kidney!
I wish my bulbs would hurry up, hopefully this glorious sunshine should encorage them to bloom!
I'm tempted to have a bit of a wardrobe reshuffle and pack away the heavier of my maxi dresses, I've only worn my psychedlic synthetic frocks a handful of times anyway. I might ponder on them for a few months and sell them on.
      Take care! xxx

  15. That vintage quilted jacket is just the thing for the sudden shifts in spring temperatures! I've one in reversible indigo fabrics that is becoming unstuffed. Thanks to your inspiring example, dear Vix, I plan to repair it with an artistically stitched patch.

Once upon a time, when one wore evening clothes to the thea-tah, a friend of mine was flummoxed for a choice of wraps. Capes and furs were too much, but a jeweled sweater wasn't enough. So, she wore her granny's satin bed jacket and only a few of us (with grannies who wore satin bed jackets) recognized her brilliance.

  16. Hi Vix, love, love your blue dresses! Your indoor and outdoor plants are thriving, ya'll do have green thumbs! My brother-in-law came to visit last week and he macheted all the brush and weeds in our back yard that is above the river! Wow we have a wonderful view again! Now I am inspired to clean up the deck and make a nice comfortable area again for when we can have visitors like it used to be!Hope we don't have another covid breakout in our country due to the crazy spring break the kids are on, especially in florida! They didn't have school for almost a year, why do they need a spring break???I live in the State of Washington as you know, and we get the tourists coming to our beaches all summer, but not like the crowds on the East coast. Our Pacific Ocean is a lot colder than the Atlantic!! Love your anti litter signs you are making, very clever and colorful. How long are you doing, your "dress, sleep, repeat", love that idea, I should do something like that and clear out my closet of things that don't fit anymore! Great idea! I took 3 bags full of clothes a couple of months ago to a charity, but it didn't seem to put a dent in my stuff, really need to clear things out! Your vegetable garden is really looking super, love mesclun lettuces! I love daylight savings time and the warmer weather. Hot water tank went out yesterday so Mac bought a new one and we are installing this morning! Last one lasted l5 years, guess thats pretty good for now adays machines!! 1. Hello Chrystal! We could do with borrowing your brother and his machete in our garden, we haven't been able to get to the top of it in years!
I saw the US students on the news here. I expect some will take things too far now the rules have relaxed and we're now allowed to meet up in groups of six in private gardens. I can't control people's stupidity and have long since stopped being anooyed by it, no good for anyone's mental health.
It's been brilliant to work through my wardrobe and see how versitile my clothes can be. I've moved three garments along by selling them but I think the exercise has taught me that I absolutely love what I already own!
Boo to the hot water tank but great that you've got a handy bloke who can replace it. Jon's doing car stuff this morning, I shall be on tea duty! xx

  17. How exciting that April's calendar is starting to fill up, even if it includes your three-yearly breast screen! Love the new sign - let's hope it doesn't get nicked this time around. Talking of a surprise, perhaps you should have hidden that needle inside ... I know, I am bad :-)
Your new quilted jacket is gorgeous and looks fab worn over your Chelsea Girl maxi. Just the thing for a chillier Spring day!
The violas and pansies I bought back in Autumn are blooming like mad here as well. I just love going out into that garden this time of year and watch its progress. Some things seem to be popping up overnight! Your newly installed outside lights look fantastic. I think I'll get Jos to bring out the solar lights now that it's officially Spring.
