Yasou Halkidiki!

Kalimera, one and all! When I signed off just over a week ago, we were about to jet off to the Halkidiki peninsula on the Greek mainland on what was to be our first package holiday in years. After walking to the station we caught the train to Birmingham International, dropped off our bag, had our customary pint in Wetherspoons before we boarded our TUI flight.

Our departure had been delayed for two and half hours and with the two hour time difference by the time we'd passed through arrivals at Thessaloniki airport it was 10.30pm. We were directed to our coach and ninety minutes later the driver came to a halt, pointed out a rough track and told us that our accommodation, Ammos, was at the end of it. After negotiating a series of broken stone steps down a steep cliff in total darkness we discovered, to our dismay, that the hotel was locked up for the night and the sign outside read Amminos not Ammos, it was the wrong bloody one! With no contact details for TUI we turned to our phones discovering that our correct destination was just over two kilometres away. Luckily, only having a small bag between us, Jon & I were able to help carry the luggage of Alan, a widower in his 80s and Carla, a young woman travelling with her two year old son. It was quite a spectacle, a gaggle of tourists dragging suitcases along the main road in the early hours of the morning. The few locals around couldn't resist whipping out their phones to record the sight (after confirming that we were heading in the right direction). Between us we agreed that although it wasn't the greatest start to our holiday it couldn't have been a better way to get to know each other.*

When we reached Ammos we were warmly welcomed by owner Christina and her twin daughters who asked where on earth we'd been, they'd expected us over three hours ago. TUI hadn't even bothered to let them know that our flight had been delayed! Excitement over, we bade our fellow guests (and new friends) goodnight, unpacked our bags and sat on the balcony drinking wine until late into the night.

Anyway delays and coach cock-ups aside, on to the holiday. Ammos is one of TUI's Small & Friendly destinations and despite only being a two-star it's the top rated place to stay in the area. With 24 self-catering apartments with a swimming pool (not that we used it - who needs a pool when you've got the crystal clear Aegean on your doorstep?) As a base it suited us perfectly - a balcony, a functioning shower, a comfy bed, somewhere to hang our clothes and all we needed to prepare our fruit and yoghurt breakfasts, make tea and keep our rum & cola cold. The rooms were cleaned every day and the beach, tavernas and supermarket were a few minutes walk away.

The Halkidiki peninsula in the prefecture of Macedonia is divided into three prongs, Mount Athos, Sithonia and Kassandra. We stayed on the westernmost peninsula, Kassandra in the town of Polychrono which, in ancient times, was known as Neopolis.

Surrounded by pine forests, Polychrono has a seven kilometre long, white sand beach. Many of the town's nine hundred residents are also farmers and we met lots of men called Demetrius (named in honour of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest). Every house in the town seemed to have a tractor parked outside! By law all buildings have to have a terracotta tiled roof and not exceed three storeys making the view very easy on the eye!

We'd been to the Greek mainland twice before, earlier this year when we'd travelled to Athens and over twenty years ago when we'd spent a blissful fortnight in Agios Ionnis in Pelion (but since discovering that Stanley Johnson owns property there we've been put off from ever returning for fear of bumping into BoJo in a pair of budgie smugglers).

As always I'd spent ages researching Halkidiki before we booked, pouring over travel forums and review sites and giggling at the comments. When I read complaints about the lack of English newspapers & TV channels, nowhere to get a curry and - my favourite - a dreadful place, they wouldn't turn the TV on so we could watch the rugby and it was full of cats - I had a feeling Polychrono was the place for us!

One comment I read was that the beach wasn't up to much. Obviously the annual Blue Flag Award wasn't good enough.

Apparently it was too busy and you couldn't find anywhere to sit...

And the sea was too cold for swimming....

Funny that, we managed quite okay.

The funniest had to be that Halkidiki didn't look very Greek.

Blue shutters, cats galore, olive groves, Orthodox churches, stone houses, pots of geraniums, terracotta tiles, gingham table cloths, painted wicker chairs....what were they expecting, Jason & The Argonauts, Nana Mouskouri and the cast of Mamma Mia?

I'll be back soon very soon to let you know whether there was any truth in the comment There's nothing to see and nothing to do in Halkidiki.

*As an act of goodwill, as soon as TUI heard about the driver's error they immediately refunded all fifteen of us 12% from the cost of the holiday.

  1. Yassas Vix, all looks pretty Greek to me! I especially like the marmalade cat (I think you may have woken him up!) by the pot of scented geranium, the wildflowers and painted tins of daisies. Cannot wait to see what you got up too. Hope you have sunshine and warmth in the Midlands, down south it’s been shorts and cycling and picnic weather, sitting outside at aperitif time and wandering down the meadow at sunset to watch the bats come out to play. 1. Hello Sarah! I felt a bit guilty waking up that slumbering puss. I'm unable to pass a cat in the street without having a chat or getting my camera out.
The weather's been glorious here, too. I do love bat watching, I've not seen any in our garden this year but I was excited to discover a family of Great Tits in one of the nesting boxes when we got home! xxxx

  3. Oh my, what a start to your holiday!
I'm glad to hear you made it to the right hotel in the end, and that you received such a warm welcome.
The place looks absolutely delightful and very Greek. I simply can't believe those quiet, empty beaches!
Can't wait to read what you've been up to.
Oh, and very decent of TUI to give you that refund! xxx

    1. I know, talk about a memorable start to the holiday. I didn't expect to be compensated and we all made sure we spent the cash in the local tavernas.
I do despair of people sometimes, it makes you wonder where they usually go if they thought those beaches weren't up to much! xxx

  5. Well, that was an eventful start to your holiday wasn't it? I'm glad you made it there safely in the end, and what a beautiful place. It looks like paradise. As I start bracing myself for Scarborough beach days, sharpening my elbows and cringing at the amount of other people that will be on the beach over the summer, I dream of a deserted beach like the one there. Absolutely perfect! I can't wait to hear the rest of your adventures. xx

    1. I had to laugh at the comments about the beaches, I was thinking they'd be like the UK beaches were during lockdown when everyone descended on them and left mountains of litter behind. I think I spotted one beer can (which we picked up) the whole time we were there! xxx

  6. Interesting beginning to your trip! As usual, you and Lord Jon turned the challenges into an adventure rather than a whine fest! Most holidays have at least some moments that are less than stellar, but the way we handle them makes a difference, doesn't it?

And it definitely does look Greek to me! I love that their building code limits the height of buildings. It's sufficient to create space in homes and commercial buildings without being overwhelming or swallowing the views.

Looking forward to your next installment!

    1. Hello Taja! You're so right, some people would have dwelt on the what could have happened but, as always, we saw the funny side and it was all but forgotten about by the following morning. we didn't expect compensation for a silly mistake.
Halkidiki definitely does look Greek. We love the building restrictions, if only more countries would adopt them. xxx

  8. Oh my gosh, the pictures have me swooning, Vix! So gorgeous! I gasped that the driver just left you all...at the entrance to the wrong hotel! I'm glad you were compensated for that huge inconvenience. I always read the comments, and they are often these sort of entitled things - I remember the complaints about our hotel in Venice ("no elevator!" - well, duh, those are very rare there). They can help prepare you, though, but how do you not expect cats in Greece?

Looking forward to seeing the next part! Thank you so much for sharing these with us!

I love reading reviews and the ridiculous comments on travel forums. there's currently a huge argument on a Corfu fanpage I belong to with people outraged that there isn't a branch of McDonald's on the island.
Knowing the place is overrun with cats is the best reason to visit.
No elevators in Venice! Brilliant! xxxx

  9. It looks a beautiful place to me and as it’s not full of other people it’d suit us just fine.
We’ve just had lunch in Manchester with Philip’s American cousin who has come over for a family wedding. We couldn’t get back up the top of our hill quick enough, Manchester was rammed with folk. Not our thing at all haha. Give us a few sheep, the birds and the trees any day haha. Xxx

  10. Looks absolutely gorgeous, nice and unspoilt just how I like it. Years ago, before children we went on a gulet cruise around some of the Greek islands and we docked at some lovely places. I particularly liked Symi and would love to go back one day.

  11. Ah yes, good old Tui, we know them so well - we have booked many a package with them, just like you, because it's cheaper than diy sad to say. They do have an app to download so you can contact their work from home, not anywhere near you rep of course. It's really very much sort yourself out with them - our latest trippet was a base just like you, we use it for a decent bed (I always check mattresses for hairs etc am obsessed), breakfast, clean toilet, somewhere to sit when it rains, useful bar when nothing else will do. This latest trip they advertised on their website an outdoor pool - well in a city that looked very important so we chose that one and of course there wasnt one (we knew that from reading Tripadvisor, but they spent 2 weeks verifying it with the third party agent who had to take all the blame, they have promised (yet to receive) a refund of £148 so we look forward to that. Enough said they do have some nice places and if you don't follow the herd once you get there, it's usually a good choice. As always you have found the places that 'look Greek' and probably had a much better time than most of your travelling companions because you venture out/explore. Looking forward to next installment. 1. Welcome home, Betty! I've been loving your travelogue and shall be commenting once I've caught up with my blog comments.
You're right, it was half the price to book a TUI package than it was to DIY, I'd much rather be independant and then any cock-ups are due to our own ineptitude rather than someone else's (and far less frustrating!) I couldn't believe that they still have rep's meetings and try and flog you trips - not that we bothered going - but I think it was the rest of the party raising hell that landed us all the refund.
The pool situation was very poor, I hope they sort out the refund soon.
Our next trip is back to Ryannair and Booking.Com! xxx

  12. Oh God, sometimes I despair of our countrymen and women. Halkidiki looks wonderful! Glad to hear you got a refund from TUI.

We had a similar experience in Bulgaria. The taxi driver dropped us off at about 01.30am on what looked liked a beach; pointed to a flight of steep stone steps rising up the cliff face and told us the hotel was at the top. It was boiling hot even at that time of night and we had a huge suitcase between us and 2 carry on pieces of luggage. We made it up the steps and spent about 2 hours walking about looking for the hotel; people we spoke to didn't understand us; we didn't speak Bulgarian. We couldn't get through to the hotel on the phone and when we did we couldn't understand one another. We kept ending up in the same square; finally by some stroke of luck I spotted the hotel name down a side street - one we'd walked down at least 10 times before; we arrived at about 3.30 am

Looking forward to hearing more about your Greek adventures...

I do despair of our fellow countrymen (and women) sometimes. The bunch we were with were really nice but I had to snigger when I heard them all complaining about how none of the tavernas had any brown sauce on the tables! xxx

  13. Oh dear, oh dear! As soon as I started reading, I regretted my comment on your last post. We have had similar situations going independent, which was why I was supporting package deals, but it was a proper jinx! So glad it worked out well in the end, and that TUI played fair. Look forward to seeing the rest of your trip xxx

Hello Annie, believe me, we've had more than our share of DIY disasters that's why we soon saw the funny side of the wrong hotel drop off - it certainly beat turning up at a hotel in Tamil Nadu at 2am in the morning and discovering they'd let out your room and having to spend the night in someone's storeroom! xxx

  16. It looks amazing, and how good of TUI to give you all 12% back ... it could be the deposit for your next flight with another company. ;-)

It's a good way to get to know your travelling companions, and the gaggle of Brits trailing through the streets so late at night will have given the local something to talk about in the tavernas.

I love reading the whinging comments from previous holiday makers ... I'm so pleased you managed to find somewhere to sit on that crowded beach ... phew!!

  17. Blimey Riley I'm glad it all came good in the end! I howled with laughter over the reviews/comments - those complaining about it being too foreign and the cuisine (not English) are my personal faves lol. Deary me. Next time - nick a photo of the accommodation/signage off the website and show it to your taxi driver - we've done it for travel in the UK before now ...

Hope you've recovered from those crowded beaches xx

In other news our £1.50 Lidl bargain boxes are a revelation this week. I got a punnet of apricots, 3 passion fruit, 2 limes, 4 small oranges, 4 baking spuds and 2 iceberg lettuce! However I cannot find cabbage anywhere and I paid £2 for a medium head of broccoli on the market last week.

    1. What an amazing week to be away in Blue Bus, you lucky thing! You're so right about the reviews helping you find the perfect place, away from the idiots. We once stayed in this delightful apartment in Kos where someone had marked it as 1/5 as there wasn't a spatula in the kitchen and her holiday had been ruined. The owner replied, "my dear lady, if your happiness depends upon the availability of a spatula I think it's a therapist you need rather than a holiday!" xxx
