There's more to life than clothes, at least that's what Polly Piglet thinks.
She's worn the same coat every day for 9 years and we still love her.
But clothes are pretty special. A great dress is a talking point between strangers, the icebreaker in the Post Office queue, the reason you get served first in the scrum at the fruit & veg market or why the lady in the charity shop puts the good stuff aside for you. This maxi is one of those dresses. Its guaranteed to get me singled out for special attention no matter how mundane the mission.
But no matter how good the garment no one thing should be the focal point of an outfit. If it's worth doing then it's worth overdoing as Keef once said. So, despite the pretty ethnic embroidery and fancy sleeves, there's no excuse not to pile on the tribal tat,
the exotic leather chappals,
and add an antique Indian dowry bag.
Vintage maxi (belonged to ex-blogger Sabine's mother in the 1960s), chappals (jumble sale), tribal pendant & dowry bag (£2 each, last week's amazing car boot sale) |
SATURDAY Jon: Massimo Dutti shirt, 1960s wool trousers, tooled leather belt, vintage English-made cherry red DMs & vintage Rackhams blazer (all bought second hand) Me: Vintage Frank Usher maxi (Twist & Pout Vintage) & retro sunglasses |
This weekend was another vintage double, selling at a vintage garden party at a local school on Saturday and trading at Birmingham's biggest vintage fair at Sutton Coldfield on Sunday. We caught up with fellow traders, met old friends and made new ones (hello, Sue!), got sunburnt and windswept, existed on cheese sandwiches and sold lots of stock.
SUNDAY Jon: Turnbull & Asser shirt, vintage braces, 1960s textured nylon trousers Me: 1970s nylon beach set (sewn into a dress) |
We opted for tea in the pub with some of our vintage selling mates after the fair so we've got last night's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell to catch up on later. Can't blinkin' wait!
See you soon.

You've put it all together so well Vix. From head to toe a vision on blue. Looks like you had another fab weekend. See ya Sunday xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful dress, it's just lovely and the colour is gorgeous, you look fab ❤ Glad the weekend was a good one and Polly's fur coat looks a treat xxx
ReplyDeleteSo very beautiful dress! And those little but important things - sandals, pendant, bag - add even more charm to it!
ReplyDeletevix those dresses were made for you! no one, and i mean no one wears them better! you are beautiful inside and out lady! x
ReplyDeleteI remember this frock from a previous post, it's a beaut and it also gives you enormous knockers.... a winner all round I'd say!
ReplyDeleteI love dresses with lots of embroidery, and you really do it justice! Have fun at all the festivals! :)
ReplyDeleteOnly YOU!
ReplyDeleteWho else could so perfectly match sandals to such an amazing maxi?!?
I love that dress, makes me think of my Mum when I was growing up she used to wear ones like that all the time.
ReplyDeletethat is a beautiful dress and it looks like cotton, maybe with rayon? I'm allergic to polyester and nylon, lol, can't even wear a scarf with any of it, I get the most vibrant blisters that take weeks to heal if I wear even an elastic uncovered against my skin,,
ReplyDelete!
I'm always guessing what fabrics are, you've had a busy weekend, looks like so much fun!
LOVE this maxi! It fits you like a dream.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you did well at your shows.
Sounds like you do have a busy summer lined up!
I can't wait to see those wardrobe bucket list pieces you scored.
bisous
Suzanne
OHH i love that blue dress and the dowry bag , Beautiful x
ReplyDeleteBrilliant - I love you 'pile it one" and always look stunning. Jon's looking very fine as well. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, xo.
ReplyDeleteThat embroidered vintage blue maxi-dress is beautiful! I can easily imagine people taking notice of it. Your necklace and your blue nail and toenail polish are pretty and coordinate nicely with the dress. The patterns of Polly Piglet's coat are pretty so I doubt she's considered fashionable highlighting. I don't remember seeing cats wearing shawls in winter either. Jon's vintage Rackhams blazer is a handsome outfit piece and your vintage Frank Usher maxi-dress is pretty. I love the puffy sleeves and the green and yellow on white print is cheery. I see you had full rails of colourful and pretty frocks for the Vintage Village at Stockport. Best wishes for your success at those TEN vintage festivals!

That dress is insanely cool!!! I really really love it. And ahem-TARDIS blue. And Jon is definitely Matt-Smithesque in the braces and shirt! Loving the cool dowry bag too, how nice is that!!!! Ahrgh, am on my second train and realised I've left my umbrella on the first train and the sky is looking VERY black for my mile walk home!!!!!x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dress really flatters too!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dress!
ReplyDeleteWell, of course there is more to life than clothes, but since we all get dressed in the morning, we might as well choose clothing that makes us happy and makes the world a more interesting and beautiful place - as does that fabulous frock! It's a real beauty (and Fi's right - it has magical boob-enhancing properties, phhoaaar!)
ReplyDeleteThe decorated sandals, the exquisite bag, the fantastic jewellery - you're a vision, no wonder you get singled out!
You're both looking fab at the fairs too, and blimey, you have a madly busy summer of festivals, but I know you'll love every minute of it.
Love you! xxx
There are much much moore than clothes in life ... but clothes makes life fun ! You always looks so great !
ReplyDeletexxx
That dress is such a perfect fit, the colour is gorgeous and the embroidery stunning - what more could you ask for in a dress? Oh and its a maxi too - quadruple bonus! xxx
ReplyDeleteP.S. Monkeychild just looked at your photos over my shoulder and said "That lady is pretty!"
ReplyDeleteFor me, clothes and style are something that I indulge in my spare time to ... kind of relax, but ... it's not just fun. It can also be inconvenient because I really feel uncomfortable when it feels wrong. Style/clothes are my favorite cultural expression, so in a way, vitally important. You always appear confident in your choice of clothing. I admire that.
ReplyDeleteThat dress is just gorgeous. I do like blue on you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for your festival posts. They're so atmospheric, it's like being there. And I know you're going to some new ones this year too.
I'm also enjoying Jonathan Strange. I was nervous when it was announced, bu it's extremely well done.
Love, Annie xxx
Oh love your dress so fabulous !!! ,mind you I loved the other two dresses too ,glad your weekend went well best wishes Vix xxx
ReplyDeleteOh love your dress so fabulous !!! ,mind you I loved the other two dresses too ,glad your weekend went well best wishes Vix xxx
ReplyDeleteThis dress! Absolutely gorgeous on you, and the jewelry you wear is perfect. I too love to layer "statement" pieces, the more the merrier. Those shoes are wild! My only t r u l y vintage piece is by Frank Usher, I'm pleased to say. All your dresses are fab, and you as always look fab, and Jon is very dandy! Polly Piglet looks like a sister of our Bagheerka. Glad for your success, Vix! xxx
ReplyDeleteAnother stunning dress! Are there any colours you can't wear, Vix? The only colour I could wear amongst those gorgeous vintage outfits you are wearing is the navy, although I would kill to look good in that Frank Usher!
ReplyDeleteWithout sounding horribly creepy, I really want to touch that dress - it looks so soft. You both look terrific.
ReplyDeleteTEN festivals!? I cannot wait to read all about them! xox
the blue embroidered dress is a favorite of mine! perfect match with the chappals!!!
ReplyDeleteyou´r busy like bees while looking very glamorous! glad that you had success and fun at the fairs! wish you a fantastic festival season!!!!! xxxxxxxx
10 festivals??????????? In a little country, wow.
ReplyDeleteYou look like a right hippie in that outfit, like you stepped out of 1969
Strange and Norrell is getting very interesting wish it was on for longer.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, there's more to life than clothes for sure. And yet you can have such fun with them. I do love it when clothes start conversations and bring people together. That is such a beautiful dress and it looks so romantic on you, no wonder your knockers, I mean YOU get noticed in it. I love those chappals too. That Frank Usher is one of my very favourites, the colour, the neckline and those wonderful sleeves. You look lovely in it, so wonderfully slim. We started watching Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell last night, I'm hooked! Ten festivals?! Heavens above! xxxx
ReplyDeleteoh yeah! I absolutely agree!! a fabulous dress is better when worn with some fabulous bijouterie! and you look gorgeous wearing your maxis! such beautiful dresses and fab stall!!

Oh Vix, this dress is fabulous! I love it and the sandals. I am also loving the pattern and colours of the 1970s nylon beach set. 10 festivals sounds extreme - looking forward to seeing all the pics and reading all about it. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf I had a coat like Polly Piglet's, I'd wear it every day too. As the song says, 'Everybody wants to be a cat.'
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing about your festival adventures.
I think you will always be a talking point not only for the fabulous way you look but for your beauty and intelligence to. Love the dress and your signature jewellery looks amazing, dee xxx
ReplyDeleteI was going to refrain from talking about your boobs, but then Curtise mentioned them, so I figured it was alright ;). Holy Moly they look spectacular in that gorgeous frock!
ReplyDeleteLove that dress, and your accessories, as always, are perfect. I'm glad to here you sold lots of stock at the various fairs, and now you can get ready to hit the festival circuit.
If I was as pretty as Polly Piglet, I could get away with wearing the same coat all year round too!
what an absolutely fabulous maxi dress! I see why it attracts so much attention...and the accessories are wonderful as well...but I think the person who wears the dress plays a vital role in attracting attention;)
ReplyDeleteI also really like the other vintage dresses you shown us:)!!!!

Since I began following you, which is many years ago, I have a more robust appreciation for the maxi. Several vintage skirts have been purchased with you in mind.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear that your vintage fairs have been successful. Who could possible resist the quality of vintage and the two gorgeous people selling the stock.
Love the blue ring. Took my client to the hope house. it place that helps the needy with non food items.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
What gorgeous patterns and colors. The shoes and dress look as though they were hand made for each other.
ReplyDeleteNow, I thought that was some interesting smoke-able greenery growing behind you until I looked up close...nope, just your everyday domestic yard plant. ;)
That dress was made for you! What a great match with those shoes. I'm glad to hear the weekends selling went well. I look forward to living vicariously through you at the festivals! xxx
ReplyDeleteNo woman less like Mary Poppins could be more "perfect in every way" than you in this blue ensemble, Vix. You're perfectly lovely right down to your blue nails! And the little reticule is charming!
ReplyDeletePlease give little Polly an ear skritch for me. She greatly resembles my own dear departed Sophronia. May she live as long as did The Mother of the Multitude, who transitioned from feral to couch cushion at the age of 15, and ruled the house for another 5 years.
You totally rock that frock, what a beauty!
ReplyDeleteYour choice of accessories are awesome, I love your style. Polly piglet looks a right cutie. Xx
What a beautiful dress, I love how you've styled it with all of your jewellery! x
ReplyDeleteOh my, you two have some exciting times in your imminent futures! Exciting, but also a lot of work too, I'm sure. Of course you'll both look fantastic while doing it. Looking forward to hearing about all the festivals!
