Hello! I'm back with replies to a couple more of your questions.
Ratnamurti asked about my fitness regime. After a long hiatus, I got back into my swimming last year, unleashed my inner mermaid and now swim 1.10miles a week (and a lot more if I'm on a beach holiday!) I go to the local baths twice a week and swim forty lengths breast stroke on each visit, which I break up into four sets of ten with 10 x poolside pull-ups between each set. It takes me under 40 seconds to swim a length and my feet don't touch the floor the entire time I'm in the pool.
I wear proper swimsuits rather than fashion ones - this one by Arena came from M&M Direct (on clearance for £15) and I bought another Arena model from a charity shop for 50p. The Speedo silicone long hair cap was from a swimwear specialist on Ebay (HERE) and I'm happy to report it kept my hair dry on Tuesday morning's swim.

On the days when I'm not swimming, I do a half-hour Wii Fit workout at 7am every morning and yesterday I celebrated my 4822nd anniversary! I warm up with ten minutes of step aerobics, using hand weights to tone my arms. The remaining twenty minutes is spent on muscle building exercises, varying the routine each time: jack-knives, lunges, press-ups and side stands, balance bridges, planks, waist twists, rowing squats and bicep curls.
After my left hip replacement in 2006, I was told that my right side would need replacing within five years - it's now been 17! My orthopaedic consultant puts my successful dodging of his knife down to regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight ....and I don't need to tell you about the benefits of regular exercise on mental health, do I?
My workout gear (mostly Nike, Puma and Beyonce's Ivy Park label) all came from charity shops, several with the store labels still attached. I can understand why you see so many women out and about in their gym gear, the decent quality stuff is so comfortable. I often keep mine on under my clothing.
I can honestly say that at 56 I feel fitter, stronger & more confident in my skin than I've ever felt. When I signed up for the NHS's Our Future Health programme I was told that I had the BMI and blood pressure of an elite athlete. If you're not already, get active, girls!

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm sick of seeing beauty & skincare products targeted at us pre, peri and post menopausal women, it seems like a cynical attempt to play on our insecurities and cash in. Any company contacting me and asking that I peddle their anti-ageing shite gets told in no uncertain terms where they can get off.

I was asked about my skincare and make-up routine by a reader who sadly didn't leave a name. There's nothing fancy or age specific to my skincare routine, I'm a plain old soap and water girl, the soap is usually brought back from our travels. I'm hoping the donkey milk soap turns me into Cleopatra (just not on her death bed!)

As usual, I'm linking to things I use and like, not because I'm getting anything back from the retailers.
I make my own facial oil using fractionated organic coconut oil as a carrier blended with rose and geranium essential oil using a 1% dilution (or 1oz of the carrier oil to 6 drops of the essential oil). I apply a couple of drops and massage into my face after washing. Amphora Aromatics are a fabulous Bristol-based company, you can buy direct from their website or via Superdrug Marketplace.
At night, I take my eye make-up and lipstick off with Nivea's Double Effect Waterproof eye make-up remover, wash with soap and water and apply a smear of Vaseline under my eyes.
Make-up wise it's similarly cheap and cheerful. I've been using Barry M since I was a schoolgirl and see no reason not to carry on doing so. I apply Barry M Bold black eyeliner beneath my lower lashes which I smudge with a eyeliner brush, follow that by Barry M or Revolution eyeshadow in whatever colour I feel like wearing, then some eyeliner dotted above my upper lashes (also smudged with the brush) followed by a couple of coats of Barry M's Feature Length Mascara. I use Maybelline's Brow Xtensions on my pathetically sparse eyebrows (hereditary rather than over-plucked). I love a creme blush - this one by Revolution is fab.
Nothing comes to close to Maybelline's Superstay Matt Lip Ink, it lasts for hours and hours. I buy mine (new!) from eBay at a fraction of the retail price. I like Romantic (hot pink), Heroine (bright orange), Ruler (plum) and Pioneer (a cool-toned red). A few people find them drying, I think it depends on the colour - the red more so than the others.
Annie asked about foundation which I've only only ever worn when someone's done my make-up for me (and hated the feel of it on my skin) but as my skin's not as evenly toned as it used to be I apply a light dusting of Revolution's Banana Powder with a brush across the bridge of my nose, centre of my forehead and chin (these brushes are good), which brightens up my face and evens out the colour without it looking cakey and unnatural.

Oh poor Jane Morris, she really does look like she watched one too many of the adverts telling us to use specific products for our hair, face and skin or we will fall apart. If only that timer was a large glass of red wine, she would feel so much better. At least men are now getting Viagra adverts aimed at them ...
ReplyDeleteYour fitness and beauty regime put me to shame, you look amazing and it's really been worth all the hard work that you have put in ... as you know.
Haha! That's the best pro-aging advice out there, drop the self pity, pour yourself a large glass of wine and get on with it!
DeleteI'd rather get up at the crack of dawn and exercise for the rest of my life than have to undergo another major operation! xxx
You wear far more makeup than I do but our skin regimes are remarkably similar :-) Coconut oil wins everytime for me, like you I use it extensively. Also a fan of old-fashioned soap and water.
ReplyDeleteRecently found a new-to-me British company who have been making soap in an old fashioned way since 1893. No affilliation (bla bla) but their "Glycerose Rose-Scented" soap is divine, and the Mandarin Shampoo Bar for hair is the best I have used. Leaves my hair incredibly soft and feels really gentle. https://droyt.com/ (PS: their customer service is wonderful too).
Like you, I keep very physically active and apparently have the resting heart-rate of an athlete 😱
There's nothing better than a friend's recommendation for a product, I shall be making a purchase from Droyt after I've opened my next bar of soap - being down to two bars is the magic number for restocking! The shampoo bar sounds great, I wonder if it'll be as good with our notoriously hard water down here.
DeleteBeing compared to an athlete is such an empowering compliment, it made me feel ever more determined to stay fit! xxx
I always love reading about women's skin care routines. I've always been fascinated with lotions and potions and so I'll also be making sure I read all of the comments too!
ReplyDeleteI used to make my own facial oil, but these days tend to use whatever I have to hand. Bio-Oil is quite good, but I've also used coconut oil and even good old fashioned olive oil. Marilyn Monroe used to use Vaseline on her face. I've never tried it under the eyes though. More recently, I've relied more on serums, which seem to add just the right amount of moisture without leaving my skin feeling greasy and layered my products.
We were having a conversation the other day about lipsticks. The perfect lippy evades me. I need something colour rich, creamy and moisturising - with staying power. I have yet to find it and hate it when my lips feel dry as a result of lipstick, so, more often than not, I just apply a little lip balm.
Great post! You're making me feel very sluggish! xxx
Like you, I love reading about other women's beauty routines especially those of real people who've got nothing to gain by recommending a product unlike a beauty editor or influencer.
DeleteAfter my op I used Bio-oil on the scar but switched to a cheaper alternative from Poundland. It definitely helped with reducing the appearance of the scarring, I'd never thought of using it on my face!
I noticed that Barry M sell a serum mist. I've not used one before.
I'll be interesting to see if anyone has any tips for lipstick, I love the Maybelline ones - I find that if I completely remove mine and reapply it rather than just touching it up, stops that annoying drying effect. xxx
Well done, Vix, on your physical fitness. May it stand you in good stead for whatever old age has in store for you. No one knows what it has in store for them other than generalisations and a lot is down to one's attitude to it and to keeping active. I know women younger than me who find daily living activities a struggle and they don't even have any medical conditions to blame. Like you I'm fitter and more active now than since I was a young woman!
ReplyDeleteI would love to use soap and water but find it just too drying on my skin. I have always cleansed and moisturised my skin since I was 15 and hope that helps.
I've been trying to get hold of a cheaper version of the 'Ruler' Maybelline Stay Matte lippie - must try eBay!
Hope you week is going well...
xxx
Thanks, Vronni! You'requite right, none of us know what's around the corner so it's best to face whatever it is being as fit and healthy as we can be.
DeleteI do get exasperated by anyone who won't make an effort to get active and makes every excuse in the book about not exercising. There's a lady who comes to the baths on a walking frame, she has to be helped into the water and I often have to help her shower and get dressed afterwards but she's determined to keep going and says that she feels so much better both mentally and physically afterwards.
My friend Nikki recommends Friendly Soap's "Shea Butter Fragrance Free" for skin prone to dryness, they sell it on the "&keep" website where I buy my cellulose sponges, coconut scrubbers and plastic-free floor cleaner
I've just had a look for Ruler on eBay and found it for £5.49 with free postage. xxx
I’m with you on keeping things simple on the beauty front Vix. I have used the same products for years and only ever use bars of soap for showering. Pilates is my go to exercise which I practice everyday. Unfortunately scoliosis and osteoporosis have crept up on my mobility but I see it as a challenge and won’t give in to it. A curious mind and desire to learn something new everyday is my thing xxx
ReplyDeleteOops that anonymous was me xx
DeleteYou've got fabulous skin, Lynn, testament to keeping skin care simple and not faffing around and wasting money chopping and changing.
DeleteGood on you for persevering with the Pilates, I loved the classes I went to when the council offered them for free in an attempt to rid Walsall of it's fattest town in the UK status.
I completely agree about the curious mind and the desire to learn something new , didn't Iris Apfel say something similar in her book? xxx
Love this post, Vix!! And all the paintings! Reading your posts is a highlight of my week, always so interesting and inspirational! At 60 I finally feel comfortable in my own skin, what took me so long!! Absolutely agree that maintaining a healthy weight and daily exercise are crucial! I would also add loads of social connections, alcohol in moderation, and never losing a sense of wonder and curiosity (and humour) which I think you'd also agree with!! You look fabulous!! Sending you lots of Love from Barcelona!! xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Diana! You're right about moderate alcohol, social connections and having a sense of wonder and curiosity, too - far better for our looks than overpriced lotions and potions! xxx
DeleteI'm in awe of your fitness regime, which makes me feel more than just a tad sluggish. If only I didn't loathe exercise so much ... perhaps because I'm still traumatized about my school days. I might take up swimming and cycling again when I'm retired - there's just no time right now - but that's about it for me. In my defence, I do quite a lot of walking.
ReplyDeleteLike you I'm strictly a soap and water girl! I do indeed find Maybelline's Superstay Matt Lip Ink a bit drying, and although I'm still using it on and off, I've switched to their 24 H lip colour, which has a conditioning top coat/balm.
Love the Pre-Raphaelite images accompanying your post! xxx
We had a horror of a swimming teacher who'd rap on the head with a plastic pipe if we didn't swim fast enough. I dreaded swimming lessons at school, too!
DeleteI think not having to reapply my lipstick all day has spoilt me for wearing anything else but I shall have look at those 24 hour colour lipsticks on ebay and give one a try. xxx
I wish I had your dedication! I have yet to return to swimming post-COVID. I can't believe how expensive skin care products are. I buy mine at the dollar store. The ads use 25 year old girls. As if a 50 could get skin like that....
ReplyDeleteI remember that you always used to swim back in the days BC, Alex! It always pays to shop around for make-up, eBay is brilliant. You have to laugh at these child models advertising anti- aging skincare, like they need it! xxx
Deletehi Vix another great post! Thank you for all thaty information but more especially thanks for reinforcing the, "over 50 woman as vibrant and relevant" vibe. Your workout routine is impressive, to say the least and your beauty regime is very interesting in it's diversity of products. My niece is the President of Revolution Beauty USA so i'm thrilled you like the products and will tell her a very famous blogger is a fan! ONce again thanks for the time you spend giving us a glimpse of your great life.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind comment! Fancy your niece being the President of Revolution Beauty USA, that's incredible. I've tried expensive eyeshadows (like Mac) in the past but Revolution wins every time. xxx
Deletei don't know why i'm listed as anonymous! I'm Shelagh, i have tried to comment lots of times but the comments have never been published. I'm surprised this comment has HaHa the wonders of technology. I continued to try posting and it has paid off, at last. Shelagh xx
DeleteHello Shelagh! I'm sorry that Blogger has been losing your comments, thats happened to me with a few blogs I follow. I ended up emailing the blogger concerned just in case they thought I'd fallen out with them! Thank you for persevering, it's lovely to hear from you. xxx
DeleteRose oil is great - I used to buy a small bottle for about £30 but now use a big pot of aquaeous cream and sunblock on my face shortly - Occasionally I'll use a geǹtle melting facial exfoliator - How wonderful that The NHS said you had the body of an elite gymnast Vix:- Your continual workouts clearly pay off - So you needn't feel guilty when you have a few treats now and then x
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of rose oil, Flis, it's an instant mood booster. Aqueous cream is brilliant value, I've used the Superdrug one in the past and been really impressed with it. I like the sound of the melting facial exfoliator, it sounds like it would be kind on the skin.
DeleteOur Wetherspoon's breakfast is a real treat after our swim, when I get to my 30th length I can start tasting it! xxx
Another Droyt soap fan here - couldn't do without during epic COVID handwashing!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the banana powder link - I disappeared down the Revolution cosmetic rabbit hole for ages lol
I like a mineral powder foundation - just the lightest dusting and I can recommend Lily Lolo - you can get refills and sample pots too - excellent product that doesn't turn orange on my scarey ghostly- white complection. Mind you, I am a make-up witch with skin and hair that makes things oxidise and take on a ginger hue lol.
Menopause is the new black it seems - eye-rolling has reached epic proportions here. I don't like the medicalisation/marketing feckwittage at all. I don't need a pot of special over 60s gunk thanks.
I'm as active as I can be which is a tiny fraction of how active you are!
If you go on the National Portrait Gallery website and search for Jane Morris there are some beautiful images - including her with gorgeous white hair (and no distracting symbolism lol).
I definitely need to invest in some Droyt soap, how on earth have I not heard of it before? Jayne tells me that Drew visited the workshop on Salvage Hunters, I missed that as well.
DeleteI'm with you on the Lily Lolo - it's ace - I ordered a couple of testers ages ago and managed to find a sealed pot on Ebay in my perfect shade, Cookie (a medium, neutral) and it's been a skincare fixture for ages. I bought the Banana powder when I spotted it in Superdrug as a stop gap before I bought a refill. That's funny about you being a make-up witch as well as a watch one!
Gah! If I see another menopausal targeted product I swear I'll kick the display over and, as Alex commented, it's usually advertised by a 25 year old.
I'm off to search the National Portrait Gallery website. Loving Stunner: The Fall and Rise of Fanny Cornforth - ta very much for the recommendation! xxx
Fanny is SO my girl-crush lol An excellent woman and all-round disrupter. Here's a lovely talk by Kirsty Stonell Walker to watch on your new phone https://youtu.be/_JfYlLur5CI
DeleteYou are a superstar, thank you! xxx
DeleteQuite the busy lady.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
I'm a born fidget, I find it impossible to sit still - I drive everyone I know daft! xxx
DeleteSo interesting, Vix. I can't stand all of the age shaming and age conning that goes on. You have truly proved that age is irrelevant. And that consistency and values are what matter. So inspiring. Do you make any "age" concessions with your diet?
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I hate this cashing in on the menopause by major companies, it's been ignored for years and now we're having these miracle products rammed down our throats.
DeleteI don't think I've made any age concessions to my diet. My metabolism has definitely speeded up since I ramped up the exercise so I've started buying full fat Greek yogurt as opposed to the reduced version to keep me fuller for longer. xxx
I was really interested to read this. I do have a question- do you use these facial products morning and evening, e.g. if you have a shower, will you use the soap on your face then?
ReplyDeleteI also use soap on my face- I actually have some cleansers I really need to use up but I just tend to use my soap! Mum gave me a lovely natural facial soap for Christmas but I haven't got around tp using it.
Intrigued by the Vaseline!
Nowadays, I have been seeking out products I can refill or those in glass- I use Lilac and Thyme face creams- they are a Northumbria company- their Carrot and Avocado night cream is very pleasant- plus I save my jars a d return them to the maker!
Kxx
Hello Kezzie! Yes, I wash my face in the shower in the evening and at the bathroom sink in the morning. I moisturise after washing my face but only put Vaseline around my eyes at night.
DeleteCleansers seem like such a faff, don't they? Soap and water every time for me.
Thanks for the recommendation for Lilac and Thyme, the website looks lovely. xxx
Thank you for the insights Vix. You look absolutely amazing, and at 41 I wish I was nearly as toned and slim as you. I need to take some inspiration and get off my backside and do some exercise. I've recently started using Maybelline tattoo brow. I've always had full eyebrows, but they are getting a little patchy and I have to say, I really like the product. You only need to do it once every 3 days and it stays on. I'm also going to check out those Lip Inks you mention. I love a bold lip, but I'm getting a bit tired of it rubbing off so quickly. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Louise! I did see that Maybelline Tattoo product in Superdrug but wondered if it would work with my pathetically sparse brows, I love the idea of it lasting for three days. I shall keep my eyes peeled to see if it pops up on ebay then it won't be too much of a wrench if it does suit me. xxx
DeleteWow! Your fitness regime is amazing! You look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could swim well, I can't swim very well and can't get over the fear of being out of my depth in water. I have tried but just can't cope in deep water. Sounds very feeble I know.
It's not feeble at all, Carole. I used to be scared of swimming out of my depth but something clicked one day and I seemed to lose the fear. xxx
DeleteA really interesting post Vix, thank you. I use Amphora Aromatics’ Frankincense and Rose skin cream which at around £7/60ml is a steal compared to Neal’s Yard. When I lived near Guildford I bought my moisturiser from the NY shop as I could recycle my blue glass there which was then turned into kitchen worktops. I think it was a local guy picking up the glass and the resulting worktops were a work of art. Nowadays Manuka Wholefoods in Chichester is my place for shampoo bars, soap for face and body and Amphora Aromatics in brown glass. I use AA’s Frankincense and Rose Whipped Shea Butter on hands and feet followed by socks and white cotton gloves (ignoring the snooker comments obvly!) when I need some intensive moisturising on these hardworking parts. I started using a shampoo bar to wash my hair when farmers markets started about 20 years ago and am so happy that my hair has been plastic-bottle free for all that time. I have never used hair conditioner (nor fabric conditioner - both products dreamt up by the marketing men, a bit like the slogan to wash hair twice which doubled their profits overnight) and don’t own a hairdryer. I wear SPF 50 every day now after a couple of recent brushes with basal skin cell carcinomas on my face. I spent my childhood to mid-thirties constantly on or in the water sailing, windsurfing (used to go to Fuerteventura every winter and Vassiliki every summer for windsurfing, rowing, training for and competing in triathlons and still love the feel and look of the sun on my face. Currently I am using the Aussie brand Ultra Violette which is hydrating, pink-tinted and smells neutral. To even out my skin tone I use Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturiser SPF 30, then a dab of Stila’s cream blush in Peony high on my cheekbones and I love a bit of lipstick or tinted lip balm. I have a few on the go including a Kevin Aucoin rosy pink (lasts for ever applied with a brush), By Terry rose balm in glass pot and Ultra Violette’s lip balm in Rose with SPF 50. I never wear eye make up. I have dark green hazel eyes, dark eyelashes and unplucked natural eyebrows. I was always too busy playing sport as a teenager to pluck my eyebrows, at age 18/19 I was working on a kibbutz and travelling around Greece and by the time I was at university in 1980 eyebrows were back. My BMI was calculated last week. My husband had an appointment with the Parkinson’s nurse at the hospital and I accompanied him into the weighing and measuring room and while nurse was working out his BMI at 19.5 - he is ultra skinny now - I sat on the weighing chair and stood under the measure and came in at 9st 13lb and 171cm and my BMI is 20.5. When I rowed my weight had to be under 58kg/9st 2lb so 30 years later and carrying a bit of winter blubber I am happy with that. I measured my waist yesterday for the fit of a waistband on a pair of trousers I am making and it was 28 inches. Waist measurement is a really good indicator of health and anything over 31 inches for a woman should be ringing alarm bells. I must get back to weekly swimming. I have swam all my life with very few breaks but stopped last November after having surgery to my face. We should re-start as swimming is good exercise for my 70 yo husband who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease last year. He still works full time for our publishing business and does everything he used to do except more slowly and he gets extremely tired occasionally. I am 62 but in my head I feel anything from 16 to 28 years depending on how much gardening I’ve been doing! Keep doing what you’re doing Vix, what a wonderful inspiration you are to us all and you really do look fabulous. Sarah in Sussex x
ReplyDeleteHello Sarah! What a fantastic and informative comment.
DeleteI'm really impressed with Amphora Aromatics, the prices, the glass packaging and how quickly my order was dispatched, I even got a couple of freebies which will go straight into my travel bag. It's great to read your recommendations, too - there's so much choice on their website I didn't know where to start.
I don't think I could ever go back to the gloopy consistency of liquid shampoo after using bars for years. I'd never considered hair conditioner being unnecessary, I'd be worried trying to get the comb through my hair after washing it. Like you I absolutely despise fabric conditioner, the greasy feel makes me feel queasy, fabric needs to be crisp not slimy!
I shall add Ultra Violette products to my list. I always use Boots Soltan Once a Day Factor 30 in the Summer but I'm not keen on the smell. Back in my corporate days my assistant's wife worked in House of Fraser's beauty department and keep me supplied with freebies for years including lots of Stila and Calvin Klein - probably the only thing I miss about my old career!
My Mum was so disappointed when I was born with masses of fine white blonde hair and blue eyes, she'd hoped I'd inherit my Dad's black hair and hazel eyes. Whilst rarely needing to shave my legs is great, I think I'd have traded that in for having beautiful eyebrows like yours instead of the feeble sparse things I've been lumbered with! Even if I'm bare faced I have to fill in my brows or I look like an alien!
I bet not being able to swim has been really frustrating, it is such a brilliant exercise for both mind and body. There are several regular swimmers with Parkinson's Disease in our pool and by being active they seem to be managing the condition well. That NHS programme Jon and I are on told us about the importance waist measurements, we both got the thumbs up for ours, too.
I wished you wrote a blog, sarah, you're such an interesting and positive person. Mind you, reading about everything you do I don't think you'd find the time! xxx
Well this is really enlightening! I got out of the habit of wearing make up in the past few years, and haven't bought any new make up for ages, so this is really helpful Vix. Plus I've just treated myself to a Fitbit and I am determined to increase my step count this year. I dropped 1 1/2 stones last year, and intend to lose the rest of the extra pounds this year!!!
ReplyDeleteWell done on the weight loss, Jayne, I have no doubt you can build up those steps, you're a determined lady! I'm glad you enjoyed the make-up/ skincare post, I'm fascinated by what other women use so loved the comments on this post. xxx
DeleteI love Barry M products to - cruelty free which is BRILLIANT! <3
ReplyDeleteThey're fantastic, I've loved them for years! xxx
DeleteThank you so much, Vix, for all these details about your routines and regimes! Speaking of which, while you're in the sharing mode, I would love to know more about your vegetarian diet regime; your clothing care tips and techniques which make your clothes last so long; and your planning advice as to how you squeeze so much into each day including housework and admin work. I am amazed at your productivity while still having time for reading, watching shows, and having fun. What is your secret? Low sleep needs? Enquiring minds...
ReplyDeleteHello Tess, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. What interesting questions- bear with me, I'll have a think and get a post up in the next couple of weeks! xxx
DeleteThanks, Vix. I appreciate it! Your readers might like to know about the wonderful EWG's Skin Deep database compiled and maintained by the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit here in the US. I research all my skin care and makeup products using that resource before buying. Hugs from across the Atlantic!
DeleteHello, Tess. EWG's Skin Deep sounds fascinating, thank you so much. I'm off to investigate further. Have a lovely weekend. xxx

Oh Vix, the thought of being hit on the head with a rubber pipe for not swimming fast enough!! I bet that wouldn't happen now! I can remember our school making us do 'cross country' running round the backstreets of our town. We'd stop off for ice pops at a corner shop and always come last. And swimming in the communal old Victorian swimming baths and seeing cock roaches in the water!! It's scarred me for life. I'm in my 50's and vegetarian like you but unlike you have thin hair so will definitely try the ginko bilabo. I did want to ask (as you look so amazing) would you mind doing something on your diet? You are inspirational and I've got a reduced veg box to eat!! :) Hope that's not too nosey! Louise (Midlands) X
ReplyDeleteHello lovely fellow Midlander, Louise! I do roll my eyes when people wax lyrical about the good old days, being a schoolgirl in the 1970s and 1980s was anything but! We never did cross country, they probably knew us girls would probably run off and hang around the arbo (our park) chatting up boys rather than do any exercise.
DeleteCockroaches in the water?! I shudder just thinking about it.
That Gingko is definitely worth a try, if only to boost the memory and help our creaky old joints (being the poor old 50 somethings that we are!)
I'm envious of your veg box - there weren't any when we popped in - I blame the school holidays. Your question isn't nosey at all, I'll start being annoying and photographing our food for the next week or so and I promise to write a diet post in the next fortnight! xxx
Thank for a wonderful post. My beef with all the beauty stuff is the claims about being "anti-aging" I am proudly proaging and flatly refuse to use anything that uses that term. I wish we had the Lidl box here, sadly our veggies are very expensive but amazing quality usually. Grow lots of our own stuff, however trouble is we have to fight the brush tail possums and their ring tail cousins to get our fair share. I really look forward to you posts as many others have said they are inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lynette, what a kind comment! Gah, pro-aging, it grates on me even more than anti-aging, a load of ageist nonsense the lot of it! We're so lucky with those veg boxes. Unlike yours, our supermarket offerings can be quite hit and miss, under-ripe, tasteless and prone to go off really quickly - the Lidl contents seem to be a lot tastier despite being so close to their best before date.xx
DeleteYour fitness routine is admirable, Vix! And so good to hear that you're in elite shape! I have fallen off my fitness in recent years, but I am proud that I've been doing a series of exercises daily for the past year and it's been miraculous how much better I feel. It's all core, upper body, pelvic floor and butt - my cardio is fine with the brisk walking and stairs that I do at work, as well as my longer shopping or transportation walks.
ReplyDeleteI also love hearing what other women do for their skin and make-up! I have worn Oil of Olay with SPF 15 since I was 17 years old, when I observed two white-haired ladies on the bus who had the most beautiful pillowy skin in their old age - not a lick of sun damage. I have not deliberately sun-bathed in 38 years, and I slather up every time I go outside. It's been the best thing I ever did for my skin. I still put on my OoO every morning!
My morning routine: shower, Cerave face wash (I will buy whatever plain face cleanser I can find on sale at the drugstore), followed by OoO and MAC eye-makeup fixative. I have super-oily skin so my make-up all tends to slide off over the day. I use MAC cover-up under my eyes, around my nose and on my scars (upper lip, lower side lip), and anywhere I might have a blemish. I blend with my fingers, then dust MAC Studio Fix powder over my whole face - it's very sheer, but evens things out. I use a MAC blush (a plummy colour), then 3 MAC eyeshadows, usually matching my outfit. I do black eyeliner (Rimmel), blurred with a brush and mascara (Rimmel). I spent a lot on my brushes (by MAC, had a gift card) and I wash them regularly with soap and water. I also draw on my eyebrows with Rimmel's eyebrow pencil (it has a wee brush on the end to give my brows shape). I have mostly white eyebrows but the hairs are all there, lol.
I love MAC because a) they are a Canadian company b) you can return all of your empties for free eyeshadows and lipsticks/gloss. I love their lipstick, by the way - they last really well and don't bleed. I don't find them drying at all.
I remove my make up with Neutrogena face wash (it was on sale), then I usually don't touch my skin after that - the natural oils moisturize it. Every so often I give it a slather of some "night cream" that I pick up on sale. I also like masks and light peels once in a while - it's fun to try some of this stuff out if it's cheap enough.
Wow! What a fantastic comment, Sheila! There's something fascinating about other women's routines so that was a cracking read. Thanks so much for sharing!
DeleteWell done on the daily exercise regime and for sticking at it for a whole year. Once you get into a routine it becomes as normal as brushing your teeth or applying lipstick, it's just the getting started that's the problem, isn't it?
The lack of sunbathing is admirable. We Brits are terrible as a rule, it's not uncommon for us to leave off the sun cream on the last day of a foreign beach holiday and burn to a crisp so we look extra tanned when we get home (I've never done that, but loads of people I've holidayed with have!) I do wear sunscreen but think nothing of lying in it all day. I'll be the wizened up lizard on the bus!
Jon swears by Cerave hand cream, I didn't know they made a face wash, he'd love that. I remember you mentioning that MAC was made in Canada and about their admirable recycle policy. Claire's been after the perfect lipstick, so MAC could be the answer, I'll check she's read your comment.
I love that you use Rimmel products, a great value brand. It's interesting that you don't bother with a moisturiser, I don't bother when I go away and then always feel like I've been really naughty!
Masks are a real treat, not something I'd ever actively buy but I love it when I get them as gifts. xxx
Hi Vix, sorry to have missed so many of your posts but I do have a good excuse ( I was diagnosed with bowel cancer followed by surgery). Fortunately I was fit and healthy so am recovering well. I always admire your energy levels now I know why . It is so important to find exercise that you enjoy (no swimming for me) . I enjoyed a peek at your skincare and makeup routine . Totally agree about the annoying menopause commercial nonsense just do what works for you . xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Jill, I'm so sorry to read about your bowel cancer diagnosis and am very relieved to hear that you're recovering from the surgery. I think that's why it's so important to be as fit and healthy as we can, who knows what may be lurking around the corner waiting to knock us for six.
DeleteI've checked on your blog a few times when you didn't update it and thought you might be on your travels. Much love to you. xxx
your fitness routine looks fun and your home made face oil must smell wonderful. I have used Bodyshop CBD oil for about a year and now can't get it so will try something new on my holidays. You forgot to mention your fabulous nails and extensive BarryM nail colours! they always look immaculate in your photos. Betty
ReplyDeleteThanks, Betty! I know you love your swimming and workouts, too.
DeleteWhat a nuisance about the Body Shop discontinuing that CBD oil, I hate it when that happens. I was spoilt for choice with all those essential oils but thought rose and geranium would remind me of Greece!
I shall have to take a photo of my Barry M nail collection - it's growing at an alarming rate! xxx
You're incredibly disciplined in your beauty and health routines and with immaculate results. Way back when, it was the fashion to wear Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish foundation (graduating from Max Factor Pan Stick), think orange tile grout! I can still remember the smell of it which I loved! Thanks for the tip about the banana powder. I shall seek some out! Great post as ever.xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I've got the attention span of a gnat so really have to force myself to be disciplined. I remember that Max Factor pan Stick, the smell always reminded me of my Grandma, happy memories! Hope you get on with the Banana Powder, Revolution do a smaller travel sized one as well, perfect to test out before you commit to the full sized one! xxx
DeleteJust saw on FB that Lou Lou's Vintage Fair is on in Birmingham tomorrow (Saturday) at The Custard Factory? Won't be cheap but worth a visit if you're out and about and it's not too far from you.Have a good weekend.xxx
DeleteThanks, Annie! That just popped up on my Facebook feed. I've done that fair before and would much rather go as a punter than a seller, it would be nice to catch up with my old trader mates. xxx
DeleteThanks for the beauty tips Vix. Love the pre-raphaelite ladies. Oh I do miss swimming. Our public pool closed & the hotel ones are small and expensive. I should just toughen up & jump in the sea! Stay active & fab xXx
ReplyDeleteSea swimming is hardcore, Lulu! I'm not sure I could do it in the UK! xx
