Hello Autumn!

Up until a few days ago parts of the UK was enjoying an Indian summer and most afternoons last week you'd have found me in my bikini reading in the sunshine. It all went downhill at the weekend when temperatures plummeted and we awoke to the first frosts of the season.

As most of my clothes are worn all year round, it doesn't take me long get my wardrobe ready for the cooler months. Here's the double wardrobe where I store my coats, jackets and maxis. The shelf contains bags and the leopard bag on the bottom holds my sandals. My belts, gloves and scarves are stuffed in the two baskets below my Afghan coat.

Here's my boot collection.

I store my blouses, waistcoats and skirts in the other double wardrobe. There's my hats and a few more bags on the top shelf. Stashed below are a couple more pairs of boots and my baskets. The suitcases on top of the wardrobe are stuffed with my sundresses, flimsier frocks and festival gear.

The top three dressing table drawers contain underwear, socks & tights and workout gear. My shorts, bikinis and Summery tops are in the bottom one.

I treated myself to a new clothes rail to hang my midi dresses and moved our 1960s chair out of the bedroom so I could squeeze it into the corner.

Despite it being bitterly cold I had to wear my new dress to hit the town on Saturday night - a 1970s printed cotton maxi I bought from the Air Ambulance (or the Ambo) charity shop on Friday. It was made in England for Shelana, a long-defunct British boutique label, and is in pristine condition, I don't think it's ever been worn. An absolute bargain at £5!

I bought these earrings from a boutique in Santorini - they were handmade on the island using stainless steel and lava, I love them! When you're travelling with only a handful of dresses a new pair of earrings makes your ultra light packing feel fresh and exciting.

On Sunday we went for our usual morning charity shop run - dropping off a bag of books and coming home with a few more. I'd not worn this vintage 1970s Kate Beaver maxi dress for months. Handprinted in her studio in Dorset they're extremely rare and command £££s online. This cost me 99p from a charity shop about ten years ago! Whenever it features on my blog I get messages from people pleading with me to sell it - sorry but this baby ain't going nowhere!

These amazing boots were a measly £3 from the clearance chazza in the Spring, the wooden pendant was my Mum's in the 1970s and the 1960s Italian-made hand-rolled acetate scarf was a recent charity shop find. As one of the volunteers told me when I took it to the till with my £1 coin, that print couldn't be more you.

On Monday I had a couple of appointments at Walsall Manor, one for a field test and a follow-up visit with the ophthalmologist, all's good with my glaucoma and I don't need to go back for another twelve months. Everyone at the hospital was in raptures over my outfit, a vintage wool housecoat (a gift from friends, G'n'T) , my charity shopped Aldo fedora (now in its 7th year) and the Art Nouveau belt from the clearance chazza.

This very early Anokhi jacket was snaffled for less than £20 from Ebay during the height of the Summer. Someone's taken it in - my body double, I think - it fits me perfectly! The tiny vintage atomiser pendant was bought at Womad from my friend Caroline at Pilgrims Fairtrade (website HERE

It's the calm before the storm, by all accounts we've got some shocking weather forecast for tomorrow. I wore this All About Aud sale dress with my vintage Phool quilted jacket and secondhand Toast cowboy boots for this morning's swim (well, to walk down to the baths, I wear a swimsuit in the water!)

This Accessorize hat complete with feathered band was a clearance charity shop buy a couple of days before we went to End of the Road. A girl can never have too many hats.

I've not shared a Lidl £1.50 Waste Not box for ages, here's last week's!

Normally I'll type an ingredient into Google for recipe suggestions but I snaffled this book from a charity shop a few weeks ago and it's absolutely brilliant. Not that you have to be vegan to enjoy it - I'm a  vegetarian and Jon's an omnivore. Based on the premise that people already have flour, oil, salt and black pepper in their cupboards, all the recipes are, like the cover suggests, made using five ingredients and in the case of the delicious beer bread pictured below, often less. Interested? Second hand copies are readily available on Abebooks.

We loved the parsnip & chickpea tagine

And the carrot cake porridge is a game changer..

The cauliflower cheese soup is really tasty

The Santorini tomato fritters are as good as any that we enjoyed on our travels...

The vegan sausage and bean casserole with colcannon mash was perfect for last night's freezing temperatures.

And the olive oil & lemon shortbread is a revelation.

And I'm not on commission, honest!

I'll leave you with William. We keep warning him not to wander too far just in case somebody's tempted to steal him for a Hallowe'en prop. He looks really chunky but he's the same weight as he's been for months according to my Wii Fit, it must be his Winter coat!

See you soon.

  1. Oh what fabulousness! All wonderful outfits but I think my two favourites are the Kate Beaver dress and the striped housecoat dress. Loved the boots you bought; what a bargain! The dishes you made look and sound delicious; especially the shortbread. Oh me and my sweet tooth....I found a Lidl veg box when we were in Ireland the first week we arrived. Haven't seen one here since I got back!

We've been lighting the fire in the evenings for a few days now so it's definitely Autumn. Plus woke up this morning to drifts of leaves on the pavement.

William does look chunky but what a glossy coat and what a handsome lad he is!

    1. Thanks, Vronni! Much as I dislike the colder months I love being able to wear my hats and boots again.
That shortbread was really good, it vanished very quickly. I claimed to make it for Jon but I had more than my fair share.
We've ordered our wood but so have just been putting the heating on for an hour and making do with cardis and woolie socks in the house. We've ankle deep in leaves with all the trees in the garden but every time I say I'm off to sweep them up it starts raining! xxx

  2. William does look a Chonka indeed! Glad he's looking all plush!
I do like your new dress and that Anokhi jacket was a bargain!
I can't believe the change in weather. I'm into my corduroy trousers for school this week as they are good for cycling! Kx

    1. Hello Kezzie! He is a little chonka, all the better for cuddling on a cold morning.
It's mad how much the temperature dropped, I love cord and velvet but I'd rather be in my sundresses! xxx

  3. How fab to catch up with your latest wardrobe arrangements. I often think I have too many clothes, but they're virtually all second hand.
I'm in the process of sorting out my winter clothes, though like you I wear a lot of stuff all year round. I really should be used to our weather, but once again, Autumn has caught me by surprise!
I've had a few good cookbooks from the chazzers, and if I find I'm not really using them I just redonate. That one looks excellent.
I love your new dress. What a bargain!

    1. Hello Annie! I sometimes feel a bit guilty for having so many clothes but they give me so much pleasure - the finding and the wearing - that the guilt doesn't last for long!
I can't believe how quickly the temperatures changed, I was hoping for a couple of weeks of block printed dresses, quilted waistcoats and boots rather than coats, scarves and gloves! Ah well, maybe next year will be better! xxx

  4. Wow all that veg - we pay that for one parsnip or one brocolli in NZ. A big pat for William please.

    1. William enjoyed his virtual pat! I know, fruit & veg prices are creeping up here. Those boxes are amazing value. xxx

  7. That veg box is amazing. William is so handsome. I love a black cat, none here meet that qualification. We have three full-time and provide daily cat-care for my son's cat. He loves it but some of our girls are not so crazy about him.

    1. Thanks, Marjorie! It's funny but the fruit and veg in the box often have more flavour than the "fresh" produce on the shelves - or maybe it's the price that makes us see it through rose tinted glasses!
William is gorgeous. There's a chap we know in the next street who has five cats but is desperate for a black one - I'm glad William stopped off at our house first! xxx

  8. William is the poster-cat for Halloween, imagine a dark night and all you see are those eyes, that would scare the bejesus out of me. The Kate Beaver dress is everything I love about 1970s fashion, cotton, hand-printed, made locally, and the colours are sublime.

    1. Hello gang! It's always lovely to hear from you. I shall take not and ask Lord Jon to take a back view - he can be a bit grumpy about being made to take outfit photos so I shall attempt to twist his arm!
Lidl is a German discount supermarket chain (like your Aldi). Every morning the store manager will put fruit & veg which is starting to get past its best in a box and charges £1.50 per box. You never know what you're going to get so it's exciting to get home, open it and plan recipes! They're very popular and great value! Sending you lots of love from Lord Jon & Vix xxx

  10. Oh, William is just a fuzzy little gumdrop! What a beauty he is! I love seeing all your fabulous dresses - I laughed at the Kate Beaver "issue" of people trying to buy it off you, as I keep getting emails with people trying to buy my Craig Morrison Bug Bag - I've been offered hundreds for it!

Your vegan cookbook was a good "investment", wasn't it? That food looks lovely, please come cook for me! :-P

That Bug Bag was amazing, I'm not surprised you get silly offers for that like I do with the Kate Beaver.
I'd happily come and cook for you, when shall I pop over? xxx

  11. Your dresses this week are enviable and the Anokhi jackets are so versatile, I noticed your lovely Afghan coat hanging up too - they are back in fashion (if they ever went out) and inferior fashion copies are in Superdry but nothing like the real thing. I am surprised how many boots you have, it takes me ages to find anything comfy as I have a bit of my heel missing (teenage motorbike crash) but when I do I wear them to death. Santorini earings are very pretty and hand made always makes things feel very satisfying. William looks fat and fluffy and well cared for. Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! I saw those Afghans in Superdry, they just don't look right do they? I think Joe Browns did one about four years ago, too. I wish I still had my Mum's (Dad threw it in the bin when he started to lose his mind).
Only two pairs of boots were bought new, I'm really lucky in charity shops/eBay. There's nothing worse than uncomfortable footwear. I've got osteoarthritis in both big toes, it used to be sporadic but it's got worse recently. xxx

    2. Hello Elaine! Wow, that's a brilliant link, I've marked it to favourites, thanks for the inspiration! William did have a lovely collar in claret velvet to compliment his Winter attire but he lost it when he was out with his mates the other night.
Much as I love my summer gear it's lovely to reach for the velvet, padded jackets & waistcoats and the suede, isn't it? Hope your boots aren't too costly! xxx

  13. William is just too beautiful. He reminds me a bit of Binx, the cat from Hocus Pocus, like he might start talking at any moment. I'm so nosey, I love the tours of your wardrobes, and the treasures that they contain. That Anokhi quilted jacket is just too beautiful and it looks amazing on you. xx

    1. Thanks Louise! I had to Google Hocus Pocus but you're right, Binx is William's twin. I think I might have to watch the film! I couldn't believe I was the only bidder from the Anokhi jacket, mind you the auction ended on a hot sunny day when most normal people probably aren't thinking of cold weather clothing! xxx

  14. It’s all change in our winter wardrobes, but I have to have a clear out. I would love a Japanese padded kimono jacket that’s an outdoor winter jacket and are mega expensive.
I would love another cookbook, but hubby is convinced I just like collecting them! But I am starting to nest again, so I might get one under the radar! Love and hugs Allie jane

    1. Hello Allie! I sold a Japanese padded kimono jacket to a lovely blogger a few years ago, I'd never seen one before and it looked amazing on her. I don't often buy cookbooks but I loved the idea of five ingredient dishes - no faff, not too much washing up! Jon made a leek & mushroom pot pie from the book last night, he even decorated the lids with pastry roses - he's never used pastry before! Hope all's good with you, Paul & the soon-to-be-bigger family! xxx

  15. I'm loving the peek inside your wardrobes, and of course all of your outfits are absolutely fabulous as always. Plus, you do manage to find the best things in the chazzas! Case in point that amazing vintage 1970s Kate Beaver maxi dress! My other favourite is the one with the vintage housecoat and Anokhi Jacket. I'm also loving the Santorini earrings, which are just stunning.
Good news about your glaucoma being under control! I had to go back to the eye clinic on Monday and was told that the eye drops are definitely helping: my field test for my left eye was better than it was last time. My right eye still isn't affected so no eye drops for that one yet. Phew! xxx

    1. Thanks so much, Ann! Much as I hate to see the end of Summer, packing away my lightweight gear creates a lot more room in my wardrobes and I can see the wood for the trees.
That Kate Beaver dress came from that town full of charity shops I told you about years ago, one day you may find her sister!
I'm so glad your glaucoma symptoms are improving in your left eye and that the right eye isn't in need of treatment. There's been so many cock-ups with my appointments & field tests I was starting to think I'd go blind! xxx

    1. Thanks Olivia! We live in a very old-fashioned area so I don't get much competition from other shoppers when I'm in the charity shops. I'll often ponder over something for a week and it'll still be there when I go back - a sign it was meant to be.
That cookery book really is excellent, full of straightforward and tasty inspiration.
William is such a pretty boy, he's constantly being cuddled. xxx

  17. Kathryn (without the Ancients!)Wednesday, October 18, 2023

Greetings from St Louis! Just got on here to drop a note and I see that the not-so-nimble fingers of the Ancients have been at my poor computer. Let's just add that I also enjoy your fashions! (And Clyde really does do a number on my "machine", most notably during your last trip. The gang had to wait DAYS for me to get set up so they could see what you were up to!
