Reader Requests - My Capsule Wardrobe and Long Hair Regime

Fifitr commented that she'd be interested in seeing the capsule wardrobe I'd created so, while Jon was out tinkering with engines on Tuesday afternoon, I commandeered a corner of our bedroom and took some photos. It was one of those days when the skies kept switching between gloriously sunny and ominously leaden, as you can see from how the colour of the wall, painted in Valspar's "Meet Me In Morocco", changed throughout. Our bedroom is quite dark so the colours of the garments - annoyingly - aren't true, especially the blue ones.

I'm not sure why I chose what I did, I love all of my clothes and wear them pretty much all year round. There's a few I don't wear as often as I should so I locked away a few old favourites to give the neglected ones a chance to shine.

It's interesting to see a pattern emerging as I took photos. If I wasn't already aware of my taste, creating these collages confirmed that the vast majority were made in South Asia (India, Pakistan & Afghanistan) and none were made in China. I rarely wear synthetics, prefer loosely fitting styles and I'm drawn to rich, earthy colours, Indian block print and hand-embroidery. Of the 66 garments I've selected, 15 were purchased new, all but one of which were bought from companies with transparent ethical policies. Forty-four of my choices are vintage (ie., at least 25 years old).

Much as I love wearing skirts, since we started our twice weekly swims almost a year ago, dresses are a lot easier to pull on and off so I've only chosen a handful. Up until a few years ago I only ever wore minis or maxis calling midi "midi-ocre", now half the dresses I've chosen are midi length.

All the dresses I've chosen work with polo neck jumpers worn underneath and can accommodate a waistcoat, coat or jacket over the top.

The boots I wear the most often, along with my only pair of shoes, are out on the rack. I've stashed a few pairs in the bottom of the wardrobe. I've not packed away any of my hats or my bags. The drawer in my dressing table holds my trousers (three pairs of jeans, denim dungarees and combats), skinny polo necks, two cardis, a jumper and a tank top.

Here's this week's choices....

Sunday (clearance charity shop and an afternoon of sewing): Vintage Phool Indian block printed midi with the only pair of shoes I own.

Monday (Tony's birthday outing to The Ashmolean, Oxford): Vintage Indian embroidered velvet maxi with a 1970s velvet jacket

Tuesday (Swimming, breakfast in Spoons and an afternoon of photography): Vintage Anokhi maxi skirt with a 1970s Ayesha Davar shirred cheesecloth blouse.

Wednesday (a morning of charity shopping and an afternoon of washing, mending and reading): Dilli Grey block printed cotton maxi dress.

Thursday (Swimming and breakfast in Spoons followed by an afternoon of crochet & cleaning): Vintage Pakistani block printed kaftan with a 1960s English-made fringed suede waistcoat.

And on the subject of reader requests, Kristin, a fellow long-haired lady, asked about my hair care regime back in January. (Sorry, I've not posted sooner!) As of today, my hair from root to tip measures 30" (76.2cm) and the last time I had a trim was 1st April, 2022.

I wash my hair once a week. For years I've used Lush's shampoo bars but recently spotted Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo Bar in Delicate Oat on offer so gave it a try. I'm really impressed, it smells lovely and my hair feels really soft. As we live in a hard water area some brands of shampoo bars leave a horrible sticky residue, Lush & the Ultimate Blends don't.

I've always used Lush's solid conditioner bars but for the last few weeks I've also been using this Daniel Galvin Jnr's Organic Head Argan Oil Detox Masque found in the clearance charity shop (B&M's organic coconut oil is a decent alternative). I apply it to dry hair, comb through, wrap my hair in a warm towel for 20 minutes then wash and condition as normal.

I never use a hairdryer. After I've washed my hair, I towel dry then French Braid it before I go to bed (brilliant tutorial HERE). I also do this most evenings (with dry hair) as I love the wavy effect and can't bear to go to bed with my hair down. The only styling products I use are The Hair Lab by Mark Hill serum and, on the rare occasion that I use my ceramic curling tongs, his heat protection spray.

If I ask him nicely, Lord Jon dyes my roots every five weeks. I'm currently using Castings Creme Gloss in Cool Chestnut (currently 2 for £12 in Superdrug). In between dye jobs I use L'Oreal Magic Root Re-Touch (often on offer in Lidl).

My hair has grown like mad in the last year. Don't quote me on this but I think it *could* have something to do with the high strength Ginkgo Biloba I take every morning (as recommended by Arthritis UK for my suspected Glaucoma). As it also boosts brain, mood and memory it doesn't hurt to try.

On the subject of hair, I've just treated myself to a new Speedo silicone cap especially for us long haired swimmers (I've chosen spearmint). £8.39 (free postage) on Ebay.

If there's anything else you want to ask me, please let me know in the comments.

See you soon!

  1. What a fabulous insight into your wardrobe. I've been really fed up with my wardrobe for a while. I can't decide if it's overwhelm, or the fact that a lot of black has crept in, so I might do a capsule cooperation to help me spot what I need to add/purge. Your hair is beautiful. Xx

    2. Hello Louise! Thanks you so much. Try and nip that black clothing habit in the bud - a few pieces are great for a bit of drama but too much is just depressing! Yes, have a go at making a capsule, pull out your favourite things and stash the rest away - don't part with anything until you're sure you won't need it, I've done just that when I've got overwhelmed in the past. xxx

  3. Wow! How flipping organised is your wardrobe? And how lovely. I noticed my favourite dress of yours; a deep blue with flowers on (?) was missing. Was it one of the ones you locked away, I wonder?

Your hair looks fabulous but I'm so glad I no longer worry about roots needing dyeing. I use the Garnier Solid Shampoo bars too; I found a couple at the food bank plus a conditioner bar but that's almost finished now.

I hope you'll post about the Ashmolean in Oxford; somewhere I've always wanted to visit and on the several occasions I've been to Oxford I've never managed to squeeze it in.

    1. Hi Vronni! It's a lot better now I've stashed half of it away! Your favourite blue dress (and her white twin) are awaiting Spring.
I don't mind the root touch-up as Jon does it for me. The Garnier shampoo bars are really good, I didn't think they'd be as good as the Lush ones but they're a great stop gap until I get over to their Birmingham shop.
You've missed a post, I wrote about Monday's Ashmolean trip earlier in the week, I've just commented on your blog and left you a link , you definitely need to go! xxx

  4. Ooh Vix - what a treat! I have a photo reference I keep on a private Pinterest board of my current wardrobe . It was hellish to do lol.
I have been filling a donation bag with jumpers and winter tops today, that I haven't worn this year. I"m determined to break the habit of going mad in the £1 charity clearance shop. I try to justify it by telling myself it is the last chance cafe for clothing before going to landfill.

Can I ask - have you ever been accused of cultural appropriation? I love textiles from many parts of the world and try very hard to be sensitive about wearing something that I appreciate for its beauty or the skill it took to produce it - whilst trying not to cause culturally offensive gaffes.

    1. I love the idea of photo referencing your wardrobe on Pinterest. I'm tempted to take better photos and follow suit. It would be a great way to plan holiday clothes without having to get everything out on the bed. I bet it took an absolute age to do, though.
Those clearance charity shops are fatal, its always the garments I get from there that end up being redonated a few weeks later.
I've never been accused for cultural appropriation and do hope I don't cause offence by wearing some of my massive tribal pieces of jewelry. When I'm out and about I'm often stopped and complimented on wearing "our fabric" by Asian and African ladies. One of our new chazzas is managed by a woman from Cameroon, I was buying a couple of West African waxed cotton garments and she told me that if it wasn't for white people buying it, the industry would have died out as Africans rarely wear it. xxx

    2. Like you, I have had nothing but delightful convos over 'our fabrics' - except for one person a while back who just wanted an arguement lol.

    3. What a vile person. Isn't it funny how you can have endless compliments but one single idiot's remarks stay with you for ever? xxx

  5. Thanks very much for that... most people's idea of a capsule wardrobe online seems to be very parsimonious, half a dozen grey items and one pair of shoes; it's lovely to see a more generous interpretation. You surely love a big sleeve, but then you're svelt enough to make it very noticeable in your silhouette - not that it's ever stopped me, mind you. Your wardrobe is such an inspiration. Since reading your blog I've noticed I've moved away from my very black and white wardrobe, apart from the really bold b&w prints, and bought some alarmingly bright knitwear as well as kingfisher cords, turquoise velvet flares and purple jeans... so something is working!

Having had waist-length hair for many years I'm convinced the secret is throwing out the hairdryer and the curling tongs. I find most bars leave a residue because of the hard water, although a vinegar rinse will solve it. However I'll give your recommendation a try in the hope of not going round smelling like a chip shop... I have ordered Spring Tide and have resorted to watching Babylon Berlin all the way through again. There's such a lot going on and so many characters it bears a repeat viewing - lush in every respect.

    1. Thanks for asking, Fiftr, it was an interesting exercise! Oh yeah, I've seen those "capsules" displayed on a 2" clothes rail in all their greige uniform-like glory. Reading about your alarmingly bright knitwear, velvet flares and purple jeans put a big smile on my face. I don't understand for the life of me why, when there's other colours available, anyone would choose black or grey as an option. I'm quite happy for some to say "you've got that amazing dress on again" rather than walk around anonymously in some beige bore.
You're right about the heated appliances. Whatever product you use it can't possibly protect your hair 100%, far better to avoid them completely.
I tried the vinegar rinse when I bought a fabulous smelling shampoo bar which left my hair looking like I'd swum through chip fat but it was easier to grate it up and use it for hand washing clothes in the end.
I still haven't watched Babylon Berlin, a couple of friends have told me that I'd love it. I'm always daunted when there's a lot of series to catch up on. xxx

  6. I love seeing your clothes as it reminds me of my 70s wardrobe and then I count the years! I've just taken a mental shopping trip through Biba, Petticoat Lane and then the delights of Oasis when I moved to Brum. Topics - I'd stray away from looks and I'd ask about how you've got on with your move to a smart 'phone and if you have found it easy to sort everything you want to do with it. I wonder if you've switched off all the things like location and mike to maintain privacy. I'm still resisting the change so am curious.

    1. Your 1970s wardrobe sounds fabulous, Ruth! I loved the old Oasis in Birmingham, Liz and I would hang about stalking Boy George.
I'm loving my Smart Phone so far. The camera especially, I can even crop photos instantly. I love being able to chat to friends & send photos on What's App and to quickly look up unfamiliar labels in charity shops. The maps were really useful when we were in Gran Canaria as was being able to translate items on the menu we weren't familiar with. I was also able to send a last minute festival application when I was away and digitally sign my annual accounts. It's lovely to be able to respond to comments when I'm killing time waiting for a train or in the optician's waiting room, too! Oh yes, many museums and art galleries have QR codes rather than labels these days so I can download those and get all the information on exhibits that I need. Podcasts are fabulous, I loved being able to listen to the Pre-Raphaelite Society broadcasts when I was on the plane.
The screen's a great size so I can see it without my specs - always a bonus.
I don't use my phone for writing blog posts, banking or my Ebay stuff, the PC's much better for that.
The apps won't work without the location being on and I can't make phone calls if the microphone isn't switched on. I can't say I'm unduly worried about privacy - I don't check into Facebook with my whereabouts or anything attention-seeking like that.
Hope this answers your question. I'm so pleased I've finally joined the 21st Century! xxx

    2. You've done a great job selling a smart 'phone. I just feel we're being forced to use them and then there's what happens when there's a tech problem.
Now to the trip down memory lane that you triggered and I've been thinking of concerts (especially Birmingham Town Hall and the Odeon) and clubs and all night cafes and the Danish Centre and King Kong and strikes and bombs and a long hot summer and queues and snow. Vix, I'm having a great time!

    3. I know what you mean, Ruth! I'm obsessive about backing up and keeping things written down in a notebook just to be on the safe side.
My first gig was at the Birmingham Odeon - The Stray Cats in 1981! Birmingham Town Hall was a brilliant venue as long as you weren't stuck behind a pillar. I vividly remember walking past The Tavern in the Town a few days after the bombing with my Mum. King Kong came back to Birmingham for The Commonwealth Games but I never got to see him. xxx

  10. What a cool wardrobe mine is full of jeans, anime t shirts, shirt dresses, t shirt dresses and leggings my mainstay. I have 3 wardrobes full. Eek . But it’s funny I know what I own!!
I make smoosh for my blue hair, it’s conditioner , whatever hair oil is to hand and some blue dye. It’s been blue for nearly 5 years and all my customers know me as bluey .
Don’t ask. Don’t ask me about trainers and boot. I have lost count lol.
I sadly dont have a capsule wardrobe. I love to differentiate my wardrobe, too suit my mood that day. Love and hugs Allie jane

Your "smoosh" sounds interesting! I'm going to have a bash at making my own skin oil as the one I've been using for the last couple of years has stopped making it, that'll be interesting. xxx

I can second effectiveness of the Mark Hill hair serum. It's the best I've ever used.
I also used to use Casting Creme Gloss (one of the blonde shades) and whilst I loved the condition and colours, they didn't really cover my greys and I had to resort to permanents. "Lord Jon dyes my roots every five weeks" is not a sentence one reads every day! :-D xxx

  18. That's a lovely, colourful wardrobe.= i googled what size a capsule wardrobe should be and found the answer is 30-50 garments - that seems a lot, I don't think I have that many circulating in one month or season even ! might have to do some shopping - my capsule needs to expand :) mine's very sensible - there's a lot of navy and white and even one beige item! but then there's colour too I like to organise mine in colour blocks :) I don't wear makeup apart from lip liner and eyebrow pencil and a touch of blusher on special occasions, can't stand the feel of foundations and concealers or mascara even - too much faddle but interested to see what you do :) might get myself a makeover one of these days as some shops still offer them when they're bored :)

  20. Glancing back at your wardrobe "capsules" over the past 10+ years and reflecting on how my mum was right about investing in good leather bags. Working wardrobes evolve with our careers and changing fashions -- but a good leather bag stays the course. (Her 1940s red leather train case is still in use, 80 years on.) Isn't at least one of your bags an heirloom?
