Outta Sight

Hello! I'm currently trying to stay out of the way of the grabber dropping off the building supplies needed to lay the foundations for our new shed. Keep everything crossed that the weather plays nice and brickies Johnny and Scott can get it finished this week. With our new super shed, we can get rid of three of our existing sheds (not the Kinky Shed, that's the black one in the photo below)!

Despite the grey skies, I was sweltering on my way back from our morning swim and walked home bare-armed.

My dress, an Indian block printed cotton maxi with a quilted bodice and Kantha stitched hem was originally from Monsoon and used to belong to Nikki.

I spotted this tooled leather bag in the £2.99 charity shop last week, I thought it was vintage but discovered an Accessorize tag inside when I got it home. Vintage or modern, I'm a sucker for a bit of tooled leather.

Yesterday I wore an old favourite, this tissue silk 1970s kaftan, bought from eBay in the days BC ( before COVID). As well as Greece, its travelled across Rajasthan and spent time in Delhi, Mumbai and Goa.

Since I rekindled my love for swimming three years ago my style has evolved into something more casual. These days I'm all about comfy footwear and easy on, easy off kaftans, no faffy fastenings, belts or underskirts required! I scored the red cotton one on the end for a fiver last week. I think its made for a giant, I need to lop about a foot off the hem to make it wearable!

This handmade suede corset was a charity shop find last year and was probably made by a local fashion student what with Walsall being the centre of the UK leather industry since the Industrial Revolution.

I was saving it for the festival season but love how it looks worn over my Ayesha Davar recently redyed maxi dress. My 1960s Canadian copper and turquoise pendant was my Mum's (I also have the matching cuff) and my lovely friend Sheila, has its twin. Sheila and L lost their beloved cat, Vizzini, last week. Do keep them in your thoughts, us animal lovers know how hard it is.

I seem to be selling more than I'm acquiring lately which is a good thing, I suppose. New (to me) additions include this marvellous Moroccan tagine with a cast iron base for £7.50 . It's the first purple one I've seen and the veggie tagine Jon made in it was delicious!

I'm always on the hunt for strappy cotton maxi dresses which I can layer up for summer. This Indian-made quartz pink "Santorini" maxi is by Californian luxe label L.Space was £5. I love how well it goes with my turquoise jewellery and it's perfect with several of my sari wrap tops (and gorgeous on its own!)

This Daughters of India maxi dress wasn't cheap but I couldn't stop thinking about it and after some negotiations with the Vinted seller I pressed the buy it now button (and subsequently sold something of mine for same price, technically making it free!) It's on their website for £146 (not the price I paid!) DoI is based in Byron Bay and makes such beautiful block printed clothes, it's probably better not to look!

I'd not heard of Elena Ferrante* before I picked up this set of books from the clearance charity shop on Sunday morning. According to The Guardian (HERE) the critically acclaimed Ferrante is a bit of an enigma. I realised when I got home that this is three quarters of a quartet. Hopefully the final volume is in the shop and I missed it. I'll go and have another look after my swim later in the week.

*I've since discovered that she also wrote The Lost Daughter, which was made into the hauntingly sad film starring Olivia Colman a couple of years ago.

I'll leave you with the boys...one indoors and one outdoors, although I don't think it'll be long before Gordon's got his paws firmly under the table, Jon actually picked him up this evening!

See you soon.

  1. Daughters of India, very pretty, not unlike Naked Generation. Your silk kaftan is still as beautiful as ever that was such a find (I remember it was on ebay all creased up, seller was selling for an auntie and said 'could do with an iron' ... well worth getting the iron out for!). So many books! you must read at least one a week -- Im currently on Dishoom (library). Betty

    1. Hi Betty! That silk kaftan has undergone a few more repairs in recent years but I still love it to bits. If that seller had done her homework and goth iron out who knows how much it would have sold for!
That Daughters of India dress looks so much like the one that Naked generation are selling, they do have some remarkably similar stock! I bet that Dishoom books is a good read and probably leaves you feeling hungry! xxx

  3. Sympathies to your friends on losing their puss. We are still missing our lovely old girl Bo, the best puss ever. Your two boys are looking great as are your clothes as always. The quartz pink dress is gorgeous. Hope the new shed goes well. Regards Sue H

    1. Oh Sue, I didn't realise you'd lost Bo, I remember you mentioning her in your comments. I still tear up when I look back at old blog posts of the cats I've loved and lost over the last 16 years. xx

  4. Ferrante is a fabulous writer. I'm not surprised she keeps a low profile considering the fact she has written about mafia. La amica geniale series (Is it translated as My ingenious friend? I can't remember ) is on Netflix.
I love your vibrant manicure and matching rings. Love the suede corset as well!
Congrats on the Indian maxi dress, it's gorgeous!

  5. Hello
You look divine in this look as you return from the pool. Your outfits are all very unique and show the delicate personality you have. I'm one of the Ferrante lovers, so I'm looking forward to hearing what you think! Your kittens are beautiful! And so is your blog! Hugs

  6. I bet Gordon is living with you in the next month to 6 weeks. Miss Sheva is lying collapsed across the back of the sofa, after being out all day, as naughty Mum and Dad were out at a funeral and she wouldn't come in before we had to leave. Xx

    1. How neglectful of you both, leaving Miss Sheva to her own devices! I'm in William's bad books, I accidentally locked him in the Kinky Shed earlier, I was on my way up the garden to peg out the washing and heard his pitiful cry! xxx

  7. Come on Gordon! Make that step indoors. You'll not regret it :)
Your recent acquisitions are beautiful, Vix. I especially love the Santorini maxi - absolutely gorgeous!
Sending lots of love to your friends on the loss of their beloved Vizzini. Xx

  8. Once again loving your dresses, your style is very attractive.
I loved the Elena Ferrante books, such an enjoyable read. The last part is essential, hope that you find a copy. They made it into a very reasonable TV series, I have yet to see the final one though.

    1. Thanks, Carole! I found a rave review in The Guardian about the series based on the quartet, I think I shall watch it after I've finished reading the books (hopefully I'll track down that final book, there's always Abebooks if the charity shop fails me!) xxx

  10. You certainly have a very well-traveled wardrobe! I can't wait to see how your shed turns out. A friend of mine built his to mimic his house, and then decorated it inside and out (and it is still a functioning garden shed), with a Harry Potter theme. Here's a link for it. I thought you might enjoy seeing it as you are in shed mode too:

    1. Hello Alex! I often wonder how many countries my clothes visited before I bought them! So many of them were made in India in the 1960s and may have revisited their country of origin several times.
I've never read (or watched) anything to do with Harry Potter but that shed is incredible and the English Cottage garden planting makes me weak at the knees, it's my dream garden! xxx

  11. Hi Vix, such gorgeous kaftans and in silk too! Beautuful colours all hung up together. I love a bit of vintage suede too. As a child my mum bought me a groovy patchwork suede skirt with poppers down the front. Very 70s. I still love that style! I particularly like how you have put the sari wrap top over the pink sundress too to get more wear out of it. I like to wear my floaty dresses/ skirts in autumn and winter too. I am meeting a friend for lunch today at a little independent café where they do a delicious homemade French onion soup . Then we will have a good rummage around the charity shops together. She tells me her other friends don't want to do this as it is not their kind of thing. More treasures for me then!

    1. Hello Alysia! I get an inordinate amount of pleasure from getting my clothes out of the wardrobe and admiring them, are you the same? That silk one is in constant need of repair but I love it to bits! Suede patchwork is just so 1970s, isn't it? Your Mum sounds like a woman with taste.
Those sari wrap tops are so useful, they really help extend the life of summer clothes and are a more glam alternative than a cardi when the weather can't make its mind up.
Good company, tasty food and some charity shopping sounds like my perfect day. Isn't it great to have like-minded friends who enjoy the same things? I hope you found some treasure! xxx

  12. Keeping my fingers crossed all goes well with the construction of the "super shed"! What a relief to hear, though, that the Kinky shed isn't going anywhere ...
You definitely are the Queen of Kaftans! The suede corset is stunning and I love how you wore it layered over the re-dyed dress. Fabulous new purchases too!
How exciting that Jon was able to pick up Gordon. You'll soon be a two-cat family again! xxx

    1. Thanks, Ann! It's coming along nicely, well it was until they ran out of cement, Jon's got to dash to the DIY store to buy more as neither of the builders drive! Yes, the Kinky Shed's safe although U did manage to accidently lock William in it for an hour this morning, I've had to bribe him with Dreamies for forgiveness! xxx

  13. So many beautiful kaftans, I think that the tissue silk 1970's is my favourite and it looks lovely on you. And Gordon getting closer to being a indoor chum of William ... I see many lovely adventures for the two of them. So sorry to hear of your blogging friends loss, it's hard to be a cat-less house after so long. :-(

  14. So many lovely dresses. Very inspiring..as always. All the best to the project. Adoring all the lovely things... Such amazing spring looks and I love the rich history you have in your post as well. Wishing you much happiness everyday. So glad you are here.

Thanks so much for your comment. It is hard to say if it's "just me" or not with the many conversations I've had over the years. Sometimes, I feel some people are just drawn to me to tell me anything. Maybe this is what happens being a library clerk. Sometimes, you think I was a bartender, instead. Of course, sometimes, I just push it to see if the reader will like it or not, too.

  15. HI Vix, Shelagh here, I just wanted to say I love your pink dress it is beautiful, if you ever decide to list it let me know first plz!! Also I'm so glad you will be a two puss family soon, he will be a very lucky young man! I hope the shed goes well. Finally, I read your post and just thought, "how lucky are we that Vix is generous enough to share her time with us", only to find that others said the same. Your blog is fab, by far my favorite to read. Shelagh XX

You are sweet! I'm inexplicably excited about the shed and being able to get rid of the three tumbledown horrors elsewhere in the garden, all the more space for planting! xxx

  17. Aw, thank you for the kind mention of Vizzini's passing, Vix. I love seeing your William doing a super-kitty pose, and Gordon lurking in the garden (can't believe Jon picked him up - cat whisperer!). And appreciation for the link/shout-out re: "our" necklace. It's not Canadian (although I am, and bought mine in Canada) - it's be Bell Trading Post, which sold along Route 66 in the US during the 1960s. Many of their pieces were made by US Indians.

You have become a Caftan Woman! I love the tissue silk ones. I'm hoping it gets hot enough this summer for me to swan about in my two!

I read "My Brilliant Friend" years ago, but could not get into the TV show.

    1. Hi Sheila! I could think of little else but Vizzini, you and L all weekend, I know how hard it is. Jon really is the at whisperer, Gordon even rubbed against his legs earlier.
Interesting about "our necklace", Mum always called it her Canadian set as her ex-boyfriend bought it back as a gift when he travelled around the US and Canada in the 1960s, Bell Trading Company sounds like somewhere that some incredible pieces, I might have to look on Vinted and see if anything pops up.
You've got some groovy kaftans, let's hope for a summer warm enough to wear them - or a few pool parties! xxx

  19. Hi Vix. I'm always amazed at the fab bargains you find. All those beautiful dresses. In my hippy--ish dreams I'll have a wardrobe full of Indian block printed floaty dresses and faux suede handbags with fringes, plus armfuls of bangles. I suppose that's because my fashion tastes were formed in the seventies, by Top of the Pops and my stylish cousin's hand-me-downs. Lovely to see the cats. Val x
