The Distancing Diaries - 18th & 19th February, 2021

On Thursday, despite Stephen's best efforts to get me up at 5am, I managed to stay in bed till 6.30am. I put away the teatowels I'd washed the previous day, did my Wii Fit workout and after a blog comment catch up joined Jon for breakfast. Guilty about how Mrs Blackbird was staring at him through the kitchen window, Jon crumbled some out of date rice cakes and left them on the bird table, only for a cheeky squirrel to make off with most of them.

Our friendly MyHermes driver turned up bearing parcels, the Superdrug stuff I'd ordered the day before (speedy service!) and the tunic I'd bought from ebay on Monday morning. The description mentioned that the cuffs were a little loose so I sat at the kitchen table and replaced the elastic.

The indoor photos don't do this Alpnani top justice, the colours are more red than brown and the fabric is a heavyweight handloomed cotton, perfect for our climate.

Needless to say, I had to wear it immediately and, as luck would have it, Wednesday's suede coat was the perfect accompaniment and slotted into my Wear:Sleep:Repeat challenge seamlessly. The 1970s Ayesha Davar skirt and burgundy opaques (both eBay) have popped up previously. Check out the re-dyed roots, they were hidden under a hat when I was litter picking on Wednesday.

The details: You've seen the charity shopped River Island olive green boots before and the silver chain hoops from festival neighbours, Shilpa Silver.

The vintage Christian Dior sunglasses were a present from Jon (via eBay) and last made an appearance in Crete back in September, in those heady days when travel wasn't an illegal activity.

Whilst Jon took advantage of another mild, sunny day and scrubbed Gilbert's pop-top, I wrapped my ebay sales, ironed some menswear and photographed it in the garden (kilts were always popular at festivals). The bin crew emptied our wheelie bins and collected our litter picking sacks, giving us a thumbs up for our efforts.

After a break for a vegan sausage roll I uploaded the photos and posted my listings on ebay then Jon and I went for a walk around the block getting halfway round before the heavens opened. Back at home I spent an hour and a half with Harry Hole although I nodded off at one point, waking myself up when I dropped the book on the floor.

Tea was pasta with Jon's tomato sauce, grated Cheddar and some home grown basil. Despite being sixteen in May, Stephen Squirrel finds it impossible to sit still and races around like a kitten. Here's a rare moment of calm.

We still haven't got round to watching any of I Can't Get You Out of My Head, getting sucked into a three part Trump documentary, watching the second part the previous evening and the final tonight (I needed an hour of Pottery Throwdown to get him out of my head). In anticipation for Deutschland 89, which starts in a fortnight, we've decided to rewatch the previous two series, kicking off with Deutschland 83. If you haven't seen it then I can't recommend it highly enough, one of Walter Presents finest, a brilliant cold war drama, fantastic soundtrack and stunning cinematography.

On Friday, after my final Wii Fit workout of the week, I wrapped the overnight ebay sales before washing the vintage glass and scrubbing the fireplace in the lounge and sweeping and dusting the hallway.

After breakfast I did a load of washing and hung it up to dry in the utility room whilst Jon, after a quick stocktake of the larder, went on a post office & grocery run. Meanwhile I made a beer & olive loaf - resisting the temptation to drink the excess ale - and mopped the kitchen floor while it cooked.

Looking a bit wet and windswept, Richard the postman arrived with parcels, some wool for my next crocheting project (whatever that might be, it's always good to be prepared).....

And an unworn Anokhi indigo and gold block printed bolero I'd snaffled on eBay a couple of days ago (it'll look even better once I've ironed it!) I'm on a roll with eBay lately, I won an amazing Anokhi skirt earlier.

My beer and olive loaf turned out well, we shared the still-warm crust slathered in butter, before our lunchtime noodles.

When I went to the Kinky Shed I noticed that the rain that had plagued us for most of the day had stopped so I posed for a quick outfit photo.

I'm continuing to Wear:Sleep:Repeat in Thursday's Alpnani tunic, this time tucked into my 1970s Anokhi maxi skirt.

The details: Clarks' Orinocho Club Chelsea boots and vintage tooled leather belt (both charity shopped) and Turkoman earrings (eBay)

I spent the rest of the afternoon photographing and listing stock on ebay, today's theme being miscellaneous accessories. The Costa Brava beach bag was one of a pair I used to take to the swimming baths when I had post-operative hydrotherapy classes (another council initiative before austerity reared its ugly head), its lined with plastic so perfect for wet swimwear. The other is printed Benidorm,I must have sold it in a moment of madness, not that I've ever been, I just loved the TV series.

We've got halloumi for tea later, The Arctic Murders and more of Deutchland 83 to entertain us and rum for afters (it's ready and waiting for us in the lounge).

Stay safe and see you soon!

Interested in knowing how you installed the violet curtain that slides over your entry door.
Thank you for your posts, always a treat to read.

    1. Thank you so much, Tess! We just screwed a curtain rail to the door frame, a few inches above the actual door to allow for the curtain rings, it's ideal for filtering out the draughts. xxxx

  2. I just love seeing your outfit - the Alpnani tunic is fabulous and with the skirt even more fabulous - I would love to have pieces like this, you are very clever at tracking these gems down. Hair looks great - after reading your post some time back about using coconut to condition, I tried a coconut pack and was amazed at how good it is for a weekly or fortnightly deep treatment :) oh Benidorm yes I loved the series too (we had our honeymoon there, the inlaws, my boss/family all tagged along) we went back in 2018 with our boys and took pics outside the pub our family used to frequent - same people still owned it - the Old Town is very pretty.

    1. Thanks, Betty! I thought that tunic looked nice but was thrilled when it turned up, it's a really weighty cotton and quite structural. I've found a few gems recently, the skirt I won today looks quite exciting, I can't believe I was the only bidder.
Coconut oil is a miracle worker and so cheap!
I remember your Benidorm post! My Mum had a very posh friend who would take two foreign holidays a year, one usually a Sandals resort in the Carribean or a swanky cruise and the other was always a week in a hotel in Benidorm, she always said the Benidorm holiday was the best! xxx

  3. Your new top is absolutely gorgeous and I ~know~ it would be slumming for you, but it’d look great with jeans . . .

Super photo of Stephen doing his best “butter wouldn’t melt” impersonation and clearly completely innocent of trying to get you up at silly-o’clock 😄

    1. Isn't it a lovely thing? I did think it would look good with jeans, shame I've listed the only pair I own on ebay! They just aren't me.
Stephen is so naughty, I shout at him then he gives me that innocent look and I feel awful! xxx

  4. So many beautiful outfits, love your new additions. Stephen is 16 wow! Cheeky Squirrel but they are cute too although sometimes destructive. We are technically not supposed to travel outside our community but are asked to support local so we are booking an airbnb house right on the ocean half an hour away from here for a few days in April. We were robbed of all of our holidays last year so this will celebrate the end of chemo and often the orcas frolic in the bay in front of that house so hopefully they make a showing for us.

I think your break sounds absolutely fine, you won't be travelling too far and you'll be self contained and what's more, you totally deserve a break! I would love to see orcas frolicking! xxx

  5. Well I’ve just now spent a lovely half hour catching up.
Oh my goodness how I wish I was stood in the sunshine on those steps in Crete. I’m longing for a bit of heat.
I’m chuckling about Stephen Squirrel, he reminds me of his female owner, not keeping still.
Get you baking a loaf, it sounds lovely. Is it your own recipe ? Those camel coloured shoes are nice. I’ve just sent for some tan ones from a company in Denmark to replace the knackered Clarke’s ones.
An update on the coat my neighbour offered. Her son spotted it and nabbed it for his girlfriend.
Have a good weekend you two xxx

    1. That mild weather has been most welcome but I can't wait to feel the sun on my bare arms again. I hope we get another glorious spring like last year, we certainly deserve one.
Jon always says that the reason Stephen is mad is because he's spent too many years with me, cheek!
The beer bread was a fancy mix Matcus bought me for my birthday, it's by a comany called Jar House, it was so straightforward, no kneading or proving and worked brilliantly, a lovely treat. You just need beer!
I like the sound of your Danish shoes and I'm really pleased the coat is staying in the family! Hope you have a lovely weekend! xxx

  6. love the colours in the ball of wool on the far left, cant' wait to see what you make with it. It's blowing a hoolie here so we have done an online art workshop (lots of fun, but only confirmed I am rubbish at art) and reading and a bit of crochet. Suspect the weekend will be the same, but the kitten is still mad as a box of frogs so we have plenty of inhouse entertainment. Hope you have a lovely weekend x

We've got that crazy wind, too - the lads are all skittish, Frank's been trying to bit Jon which is hilarious as he has no teeth.
I'd love to see your kitten dashing around. Has he learnt how to climb the curtains yet? Have a lovely weekend, too. xxx

  7. I love your new jacket and the King Cole Riot wool (so soft and fluffy) would look great as a hat to go with it.I was listening to the radio during the night (post-vaccination sleepless one)and they were talking about the 'yam-yam' language of the Black Country. It sounded really interesting so just thought I'd ask you about it. I'm on last couple of episodes of last series of Line of Duty and it's rivetting. Have a good weekend.xxx

    1. Yay! I'm delighted that you've had the vaccine, hope you're feeling okay now. Excellent suggestion about the King Cole Riot, that might be tomorrow's project!
Yes, we're known as yam-yams and the words many people round here still use are related to both Early Middle English and the Germanic language of the Anglo Saxons. When you get time watch our friend, Brendan Hawthorne, on Youtube, he's the poet laureate of the Black Country : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1oYx5vqYQU
The more you mention Line of Duty, the more I think we need to follow suit and catch up.
Have a fab weekend yourself! xxx

  8. Rare but lovely photo of Stephen sitting still! Reading about Stephen and Frank waking you up before dawn, I now realize what an easy-going cat Phoebe was. I don't think she ever did that, unlike our previous cat, who wasn't averse to rattling the built-in cupboard door next to our bed!
Your newly arrived blouse does indeed look even more vibrant than it did in the eBay photo, and it looks a treat worn with the Ayesha Davar skirt and suede coat, and it looks equally well tucked into today's Anokhi maxi skirt.
I was about to succumb and dye my own hair to at least do away with the grey streaks when we got news our hairdressers would be re-opening. I've got an appointment for next week. Just in time as my hair is driving me mental.
You are definitely on an eBay roll, and I can't wait to see you wearing your purchases. xxx

    1. I think you were very lucky with Phoebe, she was a very well behaved lady! I was going to say that it was because of the calm humans she shared her home with but then you mentioned your previous cat and her cupboard rattling.
It's funny, even my own photo of that tunic looks brown rather than red, it must be the cotton absorbing the light.
I'm very pleased to hear about your hairdresser reopening - I think we're a while away from that happening yet, I bet you can't wait! xxx

    1. The beer and olive bread was very tasty. I'm not sure about cider bread, it sounds a bit like a dessert rather than something to have with butter and a glass of wine. I love olives, too! I had to used garlic-stuffed jarred ones but they worked really well. xxx

  17. Wonderful photos in this post, Vix. I share your and Jon's concern for the birds. This morning I joined the cats in watching our guests at the breakfast buffet and felt gratitude for this spark of life and movement and color in a silent snowy landscape. When we're out and about in the world, white walls and simple surfaces are refreshing. Now we're starving for colors, layers and activity! Do hope that Jacob and Stephen Squirrel are correct in predicting spring is at hand!

  20. What beautiful swag, Vix - love Anokhi in those beautiful deep shades. Having said that, your Alpnani top looks so crisp and fresh and resdy for sunshine. Heaven knows we are ready for a bit of Spring in this house!

I didn't comment on your last tour post as I've been plagued with sinus probs. It doesn't take much to tip me into day's-long migraines - so as you can imagine - not at my best. Yesterday I was dropping things and more wobbly than usual which is a bit of a worry - but today - fortified by Sudafed Extra and tummy-settling tea with fennel, ginger and mint - I feel vaguelly human. I really think that not being outside more often is taking it's toll.

Thank you for the block-print shirt distraction lol.

My Mum is all - bugger Boris. She's half-jabbed and raring to go lol.

I too am psyching myself up for Can't Get You Out of my Head, and I have flirted with the idea of rewatching the first two parts of the Deutschland trilogy - although who knows how many parts it will have. Will the fall of the wall be the end? Can't wait to find out. One of my very favourite Walter Presents offering, but one of the very few my husband didn't like. We struggled through the second episode of The Red Shadows; you were right to give up on it from the start, very trite. We have just two episodes of All The Sins season 2 left - please let there be a season 3 - and then we'll be looking for something new. I'll report back if I find any crackers.
