The Distancing Diaries - 20th & 21st March, 2021

Saturday heralded the equinox, the first official day of Spring, and also marked a year to the day when we went into lockdown and I'd started my Distancing Diaries (part one HERE). Jon got up, made tea and brought it back to bed although we couldn't lie in for long as we'd arranged for a painter and decorator to call at 8.30am and give us a quote for painting the new window frames. I stripped and changed the bed, loaded the washing machine and swept the upstairs rugs whilst Jon and Stuart chatted about what we wanted.

Frank hung out with his best friend, Kitty from next door. The neighbours say they sleep together on their bed during the day.

After our sausage sandwiches and buoyed up from last night's Gardener's World, Jon continued to clear the area which was once planted with bamboo whilst I followed him, bagging it up and sweeping the path. Once we'd filled three sacks we moved the geraniums we'd left over-wintering in the shelter and watered them, had an alfresco coffee and then went on a litter pick around the block.

For those worried about it, Jon had managed to repair his grab stick.

Back at home, I replaced a button that had popped off my waistcoat during the morning's exertions, filled in the census online ready for submission on Sunday and, after a mug of tea and a biscuit, spent a pleasant couple of hours stitching in the company of 6Music.

Wear:Sleep: Repeat saw the return of Friday's quilted waistcoat, worn with a matching Phool midi skirt and my Armor Lux aubergine & navy Breton top (eBay).

The details: Vintage Indian screen-printed silk scarf (charity shop), Ilse Jacobsen handmade rubber boots (retail), detail from my waistcoat, beaded earrings (present from G'n'T), retro sunglasses (Jaded, London sale 2018)

Tea was a broccoli and cauliflower balti with wholemeal basmati rice and a few sweet potato chips on the side. Later we watched Grayson Perry's Art Club and a couple more episodes of Amsterdam Vice and had a few glasses of rum.

On Sunday I was up at 6.30am. I submitted the census, did a load of washing, pegged it outside on the line and brought mugs of tea back to bed where we lay and read until 8.30. We had toast for breakfast, I painted my nails and we watched The Andrew Marr Show.

It was a dull, cold but dry day and Jon set to work on attaching the netting to the trellis on the garden fence in a bid to make it litter-proof. It took the best part of the morning but next time a scumbag tries to jettison their trash through our fence it might bounce back and slap them in the chops.

Meanwhile, I took stock photos in the garden and uploaded my listings to eBay.

After a break for noodles, I wrapped the eBay weekend sales and Jon planted the echinacea bulbs we'd bought from Wilko last weekend. I put the ginger root we'd bought the same day in some warm water to soak ready for planting on Monday. We sign-bombed the fence outside the cricket club as it's an area where we're always having to litter pick and got the thumbs up from our neighbours, Surinder & Tim, who joined us for a walk around the block.

Wear:Sleep:Repeat meant I rewore Saturday's Breton top, this time beneath the Hmong dress I'd bought from eBay last week. Any dress that I can wear with a woolly hat and my wellies is a winner in my book.

The details: African brass bangle (belonged to my mum), Frida earrings (festival friends & neighbours, Shilpa Silver), vintage high heeled wellies (jumble sale), Kashmiri papier mache bangles (India)

Knackered from his adventures in fencing Jon suggested a simple tea of Ryvita, cheese and pickles, something I was more than happy with.

It's the new series of Line of Duty tonight, we've been on countdown since the BBC announced it was imminent a fortnight ago. We might try & squeeze an Amsterdam Vice in beforehand.

Stay safe, happy & healthy and see you soon!

  1. Just been watching 1st episode of Deutschland 89 which we had recorded, it's gripping, I love the poison in the coffee ploy - it's very like The Americans, which I got obsessed with. I hope your efforts to deter litter in your garden work. your waistcoat and skirt were made for each other and the stripy breton really makes it interesting and fun.

  2. Your outfits are fantastic as always. I love the yellow boots! I hope Jon's litter proofing works and I do hope if anyone tries it will bounce back and slap them. I enjoy meals like your last one with the cheeses and other goodies. We eat like that often in the summertime. Happy spring Vix! xxx

  3. We've watched the five previous series of Line of Duty and loved them. No idea when Number Six will appear in Canada.

Husband has got hooked on Vera and Das Boot.

I was so glad when you said you ate a biscuit! It makes you more human in your diet, lol

    1. I hope Canada's roll-out of Line of Duty isn't too far behind us. It's brilliant so far.
I can't get into Vera, a bit too plodding but I bet Das Boot is good.
Jon is a real snaker, I rarely eat between meals but as we don't have lunch on a Saturday biscuits are allowed! xxx

  4. Love the black dress. It will look great when we have sunny days here.
I hope the netting stops the litter bugs. Disgraceful that people just chuck their rubbish into someone else's garden. Grayson'sArt club is fantastic, such talented people. Johnny Vegas was so charming, I was quite emotional listening to him talking about pottery.
Thank you for a year of blogging, you have lightened and brightened our world.

Johnny Vegas made me a bit weepy, too. He's such a lovely man, just like Grayson.
Thanks for keeping me company over the last 12 months. xxx

  5. Vix, I had to hop back and read your first Distancing Diaries post as well and it made me feel a bit emotional. At the end of it you wrote that we could get through this together and I really do feel that I have travelled through this year with you. Thank you. x

  8. Stop teasing me with pictures of cheese please ! I might go to our fancy pants department store later and treat myself later to a wee piece of Brie which you lot pay 89p for here £5.00 plus. But I do savoir it and make it last. You should electrify the fence that would deter people.
Ahh well you heard the news the olympics is for the locals only, we can go, but tbh I think it might be a bit of a damp squib. We will see. I am still covid conscious and I don’t fancy putting myself or my family at risk vaccinations or not.
Shame about Bristol the professional rioters out again. The pictures saddened me.
I am glad Jon fixed his stick handy Andy he is. I watched Paul snap his new airbrush In half yesterday it was one of those slow motion moments , it was like “ I couldn’t believe you have just done that I don’t think he could, but he is going to repair it today. Why are men so rough!! Anyway take care and keep safe.

    1. I'm sorry! We don't eat cheese all that often but Jon couldn't resist that goat's cheese log when he spotted it in the reduced section in Morrison's last week.
Don't you fancy going to the Olympics and cheering along our boys and girls? They've spoken of how much they'll miss their fans, imagine how thrilled they'd be if they saw you and Paul & the kids flag waving? I'd love to go.
Wasn't the mayor of Bristol wonderful? He should be running the country.
Blokes are so clumsy, no wonder they need to know how to mend things, they're the ones who always break them! Loads of love. xxx

  9. How cute are Frank and Kitty! So nice he has such a lovely feline friend.
Your outfits are fabulous. I love the contrast between the purple and the yellow boots in your first styling. The dress you layered over that fab jumper is fantastic as well. It's fun following your Sleep Wear Rewear challenge. My outfits lately have been anything but stylish, I didn't pack enough clothes so I've been wearing the same two or three outfits for 2 weeks. I'm not cut out to be a minimalist. I love a closet full of old clothes I'm super familiar with.

  10. I went back and reread your first distancing diaries post - it's shocking how quickly the time has gone by. I have read every post of yours in lockdown and enjoyed them all seeing your garden, your house, your clothes and your food!, they've been a real tonic so thankyou.
Let's hope that's the end of litter in your garden - that's a hell of a stretch of fencing Jon had to do.
Line of Duty was great last night wasn't it.

  11. Everything fits you like a glove. You look great in your new dress. I watched 'GW' too and was rather dismayed to hear Monty say that you should sew your seeds neatly and not just throw them in - oops, too late. I sewed mine on Thursday and some of them are already poking through the compost looking a wee bit overcrowded! I also watched 'Line of Duty' and when they went to the 'suspect's' second flat, I was shouting at the screen 'the fridge, the fridge'! Do you remember what was in it?It's all unfolding nicely as per!Our Census has been delayed up here. It's going to be an interesting week in Scottish politics, I wager.xxx

  12. Now peering under mulch for sprouting lettuces here in the Midwest. The new gardening year has indeed begun! My boxes can easily be weeded by hand; hence, my admiration for Jon's efforts in clearing that bamboo bed. Methinks this battle has just begun. I once raised a stand of black bamboo for the zoo's red pandas and it was "territorially aggressive."
My two panels of trelliage shrink in comparison with Jon's yards of netted fencing, but they could accommodate at least one of your mini-signs. I'd buy one from you if I could get to a festival in 2021. As it happens, I'll try to remember how to chain stitch...

    1. I think the window for bamboo clearing might be down to days now as it's atrting to shoot - I'll give him a gentle nudge this morning to get a buit more done before we're invaded by pandas! xxx

  13. Hard to believe it's been a year. But the end does now look as if it's in sight. Great news that you've had your first vaccines. We've had ours and got the second one at the beginning of May. Light at the end of the tunnel I hope.

Thank goodness we've reached the sowing season. I'm going to the garden centre tomorrow to get some dahlia seeds to sow along with Monty. I don't even like dahlias particularly :)

I really am loving your craftivism signs. I need to get on making some for us. The litter drives me nuts, but as you say, no point moaning, we just have to go on cleaning it up.

Anyway, on a more positive note, the Anokhi blouse you got the other day is absolutely stunning. :)

  16. Isn't it mind blowing that it's been a year! I thoroughly enjoyed reading every installment of your Distancing Diaries, though.
    So, Frank's got a girlfriend :-)
The sight of that row of terracotta pots totally cheered me up. Hopefully it will spur me into action as well, as I just can't seem to find my gardening mojo right now.
Saturday's outfit is a sight for sore eyes. I love the matching waistcoat and midi skirt and the contrast of the purples with the yellow of your boots! Sunday's Hmong dress looks absolutely stunning with the Breton top, vintage wellies and and pom pom hat as well.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the netting's deterring properties and would love to see it taking revenge on the littering scumbags! xxx

  17. I hope your netting has the bouncy quality of a trampoline! Glad to hear Jon's grab stick is mended and of course he managed to mend it...I loved the new banner; excellent sentiment. I've seen a sign on gates and kissing gates on countryside walks: 'Take nothing but photographs and leave with nothing except memories'

Lovely outfits and accessories as always and the pom pom hats have become part of your 'look', I feel. You'll miss it when the weather warms up!

We watched 'Line of Duty' but OH fell asleep half way through; too much beer, I fear.

Frank has got himself a girlfriend! How come they sleep on the neighbour's bed and not yours? Strange creatures cats.

Stephen absolutely loathes Kitty and won't let her near the house (he was still asleep when I took that photo) hence the reason Frank has to sneak next door for a cuddle! xxx

We have one bed just full of tulips so hoping it does well. Been wrapping ebay sales this morning and thought of you. I do not have anything half as exciting as you do but I like the thought of stuff going on to someone else to love rather than languish not worn. I had a similar tea as you don't just love teas like that I could eat like that all the time ahh a Mediteranian diet would suit me but not the lads. Well I will be silent soon and think of all those who lost their fight with Covid but we owe it to them to keep on enjoying every day hey! lots of love Shazxx GOOD job on the trellis by the way.

I like an easy tea sometimes. Occasionally we have 'stuff teas' which is basically a plate full of oddments of feed, little of which actually go together but it's handy to use up left overs - and minimal effort required.
