It's Good Friday and therefore a public holiday in the UK which, if you're not religious or someone who gets holiday pay, is little more than a minor annoyance. As they're council-run, the swimming baths are closed today so we had to swap our Friday session in the big pool (below) to Thursday. On Fridays the entire pool is open for public swimming but on Thursday its lane swimming only. There's two speed options, medium or fast, and, as everyone keeps telling me what a strong swimmer I am, I opted for the fast lane and to my delight I was able to keep up with the female powerhouse swimming alongside me, clocking up a mile before our Spoons breakfast. This probably means sod all to most of you but to me, who has never in my fifty-eight and a half years on the planet considered themselves in the slightest bit sporty, I feel like I've been reborn!
Anyway, on to the rest of the week. After a warm-ish day on Tuesday, Wednesday was bitterly cold with a cruel east wind. We headed over to Birmingham to visit our regular charity shops and, just like when we'd last visited, came back laden with some fantastic vinyl...vintage and modern. What do you think, Stephanie?
Like any human in their right mind I already own Back To Black on CD (and had the privilege of seeing Amy Winehouse play live several times) but obviously vinyl is far superior ...and this is the original release, not one of the many later reissues.
It's quite unusual to find contemporary vinyl in the chazzas and Jon soon snapped up 6Music indie favourites, Glass Animals & Bombay Bicycle Club.
I absolutely love Shawn Mendes' Señorita but as this isn't the later deluxe pressing of this, his third album, it's not on there. However, what we did discover, tucked away inside the sleeve is an official signed photo, maybe the previous owner went off him. Can you see Gordon? He's making himself very comfy.
I couldn't resist these Orla Kiely-inspired earrings. Although I'm all about big earrings I wear studs when I swim.
Jon splashed out £3 on a shirt which matches our bedroom wall beautifully. It was originally from Joe Browns who make some great menswear and homewares but the women's clothing leaves a lot to be desired.
Yet again I wore my embroidered velvet Naked Generation "Amber" dress, I still can't believe my friend Annie spotted it on Vinted for £12. The wind was playing havoc with the hem when Jon took these photos, I'm amazed I managed to keep my hat on!
1 cup of mixed seeds & dried fruit
Half a cup of demerara sugar
Three-quarters of a cup of coconut oil (melted)
Half a cup of golden syrup
Method:
1. Line a 8 x 8 baking tray with greaseproof paper.2. Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir until everything is incorporated.
3. Transfer to the baking tray and level with the back of a spoon.
4. Cook at 180°C for 17 - 20 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown
5. Leave to cool in the tray for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Once cool slice into bars.
Have a fabulous weekend whether or not you do the Easter thing. See you on the other side!
I love that you're embracing just your physical health and strength in your own terms and for yourself. I grew up a team sport player and as I'm old now, trying to add more individual physical pursuits like swimming, biking, yoga, but no running. I think we'd call those flapjacks homemade granola bars or cereal bars. They look delicious.
ReplyDeleteHi Sam! I think things are (thankfully) changing now but when I was at school sport was very much an afterthought, something we were made to do with no real joy or enthusiasm and once we left we never participated in it ever again - I still detest hockey and netball, the two sports were were forced to play. You were an active woman, I wonder if that contributed towards your knee issues?
DeleteThose flapjacks really are delicious, in fact there's hardly any left now...oops! xxx
I was a fast pitch softball catcher. No doubt that added to the knee deterioration.
DeleteI hade to Google softball! It looks very energetic, a bit like our rounders but the rules see a lot more complicated! xxx
DeleteIt's so sad when an old business goes tits up, nasty cheap imports have a lot to answer for. I agree totally about Joe Browns, the fabrics used to be wild and colourful ,now they look like M&S duvet covers! Now about this shed, will it be used to house sulking other 'alves? or is that just us? hehe. Plus he does emerge from the shed with lovely shelves etc ,that he makes me. Have a splendid weekend filled with love and colour x
ReplyDeleteHello Lisa! I know, its really sad that that Royal Stafford's gone. I think those mugs started off in TX Maxx and they donate their unsold stock to Cancer UK, well worth a trip if you've got one nearby.
DeleteThat's so true about Joe Browns womenswear resembling M&S duvet covers, from hip and happening to granny's bedroom. I remember them selling gorgeously chunky Mexican silver jewellery for really good prices back in the 1990s.
I think the new shed will be a refuge from me, he'll probably wire up a telly to stop me moaning about his choice in viewing (Murder in Paradise, Star Trek!) You're very lucky to have a skilled chap like yours.
Have a fab weekend! xxx
good for you on the newfound athleticism! me too. better than ever!! love the tiny earrings. maybe you could wear in your new 2nd holes when they heal. xo, k
ReplyDeleteIsn't it brilliant to embrace sportiness? I absolute love this new found energy!
DeleteThat's a great idea about wearing the other earrings in my new piercings, they'd sit well next to some big silver hoops. xxx
I'm not the slightest bit sporty either, so perhaps there is hope for me yet ... I've made a start by wearing trainers (if only because I pulled a muscle in my back last week).
ReplyDeleteYou and Jon are always finding the best things in the chazzas! I can't believe Jon found another batch of great vinyl - nothing doing in our chazzas - and I'd picked up that shirt for Jos as well.
How lovely that your builders are bringing you gifts! As for the marks in the cement, was it William or Gordon, I wonder? William is definitely looking like butter wouldn't melt!
As always, I am loving all your fabulous outfits, the velvet Naked Generation dress and the Mohanjeet, Paris maxi skirt with the embroidered linen jacket being firm favourites! xxx
You never know, Ann, you might discover a hidden passion for cycling or power walking wen you've retired! I'm sorry to hear about your back, its very wise to wear trainers - I'm wearing mine more and more lately!
DeleteThe charity shops were putting all their vinyl on eBay at one point but I think they've decided its more trouble than it's worth so there's boxes of it back in the shops again now, mind you most of its the usual Max Bygraves, Jim Reeves and Hammond Organ nonsense! xxx
The outfit with the Amber dress looks sensational. The boots and hat match the dress perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThe photo of William is great <3
Thanks so much! xxx
DeleteI really envy your swimming ability. I'm more of a slow lane swimmer, and that's only if get a rare opportunity to actually go swimming these days. I read somewhere this week, just how important it is to keep fit as we get older - You're positively thriving, I'm trying my best. Those flapjacks look amazing! X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jules! You do pretty well with your fitness what with walking, cycling and running. You're right though, we need to step up as we get older, even Jon's a convert. plus its a great excuse for gorging ourselves on flapjacks! xxx
DeleteI would've assumed you a "strong" swimmer! Great vinyl finds -- but Ted Nugent would get burned in this house as he is a serious fan of the orange idiot...
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing you can find so many great dresses -- and they work so well with your hat. Finding that style here is in a thrift is not easy at all.
As for your cement, good for William! If he hadn't put his paws in it, I would think you'd need to take him over for an imprint. Whenever we have any cement work done, I drop in a coin with the current year and take an imprint of our current pet. It's our time capsule!
The pool has been busy this week because school is off. One plus is they normally shut part of it down in the afternoon, but when school is out it is open all day. The tradeoff is you have to deal with children...
Thanks, Alex! People keep telling me what a good swimmer I am but when I'm in the big pool I get imposter syndrome. We always worry that the pool will be overrun with kids during school holidays but as we go early we miss all the madness.
DeleteHow ill-judged of Ted Nugent! I remember Kanye West supporting the orange man baby at one time but I still think Late Registration is one of the greatest albums ever made and he's got mental health issues so I shall overlook it!
It did make us laugh that William's immortalised himself in the cement. He's such a flirt, he keeps hanging around the builders, rubbing around their ankles and shouting at them, they're besotted with him. xxx
I love ELO it reminds me of dancing round the living room with my dad. He loved that band so much. While I have been here I did get some records goodley and crème, an ancient billy joel and fairground attraction which has perfect on it.
ReplyDeleteI dodged cat Steven’s as I don’t agree with his religion. My dad even gave me some of his Japanese 80s pop I love that stuff.
Those disco mugs I have to have them. I love old music. I don’t mind new but I don’t agree how they get involved with politics. I used to like chapel roan until I found she was an industry plant and doesn’t like kids!! I have just found out i have autism type one and ADHD so I am trying to get my head round this, we don’t celebrate Easter . But we are in the UK. So Sunday dinner and a beach walk tomorrow!!
Hi Alli! ELO - one of Birmingham's many great bands. I walked across Jeff Lynne's star on the Broad Star Walk of Fame when I was in Brum last week. Billy Joel was a great find, I've definitely got FA's Perfect in my singles collection and probably a few Godley & Creme numbers although they weren't very cool when I was a kid, it was the stuff your mate's dad listened to!
DeleteI adore Cat Stevens, he's a truly wonderful human being.
I'm more than happy for musicians to share their political viewpoint - as long as its similar to mine. I remember The Specials playing Cornbury and yelling F*ck the Tories which incensed all the posh folk!
Enjoy your holiday! xxx
Did you see a rat!! My friend did when she was visiting her daughter who is studying at the university there. She didn’t half scream!!!
DeleteNo! Not a rat to be seen or any piles of rubbish, it's mostly the densely populated suburbs that are affected, not the city centre. Mind you, I think rats are quite cute! x
DeleteAw, Bad Company, now that brings back memories! I swear that dress was absolutely made for you. So glad you got it. You really suit those autumnal colours but then you'd look great wearing a tattie sack, as we say up here! If you rub Buddah's tummy it's supposed to bring you good luck! your swimming pool looks inviting. I'm afraid the sight of me in a bathing costume would have everyone running for cover at mine these days!!Have a good weekend.xxx
ReplyDeleteThere's some classics on that Bad Company album.
DeleteI'm so happy with that dress, it's the first thing I reach for on these cold, blustery days. I owe you big tie for spotting it!
You make me laugh about you in a swimsuit, I don't believe it for a minute! xxx
How exciting to have all those records in your collection! Most of which I have never heard of ha ha! I rarely listen to music. Your pool looks really nice, ours is similar but full of elderly women who walk halfway up and down in a line taking up the whole pool and chatting sometimes. I try to get the lane swimming sessions when possible, Im a medium speed, just about managing somewhere around 30-40 lengths if it isn't too crowded. Love the ginger velvet dress, NG are fabulous, I treasure my skirt and top from them. Flapjacks look yummy, Im making cakes for family visits. Like you Easter is not my thing, my family are/were pagans over many generations and used to find 'the religious stuff' annoying. I like Jon's shirt. Betty :)
ReplyDeleteHi Betty! We've got a ridiculous amount of vinyl, we both got into music when we were eleven and almost everything we ever bought! There's quite a lot of duplicates as Jon & I have similar tastes but we could never part with any of it!
DeleteOur smaller pool, the brine baths, has a lot of what we call "the floating islands" those of a certain age who just stand in the middle chatting (usually men!) luckily the gala is 7 foot at the shallow end and 13 at the deep end so everyone who used that pool just uses it for swimming! Jon's a medium speed - he used to swim for the county and regularly beat Walsall's Olympic swimmer until music & women got in the way.
I love your NG purchases. Do keep your eye on Vinted as they do occasionally pop up - like the dress!
I find Paganism far more interesting than Christianity. xxx
Without the photos I would have wondered if this really WAS you. Jogging, trainers ... and COOKING. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI daren't make a tray of flapjacks I'd just eat them all. Oh, and look at William stretching out all pose-y style for you, he is gorgeous.
I don't know what's happening to me!!! Those flapjacks didn't last long. I had to laugh at the recommendation of keeping them in a tin for up to a fortnight, who in their right mind does that?! xxxx
DeleteGood Friday is a beautiful and very special day for Christians to acknowledge and remember the death of Jesus. I like those Disco coffee cups. I grew up in the Disco era, so I can relate. You look nice in your orange dress, hat, and boots. I've always liked vintage things too.
ReplyDeleteLovely to meet you. We were in Kefalonia on Good Friday last year and it was lovely to see the Greek orthodox traditions. xxx
DeleteBlimey Vix, you'll be running in the London marathon next. I haven't got a single sporting cell in my body. I'd do the Couch to 5k but my couch is more appealing than the 5k
ReplyDeleteHaha! that made me giggle I never saw the appeal of running and now I love it! xxx
DeleteI couldn't run for the bus.
DeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI love Amy's song Back to Black! And I love your velvet outfit with the hat, how beautiful you look Vix! Oh and thank you for this delicious recipe1
I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Easter!
Thanks, Marisa! xxx
DeleteAs a fellow non-sporty type, I am delighted for you! I adore swimming but am terribly slow with a poor technique.
ReplyDeleteLoving your orange this post! I ALMOST bought a beautiful full length India Indian block print wra around maxi in the chazzer today in beautiful shades of pink and purple but I don't get on with wrap around skirts so I left it reluctantly!
The vinyl is great. I spot Jethro?Till!
Thanks, Kezzie! I was really lucky, one of my classmates at junior school's mothers was a former Olympian swimmer and I had lessons from her, so even though I lacked confidence for a long time my technique is pretty good (or so I get told).
DeleteWhat a shame you left that wraparound skirt behind, they can be irritating to wear when they're too big and voluminous, I get mad, sell them and then regret doing so! xxx
My first time stopping by here...such a nice blog with very interesting photos...Happy Easter.
ReplyDeleteLovey to meet you, Shug! x
DeleteHi Vix!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love that velvet dress-the colour, the shape, everything✨
Dancing and roller skating were as close as I ever got to exercising.. At 52 I took up horseback riding in an adult beginners class-now I go 3 times a week. It may look like sitting there doing not much but it's a lot, especially during the winters here. Equine therapy!
I keep thinking of running but never do it! You're encouraging me to start :)
Every time I see the vinyl finds I'm like Whaaaaaa? And you saw Amy Winehouse?? How did I not know that? I love her so much. I saw Peter Gabriel during the Biko tour-was a fantastic show. I think 1981? ELO is great too.
And I would like disco mugs too please😂
Gordon is the tuxedoed cousin to my new cat friend Zsa Zsa, who belonged to my friend who passed away. We picked her up a week ago. She is currently separated from the other two, until she gets her bearings🖤🤍
Hope you've had a nice weekend✨
Hello, Stephanie! Thank you so much! I was worried that dress might swamp me but I love how voluminous it is.
DeleteI'm impressed with your exercise regime especially the horse-riding, that must be excellent for your core. I've only ever been on a camel, I'd love to try riding a horse, I know they do forest canters in Corfu but Jon's not very keen!
Amy was amazing, even when we last saw her, which was a few months before she died, her voice was just beautiful. Seeing Peter Gabriel in 1981 for the Biko tour? That's very impressive.
I'm so glad you've got Zsa Zsa, what a wonderful reminder of your friend. I hope its not too log before she settles down and gains some confidence William's been a bit naughty with Gordon this weekend and keeps chasing him but at least he waits for him to finish eating before he does! xxx
I love your outfits! I have two of the albums you have pictured up top. I recently went through all of mine, twice, and sold 166 of them, saving out 200 for old times' sake. Now to get the turntable re-connected to the stereo system. Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteHello, Gina! Lovely to meet you! I'm very impressed with your vinyl sales, what a lovely windfall that must have been - I'm glad you kept a sizeable part of your collection and hope you mange to get the turntable reconnected. I'd offer to lend you Jon, he's always sorting out our friend's systems! xxx
DeleteGordon appears to be very much at home, surveying the scene, comfortably seated INSIDE the door... Presumably William is agreeable to his kinsman joining the household.
ReplyDeleteI know! William's not too enthusiastic but he's kind enough to let Gordon finish his dinner before chasing him! xxx
DeleteSo great that you're become such a fast swimmer. I think it's actually good when you have to keep up with a faster swimmer, it does wonders for one swimming speed and fitness levels. I used to go to the public swimming pool where I had to share a lane with a five or six swimmers- and they were all quite fast so I learned to be fast, too. Not that I was slow, but I definitely learned to be faster.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I hope you've enjoyed your weekend...and are of to a good start of the week. I love those bars, they look delicious!
You're right, Ivana - the pressure to keep up with my fellow fast lane swimmer was the kick I needed to go even faster than usual. Its great to keep challenging ourselves, isn't it?? xxx
DeleteWell done on being in the fast lane, Vix!
ReplyDeleteI see you, Gordon - these folks will give you the best life, come on in!
You find such cool things! Love the shirt, Jon!
It has been public holiday since Thursday to Monday here (spanish style Easter holiday), so totally agree it's annoying if you're not religious nor running away to the mediterranean coast to have an eyewatering expensive and crowded holiday!. Not my cup of tea anyway!
ReplyDeleteBut you're a sight for sore eyes in your velvet dress and also lovely in that delightful block printed maxi skirt!. Gorgeous warm colours!. Love that linen jacket with the orange skirt too, such a lovely ensemble, and so cool glasses too!
Glad that you're feeling strong and swimming like a pro, that's inspiring!. Every time I go a little bit further in my walking, it makes me feel fab too!.
I started to wear trainers some years ago (even if I disliked them so much) because of my orthotics and now I can't stand other shoes! ;DD Those golden ones are fab!
besos
