Despite the cold I just had to run outside barefoot, clad in just a vest & leggings to capture Friday's blood red morning sky. I did my final Wii Fit workout of the week, filled the bathtub and utility room sink with water and gave the houseplants drink. With having the central heating on all week, the poor things were parched. After our breakfast Jon popped out to the post office, calling in at Morrison's on the way back for groceries.
I made a start with catching up with blogland and, when Jon got back, posed for a couple of photos before he dispensed with all his layers for the day and concentrated on sanitising the shopping & putting it away.
Wear:Sleep:Repeat continued with my Ritu Kumar midi dress, worn with a Wetherall of Bond Street wool cape bought from a charity shop twenty years ago, my me-made pompom hat, the beer mittens Liz had made me for my birthday and one of my eBayed Amor Lux Breton tops.
The details: 1970s French high-heeled wellies (jumble sale), silver ball earrings (Shilpa Silver) and vintage Kuchi tribal necklace (bought in Jaisalmer, Jan 2020)
After our lunchtime noodles I gave the bathroom a good scrub and mopped the floor, continuing down the stairs. Jon helped me swap the plants over so each had their turn. I caught up with blog comments and had the rest of the pizza for tea.
Later we watched the second half of the Shannon Matthews documentary we'd started watching the previous evening followed by Rebecka Martinsson: The Arctic Murders ( I prefer the dogs, Snoris and Tintin to the main character) and another episode of the Great British Pottery Showdown, accompanied by rum and cola. Despite the late hour I decided to mop the kitchen floor before bed. I do live life on the edge!
Jon was up first on saturday morning, he made tea and brought it back to bed where we lay and read until 8.45am. After he'd gone downstairs to put the sausages in the oven I stripped and changed the bed, loaded the washing machine and sat at the kitchen table painting my nails. We ate our sausage sandwiches accompanied by a mug of coffee marvelling at all the birds assembled on the feeding station and wondering where they all were on the day of the Big Birdwatch a fortnight ago!
Another day of sub-zero temperatures meant I had more layers than a layered thing under my vintage Anokhi pinafore dress...I do have a waist normally, honest! Wear:Sleep:Repeat saw the return of Friday's Breton top and yet another wearing of my trusty sheepskin hat.
The details: 1960s go-go boots (car boot sale), vintage Indian silk screen print scarf & white metal earrings (both charity shopped), Barry M's Ginger nail paint.
I know I keep banging on about it but I'm really enjoying my challenge to rewear a garment from the previous day. In normal times I'd have worn my new-to-me purchases immediately but now they have to wait until I can slot them into my outfits.
I photographed and listed some of the stock of vintage bags on eBay - longtime readers may recognise quite a few of these from my personal collection. Again I used the kitchen wall as a backdrop, I don't think I'd have had a face left if I'd taken the photos in the garden!
I haven't been further than the top of the garden for almost a week, I'm so excited about the arrival of milder temperatures in the next few days and the possibility of venturing further than the compost bin that I made myself a new pompom hat especially.
My new specs made all the difference. Repairing my Anokhi jacket and crocheting are a lot easier when I can see what I'm doing.
A year ago today I achieved a lifelong ambition, to have beers in Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and to run up and down the grand staircase recreating the scene from the Merchant Ivory film, Bombay Talkie.
Although we've visited our beloved Mumbai a lot over the years we'd never been brave enough to try and get into the swankiest hotel in all of India, expecting the doorman to take one look at us and send us on our way but, in 2020, we took a deep breath, made our way towards the front entrance where the comissionaire raised his cap and waved us through.
They were the most expensive beers we'd ever had in our lives but they were massive and the snacks and the service were so good that we ordered another round.
After the Taj Mahal, Mumbai's Taj is the most photographed building in all India. We said that we'd make beers at the Taj, like bhelpuri on Chowpatty beach, shopping in Anokhi and watching the sunset over the Art Deco splendour of Marine Drive something we'd do every time we went to Mumbai - I hope it won't be too many years before we get to hang out in our favourite city again.
We've had a whopping great big tea tonight - a vegan Morrocan pasty, roast parsnips, peas, carrots, sprouts, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes - and I'm so stuffed I can hardly move. I might just be able to manage some rum!
Cheers, stay safe (and warm) and see you soon!
That is at least you, me and Jules outside in insufficient clothing to photograph recent sunrises!
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't quite petrified of flying I would love to visit the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel - so I do hope you get back there soon and I can enjoy it vicariously.
We're crazy fools!!
DeleteWhat a shame about your fear of flying. One of our friends paid for some kind of therapy to overcome his fear and it's worked. He managed to get to Iceland for his 55th birthday! xxx
I was curled up deep under the duvet for that sunrise - so glad you took photos! I was out walking today and yes it was bitterly cold - as you said say - cold enough to take your face off brrrrr
ReplyDeleteIt's been so cold! Under a duvet seems like a far more sensible option. xxx
DeleteWow, that is some color in the sunrise. Nice to see birds- someone posted they saw robins this weekend, but we truly have arctic temps so not sure how robins will fair. I love your Taj beer story and you working up courage to go in. I’m sure you looked glamorous!
ReplyDeleteOur robin is always around, if the food stocks are getting low he'll hop on to the windowsill and stare at me through the glass until I go out with his mealworms! xxx
DeleteWe too love the Mumbai Taj, most expensive round of G&Ts we'd ever ordered, but well worth it. Stay Safe. Lynette
ReplyDeleteHi Lynette! G&T's, you really did push the boat out! Isn't it a wonderful hotel? xxx
DeleteWhat a beautiful skylight no wonder you dashed out, it’s stunning. I’ve found myself embracing your wear, sleep, repeat challenge. You’re don’t it so brilliantly.
ReplyDeleteYour memories and photos of Mumbai are something else. I was chuckling at your reluctance to go in the hotel. Isn’t it spectacular.
I’ve been very melancholic myself today and need to pull myself up by my boot straps tomorrow xxx
I was amazed by those colours in the sky, it was so strange how they turned into yellows and greys within half an hour. If I hadn't taken a photo Jon would have accused me of making it up!
DeleteNow travel is illegal I'm going through my photos and realising how lucky Jon and I have been with our adventures over the years. I cannot wait for the days when I can go on 14 hour train rides, drink street chai or dodge sea snakes in the Arabian sea again! xxx
Thanks for the beatiful photo of the morning sky!.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm loving your new breton top, as I'm a huge fan of striped t-shirts under dresses!, You Rock It!. Your purple cape and matchy mittens and hat are so fabulous, this is a gorgeous colour combo with the dress!. Also loving the pinafore dress, a favourite of mine!, and your boots!.
Your photos of Mumbai and the magnificent hotel have put a smile on my face. This made me remember our own trips, as sometimes we also went into a luxurious bar after days living on sandwiches. Lovely memories!
besos
I loved that sky, I knew if I didn't take a photo Jon would say that I was exaggerating the colours! I needed proof.
DeleteI'm a definiate convert to Breton tops, they seem to work with all the patterns and prints I own.
Yes to being thrifty on your travels and then having a huge splurge in a fancy hotel! xxx
The morning sky was quite something , I can see why you dashed out to take the photo.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed sharing your memories of the Taj Mahal Palace , it is quite spectacular , loved your walk up that grand staircase.
WE've had some wonderful morning skies of late, Jill. I don't think I'd ever had the time to appreciate them prior to lockdown. xxx
DeleteWe had tea at the Taj Mahal many years ago when we were young and beautiful, it was the most wonderful place but I think with age we appreciate these things even more so I want to do it all over again, and more! - at the time I was more interested in the nearby market and in getting an ice lolly made from crushed ice done by a little man peddling a converted bicycle and pouring pink stuff over the compacted ice which was crammed into a metal mould and came out miraculously looking like a Lyons Maid lolly, as about 20 children were all crowding round watching me I only got one lick and had to give it away as I felt so guilty! I nearly got crushed in the rush and learned never to give things away unless you have plenty of them for everyone and are not near a main road as children will run across traffic from nowhere to get to you! I might have to dig out some of my old photos as feeling all nostalgic now! Anyway back to blighty - I do love your sheepskin hat, you only see the white ones on EBay usually and your hair is looking stunning, I have found I am going grey, I don't mind but it needs something doing..... Betty x
ReplyDeleteYou're right, we're quite nonchalant about these experiences when we're younger and not being able to travel long haul for so long we'll appreciate every minute when we get there again.
DeleteI bet you're talking about Badshah opposite Crawford market, it's been going since 1906 and their lassis are out of this world!
Jon was laughing at how grey my roots are now, they were fine before lockdown. If I was capable with hair I'd be tempted to add a few silver streaks through the length of my hair - bet you could do that easily with your skills and they'd look wonderful with your darker locks! xxx
That's a remarkable building and that staircase! Love the video :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I made my first crocheted hat! I'm tempted to try the mittens next. X
It's stunning, isn't it? I'm so glad we were brave enough to venture inside.
DeleteI'm excited that you made your hat. I need to have another bash at mittens, I've ordered some wool especially! xxx
That hotel looks awesome, I would have been in the UK a year ago, we started to get notifications from the Japanese government about covid 19 and we might have to cut our trip home short ( we did anyway) . A week later we were celebrating my birthday in gran canera and decided to fly home after that. It broke my heart. And Paul’s but we didn’t think it would go on for this long!!
ReplyDeleteIt’s my birthday on the 21st but it will be a much quieter celebration. No twin no family just us 6 annoying each other and ordering rip off pizza.
Love the hat but me and knitting erm do not go unless you want a lot of knots!!! I keep trying but it ends up in the bin !! I can’t even do origami as I don’t have to patience for it, the kids and Paul can , not me . Take care and keep safe.
We were into our fifth week in India when we got to Mumbai and the guest house owner, Mr Raj, told us that his regular Chinese guests had cancelled as they weren't allowed to travel. Before we left the UK Covid seemed to be something only affecting elderly people in China and like everyone else didn't really think too much about it. Crazy to think that a year ago today Jon and I spent time in three international airports, took two flights with hundreds of other people and nobody wore masks!
DeleteI like the sound of your birthday. We weren't allowed to see anyone when it was mine so it was just the two of us, a National Trust garden, a graveyard in the rain and some out of date pasta - still fun!
I can't knit and I was 52 before I learnt to crochet, you've got loads of time to learn! xxx
the purple ensemble is awesome!
ReplyDeletebut i love the look with pinafore dress and breton top too........
and handbags! i just realised that they´r victims of covid - at least in my case. with no trips to the cities, culture, events etc. i do not need them - on a casual walk i can store the necessities in the pockets of my clothes - on hikes the BW carries a backpack, for going to the office i use the same little bag since a year.......
vividly remember your report from the posh hotel!
xxxxx
Thanks, Beate! It seemed a shame to save that Ritu Kumar dress for the summer, a bit of layering soon warmed it up and made it weather appropriate.
DeleteYou're right, handbags are victims of Covid, other than our trip to Crete I've used the same two bags for the past year. xxx
Hello Vix, love the video! How brilliant that you went for drinks in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. We popped in one night when we were there (I bought some 'going out shoes' that day from Colaba market, as I only had tatty footwear and was worried about getting in!). I remember walking up those stairs but can't quite remember why we ventured up there. Is there a bar / club at the top too? Anyhow, as soon as we arrived the drinks stopped serving, so we went to some Bollywood Stars club instead, which closed as soon as we walked in, then we met some random Canadian folk and went for a drink on a roof terrace bar with them. Weird night. Beautiful red sky and really liking the Breton top layering. Lulu xXx
ReplyDeleteColaba Causeway is a shopper's paradise, isn't it? I stock up on my leather chappals there every two years.
DeleteIt's just rooms upstairs at the Taj as far as I know. I bet your roof terrace bar was on Marine Drive, that's where were always go for a late night beer! xxx
Love the video of you climbing the steps and the photos of India. I do hope you get back there soon.
ReplyDeleteI was teaching a live yoga class when my student suddenly stopped on Friday morning to look at the sky. I couldn't see it from the room I was in but she just stood open-mouthed.
Keep warm ad safe,
Jane X
So do we, Jane! It's been the first winter in 21 years that we haven't visited some part of India, I shall be even more excited than we usually are when we get the green light to return!
DeleteThe sky was amazing on Friday morning, I risked hypothermia just to photograph it! xxx
That sunrise is so gorgeous! Beautiful outfits, accessories and delicious food as always! I love reading about your memories from Taj Mahal Palace, what an amazing adventure!
ReplyDeleteHaving all this free time has really made me notice the sunrises more - Friday's really was beautiful! xxx
DeleteRed skies at morning, sailors take warning! We're waiting for the Big Storm to arrive here in the American Midwest. Preparations include sorting out layers to wear if the power goes out and planning comfort food menus for at least a week. Those parsnips, carrots, potatoes and peas next to a pasty inspire me to think in terms of a pot pie...
ReplyDeleteThat sounds rather scary, Beth! I hope your power holds out and that the storm doesn't turn out as violent as expected. I'm off to Goggle "pot pie" ...
DeleteYou look like you were born there, at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Vix! The picture looks like the hotel is your old stamping grounds from childhood and a place where you feel very comfortable. :-) ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI was so excited to enter that hallowed space Andrea. I remember watching the terrorist attack there back in 2008 and watching the hotel in flames. It was heartbreaking. xxx
DeleteWhat a lovely sky shot. You own so many fabulous pieces of jewellery, I love your collection. It is worth paying the price on the expensive beers just for the experience! I did that once at the Polo Lounge in Los Angeles, got to celebrity watch for the price of some very expensive rum and cokes :)
ReplyDeleteI agree about the expensive beer. We nearly bankrupted ourselves on the Moulin Rouge back in our 20s on brandies, we still giggle about it now. If we'd done the penny pinching travelling thing and just had water we'd have missed out on those memories! xxx
DeleteI'm still shivering at the thought you ran outside barefoot and dressed in just a vest and leggings! That sunrise was totally worth it, though.
ReplyDeleteThat purple Whetherall of Bond Street cape is a thing of utter beauty and looks absolutely fabulous worn with one of the sisters of my Ritu Kumar frock! Your Breton top - such gorgeous colour - looks perfectly at home worn with the Anokhi pinafore.
Sometimes it's hard to get one's head around the fact that it's been a year since things were starting to get out of hand. It seems to me the year has flown even faster than usual. It's hard to believe, as well, that the world as it is now is the same one as last year's, when it was possible to go into a hotel in Mumbai and sample expensive beers without giving it a second's thought! I am hoping with you that it won't be too long until you can do it all again! xxx
I think I must have been half asleep but I needed to capture that sky for posterity!
DeleteFriday used to be mum & I's regular charity shopping and pub date and I was dithering about that cape for ages - why I don't know, it was £5! She snatched it off me and said if I didn't get it she would so I made the decision and never looked back! It's been a regular fixture on my blog since I started blogging.
You're right, this time last year feels like a world away not a mere 12 months. A year ago today Jon and I spent 20 hours in three international airports on three flights, crammed together with hundreds of other people with not a mask in sight and then caught a train and took a taxi back to the house. What a difference! xxx
isn't it funny how photos with crowds in them look weird now?
ReplyDeleteAnd when you watch films and TV shows with groups of people! It seems like another world. xxx
DeleteAmazing bedroom and I love the Russian style! Amazing hotel too, god I miss travelling...
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can't wait until we're allowed to travel again. I shall push my way off the plane and kiss the tarmac! xxx
Deletegood morning Vix happy Monday. Boy lady do you look good in purple! love it on you. I must admit when you got the breton top I was not sure how it would fit in Vix style but it sure does! Loved the photos of India and I know you will get back there one day.... Lazy day yesterday but did manage to throw out er I mean file most of the in tray (no mean feat) First day in a week no snow so Phil might get a longer walk. I love your bags,I still have a little leather bag that I bought when I was 18!(no we are not saying how long ago that was!) Love the photo of you leaning over the balcony in the hotel and the specs look great! I am so overdue to get the peepers checked. hugs Shazxx
ReplyDeleteMorning, Shaz! I'm amazed how well the Breton tops fit into my wardrobe, it's a whole new ebay obsession now.
DeleteEven when you say you've had a lazy day you always manage to get stuff done. Tackling the in-tray is one of those jobs I leave until the vert last minute, good on you!
Doesn't it feel good not to be dithering with cold when you venture outside? Long may it last! How you had a lovely long walk with Phil.
I'm impressed that you've had a bag for so long. Have a lovely day & book an eye test! xxx
How lovely it would be to sit in that hotel bar right now, sipping ice cold beer and watching the world go by. I don't think we'll ever take going out for granted again.
ReplyDeleteThat gorgeous red sunrise definitely deserved to be caught on camera, even at the risk of frozen feet!
It's a very fetching purple Cape you're wearing. xxx
I keep thinking that, Sally! I'll be wriggling with excitement and pissed within minutes when I'm allowed back in a pub again! xxx
Deleteoooh! Thank you for sharing the pics of Mumbai's Taj. It's breathtaking!!
ReplyDeleteI must say that I love how you combine your Indian and Afghani dresses with other things! I always love seeing that vivid purple cape.
Good on you for learning how to crochet hats!! That is a seriously practical skill!
Gadzooks! The thought of running outside barefoot during our Canadian winters makes me shiver! I tried it once!! Never again!!
happy thrifting ;)
Thanks, my friend! I do enjoy mixing clothes that by rights shouldn't really go together, don't tell the fashion police!
DeleteI can't imagine running outside in your temperatures, I'm bad enough coping with the feeble -10°C we had to deal with last week! xxx
I bet you managed the rum! Astonishing red sky - brave you in your bare feet.
ReplyDeleteI loved your celebratory new pom pom hat. The rewear challenge is going very well indeed and I've loved all your outfits and accessories.
You will get to Mumbai, Vix, and you can run iup and down those stairs again; what a swanky hotel it is. Did you enjoy today's warmer weather? It was positively tropical compared to the last few weeks.
Take care
xxx
Thanks, Vronni! I do hop I get back to the Taj, I've resigned myself to the fact that it may be a few years before I do but there will be time when I'm running up and down those steps again and giggling at the astronomical price of the car bill!
DeleteIt's been lovely these last couple of days, hasn't it? xxx
Bravo to you for braving the cold in your bare feet to capture that gorgeous sky! That hotel in Mumbai is spectacular - no wonder you had always wanted to have a beverage there. I don't mind paying more for a drink or a meal in surroundings like that - it's an experience that you remember forever.
ReplyDeleteIt was worth every penny! xxx
Deleteoooh, I bet you were cold out in the garden without shoes on.
ReplyDeleteI went outside in the snow with my crocs on with bare feet and pajamas to put the compost out and to empty tea leaves onto the raised bed and it was SOOOOOO cold!!!!
Ah, I love that purple cape so much! It always makes me so happy to see it. I really like your Amor Lux top- such a nice shade. I ALMOST bought some new breton tops recently from Seasalt as I have a 50% teacher's discount which makes them £15 each (great for organic cotton) but I resisted and stuck to a rain coat as TRYING to only buy one item a month though I may cave as a birthday treat at the end of the month...not sure!
The hotel in Mumbai is astounding! Wow! Look at those snacks too!
I am always scared of going into posh places! When I worked at the Royal Academy of music, after a project one day, my boss took me into the Landmark hotel near Marylebone for a cup of tea so he didn't have to walk back to the Academy to have our meeting and could get straight on the train home. I was really scared but it was so amazing in there! Tea was SO expensive!
I'm loving your rewear challenge! I can wear tops more often being at home as I haven't sweated all over them after harried cycle rides and stressful altercations with children!
That morning sky had me hypnotised, I had to rush out and capture the beauty! I normally nip up to the compost bin in my slippers and exercise gear but last week I was getting fully dressed with a coat and a hat to do it.
DeleteYou are being very restrained with your purchasing (unlike me!) I bet the raincoat will be worn loads though and I think buying something with birthday money counts as a gift rather than a purchase - I'm such an enabler!
I was convinced they'd turn us away at the door of the Taj but they were lovely. The beer was expensive but those snacks were so good and it was such a wonderful place to sit. xxx
Ack. Behind again!
ReplyDeleteIn love with your wool cape and your pinafore - I'm glad you're enjoying your challenge! Doing a big one like that can really revitalize your creativity and imagination for outfits, and it forces you to try new things in order to get your clothes included.
I like those bags - the owl one is wonderful.
Aw, Vix, I've been doing the same, looking back at "what was I doing this time last year, when we were still freeeeee?" It's bittersweet.
It's so easy to fall behind with blogland, isn't it?
DeleteYes, I've never put so much thought into getting dressed, having to think a couple of days ahead sometimes just so I can include a certain garment. I'm already racking my brain over how to do a Doctor Who tribute for Kezzie's party and stay within my challenge!
I was photographing that owl bag wondering why!
Last year and waht we did back then seems like a different world, doesn't it? xxx
Aaaah the Taj! We didn't go in there, I had no idea it would look like that inside. I imagined it would be more minimalist, as so many hotels are nowadays. (Who are all those people who like booooring hotels!)
ReplyDeleteYou will get back to Mumbai, and have many more beers as the sun goes down.
We’ve had some fantastic sunsets and sunrises too.
ReplyDeleteThose beers were worth every penny, I can’t believe that was a year ago already. I hope you get to go again soon!
xx
