What Happens When The Vintage Runs Out?

We get asked this a lot but I don't think there's much danger of that happening just yet.

What you see on the washing line is the result of just one car boot sale.

Although they aren't always this good, yesterday's was definitely something special. How gorgeous are these velvet dresses?

Three decades of jackets.

Classy vintage labels like Eastex & Dereta. Tell me I don't need another vintage cape in my life!
(Caz, the fur trim on the Eastex coat is fake, a bit more practical in the rain.)

An array of colourful separates from the 1960s through to the 1980s.

And the perfect weather conditions for laundering them.

I found this costume jewellery in a bag destined for the next jumble sale when we were helping the caretaker move some furniture at the church hall earlier this week and naturally bought the lot.

Our problem isn't finding vintage, it's finding the space to store it all.  Fingers crossed that we sell lots we trade at Birmingham's biggest vintage event at Sutton Coldfield on Sunday (details HERE).

See you soon!

  2. Sometimes I feel like we are running out of vintage here, at least at the thrift. I never see anything good anymore, it's quite discouraging! :)

  3. Oh the jewellery is beautiful! How much would the multi coloured multi strand pearl necklace be? xxx

  4. you will be selling 80's and 90's stuff soon. That must be vintage by now. Love the Eastex coats. We had an Eastex dept when I worked in Debenhams, Derby, many, many moons age. Like the blue coat but without the fur. That would be a bit uncomfortable if it got rained on!

  8. Amazing finds as always. I have sometimes wondered about that - but I guess there is always something "newly vintage" as it were. Wonderful finds with the coat and the cape!

  9. OMG that Eastex coat! It's like something out of a dream.

I doubt vintage is going to run out any time soon - though 30s and 40s is deffo harder to find.

  11. Wow. History on a clothesline. How wonderful! And the jewelry. A terrific find. You really are the fairy godmother of vintage.

  12. Good day at the office, darling! No, I don't think vintage will run out, and of course the goalposts move as time goes on anyway. Those 1990s floral dresses and clubbing gear that some sellers call vintage will get there eventually, give them another 10 years...
You always have the knack of finding really beautiful stock, which is why Kinky is such a success - look, a few comments here, and you've already got potential buyers for your costume jewellery! That's a lovely little haul of sparkle and colour, and I think you might just need that red cape actually (or I do!) Love me a bit of Dereta! The green velvet frock is especially beautiful.
Fab frock; gorgeous you. Hope you do well on Sunday.
    Love you! xxxx

  16. I guess in the future vintage will be classed as eighties or grunge! It moves on with supply and demand I guess. You cleaned up with that little lot and you never cease to amaze me with the amount you find. Happy selling at the weekend! xxx

  17. I think we will never run out of vintage, unless they invent clothes that recycles on its own, that would be dreathful because I think having a connection with clothes from another time is a wonderful experience that can teach us a lot.

Those velvet dresses are absolutely gorgeous!!!

  18. I thought of you today when I had a quick whizz round our charity shops - there were actually a few vintage 70s bits but not my size - I was swept back to Portobello Road, London in my teens as a spotted an original silk headscarf dress not unlike one I once owned - remember them? silk headscarves sewn together on a diagonal to make a swish hemmed skirt with pointy bits? - this one was all golds and beiges - wish it had fitted! I love the turquoise bits of jewellery in your finds, I am very fond of turquoise. Betty

  19. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Rebecca and I need to get ourselves to a good car boot sale. We haven´t been to go very far from Victor so it is just a matter of recycling our own closet, and it that gets boring, lol

  20. OMG, my pen-pal of 55 years, Sue Wale, lives in Sutton Coldfield. She was here in Kansas in 1976 and my daughter and I visited her in Bermuda in 1989. I love reading your blog.

  21. Because the trends change so much , there's not much chance of vintage running out . Some stuff has reached the price realms of the ridiculous, but for the most part there's always a new trend

  22. Well hunted, love. I do like those coats!
Nope...I don't think it will run out. Clothes will just age and be passed up the line to become vintage although I suspect the mass of cheaply produced shmutter it won't make it in to decades. If shell suits can be called vintage, anything can!
Have a fabulous day on Sunday.
    Loves ya!

  23. What a happy day!!! Gorgeous finds, and how can anyone resist such a beautiful red cape?! It's impossible! I think you need just one more, my dear! :) Lots of love and great weekend to you! xxxxx

  24. It never ceases to amaze me how much vintage you find on your trips to the chazzas and booties. Those velvet frocks look special, the green one is amazing, but actually it's the blue one I'd like to see on, it's such a lovely colour. I like the look of that middle jacket and of course that red cape is fab. Are you sure you can't be tempted?! Good luck on Sunday, hope you make a dent in it all so you get to see your beautiful dining room again! Xxxx

  25. As for running out of vintage, some of us work hard to make more charming vintage - just you wait for 20 some years! ;) Love xxx

  26. It might run out for anyone else trying to shop the same places as you! (hehehe)

I love the little donkey brooch, I'd definitely have bought that lot too.

  29. I find it incredible that you can find any vintage clothes at a car booty, never mind that amazing haul. Down here mostly it's crap people are trying to flog, I've yet to see any vintage clobber on a stall.
I've spied a few lovely things on your line and the Eastex coat is divine. Wishing you luck on Sunday, although you won't need it with that marvellous stock. x

  30. What a terrific collection! I really like the coats!

  31. I've actually really been worrying that the vintage is running out---I have to search pretty hard anymore to find anything earlier than 80s. Consequently, I have been buying whatever I see and stuffing it into totes. It ain't what it used to be out there...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh to shop right from your washing line! I love the velvet dresses. xox

    ReplyDelete
  33. How can you stand the awesomeness of your washing line!
I also love the lights above and the grass beneath, let alone the gorgeous model who always seems to be in your pictures ;-D
Maybe people think vintage is running out because they don't have your eye. But that's why you do what you do, so you can bring them to our blind attention! Xo Jazzy Jack

  34. Haha. when I saw the post title I thought 'Oh no, she can't be running out of cool vintage stuff.' But obviously there is no danger of that as you said. You have found some awesome stuff here. That green dress is gorgeous!

  35. My mum used to tell me that the place to begin apartment hunting in NYC was the obituary column... Not to be grim, but let us recognize the fact that as the boomers depart this life, they will be leaving behind not only their homes but the contents thereof. And I know from personal experience that not a few of those ladies of The Greatest Generation have been cherishing the best clothes left to them by their mama's, the flappers of the 20s and the sirens of the 30s. Anno domini, my dears, anno domini and hurrah for cedar chests!

Ah, Vix, that sweet little purple print dress with straps, white ric-rac trim and a placket front hanging on your mantel -- it's tiny enough to fit you, isn't it? But what's behind it reminds me of a granny apron! These were the summer cottons worn by my mum with white sandals or straw wedgies back in the 50s. She rejoiced in the freedom from slips!

  36. Hello dear Vix: First off, have a great time this weekend!
Secondly, oh my goodness - that green velvet dress is amazing - now only if I had the upper arms to go with it! xox

  40. Wowzer, that's quite a haul! We just don't get that amount of vintage in our local car boot sales. What size is the blue velvet dress?! xx

  41. You must have the most interesting clothesline in the neighbourhood. If I lived nearby I'd be regularly sneaking a peek over your fence to check out what you have going on there!

Have fun (and great success) on Sunday. xo

  42. Wonderful pictures filled with vintage treasures.
I'm actually surprised that I find so many vintage goods from my favourite eras on flea markets ... I suppose, it is just the right time, people -being 'young' in the 40s,50s or 60s- are leaving this world ... (I don't like to talk about dieing - when I talk about vintage goods). It is totally noticable, when I look in the local thrift shops ot flea markets, they are filled with furniture from the 50s and 60s, because the flats of 'old, recently gone' people got emptied out ...
... I also talk a lot to 'old'ladies on flea markets, that are selling their mothers hats and purses ... They know that their time is limited and they are afraid that their precious treasures get dumped after their gone. They want their precious hand-me-downs to go to people who appreciate the quality and beauty of those pieces. Somtimes they also like to share the story behind a little hat - worn by the mum to the theater - or favourite purse from the beloved aunty ... This is one little part, why I love buyng vintage on flea markets ... Stories :)
Haha, I know what you mean, when you talk about storing vintage is a problem!!!! In our new flat we have an actual storage room for our flea market/ online shops goods and goodies, the cellar is full, too. I hope, we won't turn into messies one day ... I see tendencies ... ;)

    Have a good trading weekend!
    xx

  47. I spotted some nice blouses on your line there missus. As for vintage running out, I don't think it will in our lifetime. I've got enough for a shop myself and now need to pass some on to make room for more haha.
Looking forward to seeing you at Stockport next week and having a rummage through the rails

  54. I always laugh at the same question or when people say they can't find anything and all the "good stuff" is gone these days because everyone is looking for it. It's not running out and it never completely will not in our lifetimes anyway. As for finding things I generally say to people if you're only looking in op shops for "vintage" you're limited yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm not sure why, but I'm oddly attracted to the studded and fringed leather jacket on you clothesline! I think you have more quality vintage still to be found over there than we do here. I'm just guessing but I think the Brits have more of a sense of preserving history, and not just throwing things out and tearing things down at the drop of a hat. Most of the stuff I see in "Vintage" stores here is from the 70's, 80's and 90's - the older stuff has been either tossed, fallen apart, or been scooped up by people who charge and arm and a leg for it in places like New York.

  56. FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRK! What an amazing haul!
You just won't find goodies like that in NZ. Just as well I don't live in the UK, my house would be bursting at the seams! As it is it's pretty tight!
I expect you'll do brilliantly at the next fair! Woohoo!

  57. Top haul there, Vix. That studded and fringed 80s jacket takes me back a few years...looks like something Bonnie Tyler would have worn - and a good thing in my books back in the day! Love all that jewellery too, how amazing to have brought all that. I'm sure you'll have no trouble shifting it all! xxx

  60. Good quality vintage at a decent price is the issue down this way like you say I don't think it will ever run out. And the scary thing is the 80s and 90s items will in a few years time be classed as vintage not for me mind I couldn't stand the 90s fashions etc. Hope you had a great weekend of selling, dee xxx

    ReplyDelete
  61. oh god i hope the vintage never runs out! well i guess it cant. cause there will always be people throwing out their old clothes and fashion years becoming older and popular again, like the 90s!

I hope those velvet dresses find an owner, that blue one it sooo pretty!

  62. You've both got it all down to a fine art and having so much fun at the same time. The jewels are gorgeous - what a lucky find! xx
