Bank Holiday Shenanigans

Hello! It feels like an age since I last checked in. Hope all's well in your world. Here's how I've been filling my time.

Saturday was another glorious day and after a Mushroom Benedict breakfast, courtesy of Lord Jon as opposed to Wetherspoons, I pulled on a pair of shorts and tackled a corner of the garden which, during Lockdown, I'd attempted to make into a wild flower bed but has been taken over by Green Alkanet, a pretty but invasive weed. Fortunately the roots are shallow so by midday the area was clear and I spent the day reading in the sunshine watching Jon labouring away on Gilbert.

Tea was a very tasty yellow-stickered curried chickpea pie from Lidl with carrots, peas and some roasted red onions and potatoes.

The previous evening we'd started watching Faking Hitler (Walter Presents) the subtitled German series based on the true story of the notorious Hitler Diaries of the 1980s and watched the rest with rum & cola later.

On Sunday morning, buoyed up by the glorious weather, I had a reshuffle of my wardrobe and wore this Seventies Soul Dahlia block printed Indian cotton dress for the first time since we visited Malaga for my birthday in December.

I caught the sun over the weekend....hooray...I'm always more "me" with a tan.

Also feeling Spring-like, Jon wore a short-sleeved fine knit.

We walked down to 'Spoons, Tony, working in retail, had got a rare Sunday off and an all-dayer was well overdue.

The pub was surprisingly quiet, we spent the day chatting, downing pints of lager and feasting on their fabulous pizzas. Their vegan pizzas are particularly delicious.

I'll hold my hands up and admit to having become one of those annoying people with a mobile phone taking selfies and food photos (although I don't immediately post them on social media - just on my blog a few days later!)

We emerged from the pub six hours later, blinking in the daylight like newly-hatched Easter chicks!

On Monday I was up at the crack of dawn, checked into the Wii Fit and brought mugs of tea back to bed where I lay and read for a couple of hours.

Despite Monday's forecast for atrocious weather, the rain had the decency to stop for a couple of hours enabling me to turn over the soil in the bed I'd cleared on Saturday. These G Brand American-made "Houlihan" combats retail at £199 but as I only paid £2 I'm not too precious about gardening in them (I tucked them into my wellies). No, I didn't wear these Morris & Co espadrilles for digging!

After a bowl of noodles I took myself upstairs, tuned into 6Music and photographed my Spring capsule wardrobe.....

Eight tops, four skirts....

Five jackets, four waistcoats....

And twenty-two dresses.

There's also my four suede coats as it's the UK and coats are pretty much essential all year round and I haven't bothered photographing my combats, shorts or jeans - they aren't very photogenic!

I've left eight pairs of boots on the shelf and looked out some of my canvas pumps/espadrilles to fill the gaps. There's also a brand new pair of sandals, bought from Clarks clearance sale, I'm hoping I can break them in ready for our next escape.

My Lotta from Stockholm collection hangs from the door all year round, hopefully I'll be wearing them before too long.

Tea was a Lidl vegetarian Wellington Jon found lurking in the freezer along with salad.

Our viewing was this gobsmacking true-life documentary currently on Amazon Prime (we've got a moth's free trial) - well worth a watch.

I finished my Pat Barker book in bed and selected my next read in readiness.

Tuesday (it feels like Monday) kicked off with a half-mile swim and breakfast in Spoons before popping into an almost deserted Lidl for a Waste Not box. This week £1.50 will buy you asparagus, mushrooms, sweetcorn, sugar snap peas, blueberries and black grapes - yum!

At 7.45am it was mild enough to walk down to the baths in a cotton midi dress (Dilli Grey via eBay) with my denim jacket over the top. I even left my leggings off.

My Reactions lenses mean I can wear my varifocals out and about in all weathers.

Back at home I swapped the Timberland boots for wellies, scraped my hair into a topknot, tucked my skirt in my knickers and got cracking in the garden.

I've decided to take inspiration from the Victorians and create a stumpery and with so many trees, it didn't take me long to fill the area with old tree stumps and discarded branches gathered from elsewhere in the garden.

People often ask me if I should be doing heavy lifting with a prosthetic hip, which makes me smile,

I'm not disabled, I'm bionic!

Once in situ, I wandered around the garden, digging up some ferns, a Fatsia, a couple of foxgloves and some cyclamens and planted them in the gaps. When the rain lets up I shall try daubing some of the wood with yogurt to encourage some moss and lichen.

This boy has been a regular visitor all weekend. We seem to have turned a corner and he's now coming into the kitchen for his food rather than gobbling it down on the doorstep. He loves being cuddled, kneads like a crazy thing and sticks his tongue out when he purrs.

Right, I'm off to catch up with Blogland before I meet up with the gang in the pub. A cheeky Indo-Nepali feast awaits!

See you soon.

      I could scream
      I miss him so much
And his funeral isn’t until the 28/4 which is such a long wait
And someone called me a Widow for the first time
      I hated it
      I will mourn him forever

    3. Oh my word, Siobhan, that's an awfully long time to have to wait for the funeral. As if you haven't been through enough already it seems so cruel to leave you in limbo like this. I wish i could do more than tell you that I'm thinking of you. xxx

    4. Vix, Siobhan and I have been connecting via email, trying to be a ledge for each other to lean on. It does mean the world to be held in kindness; being kept in people's positive thoughts adds to the security of that ledge.

  2. Sorry I haven't commented for ages. We've been away in Cornwall so I'm just catching up. We had a brilliant time, but the weather was truly awful. I really, really want some proper sun!
We've also been making good progress on renewing our garden for the coming season. We were down at the community garden at the library tidying up this morning. Just finished before the rain.
I absolutely love what you've done with your Frida jacket. Just fabulous. And that cap suits you perfectly.
It's hard to believe June is so close with the weather like this. Sorry to be banging on about it, but it's horrible. But I mustn't complain. We have our big trip to Japan in June, and your Glasto adventures to look forward to when we get back. 🙂 Xxx

    1. It's always lovely to hear from you, Annie and thanks for your kind comments! What a shame about the weather in Cornwall. It really has been a miserable Spring weather-wse. Imagine if Lockdown had been like that, we wouldn't have been quite so ready to stay at home!
Sorting out your garden as well as the community one is commendable. I'm surprised what progress we've made on ours after months of neglect. We're off to the family run nursery later to treat the garden to a few new plants.
It's sunny this morning but so cold it's evil. It looks like the thermals will be back on today.
I'm so excited about your trip to Japan, we'll have to meet up afterwards so i can hear all about it. xxx

  3. Well I'm thinking of moving to Walsall with your exotic climate and your summer ready tan. I've felt cold all day today!
Glad you managed some R&R over the weekend and I'm liking the stumpery idea. Your spring wardrobe is looking fabulous too!
I'm also chuffed that William has started making himself at home. I think he'll be back with his packed bags before much longer. He seems like a keeper! Judging by those claws, I'm relieved for your sake that he's such a mild mannered chap! xxx

    1. I'll have a word with the neighbours and see if I can persuade them to do a house swap! Mind you, it's very cold this morning despite the sunshine. I might have to drag the leggings back on when I go out later.
A stumpery would work well in your garden, you've certainly got access to lots of free wood.
They're talons, aren't they? He's got huge paws for such a small cat, he's going to be panther size when he's grown up. xxx

  6. Oh, look at that face! Dat face! The little tongue! You appear to have been adopted, Vix!

I love the idea of a stumpery - so cool. Please do keep us apprised of its progress.

Ooh, another capsule wardrobe, how exciting! I always love your outfits. Seems we were on the same page for a hang with the pals - don't you love those all-dayers?

  7. Well done for getting the legs out at the weekend, right now I am looking at snow on the tops of the fells (when I can get a glimpse through the clouds and rain).

Love your 'stumpery' which will provide home for millions of tiny things that we can barely see, and the birds will thank you greatly for the larder full of fresh nibbles.

Ditto Winter Peach & Kate - William looks like he has Made. A. Decision. Which is wonderful for you all - you always said the right four-paws would turn up when they were good and ready, xx

    1. Snow?! Ye gods! It's very chilly here this morning but it's dazzlingly bright so I can deal with it.
I felt a bit guilty about digging up the Alkanet although there's absolutely loads of it elsewhere in the garden but hopefully the stumpery will please a lot more of the wildlife. There were lots of woodlice on the stumps, no wonder we're inundated with sparrows this morning!
It's strange how William would even venture into the house ten days ago and now he's dining in the kitchen - real progress! xxx

  8. I just love how your capsule wardrobe includes 22 dresses. That is very restrained of you :)

  10. I'm swooning over your Spring capsule, and can't wait to see you wear it all. And oh my, aren't you giving Spring a run for her money in your Seventies Soul Dahlia block printed Indian cotton dress! Loving Jon's short-sleeved knit too.
It's nearly lunch time, so I'm salivating at seeing those 'Spoons pizzas!
I love seeing your collection of Lotta's and you've given me an idea for storing my sandals.
We've got a kind of mini stumpery - didn't know that's what they were called and that they're Victorian - as we have incorporated the dead wood of our former lilac tree into our garden. I thought it was a shame to get rid of it.
Aww, look at William! You're definitely making progress with him! xxx

    1. Thanks, Ann! I'm beginning to question my wisdom in creating a Spring wardrobe, it's absolutely freezing out there today!
It won't be long before you'll be tucking into a Spoons pizza.
Those canvas organisers are perfect for shoe storage. I'm tempted to use them for scarves and belts, too, beats tipping the basket upside down every morning.
Stumperies are so easy to create. I've invested in a few plants to add to mine but it's no weather for gardening today! xxx

  11. I need to read more about stumperys. I've a mess to figure out in my yard, but if that can make a nice visual, maybe a good route. We went from 10 inches of snow on April 1 to yesterday hitting 80°,F, 27°C yesterday, April 11. Crazy swings. My evenings will be filled with outside time, the dogs keeping me company, as I try and get winter tuck cleared. I bought a new fun pair of garden gloves to fully commit.

It sounds like Spring's finally arrived in your part of the world, Sam. There's little more therapeutic than spending time outdoors. A funky pair of gardening gloves sound like a great way to commit - maybe add some psychedelic Crocs to the mix? xxx

  12. Sounds like a fab weekend, Vix with the all-dayer. Its a shame it's gone so cold and rainy yet again! The fleeting sunshine gave us a lift! Mr W is absolutely gorgeous! He will have his furry paws under that table very soon. What beautiful fur and a good set of claws on him...and his little tongue....would love more cats but our usually very gentle rescue would not allow and chases next doors when they dare to jump over the fence! Had to look up what a stumpery was. It will be great for nature (no fake grass here) Louise (Midlands) X

    1. Hello Louise! You can't beat an all-dayer, they're the new all-nighters for us drinkers of a certain age! Those warm days seem like a distant memory after today, hasn't it been vile? Looking good for next week though.
Some cats are so territorial, aren't they? Stephen was a little sod , he accepted Frank when he turned up but bullied poor Kitty from next door until the end of his days.
If you ever get up to Biddulph Grange Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent you'll find the first ever stumpery, it's an amazing thing - mine isn't quite on that scale! xxx

Your capsule wardrobe is brimming with pattern and colour - I am envious of those lovely skirts, if only they would make things like this today. Did you see the Monsoon brochure for their 50th year? the collaboration with student designers in London and Delhi is just fabulous (the prices are eye watering though). The pub was the town's first free library (it opened in 1820). Wetherspoons are well known for saving derelict historical buildings and transforming them into pubs and hotels. They always include a nod to the buildings' past when they redecorate them. xxx

  17. Hi Vix. Love the blog, and I've browsed it for years. Cats, vintage stuff, gardening and books, what's not to like? By the way, if you're after a cracker of a book, can I recommend 'Demon Copperhead' by Barbara Kingsolver. It's only April, and I think that's already my Book of the Year.
Actually I have a question for you, if that's okay. I've bought a ebay bargain, a bundle of ties, several 100% silk. I do patchwork, so have plans for them. Some have never been worn, none are marked, but they've all got that 'vintage whiff'. Would you recommend washing them? Would steam cleaning help? Or just pegging them on the line on a windy day?
Bit cheeky of me to ask, but I thought you'd be a reliable source of info.
    Thanks very much. Valerie

    1. Hi Valerie! Thanks for commenting. I've loved the two Barbara Kingsolver books I've read so I shall look out for Demon Copperhead - I'm always in need of a book recommendation!
I'd hand wash the silk ties (I'm a fan of baby shampoo) and line dry them, I've not had a problem when I've done this. I expect that they've probably been stuffed in the back of a drawer for years and only a wash will shift the lingering odour. Good luck! xxx

Your spring capsule is really fabulous, love all the dresses (yes, all of them!), the cool waistcoats and those Lottas hanging from the door (such a brilliant tip).

    1. Hello, Terry! Lovely to hear from you and hope Springtime in South Carolina continues to be glorious. Several of our neighbours have neat and very conventional gardens, they think we're crazy hippies and are fascinated by us having a wildflower meadow instead of a front lawn and oddities like plant theatres (made from Victorian stepladders) and stumperies.
