The Distancing Diaries - 24th & 25th March, 2021

After my Wii Fit session on Wednesday morning, I put a load of washing into the machine as the forecast had promised sunshine and bright skies. I wrapped my latest eBay sales, swept the rugs in the middle room and dragged my desk out and tackled the dust trap underneath it.  After breakfast, I got halfway down the lawn to peg my washing on the line only for the heavens to open and for me to retreat back into the house and hang everything up in the utility room.

Tony picked Jon up and whizzed him over to the mechanics to collect Gilbert. With plans for the bamboo removal scuppered due to the rain, I finished off the banner I'd started the previous evening. Ages ago my brother had donated his old Levi's to the Kinky Melon stockroom. One pair was beyond help so I deconstructed them, used some of the denim to back my banner and pieced the remainder together for a sewing project. Cherie's also become a craftivist, check out her banners HERE.

By the time Jon was back the rain had stopped so I cracked on with the bamboo. Once Jon had done the VW shuffle on the drive he took over whilst I bagged up the detritus.

We had a break for a bowl of Baxter's butternut squash and lentil dhansak soup and then resumed our digging and by 3.30pm we'd finally finished the job we'd started last September.

Above is how it looked six months ago,

This is now! The moral of the story is if you plant bamboo stick it in a pot!

I'd started the day dressed like this but changed into a knackered 1970s psychedelic maxi dress for the heavy labour. Wear: Sleep: Repeat meant the return of Tuesday's Janet Wood for Monsoon embroidered Afghan blouse worn with an India Imports of Rhode Island tiered maxi skirt (eBay).

The details: Lavender DM Pascal boots (Doc Marten website sale, 2017), Mirrored Lamani earrings (roadside stall, Goa), 1970s Nordiska navy suede belt (car boot sale), India Imports label and this week's nail paint, Barry M's Salt Lake.

Back indoors I continued with my recycled denim project while Jon chatted to another painter and decorator who'd called round to give us a quote. Tea was a tin of baked beans with vegan sausages, a slice of toast and some potato lattices, after all that digging we needed calories! Later we drank rum and watched The Mole Agent, the true story of an 83-year-old Chilean pensioner who went on an undercover mission.

SOURCE

On Thursday, after my Wii Fit workout and I'd put away the previous day's laundry, I wrapped my eBay sales and joined Jon in the kitchen for breakfast.

Grab sticks, sacks, hoops and gloves at the ready, we walked up the road towards the church, picking Sandwell Street, Dandy's Walk, the grounds of the New Street flats and Birmingham Street, bagging two sacks of trash which we labelled and left for the binmen. We continued around the block and part-filled another couple of sacks. The sun was shining and everyone we encountered thanked us and chatted, no sign of any pervy blokes but I was a bit pissed off when I discovered that someone had nicked my "Only a shitter drops litter" sign.

Back at home, we found our post hidden in our special hiding place. Among the voting reminders and charity collection bags was a parcel containing this 1960s embroidered Indian cotton kaftan which I won on eBay for the princely sum of £8. It was deadstock and came in its original packaging. I'm not keen on the fringed hem but it's way too long anyway so I shall hide it in the new hem.

After a break for noodles, Jon wheeled the garden shredder out and we spent the afternoon pulverising it into mulch which we laid between our raised beds, in the fern garden beside the pond and in Jacob's enclosure.

I think we might try shredding the bamboo roots next, we've been following the live feed from both of Walsall Council's tips and there have been queues to get in all day - we might not have a lot to do but I can think of better ways to waste a couple of hours. It probably won't be tomorrow, we've been threatened with the unwelcome return of wintry weather for the next few days.

In other gardening news...look ... we have snake's head fritillaries! They used to grow like weeds in the garden but disappeared about 15 years ago. I grew these from bulbs.

Wear:Sleep:Repeat saw the return of Wednesday's India Imports of Rhode Island maxi skirt, this time worn with a me-made pom-pom hat and my vintage Ayesha Davar cheesecloth blouse.

Ta-dah! Yesterday's sewing project! Levi's labels have, since 2009, advised customers to Care for our planet, wash less, wash cold, line dry, donate or recycle. I chose to recycle my brother's by turning his old 501s into a waistcoat.

The details: Clarks' Orinoco Club Chelsea boots (charity shop), Cheryl's Kuchi bangle that I turned into a necklace, tribal bangles and earrings I inherited from Mum.

Tea was veggie sausages, peas and frittata (Cheddar cheese, shallots, potatoes and chives from the garden). I've no idea what we'll be watching later, I shall explore the BBC i-player shortly.

Stay safe & see you soon!

  1. I adore your little desk area, I would want to sit there all day long. Great outfits and accessories too Vix. I can't believe someone swiped your sign, probably one of the sleazy slimy litter bugs!

  2. Good to get rid of the bamboo - it's like a weed, and so hard to control. Plus it not only grows outwards but upwards very high. The voice of bamboo experience here. Love the denim waistcoat - brings bavk memories of the 1970s when we kept our denim going by making skirts, shorts, bags etc, out of our old jeans.

I remember making a denim skirt and bag from my knackered Levi's in the past. Denim is such a great fabric, it's a shame to waste it. xxx

We have to book to go to the local tip now, it means no queueing which is good.
I love snakes head fritillaries, seeing them reminds me that I should buy some.
Your Levi's upcycle is inspired, they look great as a waistcoat and no waste, double thumbs up!

  4. Evening there Vix, oh no! I feared that would happen - how dare the rotter/s steal your banner! Wow loving all the blue in your outfits of course and loving that polish. Your bamboo saga reminds me of my sister who was not best pleased with her partner for planting bamboo at their previous house. Your garden is amazing. I think that was clever to make a waistcoat out of your brother's jeans. hmm I can see that being another Vix thing perhaps when the chazzas open again. (Will we remember how to rummage?) you could make them for the festivals? Have been watching an old series called "Survivors" made in the 70s sometimes a bit lame but not too bad a watch in other episodes. Anyway clever lady the sofa calls Shazxx

    1. Hello, Shaz! Planting bamboo seemed such a good idea at the time. We seem to have two varieties, the tall stuff and the short bushy stuff, I think I shall leave the rest now I've cleared that patch or maybe borrow a panda!
Decent denim is really hard to find in charity shops, it's always that nasty cheap stuff with Lycra in it but it's a good plan, I can't see us being able to top up our stock levels massively if the festivals do go ahead, there's not enough time to shop!
I loved Survivors! Jon downloaded it a few years ago and we rewatched it. We've just started Waking The Dead on the i_player, it's from the early 2000s back in the days when we were too busy for TV! xxx

  5. Your signs are folk art - people love that stuff, but how rude to steal one! I will admit, I've nicked a piece of urban art that was going to disintegrate when it rained, though. I love your new waistcoat from your brother's jeans - that looks awesome!

Such a lot of work in the garden with that bamboo! Even when you go back to your "normal" festival career, your transformation of that space will pay off for you for years. A little silver lining in all this.

    1. Apparently craftivism is a selfless act so it's okey when people take your stuff away with them, we're supposed to see it as them spreading the message so I'll try and let it go!
We've definitely used all this downtime wisely, the garden has never been so tamed! xxx

  6. I remember the fight to remove bamboo from a previous garden, and it wasn't anything like as big as that which you are tackling. Huge well done.

What a shame someone has nicked one of your signs, there really are some sad folk around 😢

Well done on the snakes head fritillary - I noticed today ours are growing strongly, but nowhere near as advanced as yours. xx

  7. Vix, congrats on the bamboo battling! Love your fritillaries - gorgeous. How’s the new Line of Duty?

How cheeky your cute sign was stolen! Sounds like you need back ups of that pithy saying. Some of mine use American lingo so not sure how useful they’d be. Some are clearly more inspired than others, others are from my childhood:

    - Whether single or a la ménage do not dump your garbage
    - Don’t titter, bin your litter
    - Think again - use the bin
    - Give a hoot don’t pollute
    - It isn’t moot so don’t pollute
    - Garbage doesn’t age like fromage
    - Don’t be rash, bin your trash
    - Slam dunk the junk
    - Feed the can, man
    - Don’t sin, use the bin or Go without sin, use the bin
    - If you litter, the future will be bitter
    - We can’t afford to be trashy
    - Put waste in the right place
    - From your hand into the garbage can

    1. Hello CCC!
You're on a roll, those are brilliant. Thank you so much. There's an ever-increasing amount of Americanisms creeping into our vocabulary so some of those saying might resonate a lot more with the younger litterers!
I'm already on countdown for tomorrow's Line of Duty!

  9. What a difference now your bamboo has gone, and what a massive job. I can't wait for the weather to be warm enough to sit out - we have already bought a nice big gazebo which I am going to decorate with fairy lights and now I'm thinking maybe some new garden furniture. I also mentioned to Hubby that a summerhouse would be nice but in all honesty that might have to wait another year as there is still lots of decorating to do inside.

  11. Love your blogs. Such dedication to the litter. Who on earth does it ? Have you seen anyone. Don’t the council have bins in the streets? I think if anyone did that in New Zealand they would get fined. I know before lockdown we had a lot of problem with tourists being freedom campers and using bushes as toilets at some beaches. That was unthinkably gross. Toilet blocks were being built. Love your clothes. You will be missing your Indian getaways. I’ve had a difficult few months. My husband died 9 months ago. So a sad summer. Autumn now. It’s weird this year. One day like winter, the next sooo hot. Thanks for all your great photos.😊

    1. Sending love to you, Sally, the loss of your lovely husband must still be very raw.
Littering has been a big problem in the UK for decades, there were TV campaigns in the 1960s and again in the 1970s which I remember from my childhood.
The councils do have bins in town centres but not in residential areas. Those caught are fined and there's been cases of people being caught fly-tipping having their vehicles impounded and crushed when they don't pay. Sadly a lot of councils are struggling financially and can't afford to employ people to patrol the streets, same with the police.
I've not caught anyone littering, they know it's antisocial and do it when others aren't around. Jon has caught someone not cleaning up after their dog and taken them to task - you'd expect it to have been some young bloke with a status dog but no, it was a posh woman who thought she was too good to clean up after her mutt.
It's awful when people litter beauty spots like the campers in NZ, it's the same here. xxxx

  12. I knew it, someone who didn’t appreciate either your art or being told off! We have been told we have to put some olympic signs up but no one wants to. I don’t know why. It’s a bit of a weird situation still here. As people want to go but are concerned about covid and especially the low take up rates in Europe.
Love the dress, mum has picked me up a couple of bargain skirts and says they are right up my street, one is a granny style which I love wearing and one looks like well curtains, but in a good way from river island.
Yeah bamboo is a nightmare to keep under control even in a pot it tried to escape ours!, better still stick to a single stem like we have ours is 15 years old and it’s huge in the house and we love it.

    3. Hi Allie! The craftivism code says that your work is donated to the good of the public so it's to be expected when things get nicked, the culprits might be displaying the signs in their areas instead.
Has your mum been trawling ebay fro your treats? We've got a fortnight until the chazzas reopen but I'm more excited about having beers in the garden with the gang from Monday - so exciting! It's been illegal for months! xxx

  14. Your banners are going to become famous! Your new kaftan looks very African and a diversion from your usual style, I like all the detail on it and your skirt and Monsoon blouse go so well together. The waistcoat is fun and a clever idea - when I was a teenager everyone used to make skirts or hippy bags out of old jeans, but I've never seen them made into a waistcoat before! You are going to have muscles on muscles after removing all that bamboo. Most of mine is in pots, but I did also make the mistake of planting some in the ground. Now it's near-impossible to get it out, being sandwiched between paving and a wall. I thought it would be ok as it is 'clump forming' - but apparently not :0

  23. Hello Vix, I'm hoping you can help me with a million to one shot. About a month ago my husband and I lost our beloved Vancouver Island farmhouse to a terrible fire (we are both form Halifax U.K. originally) Everyone was safe but my husband lost his entire wardrobe and he had some quite funky stuff. Most upsetting to him was losing his vintage Interstate leather motorbike jacket. He'd had it since he was 25 and at nearly 66 was still wearing it and looking cool! It was navy blue with a funnel neck and zipper across the chest area. Size 42. Do you know of any sites I might check and try to find one ? I found the nearly identical jacket on ebay.u.k. but it was too small. Blast!! It would be the best present if we can replace his wonderful jacket that has so many memories attached. He's the love of my life and a wonderful father of 5 so we are all working on this. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks for keeping us connected to home. Diane

    1. Hello Diane. I'm so sorry to hear about your fire, how utterly dreadful for you. I'm glad you're safe but how awful that your poor husband lost his wardrobe. By coincidence we were asked by a friend to look for a navy leather biker jacket for him several years ago, the only ones we've ever come across are small but I shall certainly ask fellow tradimng friends to keep an eye out for you. A quick search on UK eBay took me to the one you must have found.
I don't use anything other than eBay for clothes hunting. I would recommend you save your eBay search and opt for email notifications when anything matching the jacket is listed. Are you on Facebook? It might be worth posting a "wanted" ad on Marketplace, someone might have one lurking in the depth of their wardrobe.
