Evening, all! Hope all's well in your world. Here's what's been happening in mine since we got back from Tenerife.

The vintage Indian cotton block printed midi dress I'd found for €4 at the Puerto de la Cruz flea market was worn for swimming and our Spoons breakfast last Tuesday morning. Our boy has barely left our sides since we got home, he's cuddled up next to Jon in bed at night and he's even started sitting on my lap, gazing at me adoringly.
It was the annual Walsall Society of Artists exhibition preview at the New Art Gallery last Thursday which included several pieces of Liz's artwork including the fantastic Daft Punks behind her. The bag she's carrying is another of her creations, made from old teabags - possibly the coolest recycle ever. The exhibition runs until 2nd February, 2025 details HERE.
Before the exhibition we popped into The Light, Walsall's independent town centre cinema, to see Conclave which was every bit as gripping as Robert Harris's book. Robert Harris is such a great writer that he makes even subjects you haven't the slightest bit of interest in utterly fascinating (like religion!)
We treated ourselves to artisan pizzas, made from scratch in front of us along with a pint of Camden IPA.
I can't wait to see The Brutalist and Maria, both due for release in the New Year.
This coat was waiting for me when I got home from Tenerife. I've had a hankering for a jumbo cord coat since falling in love with the one worn by Colin Firth, when he played Bill Haydon in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy back in 2011. I spotted this vintage beauty on Vinted and although the photos and description weren't great, at £7 it was worth a gamble. Jon found the fur collar in the bargain bin in the hospice shop for a quid.
Worn with a block printed maxi dress and the fedora I'd revamped with a scrap of Morris &Co Golden Lily fabric leftover from my waistcaot project, this was last Friday's charity shopping outfit.
On Saturday we met up with our Glastonbury gang for a curry and a few drinks over in the nearby village of Stonall - although a few drinks turned out to be a lot of drinks and we didn't get home until after 2am. No photos were taken but we had a brilliant time. Everything's crossed that we'll be back at Worthy Farm in June!
Wednesday was another night out. The weather was atrocious but I insisted on taking a few photos inside before we left the house.
Jon's wearing the Zara camo shirt he found in a charity shop before we went to Tenerife where it had several outings. He's got his slippers on in this photo but he didn't go out in them...honest!
Due to our penchant for moody interiors you can't see my feet so here's my fabulous snakeskin boots (Vinted) and one of my tribal pendants.
We met Tony in 'Spoons, had a few beers and a pizza and, as the weather was so atrocious, got an Uber to Bilston, our destination for the evening.
I'd never been to The Robin before. Billed as the West Midlands' premiere 700 capacity live music venue, its been open since 1998 and even has a small hotel on the premises.
The band we'd gone to see were The Icicle Works, who we'd last seen supporting Big Country in the early 1990s. Although Tony's a fan, the only song Jon and I could remember was Love is a Wonderful Colour, their hit from 1983 (HERE) but that didn't matter, frontman Ian McNabb & guitarist Chris Layhe, were on fine form, played a wonderfully chilled acoustic set and were on stage for over three hours before taking a seat at the bar and inviting fans to join them...We don't do VIP areas, all our fans are very important people to us.
The Robin has live music almost every night of the year. The following night East 17 were playing....if I'd known I'd have bought a ticket just to hear Stay Another Day....I love that song and secretly fancied Tony Mortimer (although not so much these days!)
My birthday present from Tony, a silver & turquoise bangle (my birthstone!) made in Athens and worn in Bilston.
On Thursday night we met up with the gang in The Avion, former 1930s cinema & Aldridge's branch of Wetherspoons, for a few beers. Jon and I got there first and managed to snag a table, a rare feat as that particular branch of Spoons is always rammed. A man came over to tell me how beautiful my hair was...thank you, kind sir!
Our second curry in less than a week! And our dinner was just as delicious as it always is at Laboni. The boss gave us Xmas cards with January discount vouchers, something to look forward to in the New Year.
I wore the Egyptian Revival jewellery Jon bought me for my birthday.
The beads are faience, a ceramic made with quartz as opposed to clay and mixed with lime and copper. Although the seller listed it as 1970s, its more likely 1930s.
The earrings are vintage Czech made from a broken Art Deco-era necklace utilising two rare turquoise scarabs and classic Neiger pinch beads. The ear wires are gold plated and feature a classic Art Deco fan motif.
I didn't take an outfit photo on Thursday night but wore the same dress again today albeit with a hat, different jewellery and boots and my trusty Marks & Spencer purple vest. This is why I'm not cut out for Instagram, I wear my clothes on repeat! Incidentally the dress is from Brighton-based boutique, All About Audrey, bought with the proceeds of my Vinted sales and therefore technically free.
New to me is this incredible fringed vintage suede bag with native American beadwork and silver studs - £4.50 from Vinted!
I'm obsessed with gold after watching Gladiator 2. Until I can find any two-thousand year old Roman pieces I'll have to make so with these bangles I found in a charity shop and the bits I've collected over the years. The Brutalist carved wooden ring was made by Mum in the 1960s.This brass pendant is a whopper. Its made in Jaipur by British contemporary jewellery brand, Tutti & Co and cost £1.45 from Vinted (unworn and in its original pouch!)
It what's known as Mad Friday here in the UK, when people break up from work, overdo it in the pub and fight in the streets or at least that's usually what happens in Walsall, the sirens have already started. I'm quite happy to have a night in front of the TV with a cat on my lap and a glass of rum in my hand. On the agenda tonight is the last in the current series of kick-ass shoot-'em-up British spy thriller Black Doves and last night's The Great British Sewing Bee, Celebrity Christmas Special (I don't do celebrities or Xmas but I do love sewing!)
Tomorrow marks the Winter Solstice, I'll be out after sun rise doing as I've done since I was old enough to wield a pair of secateurs and bringing in boughs of evergreen from the garden, festooning our home and putting the finishing touches to my Yuletide wreath. Have a cool Yule, dear readers!
As I stand here on this celebration of Yule, the sacred wheel of the year has turned once again and it is now midwinter. As my forebears did, I do now, and so may my descendants do in time to come. It is the Solstice, the longest night and shortest day. Today I celebrate the return of the Sun. Since the summer, it has gradually become colder and darker, but from this time forwards, the days shall get longer and lighter and warmer again. The Solar year has run its course and completed its cycle and a new year begins, bringing light, life and hope to the earth.

Wishing you a good festive break Vix. I'm off dancing in Stonehenge for the Druids again on Sunday. It's quite funny when you see all the tourists behind the fence taking our photos. Arilx
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a fantastic Solstice, I'd love to see you dancing at Stonehenge one day. xxx
DeleteMay the turning of the wheel bring light and love, kindness and clarity.
ReplyDeleteBlessings be.
And the same to you, dear Kate. xxx
DeleteWhat a lovely post! Your block print dress was a bargain! I love your corduroy coat though I can't get over the colour!!!! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYour birthday presents are beautiful, esp the Scarabs! The gigs sound great. I agree with the man, your hair looks beautiful!!!
I wanted some of those monkee boots a while back! I regret not getting them when I saw some reasonably!xx
Thanks, Kezzie! That was a bit of an epic post. Monkey boots are fab, back in our youth they were the improvised teenagers alternative to Doc Martens but seem to have come into their own now. xxx
DeleteI'm exhausted with your recap but so much fun with friends. Have a joyful time getting your greenery in and celebrating that we start to get more light...despite getting a couple months of bitter cold in my case.
ReplyDeleteHi Sam. The weather usually gets a lot worse after Xmas but at least we have a little more light. xxx
DeleteOh Vix, you look glorious ! Have a fabulous Solstice and holiday season!! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carol! It's so lovely to see a comment from you pop up. xxx
DeleteOh, it does my heart good to you see and your pals, friends and mates out having a good time (or not see them, when it's a rousing 2am-er! That's how you know it's a good party - there are no pictures! ).
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful clothes and outfits, of course, I am swooning over everything! That Egyptian revival necklace is a stunner, as is your gold bangles/ring. Your mom carved that Brutalist ring? How amazing!
Good to see William and hear he's become so affectionate. Jon's boots are amazing!
Wishing you, Jon, William and all of your Chosen Family the most wonderful good times...all year round. A very happy Yule to you, Yule Queen!! Big hugs!!
Hello Sheila! I love seeing you out with your pals, too. Yes, that is the sign of a great night, no photos. I'm always a bit suspicious of people who constantly post photos on social media when they're out, that's not a sign of having fun, surely.
DeleteI knew you'd like that ring Mu made, what a shame she got pregnant with me and ended up a wife and mother rather than an artist.
Sending you lot of love. xxx
Such a great maxi! Love seeing you out on the town..and with the CAT too! Such a brilliant post. All the best to a beautiful holiday and so on. Be you!
ReplyDeleteLovely to meet you, Ellie! Wishing you a wonderful Xmas. xxx
DeleteToday is our longest day, and after several days of high 30s and even the odd 40 degrees we please that it is back down to mid 20s. Enjoy the season. We don't do Christmas either; just dinner with family, no presents just each other's presence.
ReplyDeleteHello Lynette - I'm glad things are cooling down with you and more comfortable. I love your sentiment of presence and not presents. We exchange a few small gifts, second-hand, handmade and edible usually but none of that ludicrous expense and plastic tat that invariably ends up in landfill a couple of weeks later. Much love to you. xxx
DeleteI've been reading everyone's blogs, but been unable to sit comfortably due to a back and shoulder issue. I'm also full of cold, so forgive me if I haven't left a comment on every blog.
ReplyDeleteI can see you had a wonderful holiday and you've certainly not let the dust settle since your return!
I love all of your finds and your birthday gifts and have to say Liz looks beautiful in your photo - that bag is exquisite!
I've bagged myself some gold jewellery (well, plated, but artisan and gorgeous). I'm thrilled with it. It's had a few outings so far, but I'm seriously lacking the energy to blog about anything right now. There always seems to be something more pressing...
William reminds me of Noah (the cat that doesn't belong to us). He sits on my lap and lifts his head up against my chest to stare at me. They are funny! xxx
I wondered why you'd gone quiet, I'd hoped it was photography and fun, not germs and back pain. I hope you start feeling better soon, Claire!
DeleteThat cat stare melts my heart, Noel's got great taste and a very seasonally appropriate name! xxx
It's great to see you having fun.
ReplyDeleteThe coat is very Cruella, indeed. Have you seen a film? I haven't, but I watched parts of it on Youtube shorts, and the acting seems very good.
I love your snakeprint boots. Just fabulous.
Your hair looks beautiful.
Happy Solstices!
I'm looking forward to longer days...although to be honest, we haven't had much cold yet, so I can't complain of the cold, I always crave more light and can't wait for days to get longer.
I'm so happy that the school term is over....and relieved. It's been tiring. I really need a break.
Hello Ivana! Enjoy every moment of your school holidays, you've deserved them! xxx
DeleteAww, absence really did make William's heart grow even fonder of both of you. What a busy and fun-filled time you have been having over the last few days. Yes, there used to be a LOT of shall we say 'antics' when I lived in Barrow in Furness on Mad Friday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Winter Solstice, now we can look forward to the days lengthening and the sun returning. xx
Hello Sue! Walsall's festive nightlife is something else, there's loads of YouTube videos of the fights that continually break out i the town centre.
DeleteI'm so glad we're moving back towards the light! xxx
ReplyDeleteGreat post, think your coats are adorable, they suit you beautifully.
Liz's bag is very chic and original, the idea behind it is brilliant.
It was the solstice today, the days are getting longer again. I think that makes you happy. :)
xxx
Thanks Andrea, the thought of the days getting longer does make me happy! xxx
DeleteWhat an exciting week you've had, it definitely puts mine to shame!
ReplyDeleteLoving the € 4 flea market frock and the Vinted coat is fabulous: that faux fur collar is a perfect match! And oh my, how stunning is that Egyptian Revival jewellery. Jon certainly knows how to pick a present, although Tony's wasn't too bad either. You have been spoiled!
LIz's artwork is absolutely fantastic, and I'm swooning over her old teabags bag, which I remember seeing on her Instagram.
Oh, and I love Stay Another Day too ... and of course, I keep telling all and sundry that I was once (must have been in 96 or 97) on a flight from Brussels to London with the band. They'd been to Brussels for a night out, apparently. xxx
I bet you're glad to have broken up and escaped the hellish commute, dear Ann. All those dead behind the eyes shoppers I had to contend with when getting the bus home from Brum back in the olden days still gives me nightmares!
DeleteI love your East 17 story! xxx
Gosh both of you have been lucky with your frugal finds - Jons boots are fabulous, no wonder men chase down the street to ask where he got them! Your hair is looking amazing lately. Your cord coat is a winner and the fur collar Jon found takes it to another level. Your friend Liz is so talented, I love her art work - am curious to know how a bag is made from teabags! Little William must really feel he belongs with you now - by contrast our Mollie still is passive aggressive after 4 years, she frequently 'hits' me with a claws in paw if I fuss too much or pick her up - I persevere :) I love that you too make a wreath for Solstice. Betty x
ReplyDeleteHello Betty! I love this time of year for hunting out bargains, everyone else seems to be caught up in the madness that is Xmas!
DeleteLiz has even made shoes from teabags, I'll have to find a photo and share it on the blog.
William has his moments and will often go from loving and cuddly to full-on demon mode, Jon's got the claw marks to prove it!
Much love to you. xxx
You're right,
ReplyDeletethe days are indeed getting a little longer!
It's nice to notice those small changes.
And it's great you liked the fur coat and snakeskin boots.
Giving such fantastic pieces a second life is definitely a good thingš§”⛄š²š
Stay healthy and happy, and continue to give and receive love.
You're back! I've missed you. Sending you much love, dear Katerina. xxx
DeleteHi Vix, great posts, as ever, since your return. I love your hair too, it is so beautiful. Happy birthday, I'm very jealous of your scarab earrings. Turquoise is my birthstone too, Christmas Eve. I have always loved the stone but your earrings are another level! I'm so glad the days are getting longer now and I can't wait for more heat and light. William is such a gorgeous boy I can just imagine him gazing up at you. Have a great few days and I look forward to your post Christmas posts I'm not annoymous btw I'm Shelagh! xx
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you, dear Shelagh! Thanks for the kind comments throughout the year! xxx
DeleteBelated happy birthday to you Vix! Wishing you a wonderful year✨š
ReplyDeleteI always appreciate the sanity of your blog this time of the yearšalways an antidote for the consumer crassmass of this part of the world.
I love the solstice too-had a great time burning things yesterday :)
Bring on the light, life and hopeš
Hello Stephanie! I'm so pleased to hear from you and happy knowing you were burning stuff at Solstice. I was playing Goat's Let in Burn especially. Much love to you. xxx
DeleteBlessed be, Vix xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for the gorgeousness - the brass pendant is glorious and like having your own harvest moon!
Elaine Anon
Thanks, sweetheart! Harvest Moon - you're not wrong there. No point in wearing discrete jewellery, is there? xxx
DeleteHello, Vix,
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with your busy social life!
I love your style and your unique looks, btw your hair looks marvellous! Happy Sunday!
Thanks, Marisa! xxx
DeleteAwh what a fantastic full blog post. So lovely to see you wearing Philip’s Mum’s coat. She would be so chuffed to know that it is still being worn. I’m going to show the family when we see them on Boxing Day.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you both and sending lots of love. Xxx
Sending you both loads of love and hugs, dear Lynn & Philip. xxx
DeleteI really like your moody indoor outfit shots, they look lovely. It looks like you’ve been having a lot of fun. I always love gold jewellery, but I love silver too, so I usually just wear all the metals together. I hope you and Jon have a great Christmas. Looks like you’ve started the fun already. Xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Louise! Wishing you the same! xxx
DeleteHello my dear friend from England, I wish you a Merry Christmas with lots of peace and health, everything else is secondary! I hope you have a good holiday surrounded by people who love you! Hugs from Portugal!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, dear Marisa, my beautiful friend in Portugal. Sending you much love and happiness for Xmas. xxx
DeleteVix, your cord coat and suede fringe bag have to be the best finds of 2024! I love them!!!! X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jess! xxx
