The Distancing Diaries - 20th & 21st February, 2021

An indignant *brip* woke us at 7.45am on Saturday morning, it was Frank anxious to go out. Jon got up, let the lads out and brought tea back to bed where we lay and read until the MyHermes man rapped the door at 9am. Jon went downstairs to start breakfast and I stripped and remade the bed and loaded the washing machine.

After a breakfast of veggie sausage, a fried egg and a slice of toast I removed my nail paint and dusted and swept the bedroom before getting dressed.

Once Jon was ready we went out litter picking in the pouring rain, bumping into several old friends along the way. There wasn't too much litter but with all our chatting we were out for well over an hour and absolutely wringing wet when we got home.

We had a posh frothy coffee and spent the rest of the day pursuing our individual pursuits, Jon fitted some new straps to a few of his watches ( I say a few, he's got quite a collection of secondhand watches).

Whilst, using a ball of my new wool, I made myself some beer mittens following a tutorial I'd found on YouTube.

Wear:Sleep:Repeat continued with my Anokhi maxi skirt, this time worn with the hat I made last weekend and an organic dobby cotton lampshade sleeve top bought from FabIndia in Panjim (Goa's capital city) a couple of years ago.

The details: Assorted silver bangles, Afghan earrings (eBay), Tibetan pendant (Goa) and Clarks' Orinocho boots (Ebay, 2019)

As we'd not eaten since breakfast, tea was early, eaten in front of the TV in the lounge with a glass of wine and consisted of Friday's beer and olive bread, cheeses, pickle, my homemade potato salad and olives.

We spent the evening watching Deutchland 83 with rum & cola.

On Sunday morning Stephen had me up at 7.30am. I made tea and brought it back to bed and we lay and read until it was time to tune into Andrew Marr at 9am. We had toast for breakfast and I painted my nails before starting my next crochet project. I did a happy dance when I spotted my first daffs of the year, inexplicably growing in our border. I've no idea how they got there!

Once dressed we set off for a walk. Our community litter picking group have pledged to litter pick specific areas of Walsall next Sunday as part of the council's Spotlight on Litter campaign so we were off to scout a suitable area we could tackle. Last night we could hear some car engines idling for ages but, as the door was locked and the lads were in, didn't bother going outside to see who it was. When we left the house the avenue was awash with McD**ald's wrappers and takeaway boxes, filthy scumbags! We'd got soaked to the skin yesterday cleaning up after people and the idle bastards go and do it again. I went back inside, got my grabstick and gloves and filled a bag with their crap. I've always said I'd rather eat out of a bin than dine at McD**alds, obviously their clientele don't even know what a bin is.

We walked up to St Matthews (that's a photo I took back in December, today wasn't sunny) and decided that picking around Church Hill would be next Sunday's task. We noticed that there were a couple of council bins up there so we can attach official stickers to our rubbish bags, post photos to the Facebook page when we're done and the binmen will collect when they empty the bins up there.

We had a wander about, spotted signs of spring in the graveyard, a blue plaque I'd never noticed before and a memorial from the Socialist Alliance dedicated to all those injured or killed at work. The marvellously Brutalist structure replaced the former St Matthews Parish Institute when it was demolished in 1952. 28 and 30, Birmingham Road date to 1850 and were formerly posh residences but have been offices since the 1960s.

Back at home I posed for my daily Wear:Sleep:Repeat photo, rewearing Saturday's FabIndia blouse with a vintage Papillion block printed wraparound skirt (eBay), a me-made pompom hat and Liz's old Elgee Coat.

The details: Kuchi amulet pendant from friends, Old's Cool Traders, Indian earrings (inherited from Mum), Mrs Jones' Gohill's boots and this week's Barry M nail paint, Rock Pool.

For the first time this year we enjoyed an al fresco coffee in the shelter. After our lunchtime noodles I continued with my crochet, whilst Jon did some vehicle shuffling outside.

Project completed - another pom pom hat - I thought I'd continue with my new series, cats and crochet. I spent the remainder of the afternoon wrapping eBay parcels. If the government really do decide to open up in the late summer and music festivals are allowed to happen I'm starting to panic, by the rate we're selling stuff there'll be no stock left.

I can't believe tomorrow marks day 43 of my Wear:Sleep:Repeat challenge, by the way it's going I could be doing this for months! Maybe I'll be shoe-horning in sandals and a sunhat before too long.

Tonight we're having pizza and the rest of my potato salad for tea then it's another Deutchland 83 extravaganza. I'd better get blog reading and commenting, I've fallen way behind.

Stay safe, happy & healthy and see you soon!

  1. Walking the dog at a riverside oark, there were 1/2 dozen filled poo bags by the post that holds courtesy pet bags, just lying in the ground. For goodness sake-I couldn't believe they expected someone else to dispose of them! I'm scared to see what garbage will be uncovered when snow melts. I hope you get a chance to shop soon and restock.

    1. We've come across a lot, too - aren't people arrogant assuming someone will clear up after them?
Who knows when non-essential shops will open again. There's a rumour it may be the end of March but who knows? We won't be shopping like we used to do pre-pandemic until we're vaccinated! xxx

  2. I can't wait for the day when we're woken up again by an indignant *brip*. I know it's too soon but we have decided we need to have another cat in our lives at some point. Love Jon's collection of watches, which I'll be showing to Jos later.
Saturday's Anokhi maxi worn with the lampshade sleeve top is fabulous, such gorgeous colours. The blouse looks equally wonderful with today's wraparound midi skirt, though.
Spring bulbs seem to be popping up all over our garden. I even detected a patch of bluebell foliage, and there may be some daffs I replanted in Autumn. Isn't it lovely to see those signs of Spring?
Well done on another round of litter picking, but how frustrating about the McD**alds litter! It was on the news that it being a Springlike weekend, hordes of people flocked to Antwerp, taking takeaway food and drink to parks and squares and leaving all their rubbish behind. I've seen the photos and it was horrible! Ugh!
I hope everything goes to plan and things will go ahead in late Summer at yours. The snail's pace rate our vaccines are being rolled out, I don't see it happening here! xxx

Jon does love his watches, I've suggested he challenges himself to wear a different one every day now they've all got straps.
Aren't the signs of Springtime bulbs poking through the earth wonderful? Our lawn has a purple haze from all the crocuses!
Why are people so inconsiderate with litter? It's not a big ask to take your rubbish home with you, is it? If I catch those scumbags throwing their McD wrappers away next time I might have to bash them with my grab stick.
Us Over-50s should be getting our jabs in April - bring it on! xxx

  3. You never stop! all that litter picking and walking around interesting places, then home to make crochet creations! I love your necklace and earrings. Don't worry about having enough stuff for festivals later in the year - I imagine when the chazzas open up again there are going to be some real gems to stock up on.

  4. People who liter like that just make me sick. What is so hard about throwing away your trash in the proper place?! It is very nice that you and Jon go out and help with the clean up. love both outfits with the red blouse......
festivals in summer? can´t believe. but even if - i would not go to crowded places until vaccinated - both of us.
btw: in hamburg there are 2 cats diagnosed with covid - sadly the ownder died on it - but thankfully the kitties have only light symptoms of running nose.
things like mc "doof" schould be forbidden - not only for the garbage/litter producing but for the mega unhealthy food too!

    1. Cats and tectiles, two things that are guaranteed to make me happy! I did hear something similar about cats contracting Covid, they can't pass it on to humans but it does make them poorly for a few days.
I can't really see many festivals going ahead even if the government do achieve their ambition of getting the adult population vacinated by July there's still got to be a second dose and then there's Brexit and European musicians needing a work permit to play, if Covid doesn't kill festivals then Brexit will.
Eating McD's junk is not only bad for health but it must make those that eat it stupid judging by the way they behave with their litter. xxx

  6. I like the Atticus Finch plaque. Where does it hang and also, where do you keep your stack of hats, of which there is a lot, now?!I love the fingerless mitts. Well done you. There's a new archaeology prog on Friday nights that I think you and J might like. 'Raiders of the Lost Past' with Janina Ramirez. This week's was all about the Minotaur's Palace on Crete. Some eejit shed their disposable mask on the pavement next to where I park my car. That's a definite no-no from me!Great work on your litter-picking you two.xxx

I love Janina Ramirez and hadn't heard of Raiders of the Lost Past, I shall definitely track that down.
You need a grab stick for those masks, keep the filthy things at arms length! xxx

  7. Your Jon and my husband and their watches. Mine is terrible, he only wants the watches that don't have batteries and are either solar or movement wound. I don't know how he picks which one to wear. Oh, and they can't have calendars or roman numerals!

Deutchland 83. I lived in West Germany then and so many memories were brought back when I watched it. I feel old now, that part of my life is now history.

We were awoken at 0800 this morning by a muted "woof" from downstairs. Our oldest dog no longer climbs stairs and just stands at the bottom and barks to tell us it's past his breakfast time! The other dog (who we are only supposed to be watching but will be staying due to her people divorcing) gets carried up nightly (she weighs 8lbs) and spent the night lying on top of the duvet on top of the hot water bottle. Spoilt bitch.

You must be selling out your stock at warp speed. Everytime I check there is one coat by itself!

    1. Jon was explaining the intricacies of the movement wound watch to me last night, I bet him and your husband would get along like a house on fire! He loves weird and wonderful watches and when the charity shops used to be open he'd be straight up to the counter looking to see what was stashed underneath the till.
I loved Deutchland 83 (which we've just finished) and now its 86 for the second time. I rememebr watching the wall coming down on my tiny black and white portable TV in my student hovel, it was a different world.
Elderly dog woofing at the bottom of the stairs made me laugh abnd how about your foster dog? She sounds like she's living the life of Riley. I bet she'll never wabt to leave! xxx

  9. You are good doing all that litter picking. How dare the MackieDee-ers mess it up again! When McDonalds reopened following the first lockdown, there were reports of major traffic queues caused by people waiting for the drive thrus. I couldn't believe having a gross takeout was deemed to be that important!

Daffodils are funny things. I get a fair few plants from a neighbour and often there's some surprise bulbs in the pot, that don't reveal themselves straight away. I am loving your new crochet and cats series. Wow, I think the red outfit is my favourite thus far. Although Liz's old coat is super grand too. Lulu xXx

  12. I used to love watches, I still have a few, but along came my Apple Watch, and it’s like my phone and personal organiser on my wrist!! my mum was horrified when she saw it and was talking to Paul into it last year!! I come from a family of watch and Jewellery collectors , I collect silver and the odd watch, twin is a Pandora fanny lol mum is a watch and gold fan, dad is a watch fan as is my brother. My dad is a 60 year old Rolex , but I am too scared to have it so I have asked for their wedding bands when the time comes.
I wear this massive ankh Paul bought me 5 years ago and it never comes off my neck, even when I am in hospital.
I love atticus finch he was my hero growing up. As well as Fleetwood Mac, I. Told you I was an odd ball!!! i cried when Lindsey Buckingham left!!
I am glad you are still doing the litter pick. We did put area tidy and I was telling one of the old dears, she just shook her head and she said they need to come here. We’re else we’re you could you find a man picking up bits for the birds after they had eaten enough only here!! No joke! Please keep up with the history lessons it’s like being back in school. If I did a blog I think it would be too boring. Keep safe love and hugs to you all

You'd have to get that Rolex serviced and lock it up in a safe, the prices go up every year, they're a brilliant investment.
I'd love to know where that Atticus poster came from, I wouldn't mind one myself!
If only everyone would take some responsibility for their area, I don't get why anyone would just ignore rubbish or ring the council and moan rather than sorting it out themselves! Loads of love! xxx

  16. Morning Vix, well done on the litter pick. I do our roadside - I can easily do 3 big bin bags a week - lockdown means less fast food waste and beer cans - but no let up in used nappies and dog crap bags lol.

It always makes me laugh when I'm picking up Smart Water branded bottles - very smart indeed - but then perhaps folks think it will make them smart if they drink it. We get more rubbish on a black bin collection day as quite a lot of rubbish seems to get blown out of the bins when the binmen open the wheely-bin lids.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. I hate the dirty clods who think it is cool to throw their shite out of the car window (and let their kids do the same). I cannot fathom out why on earth anyone would think it's OK to do the same with disposable nappies. - but then again, a lot of plastic bottles do seem to contain wee - so who knows.

I love seeing bits of life and detail in the verges and hedges that ordinarily you'd whizz by. Nature is amazing - the birds are making nests - rats and crows are busily cleaning up any food scraps and road kill. Buds are bursting, life is everywhere.

I salute you both with my liitter-grabber lol!! (Litter picking chat ends)

Isn't it funny how many folks just love their watches?! It's that thing of being analogue in a digital world (my Mister is a wind-up watch man) - also, does anyone else have the pocket watch sickness? It's a whole other world of fobs and alberts.

Loving the frockage and finds - I am on the naughty step for February lol Thank goodness it is March next week ...

    Here's a link to a Seventies/Flare revival that's happening, apparently.

    1. Afternoon, Elaine! We've always done our avenue too, the good thing about being part of the group is that you can leave all your pickings in special bags and the bin men will take them when they empty your bins, before then we'd often have a full bin before bin day and not be able to get anything else in there.
The Smart water made me laugh, it's obviously not working and don't get me started on nappies and piss-filled bottle, there's a huge dump of it in the area we've pledged to clean at the weekend, filthy beasts!
I swaer there's more crocuses around that ever this year, our lawn is awash and it makes me so happy. the Lads are fascinated by the field mice in the rockery and will spend hours staring at rocks like their on some mind-bending drugs!
I don't mind a fob watch - as long as it's attached to Tommy Shelby!
I thought everyone would be wanting flares after watching The Serpent, Charles Sobraj might have been a psycotic nutter but he looked splendid in his!

    2. Heh - we have big lurid green litter bags and I have been awarded my own wheely bin to store my pickings (we are semi-rural and want to avoid little visitors, if you know what I mean). Its good to have somewhere to keep them - during Covid the bin men have been taking them away on the black bin round. Prior to that, the street cleansing team would take them - plus any fly-tipping. Sadly, there's always stuff in the field ditches - thankfully, the weather has kept a lot of tippers indoors, but no doubt it'll be back. All the decluttering shite needs to go somewhere and the charity shops are closed!

  26. I’ll show Philip , Jon’s watch collection, he will be interested in that. He doesn’t have lots but he has one he bought off a man in a bar in Greece in the 80’s and is now valued at over £1500. He gave him £50 for it I think.
I’ll get the details and see if Jon knows the make.
Hopefully you’ll get some milder weather for the litter picking. Before you know it you’ll be full on again in the garden. It seems such a short time ago you started your home growing doesn’t it

    1. Jon's very curious to see Philip's watch. Was the chap he bought it off trying to extend his trip, I wonder!
After today's sunshine and mild temperatures I'm very excited about the new growing season. I'm hoping for a dry day on Sunday, there's a lot of litter up there! xxx

  28. There are a lot of homeless people in our neighbourhood so there tends to be lots of trash all over. Someone dumped a couple of open bags of garbage across the street from me a couple of months ago, and to keep it from getting spread all over I went and cleaned it up. At least the neighbours appreciated me doing that but it would be great if someone else would do it if it happens again.

Apparently there aren't going to be any in-person festivals at least until at least July 1st here in Ontario. I wouldn't be comfortable hanging around with a lot of people, most likely not wearing masks, anyway, but I do miss the live music and the food. I so enjoy seeing what new pompom hats you've created - great colours! Jon has an impressive watch collection.

  29. I'm sure you'll find lots more stuff in the charity shops once they reopen - they'll have so much stuff landing on them, they'll be desperate to get rid of it, I reckon.

Our gardens are back-to-back with the next terrace along, and some scrote keeps dumping stuff outside out back gate. They have to walk up the alley to do it! Drives me dotty.

  30. I do hope you get your Vaccines soon, earlier than expected. They lowered the Age restriction here to 55 so now it's not just the Ancient ones and Essential Workers who qualify. So I got my first jab Yesterday, they had such an efficient and well organized system that I was getting my shot thru the Drive-Thru in 5 minutes, then 15 minutes to observe you to ensure you didn't have adverse reaction, then Home again! They are doing mass Vaccination Events here in the Big Cities, I don't know how Rural areas are handling it, but I'm mostly hearing Positive things. I got the Pfizer and will have my 2nd jab on the 26th, not a bad experience at all, but I do hear the 2nd dose can be a bit of an arse kicker so I'm preparing myself for that possibility.

  31. Ha! I know the exact sort of *brip* you mention.
Won’t it be nice to be back in sandals and sunhats?
