We were really excited when some festival friends told us that they'd be in Corfu at the same time as us so we arranged to meet up for lunch. Travelling the 30km distance to see them involved catching a couple of buses but with it being a Sunday the service was quite limited so we decided to hire a car from lovely Mr George Michaelis in the village and take in a few sights along the way.
Our first stop was Pagi, one of the locations used in the 1981 James Bond film, For Your Eyes Only.

At the time of filming United Artists was on the brink of financial ruin and it was decided to film on Corfu to save money. On previous trips we've visited other locations where the film was shot, the New Fortress in Kerkyra HERE and The Achillion HERE.
After Roger Moore popped into the village taverna during filming, owner Spiros subsequently changed its name to Bond 007. We'd planned to stop for frappes and bougatsas (Greek custard pies) but discovered to our dismay that Spiros didn't open until midday so I've had to nick this photo of the interior from TripAdvisor.

It wasn't a wasted journey though as we're always delighted to explore a traditional Ionian mountain village.

Spot the cats, Ruth!

We loved the photos on the graves in the cemetery showing the departed villagers in their traditional dress.
Many of those buried here lived well into their 90s. The beautiful woman below died when she was 100 and we found another who'd lived until she was 102.
We headed to the nearby beach resort of Arillas, close to where 007 wandered along the sand in his dinner suit...
An area we'd not visited before, it had a very surfer-y vibe and reminded us of El Cotillo in Fuerteventura where we'd stayed back in February (HERE). It was ridiculously windy and both the beach and sea were deserted.
Anyway, we had a lovely leisurely lunch in a seafront taverna, a short walk away from the dreaded strip and it was fantastic to chat without being distracted by customers.
As we'd got the car we offered to show Craig & Katie a bit more of Corfu, driving them to Seventh Heaven at Perouládes, a very cool bar with a spectacular view we'd last visited in 2017.
We did consider scaling the cliffs down to the beach but the wind was insane! Jon likened the beach to California's Big Sur...it's gloriously rugged.
After dropping our pals back in Sidari (see you in a field next year, guys!) we headed back to Paleokastritsa which, being nestled in the mountains, seemed to have escaped the winds battering the North coast of the island.
Yammas!
While I'm a bit sad to be back at home in the rain, after 17 days with a handful of dresses, it's wonderful to be reunited with my wardrobe. Here's what I've worn so far this week....
Thanks for reading...see you soon!
Loved your holiday diaries, such a lovely island, well apart from the Blackpool twin town that is. I have enjoyed your Paleo trip so much. It is 30 years since I was there, I would love to visit again
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Carole! You ought to go back to Paleo, I don't think you'd be disappointed (I'd not bother with Sidari though!)!
DeleteCan't get enough of your posts! everywhere you have been I have loved, I like seeing the cats and the beautiful houses. Hiring a car - very adventurous! My driving is limited to local/familiar journeys in the UK so I think I would pass on that one! All that's needed to complete the Bond theme is you emerging from the see like Ursula Andress (Dr No)!
ReplyDeleteHello Betty! I'm glad you're enjoying the posts. Corfu is so lovely, its amazing how these little villages are so unspoilt despite it being such a popular island. Ursula Andress - in my dreams! The roads in Corfu are really well-maintained as as long as you avoid July and August when they're full of crazy tourists, they're okay - or so Jon tells me. xxx
DeleteThank you for bringing back happy memories of my first trip to Corfu, indeed to Greece, in 1976. Visited Arillas and Sidari - absolutely nothing there in those days! Visited Zakynthos the following year which was then very unspoiled, but visited again in 2012 and was horrified with all the 'resorts' there. However, read very recently that the sea turtle population is thriving so that's some good news!
ReplyDeleteHello Julia! I bet Corfu was incredible back in 1976 (not that it still isn't!) but to be there before the 1980s and the advent of mass tourism must have been brilliant. I can't bear those "resorts", they're so soulless and depressing, aren't they? A lot of people dislike Paleokastritsa as it doesn't have a "strip" and there's no clubs or entertainment there, that's why we love it!
DeleteBrilliant news about about the turtles. xxx
The photo with the cliffs and the sea is sensational. The village is also so picturesque, I found Ruth too. :)
ReplyDeleteLooking at your posts from Corfu is always like a little vacation.
Wish you a wonderful evening xxx
Thanks so much! Isn't that beach magnificent? xxx
DeleteAnother lovely adventure. I was highly amused that you hired a car from George Michaelis. Sidari sounds a bit like Scarborough lol, but obviously with sunshine, we don't get a great deal of that in Yorkshire xxx
ReplyDeleteWe do love George Michaelis, we giggle whenever we see him, he's the dead spit of Philip Serrell from Bargain Hunt and nothing like the former lead singer of Wham (RIP!) xxx
DeleteMy gosh I chuckle at your description of Sidari.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about Sidari is the view of it from the car's wing mirror! xxx
DeleteThis is just what I needed to see on a very rainy, soggy day on the way to school! How lucky you had friends there too! I really need to explore Corfu! We only spent one night there on the way to the Vikos gorge on mainland Greece!
ReplyDeleteThat IS AN IMPRESSIVE vinyl collection!!! Kx
Oh no! We haven't had any rain today but the temperature has plummeted this afternoon! It was so exciting to meet up with friends, we normally only hav etime to chat when we're working, its great to spend some time getting to talk properly.
DeleteCorfu is such an amazing island, there's something for everyone - even bingo-lovin' Brits! xxx
Always interesting to see those little pockets of streets and houses. Makes you wonder how the people live and what kind of work they do to get by. Love those tavernas.xxx
ReplyDeleteI know! I'm amazed at what long lives they live, too! xxx
DeleteYour autumn outfits are stellar - I love seeing your hat collection. Wonderful pics of Corfu - I love the tie-in with "For Your Eyes Only"! That was a very early Bond film for me (seen in the theatre, I might add). Lovely little kitty, and I laughed at the description of the tourist strip - I loathe those strips. So windy! But it makes for great pics. How funny that Jon has a twin...with good taste in music too!
ReplyDeleteThank you as always for the amazing pictures! I much prefer travel this way - someone else doing all the work. ;-P
Hello Birthday Girl, hope you've been celebrating in style! I think the first Bond film we saw at the cinema was The Living Daylights so you beat me by a few years.
DeleteThose strips don't appeal to me at all, luckily our friends were staying in a little locally run hotel and managed to dodge all the Brits Abroad stuff! xxx
Following in the footsteps of Bond - how exciting!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely that you were able to meet up with your festival friends on holiday (glad you dodged the strip) and that stretch of coastline does indeed look like Big Sur. Absolutely stunning!
Not sure if you've seen the TV show featuring the Top Gear guys. It's a bit naff and centred around men's health, but last week they were in Greece, where apparently there are no therapists or retirement homes, all age groups mix and appear to live to a ripe old age! xxx
We do love a Bond mission when we're away. Funnily enough the first time we did a location hunt was in Tangier where The Living Daylights, the film I've just mentioned in my comment to Sheila was filmed!
DeleteI spotted that Top Gear show on the iplayer, I might have to have a look at the greek one. It's interesting about the therapists and retirement homes, it really is all about community in Greece, every looks out for each other, what with the weather and the healthy diet it's not surprising that they live for so much longer than us! xxx
I'm so glad you got to return to Corfu and I'm well jealous! It's such a lovely place. OH is a huge James Bond fan and will watch any Bond movie whenever they're on and as you know that's at least several times a week. That meant for once I was familiar with the plot line of a movie and recognised the yellow Citroen and ensuing chase, well. It was fab you were able to hire a car for the day. I loved your orange dress and as for George's vinyl collection my gob was well and truly smacked! It's good to get back into warmer clothing but if only we didn't have to wear it for so long...
ReplyDeletexxx
Sorry that's me, Vronni - I didn't realise bloody Google had changed how you comment!
DeleteHello Vronni! Thanks for your visit, I'm missing your blog already! Jon's the same with Bond (and Bourne), he was watching Spectre a couple of days ago. I think For Your Eyes Only with its cost cutting took enough money at the box office to save United Artists from bankruptcy!
DeleteCorfu is so gorgeous, I never get tired of it. Even during the dew hours of rain it was still beautiful. Jon's in the process of sending George some of our duplicate vinyl, he'll need to build another shelf in Cactus soon! xxx
Oh dear, it seems I'm truly behind with visiting blogs and commenting!
ReplyDeleteHowever, your post was a very welcome diversion from the bleak days here at Dove Cottage - Jos is suffering from severe depression at the moment - so I'm soaking up all the good vibes from your Corfu adventures.
Pagi looks well worth a visit, with or without the 007 connection. Not so sure about "Shitari", although meeting up with your friends more than redeemed it. And Cactus does look right up your street. Imagine Jon having a Greek twin! xxx
Hello Ann. I'm so sorry to hear of Jos's depression, that must be so horrible and frightening for both of you. Sending lots of love and hoping he starts feeling more like him normal lovely self very soon.
DeleteYes, Pagi was well worth a visit, I shall return for a custard pie next time. xxx
Glorious! This morning it is incredibly cold and dark here, so reading all about your travels and seeing your beautiful, sunshiny photographs has been quite the tonic. X
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jules! I was amazed to see the frost yesterday morning, it seems insanely early! xxx
DeleteThis place is a heaven!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing all that beauty with us.
Thanks, Ivana! We love Corfu! x
DeleteOh Vix, this made me cry a bit. You express how you feel about Corfu so beautifully and really make me feel - at least temporarily - that I am back in the Garden of the Gods. I particularly loved the bits about Arillas. We usually stay in a cottage on a farm near there and absolutely love it. It is known for its (largely) German hippy community, the Corfu Brewery and the naturist beach. One of my favourite recent moments was walking along the beach in the morning and seeing a gorgeous elderly lady in her birthday suit waving scarves around and communing with the universe. Talk about finding your bliss! Special lady. We were there for the Arillas Wine Festival. Visitors are welcomed but it is essentially a local tradition. We stayed until about midnight and the locals were still dancing at four AM! Anyway, thank you so much for this series.
ReplyDeleteHeloisexxx
PS. You are very beautiful xx
Hello Heloise! You've just reminded me that its about time I reread my Gerald Durrell collection. We both loved Arillas, it had a lovely laid back feel. What a fantastic place you stay at. We had a frappe in a lovely vegetarian deli/ cafe on the seafront and yes, everyone else seemed to be German and very hippy-ish. I spotted the Corfu Brewery after we'd picked up the young hitchhiker, I'd love to have a look around there. That wine festival sounds wonderful, how lucky to experience it for yourselves. The lady you bumped into sounds like my kind of lady! xxx
DeletePS You've made me blush, thank you! x
