Put A Sock In It - Vix's Guide To Big Hair

Vintage Tricel dress (Banardos), Fake fur collar (Remade from a jumble sale cardi)
Fancy a big up-do like mine? Here's how I do it:

1960's Crimplene Dress (Local charity fundraising stall), Vintage pearl chandeliers (Car Boot Sale)
  • Raid your underwear drawer for an odd sock that matches your own hair colour.
  • Stuff the sock with an old pair of tights.
  • Double over the open end of the sock.
  • Hand-sew the open part closed.
Nail Varnish is Barry M's Spring Green
  • Attach velcro to either end of the sock. If you're feeling lazy you can sew both ends together so that the sock forms a circle, but it's much easier to use if you can open and close the doughnut on top of your head.

  • There you have it, a hand-made doughnut - bigger than a shop bought one and for free, too.

  • Next, tie your hair into a high ponytail at the top of your head.

  • Secure the doughnut around your hair band.
  • Part your ponytail in the centre.
  • Ensure the doughnut is covered with hair and no fabric is visible and tuck the hair ends beneath the doughnut.

Ring ( From the gorgeous Sarah)

  • Secure with grips and attach an optional bow.
Hair bow (handmade by my dear Helga) 1960's dress (Banardos) Earrings (Xmas Present)

1960's leather trench (Cancer Research) Vintage velvet bow tie (Salvation Army)

This style works best with unwashed hair.
Faux fur coat (Salvation Army), Dollyrockers Blouse (eBay)

  2. Dearest Vix, that is inspired! Of course I would never have thought of making one. Even with my shocking sewing skills I should be able to knock one of those up. I just need to find a beige sock! Fab to talk to you yesterday and thanks for the advice - you were right about that post!! Much love, C xx

  7. Oh I love it! My topknot thing the other day was purely the result of scragging my hair up to go swimming so I was quite chuffed with the results considering. I bet this would produce MUCH better volume though!

  8. That is the coolest DIY hair trick I have ever seen!! You're like a magician! I have long hair like you (well, not as thick and pretty, but still, LOL) so I might just try this technique. :)

  23. Dear Vix,
You are the ultimate queen of 'waste not, want not chic'...I hope you are gathering all these tips somewhere, I can certainly see a best selling book in all of this...I'd buy it!
I used to steal my dads socks when I was a kid to make glove puppets...and the washing machine always got the blame for the sock shortage, hehehe!
I wish I had the hair to do this look but alas I am not as follically-blessed as you are.
You look fab in every pic my dear, bun-i-licious!
    Lot's of love,
    Jem

  25. Brilliant I must make one of those and grow my hair long again!!

  26. You are a totally ingenious woman!! I have to confess I never need those things my hair is ridiculously thick, but I agree stuff like that works on dirtier hair!

    ReplyDelete
  27. vix, i love this idea, and i will definitely try this on myself!!!! :D

  28. Jeaz I wish I could grow my hair out as long as yours. But it just doesn't work the longest I can get it is just below my shoulder blades and by the time it gets there it looks really thing and stringy the bottom 4 inches or so.

Do you have any hair secrets to get your hair so gorgeous and long?

I have made hair doughnuts. Your way might be alot better than the way I did it. But I did mine by cutting the toe tip off of a black pair of socks then rolling it from the top all the way to the bottom.

I love everything you are wearing in this post. Especially the Vintage Tricel dress & the faux fur coat, 60s dress and that gorgeous silver ring with the yellow accents.

  29. fab. I bought a doghnut ring a few days ago from boots to practise my victory roll but it was bloomin' expensive x

    ReplyDelete
  30. Very clever idea - I actually recently bought one for 5 quid in Boots and I'm not convinced that it's any good.
    You've inspired me again!

  31. I NEED to try this. My hair is getting ridiculously long lately. Thank-you for a wonderful guide xxx

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great tip! My hair is too fine for bun ring- I also use a sock (with the toe cut out) or an old wrist band. I coil/roll my pony from end to head over the tube, spreading it as I go. Works so well it's hard to un-bun!

    ReplyDelete
  33. What a brill idea - would NEVER have thought of that. xx

    ReplyDelete
  34. Aha! Genius tip. This makes me want to grow my hair again!

  52. if only my hair was as lovely as yours, vix! a lovely how-to, i wish my hair was long enough! do you follow carrie's blog, wishwishwish? she recently featured her own beehive tutorial on her blog which was so pretty. to be honest i'm not really fond of my hair, i literally just do what i can to stop it being frizzy and to hide my big forehead, hehe, so doing my hair is more of a chore than anything else. i long for smooth, non-frizzy, slightly wavy locks. sigh...
