New Kid on the Block

On Wednesday the sun was shining so I decided to give my fabulous Indian block printed Kharibu skirt its first outing. I thought I'd send a picture of me wearing it to Yaz, the label's founder, and was immensely flattered when she asked if she could use my photo on her social media.

HERE'S Kharibu's website. I'm not sponsored. In the words of my friend Sheila, I'm sharing 'cos I love!

I wore it with a vintage Ayesha Davar cheesecloth blouse and embroidered Indian waistcoat, charity shopped Timberland boots, Monsoon fedora and a stack of vintage brass & copper jewellery collected over the years.

Liz joined us for a trip to Roger's of Bilston, recommended by our friends Lynn & Brendan, a warehouse open to the public and specialising in out-of-date prepackaged food and drink, sold in bulk quantities. We were blown away by the prices and fantastic range of goodies - our trolley was groaning under the weight of black olives, wholemeal quinoa, organic artisan dark chocolate, tinned tomatoes, pea pasta, dried seeds & nuts, lentil crisps, tinned pinto and borlotti beans, kefir & lime salad dressing & organic tomato and caper sauce. If you're in the West Midlands and have room in your cupboards, get yourself down there now, there's no minimum spend & you don't have to be a member! Find them HERE.

Needless to say, we popped into the charity shops on the way home. Here's this week's finds: 1980s Liberty print blouse; a 1970s Japanese dagger collar shirt; a 1960s wool cape; a 1980s Hawaiian shirt; a pair of retro logo Wrangler tee shirts; a wool fedora (for me!); a 1960s Christie's fedora; a 1980s Peter Bettley straw hat; a Mexican cowboy hat; a 1960s Christie's tweed hat; 1990s velvet hot pants; 1980s novelty fish jumper; 1970s Indian block print wrap skirt; 1990s Fine Furs faux fur gilet; Tiered gypsy skirt; 1980s Simon Ellis beaded cocktail dress; Gingham cotton maxi dress; 1990s Italian pink leather coat and a Patricia *Sex & The City* Field sequin cocktail dress.

I wore my skirt again on Thursday for an early morning swim & 'Spoons. This time combining it with some chazza shopped cowboy boots, a recycled sari silk wrap top (All About Audrey, bought in 2018) and more secondhand costume jewellery.

We spent the rest of the day pottering around outside under the watchful eye of young William.

In the words of Keith Richards, if it's worth doing then it's worth overdoing, so this morning, I once again reached for my new skirt.

This time combining it with a vintage Ayesha Davar cheesecloth blouse, a 1960s fringed suede waistcoat, a charity shopped hat and fringed suede boots and, as always, a shedload of jewellery picked up on my travels.

We headed off into Walsall for the matinee performance of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry  which was every bit as wonderful as the book.

Lucky Lord Jon snaffled these uber hip (and ethically made) Veja Wata II plimsolls on the way home from the swimming baths yesterday (they retail at £110, he paid £7).

Prior to the release of Asteroid City in June, Walsall Light are screening a Wes Anderson season. Be still my beating heart! I can watch his films over and over and over again and as soon as I got home I booked seats for all of them.

It's yet another Bank holiday weekend. I've poured myself a large glass of White Zinfandel, there's a veggie curry simmering away on the range and an evening of The Wire to look forward to.

Thanks for all your cat carsickness advice, wish us luck for our trip to the vet tomorrow morning!

  1. Your new skirt is a beauty! I love the three outfits you created with it!
That Food Place sounds amazing! I'd like to visit that! My local market does out of date stuff cheaply which is nice to visit if I get the chance but not as posh as that!
    Jon's new trainers are fab!!

    1. Thanks, Kezzie! I'm mad about the skirt, I want to wear it all the time.
Roger's is amazing, there was so much good stuff. We had to restrain ourselves or we wouldn't have had room to store it in the house.
I've wanted a pair of Vejas for years especially as there's a V on the side. I was so jealous they were his size! xxx

  3. I love that you’ve got multiple uses out of that gorgeous skirt.
We went to see the same film on Wednesday and loved it too. I’ve read the follow up books as well, have you. Don’t think they’ll make films out of them though. I thought the casting was spot on.
Have a lovely weekend your two xx

    1. Wasn't it fantastic? I was pleased to see that Rachel Joyce had written the screenplay, I always think a film based on a book loses a certain something if the writer isn't involved. We've read The Love Song of Queenie Hennessey and loved that, I hadn't realised there was a Maureen book too until i just Googled it. I'll have to track a copy down!
Have a fabulous weekend, too! Love to you both! xxx

  4. Hope that William is okay tomorrow. Maybe a blanket over his basket may lull him into a nap.
Love your skirt, it's a beauty. Jon's trainers are fab! Good price too. Our charity shops charge a lot for very worn shoes, dunno if anyone buys them tho.

    1. Thanks so much, Carole. We're a bit nervous about tomorrow, we're feeding him up tonight so he's not demanding food tomorrow before the V-E-T!
Our chazzas are pretty good for shoe pricing although they do put some awfully tatty ones out on the shelves. Like you, I'm not sure who on earth would buy them unless there's a lot of foot fetishists out there! xxx

  5. Yay! A well deserved shout out by Kharibu! The skirt is divine and you are wise to make the most of it with our topsy turvy weather!
Roger's sounds like a fantastic place and not just pound shop food either!
You're in for a treat aren't you with Wes Anderson season screening. You would like the Accidentally Wes Anderson book. It's a great coffee table book and there are used copies available on eBay.
Fingers crossed for William tomorrow. xxx

    1. I thought that if I waited for the weather to improve I'd never wear that skirt! I love it when people send me photos of them wearing things they've bought from us so I hoped Yaz would appreciate it, too. I was very flattered that she liked the photo enough to share it!
Roger's is fantastic, some seriously good brands. There's an amazing range of mixers and cordials and alcohol-free drink from Brew Dog, Sipsmiths and Fentimans, too - I had no idea that food shopping could be exciting!
I've just looked at that Wes Anderson book, I shall keep my eyes peeled for a cheapie. I never get tired of watching his films, the first time it's all about the story and the next ten are about wallowing in the colour and beauty (and fabulous soundtracks!)
I tried everything - including no food, Pet Remedy and a towel over his box as well as doing what we did last time, me sitting next to his carrier on the back seat talking to him, lining the carrier with Jon's worn tee shirt, adding a catnip mouse and a few Dreamies ane he was still traumatised. On the way home I took him out of his box and let him roam around the car till he was comfy, eventually settling behind me on the parcel shelf. He still drooled like mad but didn't cry. Bless him! xxx

  6. thinking of you tomorrow. Good luck to William too. Hope all goes well. Just collected a script for more tablets for Archie bless him. Love your outfits and love every blouse you have paired the skirt with. Want to see that film - thought it would be good. Hey raise a glass tonight for my Mum in Aus. 93! have a great long week-end. We both loved Harold Fry, do go and see it is you can. Jim Broadbent & Penelope Wilton were both outstanding, as usual!
Sending your lovely mum my very best wishes for her 93rd birthday, what an incredible lady she is. I shall belatedly raise a glass to her later - chin chin! xxx

  7. I so agree with Keith Richards - and love every iteration of your new Kharibou skirt, Vix (and thank you for the kind shout-out, mwah, you're a dear). Aw, look at sweet William, snoozing in his catio - I hope the vet trip is not too traumatizing for the dear boy.

Love the Wrangler t-shirts - those smack of 1981 to me! I remember the cool kids (not me!) wearing them.

Enjoy your long weekend, dear friends!

    1. Keith speaks a lot of sense, as do you! I'm so relieved that William's ordeal's over. He's finally gone to sleep on the chaise after eating us out of house and home since he got back!
I wished those Wrangler tees were my size, they'd look amazing with a vintage maxi skirt and trainers. We sold a 1970s Wrangler denim jacket to a woman at a festival last year and she asked who Wrangler were as she'd never heard of them! The youth of today!
Weekend love back atcha, darling! xxxx

  8. Wonderful skirt, I love anything coloured orange so am envious! Surprising how many things it will go well with too - will take a look at the website. The catio is really nice and you have made it really cosy inside, I think Mollie would like one as she's so nervous outside - some kids about 2 roads away were screaming in the garden yesterday (playing) and she was cowering and came in making a strange rumbling noise like a growl, I have never heard a cat do that before - clearly doesn't like kids. Hope the trip to the vet went well. Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! I love those warm ochre tones, they seem to go with anything.
I need a few more hanging plants in the catio and to move the solar fairy lights around the top. It was a mild night yesterday and William had a lovely couple of hours lounging on the platform watching the foxes - safe and sound. I bet Mollie would love a catio especially with loud children frightening her, it's a safe space that smells of home. There seems to be a lot of secondhand ones out there (Facebook Marketplace is great) or if Mr Betty is handy he could knock one up for her! xxx PS The vet was very pleased with William's progress but he absolutely hated the journey there!

  10. Love the skirt. I have gone back to black as ac dc would say. I have always been alternative and a bit of a goth. And my son is rapidly approaching one so I thought why on earth not. I will still keep my colours and add them here and there. The blue hair as you well know will still be here. But I decided since I am heading towards 50 and my last chance to add the 6th addition to my family. Back to black it is.
I did some clearance homewares shopping on killstar which my mum has . She is in disparity of me lol.
My brother goes to the company shop as he works in the NHS and gets good value food . Keep safe and well love and hugs Allie

    1. Hello Allie. Well, with your blue hair and unique style even in black you'll never be in any danger of fading into the background. A 6th addition to the family, woman you have some serious stamina! Much love top you and the family (and Milo!) xxxx

  11. The catio looks amazing in situ, and William appears to be quite at home.
    Your skirt is beautiful. Xx

  12. Ooooh that skirt - love that colour and it looks wonderful with your hair Vix! You need to scoot the skirt waistband up under your arms and wear it as a long top - all of my skirts do double-duty that way! I really would like the dress in that colour/print but there's no way I can justify another frock - I am resolved.

Mind you, I just bought a jacket off eBay (I put two in the charity shop bag) by a brand called The Shop - their website is quite delightful.
https://www.theshopindia.com/our-story and the homeware is epic. Sorry :)

We all need a Young William - a young cat of property now - I love seeing him lounging around looking handsome in the catio lol

    Homemade chippy tea awaits!

    1. Hello Elaine! Great thinking with the skirt, I'll try that next time. I was very tempted with the dress in the same colourway but thought I might get more wear from the skirt.
I know The Shop, I've been in their store in Fort Cochin, gorgeous swag and very pricey. I shall try not to click on the link....
William's loving his catio although he's preferred to spend most of the day lolling on the chaise with the occasional foray into the kitchen, not that I blame him, it's vile out there!
      Enjoy your fakeaway! xxx

    2. I couldn't believe it when I saw the jacket - it's one of the reversible, lightly-quilted, block-print ones - two other sellers have similar used ones on for £60+ - and this seller made an offer of £18. I am bewitched by the bedlinens on that website ... don't look xxx

    3. That's amazing! I remember admiring a jacket like that in the shop and it was over £100, obviously geared up for the very posh people who stay in the boutique hotels rather than the backpacker-y homestays like ours! I daren't look! xxx

  13. What a beautiful skirt and the three outfits you created with it were lovely. I really loved the embroidered waistcoat, too.

I had no idea they'd made a film of 'Harold Fry'; I enjoyed the book and have another book by her still to read - something like 'Miss Benson's Beetle'? I assume it's about a car but I'll find out when I read it on my Kindle eventually.

You did so well at the chazzas especially for hats! I have my eye on the tired maxi skirt...Jon's new pumps are fab.

A season of Wes Anderson's films sounds wonderful. Enjoy.

    1. Thanks, Vronni! I was dithering between the teal skirt and the chre one and I'm delighted with my choice.
I hadn't heard of the Harold Fry film either, Jon spotted it advertised. I read The Love Song of Queenie Hennessey after The Unlikely Pilgrimage but I see there's also Maureen Fry's story as well as the beetle one, I shall track them down on Abebooks if I don't encounter them in the chazzas, rachel Joyce is a captivating writer. xxx

  14. I'm not at all surprised you reach for that fabulous Kharibu skirt three days running. I was swooning over it when you first introduced it and knew it wouldn't be all too long before we'd see you wearing it on the blog. A triple treat, as I love all three of the outfits you created with it, perhaps the first one most of all.
Roger's sounds amazing, and I'm loving the sound of that film.
It looks like William is feeling quite at home in his catio! Hopefully all went well today! xxx

Roger's was fantastic. We might have inadvertently wandered across the boss filming a video of the latest stock drop for Tik Tok!
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was a wonderful read and the film definitely did it justice. The Brits certainly know how to make good films.
William has been very clingy after his vet visit, he hated the journey but is so funny when he's out of the carrier, probably because the vet makes such a fuss of him. xxx
