Hola, chicas, we're home! We actually got back on Friday afternoon but it's taken me all weekend to sift through the thousands of photos we took. Apologies in advance for the image heavy post, I was spoilt for choice!
Our Spanish trip was somewhat impromptu. Idly browsing the Ryanair website a fortnight ago I noticed that flights from Birmingham to Málaga were £24.99 and clicked "book now" without a moment's hesitation. On Monday 5th December, after a leisurely breakfast, we walked into town, caught the train to Birmingham International and, with only a small cabin bag each, breezed through departures and enjoyed a pint of San Miguel in 'Spoons before boarding the plane, arriving in Andalucia two and a half hours later. After a short bus ride to Málaga we called Mariola, the owner of the accommodation we'd rented via Booking.com, who sent her teenage son, Mario, to escort us through the labyrinthine alleyways of the historic old town and hand over the keys to our apartment.
Located on the third floor of a 19th century building, our apartment was the only rental amid those permanently resided in by Spanish families (the photo above is the view from one of our two balconies). After unpacking our bags we followed young Mario's advice and walked around the corner to Calle Marqués de Larios where Málaga's festive Sound & Light show was set to start at 7pm.
Now, anyone who knows me will be aware that I'm not in the slightest bit interested in Xmas and, in all truth, the mere mention of it bores me to tears but the experience was utterly magical. Young and old, families, courting couples, gangs of teenagers, grandparents, dog walkers, tourists and locals crammed into the square whilst the residents of the apartments above the shops hung over their balconies and for 15 minutes we all sang and danced, united in joy.
The Costa Del Sol hasn't had a drop of rain since March but someone must have heard that I was on the way and it absolutely pissed it down!
Stopping to gawping in wonder at the majestic Catedral de Málaga, constructed between 1530 and the start of the 17th Century,
Before moving on to admire the marvelously Baroque, rose pink Palacio Episcopal (Episcopal Palace), built in 1762.
We had dinner in El Vegetariano De La Alcazabilla, Málaga's oldest vegetarian/vegan restaurant, run by a lovely couple and their cat.
The menu was exceptional, tasty, home-cooked and utterly delicious. I was delighted to discover that I share my name with the local beer.
Tuesday was my birthday and - for the first time in four years - I awoke to a day without rain!
If, like us, you're culture junkies, Málaga is a dream, boasting thirty-two museums, galleries and historical monuments however, after we'd booked our flights, we discovered that our trip was bisected by two national holidays - luckily none of the places we'd chosen to visit on my birthday were affected by bank holiday opening hours.
Located within the imposing one-hundred year old Fábrica de Tabacos, a former tobacco factory, our first destination was Museo Automovilistico & de la Moda (the automobile and fashion museum) HERE.
Home to over one hundred vehicles restored to the highest standards exhibited alongside more than three hundred pieces of haute couture illustrating the historical and artistic evolution since the end of the 19th century, through thirteen thematic rooms. From an early automobile voted Winner of 1898 to a twenty-first century hydrogen prototype, passing through everything in-between from Jaguars, Cadillacs, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Ferraris, Aston Martins and Porsches; as well as the most iconic designs from illustrious fashion houses including Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Worth.
As you can see, I got rather carried away with my camera but I'd never seen so many amazing garments in one place. On my last birthday I'd been stunned by a single garment (HERE), this year there were hundreds of iconic pieces including the Rabo Rabanne Barbarella disc dress, Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup paper dress and Coco Chanel's leopard coat.
I absolutely loved this shawl and the Unic Tourer (1920) alongside it, both hand painted by Ukrainian-born artist Sonia Delaunay in 1924.
1. Gianfranco Ferre (jacket) with Christian Lacroix (skirt) 2. Jean Paul Gaultier 3. Nina Ricci 4. Paco Rabanne 5. Madame Gres 6. Lanvin 7. Yves St Laurent 8. Chanel 9. Givenchy by Alexander McQueen 10. Dior 11. Thierry Mugler 12. Jacques Fath (orange dress) with Balenciaga (black cape) 13. Carven (Green dress with embroidered roses)
I'd be tempted to sell my soul for the Belle Epoque-era velvet coat from the House of Worth (below).
Alongside a 1960s psychedelic jacket is a replica of John Lennon's Rolls Royce.
Above: Yves St Laurent throughout the ages. Below: Me in a hand embroidered maxi from Monsoon's Artisan collection, secondhand Superga organic cotton flatforms and Chanel sunglasses.
In the grounds there was a converted horsebox serving drinks and food so we sat in the sunshine sipping cappuccinos and doing our best to befriend the numerous Spanish cats enjoying the 18°C winter sunshine.
We strolled along the seafront, past hardy sea swimmers and bikini-clad beach volleyball players, stopping for a glass of Victoria beer served with complimentary Spanish olives on Paseo Maritimo Antonio Banderas, named after Málaga's second most famous son (more on the first one shortly).
I'd told Jon that all I'd wanted for my birthday was to feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and sit outside with a glass of red wine and a plate of tapas....and that's exactly what I got!
After lunch it was time to pay the Museo Picasso Málaga a visit (HERE). Born in the city on 25th October, 1881 Pablo Picasso is Málaga's most famous son. Built in the first half of the 16th Century, the Buenavista Palace, has over 285 works donated by Picasso's family and, through the use of skylights, is flooded with the pure, brilliant light which has attracted artists to Málaga for decades.
Back at home the Garman Ryan Collection includes Picasso's Tête de Femme en Profile (1906) bequeathed to the people of Walsall and on permanent display in our town's New Art Gallery, meaning Jon & I partially own a Picasso!
I've been to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona where I saw his masterpiece, Guernica, but there was something extra special about seeing Picasso's art in the city of his birth. Even Jon, who claims to get potted out whenever we visit a museum, got excited by his ceramics.
Being an amateur classicist I loved Picasso's obsession with the minotaur. A minotaur can't be loved for himself, he said in conversation with Francoise Gilot in 1964, At least he doesn't think he can. It just doesn't seem reasonable to him, somehow. Turning to a sketch, a minotaur watching over a sleeping woman, he says, He's studying, trying to read her thoughts, trying to decide whether she loves him because he's a monster.
Towering above Málaga stands the fortress of Alcazaba (HERE), built during the period of Muslim rule in the 11th Century. The hill had previously been occupied by the Phoenicians as far back at 600BC and later, after 205BC, by the Romans who built the theatre at the base of the hill.
We made it down to the fan park in time to watch the second half of Spain Vs Morocco where, after a lacklustre forty-five minutes and a tense period of extra time, we held our heads in our hands as the national side were thrashed on penalties, breaking the hearts of our fellow spectators.
After popping back to the apartment for more layers, we headed to Cañadú, a vegetarian restaurant where, in the shadow of Pablo's childhood home, we sat outside until late, feasting on stuffed aubergine (me) and an organic deluxe burger (Jon) and meeting up with our beautiful friend, Jeni, who lives just up the coast.
After saying our goodbyes, we made our way back as we had an early start planned for the following morning although we couldn't resist stopping to watch this incredible dance performance along the way.
In less than two days, Málaga had already captured our hearts. What would tomorrow bring?
25 pounds and 2 1/2hours! What a wonderful place for a vacation
ReplyDeleteWe loved it! I'm so envious of our friend living there! xxx
DeleteLooks like an absolutely fabulous time. Love the idea of the museum with dress to go with the cars.
ReplyDeleteIt was! the museum was inspired, something for everyone. xxx
DeleteOh what a time you have had! The first museum you visited just seems like the perfect museum for Gareth and I. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant photos too and I'm glad you got your birthday wish. How lovely to meet up with a friend too!
I don't blame you spreading your visit over more than one blog...it keeps you in Malaga just a little bit longer. xxx
That first museum was wonderful, I've never seen such gorgeous clothes (or cars). It seemed like a bizarre mix at first but worked so well, something to interest everyone!
DeleteIt was lovely to catch up with Jeni, it's usually once a year at End of the Road. How lucky is she to live there?
It's a long, slow job going through all those photos but you're right, it helps extend the trip! xxx
If you watch Big Bang Theory you will understand "holy cr*p on a cracker".
ReplyDeleteAnd if you don't, well "holy cr*p on a cracker", get me to the Museo Automovilistico & de la Moda and I may never need to leave :-} What a fabulous couple of days AND you managed some footy.
Hello Jayne! I've never seen Big Bang Theory but I might have to adopt that expression.
DeleteThat museum was absolutely incredible - and it's dog friendly, too! I love vintage cars and I love vintage clothes so whoever came up with the idea of combining both was an absolute genius! xxx
Now you wouldn't have passed my daughter as she was in route in December 6 to Morocco. Your trip, spontaneous and all, so far is a dream. I appreciate you sharing.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if our paths would cross! I've been to Morocco twice, a return visit is well overdue. I hope she loved it as much as us! xxx
DeleteMy eyes are great green gleaming orbs of envy -- like the headlamps on an Hispano Suiza. Gads, I'd give blood to don a cloche and a fur and go for a run behind those 12 horses! * Note: on 21st C paved roads. Those wooden spoked wheels and funky tires with tubes, y'know... *
ReplyDeleteThe hats, the dresses, the cars! I'd be visiting the museum of automobiles & fashion daily and using my zoom lens to get a closer look at the exquisite details -- until security hauled me away for petting the beads and velours.
Ahem. How may one obtain an autographed copy of Lord Jon in that pizazzy yellow chair? This IS his new 8x10 glossy, yes?
Hello Beth! That museum was an absolute dream, my eyes were out on stalks at one point, I couldn't believe I was in touching distance of some of those iconic pieces. I'm not sure which were more valuable, the cars or the clothes (Jon assures me that it's the vehicles!)
DeleteFunnily enough I've been nagging Jon to let me replace the knackered and saggy leather sofa in the lounge for a yellow velvet Chesterfield. With all these compliments maybe he'll finally relent! xxx
Wasn't it just your luck that it started raining shortly after your arrival in Málaga? I held my breath but was relieve to read that the sun came out for your birthday! Both the automobiles & fashion museum and the Picasso one look as it they're well worth a visit. I've got an old friend who moved to Málaga many years ago, perhaps it's time to pay him a visit, so that I can see it all for myself. Like Jon, I tend to get "potted out" in museums, but I think they would have had to drag me away from all those garments!
ReplyDeleteYour Monsoon dress, by the way, is an absolute dream, and I love that photo of you reclining on that chaise longue and the one of Jon in that amazing chair! xxx
I think I'm like one of those cartoon characters followed by a black cloud! Mind you, at least it was warm, if it had been cold I'd have probably sulked!
DeleteBoth museums were fantastic, I've been meaning to visit the Picasso one for years but had no idea about the Automobile & Fashion one until a day or so before we left for Spain, even Jeni hadn't heard of it and she lives there! Jon often gives up on pots and sits outside waiting for me to finish, I was amazed by his enthusiasm for Picasso's ceramics! xxx
But at least it didn't rain on your birthday!! Happy Birthday, my dear friend! What a lovely place to spend it. I adore the mix of cars and fashion in a museum, especially how they matched an outfit to each car! I would have loved the Picasso museum as well. Thank you for the fun videos of the lights and the dancing! I love the very old against the very new - we just don't see that here (very old for us is the late 1800s).
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sheila! I know - what a relief! It was so soggy on the Monday night I thought that would be it for the next three days. The museum was incredible, I loved how they're paired the appropriate garments with vehicles, you could really get a feel of each period. I love the contrast of old and new, too. xxx
DeleteThat trip was so meant to be!!! Beautiful architecture, fab food, lovely people, and those cars!! To be honest, it was actually the couture clothes that made me grin and drool. Proof that the cream of couture fashion of the past.... always stays fantastic
ReplyDeleteIt was fabulous! I love vintage cars but it was hard to concentrate on them with all those incredible clothes. They certainly don't make them like they used to! xxx
DeleteWhat a fabulous way to spend your birthday and start the silly season. I’d go to Malaga just for the fashion and automobile museum and Picasso. I got really giddy seeing it all xxx
ReplyDeleteIt was wonderful, Xmas without the mad shopping or Stop the Bloody Cavalry! xxx
DeleteYou got rain, but only so it would be even more impressive and apt that it didn't rain on your birthday!
ReplyDeleteLoving your Monsoon Artisan dress- you fit right in with all those glamorous outfits!
That veggie food looks nice but what was everything!?! I require information!
I'd love to see Picasso's work in real life! It's so bold!
I love the dancing and those Christmas lights look fun!
I really missed you! I kept checking your blog daily, hoping you were back!x
Be seeing you!x
Awww, thanks Kezzie! We did get rain, I think it would have rained in the desert if I'd gone there on my birthday, it follows me around!
DeleteTo be honest nearly every menu was in Spanish, we ate at vegetarian restaurants to ensure that if we did get our translations wrong at least I wouldn't end up with fish or meat - I think between us we had a seitan rissole, courgette and spinach croquettes, minced veg balls in a tomato sauce and a vegan kebab (also minced veggies), the salads/veg accompaniments were a spicy noodle salad, a chickpea chilli, ratatouille, braised red cabbage and a pickled carrot salad. xxx
I knew you'd love Malaga! My husband loves that museum. The first time we went it was closed in the morning for a private BMW event. So we went to lunch and hung out until it reopened. And we enjoyed every moment of it!
ReplyDeleteThe castle is always great.
It's our favourite place to spend February. While you were at 18C and sun, I've been at -18 and overcast.
Just finished paying for our flights. Hopefully you will return to Malaga. The entire coast is magical. The Alhambra in Granada is what started our journey's there.
We did! It was fabulous - so much to see and do. The auto museum is breathtaking. I bet the private events are really swanky.
DeleteWe visited Frigliana, Nerja and Ronda many years ago and always said we'd love to go back and see more of the Costa del Sol but got obsessed with India and forgot all about it. We'll definitely go back.
At -17° I bet you're counting the days till you escape! xxx
PS My next post should bring back a few memories for you!
Glad you got everything you wanted for your birthday.
ReplyDeleteThat museum is something else-seeing clothes displayed out in the open like that is quite a rarity.
I did! I was so pleased to be able to sit outside with bare arms and ankles and feel the sun on me.
DeleteThe museum was incredible, all those iconic pieces in one place. I took hundreds of photos, it was so hard deciding which garments to include! xxx
You certainly packed a lot in during the first two days! of your pics at the fashion/car museum my favourite was that fabulous bright red sports car teamed with the bright red dress with bodice bling. You can't go wrong with those flight prices, what a bargain birthday trip. Nice that you enjoyed the Christmas knees up with the locals - the Spanish know how to do Christmas that's for sure! Betty (wood fairy)
ReplyDeleteWelcome home, Betty! Short haul flights are still such a novelty to us after decades of India, it's brilliant just to dump our bags and go off and do stuff rather than stagger about in a haze of jet lag!
DeleteThere was so much to do and see, we'd need a month to see the museums in Malaga alone.
Imagine slipping into that Valentino dress and driving along the Spanish coast in the red Maserati playing Living La Vida Loca at full blast - heaven! xxx
How utterly fabulous! That car and fashion museum is just the most perfect fit for me and Mark. I'm going to look at going after our big trip to Japan next June. Can't wait to see more xxx
ReplyDeleteJapan?! I can't wait to hear about that! I think you and Mark would love Málaga especially the climate. xxx
DeleteOh wow, what a perfect way for you to spend your birthday. Those flights were a brilliant bargain, well done on snapping them up without any hesitation. I love that light show, what a start to the holiday!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sue! It was a wonderful spur-of-the-moment trip - cheaper than staying at home and having the heating on! xxx
DeleteWhat a glorious post. A sumptuous exhibition, I love the dresses and garments but was surprised at just how stunning some if those cars were. Glad that you enjoyed Malaga I have been there but only spent a day, I remember the Cathedral being quite marvellous. The Picasso exhibition looks grand, I love his work. The sun on your face for your birthday is a request I can relate to. I am a November 1st birthday and whilst I share it with all the saints the weather is always grey and grim
ReplyDeleteHello Carole! I thought I'd been too distracted by the clothes to notice the cars but they were utterly gorgeous!
DeleteBefore we visited we'd only ever spent time at the airport. The sheer scale of the cathedral took my breath away, I peeped inside and the smell of incense and beeswax was wonderful.
Picasso was a genius, he could turn his hand to everything and he excelled at it all.
Maybe you should celebrate your birthday in the sun next year? xxx
Oooh just what I needed - some Vix sunshine, travel and culture! Glad you had such a fab birthday trip. Museo Automovilistico & de la Moda - what a GENIUS idea to show couture and vintage cars together - amazing! Stay warm all xxxx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Elaine! You'd be in your element in that fabulous museum. The idea of displaying couture and cars together was truly inspired, worth the airfare alone! xxx
DeleteI'm so glad your birthday wish came true! I've been to Malaga; it was the airport we flew into on my one and only trip to Spain. We spent several hours there on the day we returned and I would have loved to have gone to the Picasso museum but the grandsons would have been bored.
ReplyDeleteMalaga does look such an interesting place; the combination of couture and cars was rather fabulous. Oh, those clothes and some of the cars were astonishing! It was good to see you were allowed to sit on the furniture - fabulous photos of the both of you. I find they use pine cones to deter you from sitting in some of the houses I've visited recently; first having seen it at Lissadell House in Co. Sligo. Very unfriendly...
How very appropriate to have a beer named after you!
Hoping you're managing to keep warm,
xxx
I can't recommend Málaga highly enough, especially at this time of year when you can walk around with bare arms during the day and it's mild enough to sit outdoors and eat late into the night.
DeleteThe car and couture museum was astonisingly good, I loved that there were lots of swanky chairs visitors were welcome to sit on. You're right, those sprigs of holly and pine cones on chairs at NT properties seem so unwelcoming!
Bloody hell, it's so cold. xxx
Lovely to see you enjoying some sunshine! and beer at a terrace!, particularly those Victoria de Málaga beers, obviously! ;DD
ReplyDeleteAlso glad that your birthday is a holiday bank here in Spain!, hurrah!.
I've never been to Málaga!, I think that those museums and architecture and atmosphere totally rock!, it's a lively city too!.
That fashion&cars museum is so fabulous!
besos
Get yourselves to Málaga, Monica! We loved it, I can't believe that they've got 32 museums, I wish I could live there like our friend does! xxx
DeleteLooks like you had the most perfect winter Birthday celebration - Magical xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Flis - it was ace! xxx
DeleteI love the juxtaposition of the clothes and the cars. Such an imaginative way of displaying the exhibits. Arilx
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a genius idea? Something to please everyone, even couples with separate interests! xxx
DeleteI love, and am a little bit envious of your spontanaity. I'd like to say I don't have it because I have a little one, but I've always been an over-planner. Your break looks amazing. Jon looks like a Bond villain in that yellow chair. The gul-wing Mercedes is amazing, and all of those dresses. I love Picasso too, and have also been to the gallery in Barcelona, but never been to Malaga. It looks fantastic. xx
ReplyDeleteMálaga is wonderful, I can't recommend it highly enough. Like Alicante, it's not at all "touristy", English isn't widely spoken and most of the menus are in Spanish with no translations available.
DeleteThat was the first gull-wing I'd ever seen. I thought the collection of couture was worth a few quid but Jon tells me that the cars are worth millions! xxx
Sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed Malaga , I have been there a couple of times . So glad you visited the car and clothing museum , isn't it a surprise . A superb car collection and an amazing and so varied couture. It was just perfect for us John did cars , I did clothing.
ReplyDeleteWe were last in Malaga in 2018 .
I loved the Auto museum, the pairing was such a clever idea especially as there aren't many couples like Jon & I who love both clothes and cars! xxx
DeleteOh I loved that street dancing at the end! What a perfect place to spend your birthday Vix. The Cathedral is stunning. I would love to visit the Picasso museum there. Like you, I have visited the one in Barcelona. Good to hear that cats can be co-owners and managers of restaurants. Hmmmm, I am worried that Jon is plotting something though, sat in that grand chair....
ReplyDelete(see you over at part two - I thought I'd do my catch up read in order.....apologies for the torrent of comments)
Aaaah, I'm so glad you've made it to Spain - we've never been to Malaga, though Pete's wanted to go there for some time. We're not beach people, but as it's an old city, and one with a big university, it's far from a resort town. Those museums look absolutely brilliant. (In my experience, everywhere in Spain has a good museum, it's a very cultured place.)
ReplyDeleteGood lord that museum looks AMAZING all those cars and wonderful clothes!!!I'm so glad you got your warm sun and red wine xx
ReplyDelete
