Best Bar None

Vintage dralon tub chair (Car boot sale), Edwardian Indian rug (eBay)

Ever since I was a kid I've longed for a wooden globe drinks cabinet. Along with Jean Varon frocks and pineapple ice buckets to me they are the very epitome of 1960's cocktail party chic.

I spotted a vintage beauty in our local branch of Banardos' charity shop a while ago but, as I'm often accused of bringing home tat, I thought I'd run it by Jon first before splashing out. Surprisingly he was all for it and offered to pop into town and buy it but returned home empty-handed claiming that it had already been sold.

What do you know? The sneaky little monkey had actually bought it and squirreled it away in Gilbert (our VW camper) since September.

Best Christmas present ever? I'll let our friends decide at tomorrow nights' New Years' Eve party once it's stocked with tasty alcoholic delights.

Vintage Dollyrockers maxi (eBay), Cobalt suede boots (TopShop), Jewellery (India)

What on earth am I going to wear?

  1. Dearest Vix, I love that colour on you and the purple shoes!

I have always wanted a globe drinks cabinet and a pineapple ice bucket. There's a shop near me called Past Caring that you would love. They get them in quite a lot. I don't really have anywhere to put the bar but I will buy a pineapple next time I see one.

How brilliant John bought it for you! Have a fabulous NYE xx

  2. Oh how awesome, I love it when people do sneaky things like that for presents! These sell for about $500 here btw and are very hard to find. I'm sure you'll treasure it...AND find something to wear at the party...eventually!

  18. What a great Christmas suprise! My vintage cocktail cabinet was my graduation present and I love it. It hasn't seen much use yet though so I should probably put that right on my birthday. Just think of all the vintage glasses etc you can buy for it now. That's my excuse when I buy numerous sets of vintage shot glasses and the like x

  28. Yay! You're back! I hope you had an amazing time away.

Now, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those drink globes! They're so kitsch but somehow have a bit of a whiff of old school class. Good one on Jon stashing it away for you - what a hero. And what better time to debut it than at New Year. Have a brilliant night!

  29. Awesome! I would actually like a bar cart, but Mr D really wants a globe cabinet. And I'm with Christina, a pineapple ice bucket is on my list as well. I have a hard time deciding whether to go for 50s/60s tack, or 30s glamour, I am constantly being torn in two directions.

  47. i smiled all the way through reading this post, how wonderfully sweet of jon! the cabinet is beautiful.

my mum did that to me too this year, hiding away a present (a pair of denim and velvet jeans. size six, but they fit me like a dream!) after saying it was out of stock, though she only bought it a couple of days before christmas. i did have a little idea that's what she had done, hehe. i was rather good at acting surprised on christmas day though. bless my mum. xx

  48. Dearest Vixy,
you are blessed to have such a fabulous fella.
I'm not sure if Mark would have been able to keep it a secret from me for that long, I think he'd be too excited, so well done to Jon for amanaging to squirrel it away ;)
I can't believe the prices that those plastic pinapple ice buckets are fetching on eBay nowadays...BONKERS!
I spotted one in a charity shop a few years ago but decided to leave it behind despite the fact that it was only a measly quid...don't you just hate when that happens.
Och, well...next time I will know better.
    ...xXx

  49. I love it when partners do things like that! Over the years I've been given a green, velvet 60s egg chair; a 60s Raleign Shopper bike and - this Christmas - a Tretchikoff Zulu Girl print. All of which have been hidden around the house or garden shed for months and I've never noticed! Just found your blog and really enjoying it. Happy New Year! Emma x
