Car Booty

The sun is shining, the fields are mud-free and it can only mean one thing, the mid-week car boot sales are back on.

Yesterday morning and today we've been out searching for choice bits amongst the heaps of dross; over-washed fast fashion, bootleg films and fags, huge piles of kids toys, food well past it's sell-by date and optimistically over-priced collectibles (chipped china, knackered cameras and tatty 1960s annuals). The warm weather brings sellers out in their droves.

I snaffled this vintage City Style cheesecloth midi dress for £1 yesterday and it was cooed over by loads of older ladies when I worn it this morning, all recalling having worn similar back in the1970s. I'm sure there's even a photo of me wearing one back in the long hot summer of 1976.

What else did we find? Are you ready for this? There's quite a bit.

Three vintage frocks at £1 each - 1970s C&A gypsy dress, 1960s futuristic lurex shift and a Spinney tiered maxi

1960s groovy perspex hipster belt 50p

Glenaire 1960s quilted bed jacket £1 - far too cute for bedtime!

1950s scarf shirt by Leda of Italy £1

4 x 1970s evening bags (the velvet one still has the original store tags still attached) 50p each

A lady gave me this 1970s macramé shoulder bag because she loved how I was dressed.

Another lady gave me these 1960s handbags for free.

Kitsch-tastic cheese board and Staffordshire Potteries canister both 50p

Siamese dancer £1

A bagful of 1960s braiding 20p

1960s cat's eye sunglasses 50p

Jon got himself a Mussolini apron for when he's cooking pizza (10p)

and this reconstructed tweed jacket for 50p.

Navajo-style fringed suede boots £1.50

 Original 1970s wedge platforms  £1

A terrible picture but this 1960s Cher-esque wool trouser suit looks great on (£1)

Cheesecloth sun dress worn with 1970s tooled leather bag (£2, Crest Foundation), wolf choker (50p, car boot sale), a heap of second-hand bangles and suede go-go boots

Now I've just got to make room for it all!

See you soon.

  2. Love, love, LOVE the scarf shirt. I swear my mother made an identical bag to the crocheted one! (in the picture below the macrame one.) Looking forward to see you wearing the lurex shift.

  3. Wow! The price was right on those handbags :)

Maybe you need to write a post on how you "make room for it all". I could use all the help I can get!!!

  4. Please take me carbooting! That is an AMAZING haul - favourites include the sunnies, the lurex minis and those fabulous bags (envious!) xxx

  5. Love the cheesecloth dress - I had a couple of cheesecloth blouses back in the day - and the sunglasses. Might have to check out our local car boot.

  7. What a fantastic haul!
I can well believe the Cher-esque trouser suit looks great on - looking forward to seeing you styling that up when the warm weather ends (so that'll be next week then).

Love your cheesecloth dress, and Jon's apron is hilarious. But the jewel in the crown for me is that utterly wonderful cheese board! xxx

  8. Another great haul Vix - really liking those four evening bags in particular, and what a great apron!

  9. That apron is the best. As my hubby would say about something that cool..."Titties and Beer!" (was that too rude to post?).

  10. Argh! It's that beautiful owl bag again! Many, many years in the future when you come to write your last will and testament please.. PUT MY NAME DOWN FOR THAT BAG :p

That dress looks so light and floaty, I just love the sleeves and the frilled hem - so pretty!

You scored massively this week! I love the Pocahontas boots and of course Jon's Italy themed apron specially purchased for pizza making.. genius! xxx

  11. Amazing haul as always Vix!! Loving so much of the stuff you got, you do seem to have the best boot sales and charity shops where you live.

I'm curious as to what items you decide to get rid of when you buy new clothes as per your 'one in, one out' rule of shopping, how to you choose?!

Oh, and I bought a waistcoat in a charity shop today for Wilderness Festival which I think you'll LOVE, I'll be sure to pose for a photo in it :)

  13. I think that might be the Haul of All Hauls, Vix! What a fantastic set of booty!
I love it all, of course, but especially the cheesecloth frock. Did you have one of those little tie-front shirts back in the 70s too? I did, a cheapie one off the market!
The dresses are all great, especially the 60s lurex one, the bags and the sandals and the belt and the Thai dancer and the sunglasses... Too much to mention! Jon's Mussolini apron is hilarious, he clearly takes his pizza making frighteningly seriously!
Great to see some sun and see your treasures.
Now - what's going to have to go to make some room? xxxxxxxxxxx

  24. I bow to your car-booty treasure hunting skillz!! WOW dod you make out like a bandit!! I'm loving the "cher" suit and lurex mini-dress!!
The yardsales (comparable to car booty sales here in the states) have been DISMAL. Some not even worth stopping the car and getting out (I can assess them just by what they have out--lots of toys and kiddie clothes--keep on truckin")

Love your outfit--I think I wore that dress in 1975!!! With a puka bead necklace and "buffalo" wedge sandal!! Ah the memories!!

The bag of 60's braid is amazing--you'll be able to "Vix" up lots of stuff!!

The cats eye glasses are pretty fab too - great colour (is it the photo, or are do they really have a red tone to them?). It would be so much fun to go to a car boot sale with you, but we might end up fighting over stuff ;)

  36. Coveting the cat's eyes glasses! You look darling in the dress, as usual. How I wish we had 'car boot' sales because driving all over to yard sales and garage sales and what not is hard on people and the environment. Also - it looks like a lot of fun and a lot of fabulousness!

    ReplyDelete
  37. What an epic haul! Was there anything left at the boot fair when you'd finished? Plus you can't beat cheaper than free!

Love it all but especially the apron and the cheesecloth dress. My first vintage dress was a cheesecloth one - it's awaiting a zip replacement! I love cheesecloth but I hardly ever come across it, despite lots of people telling me it was incredibly popular. A's mum says she had lots of cheesecloth dresses. Do you find it hard to come by too?
I've never seen coloured cheesecloth either. Well done and add me to the list of people who'd love to come car-booting with you!

  48. Ooh, I fancy that decanter of port in the middle of the cheeseboard! Yum. I WISH we'd been able to stop off in the black country when we were passing through. Still, a Plymouth to Edinburgh drive doesn't exactly say 'time to spare'...

  65. ooh so many lovely things, I especially love the owl bag, scarf shirt and the sunglasses, and the black wool suit, and the braid! The Mussolini apron is a funny find, why would someone think of putting Mussolini of all people on an apron? I remember having a cheesecloth blouse in the 70's and I loved the feeling of it on a hot day, everything else I possessed was probably nylon or polyester back then. xx
