In The Swim

It was a frosty start to the week, I had to break the ice in the birdbath when I dashed outside to collect the weekend sales from the Kinky shed on Monday morning. After my Wii Fit workout I packaged everything up and caught up with Blogland before Jon joined me for breakfast.

I felt the need to plait my hair when I put on my Naked Generation dress, going full-on Cottagecore, as the kids call it. Tony called to tell us that Covid had finally caught up with him - a miracle he'd not caught it sooner considering he works in retail - so Jon did a mercy dash with some groceries, knocking the door and leaving them on the doorstep. Fortunately he's triple jabbed and he just feels like he's got a cold.

I spent the majority of the day ironing, photographing and listing summery gear on eBay including some recently acquired pieces by Agnes B, Monsoon, Anthropologie, East Artisan by Anokhi and Band of Gypsies. Despite promising us a warm day, it was quite chilly despite the sunshine.

A customer got in touch asking if they could pick their purchase up after they'd finished work so I lounged on the chaise with my latest read, another Tudor epic by Philippa Gregory waiting to hand over their parcel.

Jon made tea, a Punjabi tikka masala with paneer, jalapeno peppers, capiscums and ladies fingers - delicious! We watched more of the Finnish Noir, Deadwind, later.

On Tuesday, after my Wii Fit and breakfast, we drove across Walsall to visit the dentist and, due to the pandemic, the first time I'd been in over two and a half years! As it was such a gorgeous morning we parked a few streets away and went for a walk in the sunshine. Jon visited during lockdown when he broke his crown so just needed a check-up and a scale and polish (charge band 1 - £23.80). Meanwhile I needed my fractured tooth repaired, a rough edge filed down on another tooth plus a scale and polish & a check-up (charge band 2 -£65.20). Lord Jon paid for my treatment, what a sweetheart!

WEARING: Dilli Grey dress in Rani pink & Toast cowboy boots (both eBay), 1970s sunglasses (charity shop)

PK has a reputation for being the kindest and most gentle dentist in the borough, in normal times the waiting room is full of nurses, consultants and surgeons from Walsall's Manor Hospital. Like us, he lives to travel, he's just back from a week in Instanbul, there's lots of photos of Greece in reception and he once spotted me when we were in Mumbai but couldn't attract my attention. He never scrimps with the anesthetic, as you can see from the photo, my face was frozen for hours!

For weeks now I've been feeling sluggish and annoyed with myself for slipping into bad habits so earlier in the day I'd written myself a Fit at 55 Manifesto and pinned it to the fridge door. No more eating after 6pm*, one mug of tea with milk with breakfast & then herbal tea and water for the rest of the day, fancy coffees for weekends only, smaller portions, daily walks and the return of swimming. I swam two to three times a week for years but I got to know so many people at our public baths that I spent more time chatting than swimming so decided to save money and knock it on the head.

*Unless we're on holiday or invited out.

Jon is keen to join me and after a shuffle through the drawers we realised that we needed lightweight sports towels (we own two bath towels and two hand towels) so popped over to Decathlon for a couple. Browsing the swimming aisle I noticed swimming caps designed especially for those of us with long hair - who knew such things existed - so snaffled one of those, too.

After lunch I stripped down to a bikini top - it was that warm in the sunshine- and continued with the garden tidying, leaving Jon to work on Gilbert. The magnolia is out and doesn't it look fabulous against that blue sky? The hyacinths were from a National Trust garden we'd visited last year, they were selling bags of spent blooms for £1 - they've come back beautifully.

Wednesday, kicked off in the same gloriously sunny way. I did my Wii Fit Workout, dyed my eyebrows and lashes and caught up with blogland before joining Jon for breakfast. We nipped over to our favourite Black Country town for a bit of charity shopping and came back with a leather biker jacker, some Moroccan earrings, an Alexander McQueen "Swallow" sweatshirt (which retailed at £179!), a vintage Indian screen printed silk scarf, a 1970s chopping board (I can't resist retro kitchenalia), a 1980s lined cardi, a 1980s cotton midi dress, a Superdry casual shirt, a white cotton slip (mine!), a Japanese tea pot, a 1960s straw boater and a 1970s batik maxi skirt. Jon got two teeshirts but they went in the washing machine straightaway.

I lost count of the number of people who admired my East Artisan by Anokhi midi dress, which I'd found on eBay listed at a fraction of the original price last Summer. The copal beads are one of my favourite clearance shop finds and cost me 50p last year, the oversized 1970s Polaroid sunglasses came from a car boot sale donkey's years ago.

After lunch, Liz popped round for a coffee and a catch-up, after she left we walked down to Walsall's Gala Baths for a swim.

There's been a public baths in Walsall since 1850, the first located where Asda now stands with the water from natural springs beneath which were steam heated. Open seven days a week, it had an unsupervised area for men and a womens section with a female attendant. Each day was divided into first and second class hours and in a time when few homes in Walsall had access to running water and personal hygiene was often neglected, the public baths played in valuable role providing the townspeople with the facilities for a proper wash.

In 1896 the Central Baths in Tower Street opened and included slipper baths, Turkish baths, swimming pools and medicated baths. They were demolished in 1959 and replaced with the Gala Baths which opened on 6th May, 1961 at a cost of £380,000 and included a competition pool 110 feet long, seating for 800 spectactors, a brine pool and a training pool, all of which are still available for public use.

The brine baths are our favourite, they're heated to 34°C and the salt water is much kinder on the skin. We downloaded a timetable and went to the adults only session, swimming a total of 16 lengths. A lady complimented me on my elegant swimming technique which I put it down to my fancy swimming cap!

It's rum night! That soon rolls round, doesn't it? We shall be watching Interior Design Masters, for some light relief after a few nights of Scandi Noir.

Cheers & see you soon.

  1. How lovely to be within walking distance of a decent pool - I do like the sound of 34 degrees and salt water.

Your Naked Generation dress is quite gorgeous. Cottagecore is a lovely expression.

Cottagecore is a fab word, it sums those of us into gardening, crafts and cotton dresses a treat! xxx

  3. Not only am I envious of your wonderful outfits, but now I am envious of your dentistry charges. It is impossible to get an NHS dentist here, in fact I think it's supposed to be one of the worst areas in the country.
Love the swimming cap, and I couldn't imagine you swimming any way other than elegantly. Xx

  6. The Gregory book covers screams "deluxe edition". How is it deluxe? Better quality paper? Bookmark to match the cover? I'm dying to know.

I love swimming but the public pool nearest to us has NO parking anywhere. The lot is tiny and the neighbouring streets are for residents use only and involves a fine if you are caught.

I did join a gym with a lovely pool meaning to go to the aqua size but it was only on when I was at work. At the weekends, they rented it to a local school for swimming lessons and the few times I did try and go after the kids were finished, honestly, their Dads were creepy. Ogling does not begin to describe their poor manners. Younger, fitter than me women wouldn't use it then either.

Anyhoo, have a lovely week, with any luck my Daffs might be out by May!

    1. Ithink it's deluxe because its hardback, with posh paper and a ribbon bookmark! A friend passed it my way, very generously.
We're so lucky to live within walking distance (a mile, door to door) of the pool and that it has adult only sessions. Swimming pools are definitely then place to go if you're looking for a partner, the only way to stop men chatting me up when I went alone was to keep swimming and never stop - at least it kept me fit.
SEnding you sunshine, warmth and hopefully some daffs very soon! xxx

  7. I'm not surprised you got compliments on that lovely dress, Vix - you are a vision of spring! You match the magnolia blossoms - they are blooming here too. I pass one on my way to work every day.

Score on the McQueen! I hope you turn a good profit on it.

I'm so glad you got your teeth taken care of! I neglected mine for years, and I still have ongoing issues with them. Hooray for your dentist to freezing you up - mine also gives me happy pills.

I've also recently recommitted to my health, doing a series of strength training exercises every day, and eating better. It's not like we're getting any younger! 55 for me this year (eee).

Rum sounds good - perhaps a little reefer for me. ;-P

I knew you'd approve of that McQueen. Can you believe it was marked down to £2 and on the clearance rail? It's the third McQueen garment we've found in the charity shops for under £3 - nobody but us must have heard of him!
I'm so glad my tooth was sorted out quickly.Like you, I was a bit lax with mine back in my hospitality days and paid the price for years. Jon was terrified of dentists after some bad dentistry years ago but I introduced him to mine and he's got over the fear and can't believe how painless it can be.
There was a feature on the news about how getting fit at 55 sets you up for your later years, I still want to be dressing up in fab frocks when I'm 80, no elasticated waists ever!
      Enjoy your evening chill-out! xxx

  11. You and your garden are looking lovely and clearly embracing spring! That pink Dilli Grey dress is divine! Glad Lord Jon funded your dental fixing. You found some lovely bits and pieces at the chazzas this week too. How weird that you should mention swimming. I too used to swim regularly a couple of times a week, but knocked it on the head because I found that I spent more time dodging others than actually swimming. Plus, I had to drive to our nearest pool and it was knocking quite a hole in the day. Mind you, I didn't have a long hair swim hat, so hair washing was also part of the deal. I've been toying with the idea of cold water swimming as I don't like the strong chlorine odour from our local pool, but that's best started in summer. xxx

    1. Thanks so much, Claire! I'm hoping the jade green or midnight blue Dilli Grey dresses pop up on eBay one of these days.
How funny about the swimming, I was chatting to another woman who'd just restarted swimming in the last fortnight after many years. The swimming hat is really comfy and pulls on and off easily without taking half my hair with it. Walsall used to have a lido but I'm not sure I'd have been brave enough outdoor swimming in this country! xxx

  12. Ah, the pool looks lovely!!! I have been twice to out local pool but it's a 2 mile walk (albeit through fields at one field) and having to check on appropriate sessions times scuppers me a bit from being spontaneous. It's not huge though so it can be a bit crowded.
A brine pool is intriguing! Not heard of public ones!
You have some lovely summery bits in the shop! Love that coral dress!

The dresses you wore are so beautiful!! I really liked the cottage core trend that started last year but of course, like you, just wore what I've got already!
Thought of you on Tuesday night as I went to a Wetherspoons to have some dinner before my orchestra rehearsal!

    1. You won't feel like swimming with a four mile round trip to the swimming baths! The Brine pool isn't massive and rarely gets crowded at the adult only sessions, the gala pool is a different matter entirely, you risk being dive bombed by a schoolkid!
I was very disciplined with my stock, I was tempted with several of those dresses, the coral dress and the Monsoon maxi especially!
I'm hoping that when the kids get tired of cottagecore we'll be able to snaffle all their pretty dresses when the turn up in the cahrity shops.

In my teenage years I used to frequently go to our local outdoor brine baths at Nantwich with my mates. I would add, this was years before I eventually learned to swim, so clearly eyeing the local talent played a big role!! Keep up the good work!

  15. With friends I made the first road trip of the year yesterday and, like you, we rejoiced to see several ancient magnolias in bloom in small towns along the historic highway. There was even a burst of yellow in a hedge of forsythia snug alongside an old brick house. Time to spread out the seed packets! (We start indoor tomatoes on Saint Patrick's Day.)

My arthritic knees envy you that heated saltwater pool, Vix. And you make a good point about the water quality: our local fitness center pool is chlorinated to the level of bleach. It ate my swim suits and nibbled at my skin.

  16. Oh, I like the look of your Gala baths! What a treat to have a choice...we have a saline pool in what is now the 6th Form college but it's only 25 metres and only open at weekends and very early mornings. Good luck with your new swimming regime. I remember the days when people went to the 'baths' to do just that. Strangely although we didn't have a bathroom we didn't use the 'baths' nor did mum use the laundry facilities which were also available but launderettes probably took over from that.

Fabulous chazza finds; I love the teapot! Fabulous outfits, too, the perfect weather for floaty cotton frocks. Those copal (?) beads are just gorgeous.

  22. Oooh your beautiful frocks!! You look so fab in them too. I'm not looking in my frock box until I've cleared away my cold weather stuff lol I still have a lot to get rid of - the best of it goes to charity - I have an enormous bag of painting rags now - and I've still got a big bag of stuff to eBay.

I'm trying hard to rehome things with purpose and to think about that when I bring stuff home with me too. It's quite overwhelming - so I am aiming to do one hour a day sorting out my clothes. At the moment my workroom looks like a jumble sale - but I need to rationalise/organise my wardrobe so badly and I don't want the whole house full of sortings lol.

There's something in the air with tooth woes! My mister had a Happy Birthday Tooth Infection a few weeks back and is now on a looooooooooonnnnnnnggg waiting list for an extraction - my neighbour has been waiting close to 12 months as he can't run to the £300-£400 they want as a 'private' non-NHS patient extraction. Gah.

The swimming sessions sound lovely - I'm sticking to the rowing machine and air walker - terrified of falling on slippery floors (I have vestibular probs so falling over is my superpower). I need a manifesto too!

Smashing charity shop swag - our local clearance YMCA closed down (boooo) but we've discovered that it has relocated to another branch even more local to us (YAYY!!!!). Everything is £1 and you really have to root around for the gems (which I love) - I came away with Italian silk trousers and a beautiful silk paisley dressing gown - the mister scored a fabulous cotton twill Alexandre shirt. Love it.

Hope this sunshine is here to stay (even if it shows up dust and cobwebby corners) - take care all xx

I was so lucky with the dentist appointment coinding with my broken tooth. What a hellish price to pay for an extraction - I think I'd search online for a reputatable dentist in Europe and combine a few days away with geeting it sorted!
The swimming is wonderful. I was terrified of slipping when I used to go the the hydrotherapy sessions at the brine baths follwing my hip replacement. I notice they sell non-slip pool socks now - who knew about all this new fangled sports equipment? Decathlon was a revelation.
