Yay, after a week of searching, we've finally booked our Winter getaway and the countdown is on!

Malaga, December 2022 |
Another holiday? People often ask, How on earth do you afford it? Yes, travel can be expensive but, if you do your research, don't have stick to public/school holidays and aren't too high maintenance, you don't have to spend a fortune. We've paid less than £450 for our return flights and seven nights accommodation in a Mediterranean coastal town, packed with ancient ruins, museums, great places to eat and numerous Blue Flag beaches.
Fuerteventura, February 2024 |
I thought I'd share a few tips on how we manage to travel well on a budget.

Thirassia, September 2023 |
1. Location
Be open minded and don't set your heart on a specific destination. Despite being sworn off the Canary Islands following a lacklustre trip to Lanzarote in the 1990s, after finding return flights to Gran Canaria for £38 in January, 2023 we couldn't resist.
![]() |
Gran Canaria, January 2022 |
We start off by searching Jet2 and Tui which allow us to an input our choice of airport and approximate travel dates and come up with a list of suggestions.
At this time of year we're after a bit of sunshine, not necessarily beach weather, it just needs to be warm enough to walk around without a coat so, once we've got a few ideas, we'll have a look at the Met Office app & check out the weather history for the period we're planning to visit. Anything below an average of 20°C gets ruled out.

Tenerife, December 2024 |
We don't do purpose built tourist resorts full of Brits, we want culture, history & local flavour, so we'll search the relevant Trip Advisor forums for recommendations from fellow travellers. We'll research any places that sound interesting, hunting for blogs written by real people (as opposed to influencers or travel company affiliates), articles by respected & self-financed travel journalists like Simon Calder and we'll watching YouTube videos which are brilliant for letting you see exactly what places look like. Whatever your thoughts on Facebook, joining the relevant groups for the places you're interested in is a fantastic way of getting up-to-date information.
Another consideration is the availability of public transport at your chosen destination and always worth a search on the TripAdvisor forums. Once we disembark our flight we want to jump on a bus and get to our destination as quickly and cheaply as possible, be able to visit other places and to get back to the airport at the end of our trip without any hassle. A regular and reliable bus service can be a deal-breaker.
Kerkyra, July 2022 |
Once we've narrowed down a few likely destinations we'll have a general search for rooms on Booking.com. We had been considering giving Lanzarote a second chance, whilst the flight prices were great, the accommodation in our preferred location was prohibitive. Maybe next year!
Alicante, March 2022 |
Once we're happy with our choice of destination we'll check the flight prices on the Ryanair & EasyJet websites just to make sure we're getting the best deal. As Ryanair restrict carry-on to a pitiful 40cm x 20cm x 25cm (the equivalent of a small tote bag) you'll need to factor in an additional £30 -45 per person per flight if you want to take a change of clothes with you.
![]() |
Santorini, September 2023 |
Another cost worth considering are the flight times. Although they can be a little more expensive, we prefer daytime flights so that we can catch the train to the airport. At £2.90 return it's a fraction of the price of a taxi, paying for a mate's fuel or airport parking!
![]() |
Halkidiki, May 2023 |
For this trip we've booked our flights with Jet2 via their app which reduced the cost by 5% and, as we'd travelled with them last year, we'd been rewarded with loyalty vouchers which shaved another 5% off the bill.
To keep costs down we never select our seats. Sitting together on costs on average £11 per person, per flight - that's £44 we can put to better use elsewhere. Occasionally we're able to swap seats once the flight has taken off but if not we'll have headphones to hand just in case one of us ends up sitting next to a prize bore!
![]() |
Kos Town, July 2024 |
Needless to say, we won't be upgrading our flight to include check-in baggage. A carry-on is more than enough.

Fuerteventura, February 2024 |
3. Accommodation
Once we've booked our flights we'll take a proper look at the accommodation in the area we've earmarked. As always we use Booking.com and as we always leave property reviews, we're awarded Genius Points which give us discounts and special deals. If you use their App they'll often have lunchtime deals and exclusive offers.
Chania, April 2023 |
I add a few filters to my accommodation search - a private bathroom, a terrace or balcony and in a location 1km or less from our chosen part of town. I always search prices from low to high and always read the blurb carefully just to make sure that there's a kitchenette so we can prepare our fruit & yogurt breakfast and keep our beer cold.
![]() |
Puerto de la Cruz, December 2023 |
I read all the negative reviews as places are often marked down for silly reasons. The property we've chosen is awarded 7.6 out of 10 and the negatives are really silly ones - no lid for the saucepan, the tree outside is too big and the internet was slow. Someone even took exception to the owner of the property bringing them a welcome beer! People are very strange!

ReplyDeleteGreat tips. You really know your way around and know how to get cheap flights.
Your trips are always wonderful.
Thanks, Andrea! xxx
DeleteYou and Jon have got travelling on a budget down to a t!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you've found your next getaway, and I can't wait to read all about it! xxx
Thanks, Ann! I can't wait to escape! xxx
DeleteHi Vix, my favourite kind of conversation, travel! i have a tip for you. We don't pay for seat selection on flights either, but when you get to check in online and see what you've been allocated (we do this as soon as online checkin opens), there's usually a chance to move around within the seats left unclaimed so we move our choices to ensure there is an empty seat between us (especially if a row of 3 seats comes up), quite often (unless it's a very full flight), nobody takes the middle seat(s) and we strike lucky - not always! often if you were unlucky and there's a stranger in the middle travelling alone they are happy to swap for the window seat so it still ends well! This can happen on long or short haul depending on how full the flights are - this worked for us on our Zanzibar and Turkey trips last year where we got a row of 3 and bagged window/aisle and nobody in the middle! Betty
ReplyDeleteThat's a brilliant tip, Betty! I hadn't thought of doing that. Usually we end up next to someone lovely, I'm in contact with a couple of the women I sat next to on flights last year, but there's always the chance you'll end up with an idiot! xxx
DeleteIncredible cacti, I have many in my conservatory, I thought some of mine were big, nearly 2 feet high, but very scarey to see them that size! I wonder how old they are to get that big.
ReplyDeleteI too miss blue skies and warm weather, it's so miserable out there at present.
Will you be going back to India at any point? It used to be your annual winter escape.
Jean.
Wow, Jean! 2 foot high cacti, how fantastic!
DeleteIts worth visiting The Canaries just to see the cacti, they are absolutely incredible and look so majestic against the azure blue skies.
I can't believe it's been 5 years since we last visited India, we had so many amazing trips over the year. We will go back one day but at the moment we're loving exploring Europe. xxx
Great tips, Vix. I've often wondered how you afford frequent holidays. X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jess! Travel can be very affordable! xxx
DeleteYou are a wealth of information! I will probably be heading to Greece in the late summer, early fall. One of my cousins has gone into remission from her pancreatic cancer, so we are doing a trip we'd wanted to do for ages. She wants to do a tour or cruise, and I'll let her choose as after finishing her chemo and getting a clean bill of health, she severely fractured her femur and is rehabbing from that. So, it won't be a rugged adventure, but you can be sure I'm going to scour your postings for everything Greece. You know how to make a trip memorable!
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased to hear about your cousin being in remission from cancer, that's definitely worth celebrating. I hope her fracture heals quickly, he poor woman.
DeleteSeptember is one of the best times to visit Greece, although it can be a bit stormy in the Ionian, the sea's warmer and its still hot and sunny. xxx
Great recommendations. We go away a lot on the weekends with the kids as I no longer work them. We like you choose not hotels, but they are called stays in Japan they are incredibly cheap and we can also get cheap flights. And cheap train tickets as we have a lot of discount sites here. Plus it helps if you know kanji and the lie of the land.
ReplyDeleteWhat I recommend if you are planning to visit japan is to get a JR pass they are expensive but you get unlimited local rail journeys and one return ride on the Shinkansen which covers the cost of the pass and many exhibits in japan accept them as well. Also plan in advance. As you need to know were you are going . And the transportation system is Immense.
Also if you take medication like Codine and certain others you need to fill out a yakken shouei which is for the import and export of controlled substances. Or you can get hauled to jail as a drug dealer and it has happened. If you want to come to Japan miss the middle of may and June as they are holidays for us and they are bananas!!
Those are fantastic tips, Allie! You should join the TripAdvisor Japan forums, you could be one of their travel experts with your years of experience and insider knowledge.
DeleteI remember being warned about several types of painkiller being illegal in Dubai and Bahrain, where we'd often stop off on the way to India. I was always paranoid about packing something and getting banged up abroad, like the chap in Midnight Express! xxx
Such a wonderful post! You two are real pros at this. And I love the photos so much. Wishing you all the best on all your adventures. Thanks again for your sharing your journey in travels!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Ellie! xxx
DeleteI meant to add pack light and pack a suitcase in a suitcase as many places and hotels have washing machines and tumble dryers and they are incredibly cheap as well. Plus there is a 100 yen shop om every street corner or a don whatist ! i also recommend bringing about 2,000 for 10 nights plus a credit card for emergency but cash is king still here
ReplyDeleteI love that there's cheap washing machines and tumble dryers, a real incentive to pack light! I used to get a tailor to sew my India purchases into a parcel and post it home when we were there! xxx
DeleteThese are great tips for both travelling on a budget...and sustainable travelling.
ReplyDeleteI love how you're interested in learning about the local culture.
That's the best thing about travel- learning things and gaining new experiences.
Amazing photos. I remember many of them from your posts, but it's a joy to see them again.
Hi Ivana! Much as I love swimming and sunbathing, I'd be bored witless if that was all I did for a week! I want to try and live like a local when I go somewhere, eat in authentic places and wander around markets and parks! xxx
DeleteI know what you mean. One needs to entertain the brain as well as the body.
DeletePlease tell us what you pack in only a carry on!
ReplyDeleteHi, Deirdré from South Africa!
DeleteHow lovely to hear from you, Deirdré from South Africa! I promise to share my packing when I've done it. I might make a start this afternoon! xxx
DeleteGreat tips but sadly, I am restricted to school holidays!! Xx
ReplyDeleteI'm just in the process of helping a friend who works in education finding a flight. Her first choice was out of budget but we've found a cheaper alternative to somewhere equally as interesting. I think you're best bet are cities when you're restricted by holidays! xxx
DeleteMy lot had to take the kids out of school a week prior to the annual summer break to avoid prices almost quadrupling for their family holiday! I don't think it's anyone's business how you afford your holidays! How rude to even ask you! Living my life vicariously through all you travelling folk! My next door neighbour is in the Arctic Circle doing a charity fund raising walk! His pics from there are amazing, though I don't know how he's coping with the deadly night temps. He's such a heat freak!thanks for another great post.xxx
ReplyDeleteI don't blame them at all! The prices during school holidays can be insane.
DeleteThe only people who ask about how we afford holidays are folk we know in real life, I'm never offended by it and occasionally I'll help them find a deal.
I bet those Arctic Circle photos are amazing, I don't think I could cope with that cold! xxx
Some great tips, Vix. Unfortunately, I'm restricted to school holidays at the moment :(
ReplyDeleteWe don't travel as far afield as you do, but it's always on a tight budget, and I love to find a good deal - it's half the fun. X
It must be a real pain being restricted by school holidays although we've managed to find great deals for a friend, who also works within education, sometimes you just have to be prepared to compromise on location . xxx
DeleteHello, Vix!
ReplyDeleteThis post is a treatise on how to travel to amazing places for little money! Your tips are invaluable! And I love the photos that accompany the text! Now I can only wish a Happy Birthday to Tony!
Happy weekend!
Thanks so much, Marisa! xxx
Deletehello vix! thank you for some wonderful travel tips! i do envy that traveling from the UK to areas in the EU is so easy and the flights are short. i had to laugh about the comments that people leave. i always read comments and when they seem to be so picky i just ignore those and look for truly negative ones.
ReplyDeletekirsten
Hi Kirsten. We are so fortunate having so many travel options so close to home.
DeleteThe comments about being able to afford holidays are made by people we know in real life, not the lovely folk who leave comments on my blog. I think it's just a Black Country thing, we're can be very direct which can come across as rude to some. xxx
Fantastic tips, Vix. Coincidentally, I was just reading on a Corfu forum about a woman who saved over £300 on her holiday to Corfu by buying the trip through a physical Tui shop rather than via the App. She found this out accidentally when the App was playing up and she phoned Tui. They put her through to one of their shops.
ReplyDeleteHeloise.
Hello Heloise! A few years ago we booked a flight with Tui online only to get a message a few weeks later informing us that they'd changed the airport from Birmingham to Bristol. We tried for a week to get hold of someone on the phone and in desperation, popped into the Tui shop in town where they told us that the shop and the website were different entities and all they could do was try and phone the website on our behalf.
DeleteTo be honest I'd not thought of going into the shop and asking them to search for flights, maybe we could try that next time we're looking just as an experiment! xxx
PS. My partner tells me that, had I read the rest of this woman's post, she claimed to have also booked a trip to the Canaries at the same time and made an even bigger savings on that trip!
ReplyDeleteHeloise
Fab tip! xxx
DeleteHi Vix. A fab post! I've never regretted travel, only that I haven't done it more and still think of the people I've met along the way many years later. Travel broadens the mind. You are so right about the extras adding up...the baggage, seats together (if you choose) transport to and from the airport, pet sitters and dependent on where you go, tourist tax, too so your tips are excellent. Feel sorry for parents (and teachers) limited to school holidays with the massive price hikes. Love the photo with the ginormous cacti on! Look forward to reading about the next adventure! : ) Louise (Mids) X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Louise! I didn't go abroad until I was 21 and able to pay my own way and was so besotted I promised myself I'd take a trip every year for the rest of my life, so far, so good. I get so exasperated by those who think foreign travel is all about sitting around a pool with loads of other Brits and having chips with everything, it really does broaden your horizons.
DeleteThere's so many hidden extras to account for so you really have to look at every cost and see how you can shave a bit off.
I'd hate to have my holidays set in stone, it makes such a difference being able to fly whenever we want to.
Jon's got that cacti photo as his screen saver! xxx
These are great tips for traveling on a budget Vix! So many beautiful photos as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pilar! x
DeleteThese are fabulous tips - kudos to you for shaving off $ here and there. It's very expensive for us to get off Vancouver Island (only options are the public ferries, which are cheap but take forever, with lots of driving on either end, or flights which are very expensive, but get you there fast), so I'm always looking for ways to save.
ReplyDeleteMuch love to you, Jon and William! <3
Great tips!. I'm missing those pre-covid times when we travelled (on a budget) three times a year. We're now becoming 'high maintenance', totally spoiled by our travels by car and last holidays at Canary Islands!.
ReplyDeleteI'm saving this post for later, I'll re-read it before we book any travel!
besos & gracias
