The Distancing Diaries - 12th & 13th February, 2021

Despite the cold I just had to run outside barefoot, clad in just a vest & leggings to capture Friday's blood red morning sky. I did my final Wii Fit workout of the week, filled the bathtub and utility room sink with water and gave the houseplants drink. With having the central heating on all week, the poor things were parched. After our breakfast Jon popped out to the post office, calling in at Morrison's on the way back for groceries.

I made a start with catching up with blogland and, when Jon got back, posed for a couple of photos before he dispensed with all his layers for the day and concentrated on sanitising the shopping & putting it away.

Wear:Sleep:Repeat continued with my Ritu Kumar midi dress, worn with a Wetherall of Bond Street wool cape bought from a charity shop twenty years ago, my me-made pompom hat, the beer mittens Liz had made me for my birthday and one of my eBayed Amor Lux Breton tops.

The details: 1970s French high-heeled wellies (jumble sale), silver ball earrings (Shilpa Silver) and vintage Kuchi tribal necklace (bought in Jaisalmer, Jan 2020)

After our lunchtime noodles I gave the bathroom a good scrub and mopped the floor, continuing down the stairs. Jon helped me swap the plants over so each had their turn. I caught up with blog comments and had the rest of the pizza for tea.

Later we watched the second half of the Shannon Matthews documentary we'd started watching the previous evening followed by Rebecka Martinsson: The Arctic Murders ( I prefer the dogs, Snoris and Tintin to the main character) and another episode of the Great British Pottery Showdown, accompanied by rum and cola. Despite the late hour I decided to mop the kitchen floor before bed. I do live life on the edge!

Jon was up first on saturday morning, he made tea and brought it back to bed where we lay and read until 8.45am. After he'd gone downstairs to put the sausages in the oven I stripped and changed the bed, loaded the washing machine and sat at the kitchen table painting my nails. We ate our sausage sandwiches accompanied by a mug of coffee marvelling at all the birds assembled on the feeding station and wondering where they all were on the day of the Big Birdwatch a fortnight ago!

Another day of sub-zero temperatures meant I had more layers than a layered thing under my vintage Anokhi pinafore dress...I do have a waist normally, honest! Wear:Sleep:Repeat saw the return of Friday's Breton top and yet another wearing of my trusty sheepskin hat.

The details: 1960s go-go boots (car boot sale), vintage Indian silk screen print scarf & white metal earrings (both charity shopped), Barry M's Ginger nail paint.

I know I keep banging on about it but I'm really enjoying my challenge to rewear a garment from the previous day. In normal times I'd have worn my new-to-me purchases immediately but now they have to wait until I can slot them into my outfits.

I photographed and listed some of the stock of vintage bags on eBay - longtime readers may recognise quite a few of these from my personal collection. Again I used the kitchen wall as a backdrop, I don't think I'd have had a face left if I'd taken the photos in the garden!

I haven't been further than the top of the garden for almost a week, I'm so excited about the arrival of milder temperatures in the next few days and the possibility of venturing further than the compost bin that I made myself a new pompom hat especially.

My new specs made all the difference. Repairing my Anokhi jacket and crocheting are a lot easier when I can see what I'm doing.

A year ago today I achieved a lifelong ambition, to have beers in Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and to run up and down the grand staircase recreating the scene from the Merchant Ivory film, Bombay Talkie.

Although we've visited our beloved Mumbai a lot over the years we'd never been brave enough to try and get into the swankiest hotel in all of India, expecting the doorman to take one look at us and send us on our way but, in 2020, we took a deep breath, made our way towards the front entrance where the comissionaire raised his cap and waved us through.

They were the most expensive beers we'd ever had in our lives but they were massive and the snacks and the service were so good that we ordered another round.

After the Taj Mahal, Mumbai's Taj is the most photographed building in all India. We said that we'd make beers at the Taj, like bhelpuri on Chowpatty beach, shopping in Anokhi and watching the sunset over the Art Deco splendour of Marine Drive something we'd do every time we went to Mumbai - I hope it won't be too many years before we get to hang out in our favourite city again.

We've had a whopping great big tea tonight - a vegan Morrocan pasty, roast parsnips, peas, carrots, sprouts, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes - and I'm so stuffed I can hardly move. I might just be able to manage some rum!

Cheers, stay safe (and warm) and see you soon!

  1. That is at least you, me and Jules outside in insufficient clothing to photograph recent sunrises!

If I wasn't quite petrified of flying I would love to visit the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel - so I do hope you get back there soon and I can enjoy it vicariously.

What a shame about your fear of flying. One of our friends paid for some kind of therapy to overcome his fear and it's worked. He managed to get to Iceland for his 55th birthday! xxx

Your memories and photos of Mumbai are something else. I was chuckling at your reluctance to go in the hotel. Isn’t it spectacular.

Now travel is illegal I'm going through my photos and realising how lucky Jon and I have been with our adventures over the years. I cannot wait for the days when I can go on 14 hour train rides, drink street chai or dodge sea snakes in the Arabian sea again! xxx

And I'm loving your new breton top, as I'm a huge fan of striped t-shirts under dresses!, You Rock It!. Your purple cape and matchy mittens and hat are so fabulous, this is a gorgeous colour combo with the dress!. Also loving the pinafore dress, a favourite of mine!, and your boots!.
Your photos of Mumbai and the magnificent hotel have put a smile on my face. This made me remember our own trips, as sometimes we also went into a luxurious bar after days living on sandwiches. Lovely memories!

  8. We had tea at the Taj Mahal many years ago when we were young and beautiful, it was the most wonderful place but I think with age we appreciate these things even more so I want to do it all over again, and more! - at the time I was more interested in the nearby market and in getting an ice lolly made from crushed ice done by a little man peddling a converted bicycle and pouring pink stuff over the compacted ice which was crammed into a metal mould and came out miraculously looking like a Lyons Maid lolly, as about 20 children were all crowding round watching me I only got one lick and had to give it away as I felt so guilty! I nearly got crushed in the rush and learned never to give things away unless you have plenty of them for everyone and are not near a main road as children will run across traffic from nowhere to get to you! I might have to dig out some of my old photos as feeling all nostalgic now! Anyway back to blighty - I do love your sheepskin hat, you only see the white ones on EBay usually and your hair is looking stunning, I have found I am going grey, I don't mind but it needs something doing..... 1. You're right, we're quite nonchalant about these experiences when we're younger and not being able to travel long haul for so long we'll appreciate every minute when we get there again.
I bet you're talking about Badshah opposite Crawford market, it's been going since 1906 and their lassis are out of this world!
Jon was laughing at how grey my roots are now, they were fine before lockdown. If I was capable with hair I'd be tempted to add a few silver streaks through the length of my hair - bet you could do that easily with your skills and they'd look wonderful with your darker locks! xxx

  10. That hotel looks awesome, I would have been in the UK a year ago, we started to get notifications from the Japanese government about covid 19 and we might have to cut our trip home short ( we did anyway) . A week later we were celebrating my birthday in gran canera and decided to fly home after that. It broke my heart. And Paul’s but we didn’t think it would go on for this long!!
It’s my birthday on the 21st but it will be a much quieter celebration. No twin no family just us 6 annoying each other and ordering rip off pizza.
Love the hat but me and knitting erm do not go unless you want a lot of knots!!! I keep trying but it ends up in the bin !! I can’t even do origami as I don’t have to patience for it, the kids and Paul can , not me . Take care and keep safe.

    1. We were into our fifth week in India when we got to Mumbai and the guest house owner, Mr Raj, told us that his regular Chinese guests had cancelled as they weren't allowed to travel. Before we left the UK Covid seemed to be something only affecting elderly people in China and like everyone else didn't really think too much about it. Crazy to think that a year ago today Jon and I spent time in three international airports, took two flights with hundreds of other people and nobody wore masks!
I like the sound of your birthday. We weren't allowed to see anyone when it was mine so it was just the two of us, a National Trust garden, a graveyard in the rain and some out of date pasta - still fun!

  12. Hello Vix, love the video! How brilliant that you went for drinks in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. We popped in one night when we were there (I bought some 'going out shoes' that day from Colaba market, as I only had tatty footwear and was worried about getting in!). I remember walking up those stairs but can't quite remember why we ventured up there. Is there a bar / club at the top too? Anyhow, as soon as we arrived the drinks stopped serving, so we went to some Bollywood Stars club instead, which closed as soon as we walked in, then we met some random Canadian folk and went for a drink on a roof terrace bar with them. Weird night. Beautiful red sky and really liking the Breton top layering. Lulu xXx

Sometimes it's hard to get one's head around the fact that it's been a year since things were starting to get out of hand. It seems to me the year has flown even faster than usual. It's hard to believe, as well, that the world as it is now is the same one as last year's, when it was possible to go into a hotel in Mumbai and sample expensive beers without giving it a second's thought! I am hoping with you that it won't be too long until you can do it all again! xxx

Loved the photos of India and I know you will get back there one day.... Lazy day yesterday but did manage to throw out er I mean file most of the in tray (no mean feat) First day in a week no snow so Phil might get a longer walk. Ah, I love that purple cape so much! It always makes me so happy to see it. I really like your Amor Lux top- such a nice shade. I ALMOST bought some new breton tops recently from Seasalt as I have a 50% teacher's discount which makes them £15 each (great for organic cotton) but I resisted and stuck to a rain coat as TRYING to only buy one item a month though I may cave as a birthday treat at the end of the month...not sure!
The hotel in Mumbai is astounding! Wow! Look at those snacks too!
I am always scared of going into posh places! When I worked at the Royal Academy of music, after a project one day, my boss took me into the Landmark hotel near Marylebone for a cup of tea so he didn't have to walk back to the Academy to have our meeting and could get straight on the train home. I was really scared but it was so amazing in there! Tea was SO expensive!
