Doing It Our Way

Hello! I hope your Xmas was exactly how you wanted it to be. William was thrilled with his present, a catnip Donald Trump, which he dragged around by the hair, chucked in the air and gnawed at for hours.

How decadent, sherry at 11.30am!!!

I wore a 1970s green velvet Quad dress with huge Mediaeval - inspired sleeves, bought from a charity shop in town earlier this year for £2.99. I wore it with some vintage green leather cowboy boots, the Tutti & Co pendant I'd found on Vinted and wore a 1960s chain belt around my head.

Jon's in his current favourite, a Zara charity-shopped shirt and, as he didn't have to go further than the bin, kept his slippers on all day.

The boys came round at midday and after presents and a Xmas toast we sat down to lunch. The lads started with melon and Palma ham drizzled with balsamic vinegar, I just had the melon.

The carnivores had Spanish chicken, chicken breasts and chorizo cooked in a tomato, vegetable and butterbean stew, and vegetarian me had the stew with added courgettes and basil.

We'd taken advantage of the 8p vegetables on offer in Aldi and made Duchesse potatoes, oven roasted shredded sprouts cooked with olive oil, sea salt and sprinkled with vegan bacon bits along with honey and mustard glazed carrot and parsnip batons with chilli flakes.

The boys brought Xmas cake, Lindor truffles and a rum-infused Stollen which we made short work of whilst playing an epic five hour game of Trivial Pursuit , eventually won by my brother.  Cheers!

My presents included a Greek hamper from Tony.

Barry M makeup from Jon

Also from Jon a pair of radical tea towels and a radical calendar.

Liz made me these amazing merino wool arm pom poms inspired by Carla Rockmore.

From Liz and Al, a fair trade jewellery box, Nag Champa (not pictured, already being burnt) and a 00% mulberry silk pillow case.

From Liz's mum, Hazel, posh biscuits and some damson chutney handmade by Rob, Liz's brother.

This replica cowgirl chic pattern comes with free dressmaking lessons from Liz, which will be essential for tackling the tricky bits!

My brother Marcus bought us this Parallel Lines clock, an album both Jon and I bought when it was first released in 1978 ...and still own our original copies.

Boxing day started with a walk to the lockers to drop off my Vinted sales, hence the reason why Jon's got his boots on and despite spending the majority of the day with my nose buried in my book (A Place of Greater Safety, which I've finally finished), I still wore clothes, a vintage Mohanjeet, Paris woven cotton maxi skirt with an All About Audrey marmalade velvet wrap top.

After a couple of chilled-out days at home, its time for some fresh air and exercise. The flask's full, the sandwiches are made and a National Trust property awaits. I'll be back with photos very soon.

  1. Looks like a good day all round for you all.
Before I could mention Philip’s mums coat yesterday, a great conversation started about how she was ahead of her time and very confident in her choice of clothes. Everyone was thrilled to bits when I showed them the photo of you wearing it last week and said Eunice would love the story of you now owning it xxx

  2. You look like something out of The Lady of Shallot in that green velvet dress. Your food looks fab and it sounds like a good time was had by one and all. That Blondie clock is brilliant, Debbie Harry was so cool back in the day, all my friends and I so wanted to look like her. I look forward to your National Trust outing. Happy New Year to you and Lord Jon and not forgetting the most handsome of cats William what a gorgeous boy. Regards Sue H

  4. Oh your green dress is amazing! What a colour. I love the Blondie clock, a totally inspirational woman. My dogs would see the arm pom-poms as sex friends! Your food looked delish, We had assorted Indian dishes and they were such a nice contrast to the usual Crimble bland grub. Looking forward to your NT exploits! x

    1. Thanks, Lisa! It actually came with a matching floor length hooded cape, I've yet to wear it but I'm sure it'll get an outing to Wetherspoons or somewhere equally glam very soon!
I better take care wearing those pompoms or I might attract an amorous dog!
liking the sound of your Indian dishes, I'd rather eat a bowl of noodles than a roast dinner! xxx

  5. Hi Vix, your Quad green medievalesque velvet dress is amazing and you wear it to perfection. You can't beat vintage velvet! Blondie too. You really are spoiling us. I went out to a smart restaurant on Christmas Eve and gave my Marion Donaldson black velvet dress its first outing ( by me at least).

    1. Hello Alysia (I guessed it was you before I read your follow-up comment!) I love vintage velvet and as I mentioned to Lisa in the previous comment, it actually came with a matching cape.
I was obsessed with Blondie and remember locking myself in my bedroom and sobbing for hours after reading in the Record Mirror that they were going to split up.
I bet your Marion Donaldson dress is gorgeous, how lovely to give an outing to a fancy restaurant. xxx

Donald should only be available in this small edition. The size is perfect :D

The green dress harmonized well with the sherry.

    1. Loving your holly wreath circlet idea, Kezzie! Its a gorgeous dress, I imagine that it was worn by a Winter bride in the 1970s as it came with a matching cape.
Weirdly I'd watched a Western called The Missing the night before and was banging on to Jon about how wonderful Cate Blanchett's costumes were, now I can make my own! xxx

  9. William obviously loved his cat nip toy. Miss Sheva ignored hers but devoured several handuls of cheese Dreamies. Our best pressie was from daughters, a year's membership to Chatsworth House, garden, shop, garden centre, and free parking. It will be lovely to just go and wander. Our first visit is Sunday, fingers crossed the weather's ok. Xx

What a wonderful Xmas present, a gift to last all year round. I've never been to Chatsworth but would love to, I bet you can't wait to use that membership! xxx

  15. William is clearly delighted with his catnip Donald Trump - what a brilliant toy! I'd buy one for Bess but she's completely immune to catnip, it seems!
Your green velvet dress couldn't have been more perfect, and I'm salivating at the sight of your Christmas dinner. Your Boxing Day outfit is stunning too, bringing a welcome ray of sunshine to my computer screen.
And you were definitely spoiled with presents: loving Liz's arm pom poms in particular and how brilliant is your brother's Parallel Lines clock! One of my favourite albums ever! xxx

  19. The sleeves on the green velvet dress made me think of Princess Anne's wedding dress. The sleeves were very dramatic.

Glad you had a great Christmas. I love gifts that are edible. Our youngest came home on leave, he's stationed on Vancouver Island. Rogers chocolates for me and fresh coffee from Murchies (both very British Columbia treats)

    Have a good new years.

    1. I think my Quad dress was possibly used as a wedding dress, it came with a matching cape. Princess Anne was the best of the royal brides, I think.
You can't beat an edible (or quaffable) gift, can you? We've made the boys hampers in past. I'm off to Google the treats your youngest son gave you, I'm intrigued.
