The Distancing Diaries - 10th & 11th March, 2021

The predicted high winds and showers had already taken a grip when I got up on Wednesday morning although it didn't bother the lads who took their time inspecting the garden when I let them out. I did my Wii Fit workout, caught up with blog reading and wrapped my eBay sales before joining Jon for breakfast.

We had a visitor! Dave the brickie popped round with his wheelbarrow to take away some of the bamboo Jon had dug up last week. We've got plans for planting most of it elsewhere but there's enough to share.

Wear:Sleep: Repeat continued with Tuesday's skirt, worn with a Banjara mirror work blouse and topped with my British Army camo jacket. For the first time in ages, I plaited my hair and wore it pinned up (inspired by a fashion photo of the Rodarte models Sheila had shared on her blog HERE).  Jon says I look like I should be off to a festival....in my dreams! Although a few have announced their intention to go ahead this Summer with the current standoff between the organisers and the government over cancellation insurance I'm not holding my breath.

The details: Afghan Kuchi earrings, Frye Campus boots (both eBay), vintage leather belt (charity shop) and a tangle of tribal bangles (from all over the place).

The Banjara top in the photo of the parcel Katy sent me last week. I'm often asked how I wash clothes like these. In all honesty, it's as little as possible. I spot clean any marks after I've worn them and always hang every garment I've worn up to air overnight before putting them back in the wardrobe. The colours on many traditional Indian textiles aren't colourfast so I wash them individually by hand in lukewarm water using liquid hand soap. As wringing might break the mirrorwork I'll only wash them on a day I can leave them to drip dry outside.

The parcel also contained a pretty pale blue Indian-made pure silk scarf but as it was starting to wear thin, I chopped it into rectangles and using some trimmings from my stash as drawstrings repurposed the scarf into jewellery pouches for the dowry coin necklaces I have listed on eBay. It took most of the day but with it lashing down outside and with 6Music for company it was most enjoyable.

Lunch was a Moroccan vegan pasty, comfort food for such a dismal blustery day, followed by a catch-up with Liz.

After I'd completed my sewing I had a bit of a tidy-up and after we'd both showered machine washed the bathroom rugs (labelled dry clean only) and hung them to dry in the utility room.

Tea was roasted vegetables with halloumi and a bottle of pale ale.

Later we cracked open the rum, watched a documentary about the origins of Stonehenge and two episodes of Deutschland '89 (we're trying to ration ourselves, we don't want it to end!)

The galeforce winds we'd been warned about had made their presence felt overnight and it was still extremely rough outside when I got up on Thursday morning. I moved the kitchen windowsill plants into the utility room for a soak, did my Wii Fit workout and put the upstairs plants into the bathtub when I'd finished.

Jon was most confused when he got up, I usually do this on a Saturday. He has a hard enough job remembering what day of the week it is at the best of times!

After breakfast I swept and mopped the floorboards upstairs and once Jon had finished with his admin and bill paying, we set off for a walk around the block via Johal's. The rain had stopped and it was gloriously sunny but it was ridiculously windy.

We spotted a few signs of Spring along the way.

We'd just got back in when Richard knocked on the door with the post. Remember me telling you that Linda emailed me for my address as she'd painted my portrait and, in an act of lockdown kindness, wanted to send it my way. Isn't she clever? Here's her IG page.

Wear:Sleep: Repeat saw the return of Wednesday's British army jacket, worn with a vintage Alpnani kaftan (eBay) and me-made beer mittens and pompom hat.

The details: Hindu deity belt buckle (present from Liz), Mjus boots (charity shop), 1970s Italian-made deadstock sunglasses (vintage fair, 2014), malachite earrings (Rajasthan), Afghan headpiece worn as a choker (eBay)

After our noodles, we changed into our sturdy boots and did some work in the garden.

I'd cut back and cleared the area where a lot of our ferns live on Saturday. It's a rare bit of the garden that gets some sun so Jon wants to put another of the raised beds we bought at the weekend here.

In a few months, they'll be this tall so we needed to act fast.

At the moment the pond area is a bit of wasted space as it's too shady to sit in (I want sun!) so we've moved the ferns, some bamboo and a few of the grasses that grow like mad elsewhere in the garden and planted them here. Hopefully, we'll have a lush green pond area by the beginning of the Summer.

Once we'd finished I went indoors and put the houseplants & the freshly laundered bathroom rugs back and Jon stayed in the garden as he needed to give his bike a once-over as he's got to cycle back from the garage when he takes Gilbert over for his MOT next week. He ended up staying outside longer than he'd intended due to a particularly violent hailstorm.

Tea was a salad with the rest of Ray's sourdough (we'd frozen half), my homemade potato salad (with chives from the garden) and Reine de glaces lettuce from the greenhouse.

Once I've sorted out what I'm re-wearing tomorrow we'll be settling down for a few hours in front of the TV and trying to resist the temptation to binge-watch the rest of Deutschland 89.

Stay safe, healthy and fabulous!

  1. We had hail this afternoon as well, and like you yesterday was wet and windy.

Love your laundry tips 😉 There finally seems to be a (slowly) growing awareness that not everything needs a 90 minute machine cycle after one wear.

More than a little envious of your Johal Supermarket - wish I had one like that nearby.

    1. We've had a bit of all kinds of weather over the last 24 hours.

I often wonder if the modern clothes in charity shops are tatty because of the poor quality of the fabric or if the previous owners have just washed them to death!

Johal's is a veritable treasure trove. xxx

    2. Quality of clothes? It might be the fabric. I have certainly seen a change in the quality of quilting cotton over the last 20 years.

    3. Even synthetic fabrics like viscose, acrylic and polyester are poorer quality than their 1970s counterparts. x

  2. Wednesday was out wet day and today is cold again. Threats of snow loom again, but soon (I keep saying that) it will really be spring. Linda caught your smile-I kept scrolling back and forth to your photo and her painting.

  7. Love the painting you would suit rainbow hair!!! Mine is purple now. I so love ferns every time we go to shinjuku goyen park and we visit the greenhouse I am dying to Nick a cutting, but Paul stops me. I have a asparagus fern in the living room but it drops all the time. But I have had it for years.
I love spring flowers, we are going to Kyoto so see the Sakuras as Paul has a work meeting next weekend so we thought why not plus we are going to see if we can try now.
We come out of voultary lockdown in 9 days and I will be sad as I have got a lot done, both at work and home. Work has even said I can work from home if I Like. Which is nice. But I like to see what vintage goodies we get in. So I will see how I feel in a couple of weeks. Take care and keep safe.

What a treat a trip away will be. I think a lot of us have been a lot more productive without the ditractions of the outside world. I did think lockdown would send me mad after a fortnight but after more or less a year of it I'm still really happy.
      Loads of love. xxx

  8. Your friend has done a really fun painting of you and captured your personality in there and your bright blue eyes beautifully. I love the idea of the ferns around the pond, you will get more wildlife and ferns love shade so it makes sense. I like the banjara top, it would also look good with massive silk harem pants :) the bags you made are so pretty and really thoughtful so your buyers get a little surprise.

I thought the frogs would appreciate the ferns. Mr & Mrs Blackbird were having a fine old time after we'd finished, hopping around where Jon had been digging and chirping away.
I was going to chop that Banjara top up but when I tried it on I loved the fit. I used to live in silk harem pants back in the 2000s (50p a pair in Goa back then!), I haven't worn any for years! xxx

  9. I love the painting of you - how amazing! I have a small collection of blogger art that I really should frame up and display. I did some house clean-up today and feel so much better (L is such a clutter-monster). We got some fantastic news: we are now allowed to gather with up to 10 people outside again, as of now! 13. Love your 'festival outfit', looking fabulous!, I'm admiring your camo jacket versatility as it goes with everything!. Great advice on washing mirrorworked ítems as little as possible and airing them instead. Even if I'm a huge fan of machine washing anything, even wash-by-hand labelled ítems. But embroideries and indian textiles are a completely different thing.
Lovely to see spring is coming and lovely that you're preparing your garden for a lush season!.

  18. I don’t know how you two are going to have time for festivals when the time comes, you’re so busy haha.
I like the khaki jacket. How lovely to have a portrait done of you. Aren’t people kind. The sewing case I had sent me this week had me in tears it’s so beautiful and I know how much time and effort went into it.
The weather is bobbins here, rain, wind and bloody cold. I’m ready for some heat.
Today has been an emotional one. The final accounts arrived for auntie Gladys estate. I can’t believe how upset I am, I didn’t even want to open the envelope. Isn’t it awful how final it all feels.
I’ve a zoom meeting tomorrow with the No Rules Textile Society. That should be good for a laugh, I’ve no idea how that works, I’ve only done my Pilates classes and we don’t see the other participants or speak to each other. Wish me luck xxx

    1. It's lovely to get a gift made with such care and attention. Did you watch Jenny Eclair's Craftivism programme on BBC4? We saw it on the I Player last night, it really is a good watch, I think you'd love it.
We've had a bit of everything this week, glorious sunshine, torrential rain, gales and hail. It plays havoc with deciding what to do each day.
You were far better than I was with dealing with all Auntie Gladys's affairs, I put off dealing with my parents' estate for ages. It's still so raw with you, you're more than entitled to a wobble.

  19. Hi Vix - just loving the vibrancy of your Banjara mirror work blouse. I've found hand-washing my Indian stuff in cold water with a tiny bit of liquid soapflakes, and then rinsing in cold water with salt added to the water works. But every time I wash anything like this I hold my breath.

Like you, I try to air clothes after each wear - right side out and inside out. I've even considered using the greenhouse/shed as a hanging space over winter, when the weather keeps stuff off the washing line! I'm back to chucking a big thick sheet over my hanging rails to stop sun-fading too.

Winter is great, as the layering usually keeps the tricky to launder stuff away from your skin - I always try and wear a thin cami top or t shirt under my top layer to keep them fresh.

Sheila's Rodarte ringmasters jacket is lovely. I love to see a piece like that mixed into an everyday wardrobe. Also - your portrait is just fabulous!!

Braids suit you, Vix! I braid mine into a long scarf and then use the extra length to tie into a fancy up-do. I love the volume it gives when you come to take it down.

Re: the Moroccan vegan pasty - have you tried a Jamaican pattie/patty? You can get meaty versions and veggie versions - dunno about vegan. Sainsburys have Island Delight Spicy Vegetable Patties and Tesco do Port Royal Mixed Veg ones. Really nice - I suspect they are tailored to UK palates - but they are still nicely-spiced!

Right I'm off. Sending good vibes for a painless MOT.
Take care all - big love to Maryland - hope you're doing OK.

    1. Kathy mentioned the salt thingy too, she works with theatrical costumes in normal times so it must be okay! When Jon gets round to getting a garage built and we have a spare shed I've toyed with the idea of taking the front off and using it as a drying shelter.
I started reading Loved Clothes Last this morning and she has lots of great advice for not washing your clothes every five seconds and fecking up the planet.
I'm so hit and miss with plaiting my hair, sometimes it goes up perfectly and other times its a disaster. Liking the plaiting with a headscarf.
I have tried the Island Delight patties, I'd always have one of those from the late night chippie after a night at Moseley Dance Centre back in the 1980s. I've never been a big pastry eater but every once in a while they make a nice change to noodles! I'll have to place an order with Tony, he occasionally pops into Tesco, Jon will only shop at Morrisons' although it's Greek Week at Lidl on Thursday so he'll be there at the crack of dawn stocking up on Mythos, stuffed vine leaves and plakis gigantes.
I'll pass your good vibes on to Gilbert! Loads of love to you and yours, Elaine! xxxx

That red top is beautiful, and I too wondered how you care for an item like that. I gave away a couple of clothing items in the past because they were going to be too much trouble to wash.
