The Distancing Diaries - 27th & 28th January, 2021

On Wednesday morning the temperature was above zero and the snow had all but gone. The sunrise was a pretty shade of pink and it was light before 8am.

I did my Wii Fit workout and had a blog catch up before Jon came downstairs for breakfast. We'd bought a reconditioned hard drive for my elderly PC, the package that had been delivered on Monday, so leaving Jon to copy my files in readiness for the big switchover, I went outside and took stock photos.

After Jon had finished I uploaded my listings to eBay, took delivery of the Superdrug order I'd placed last week, sanitised and put it away in the bathroom and had a bowl of noodles for lunch.

Wear:Sleep:Repeat. I'm rewearing Tuesday's Indian cheescloth blouse, untucked this time to show the embroidered hem. I combined it with my devore bellbottoms (gift from Suzanne, much missed in Blogland), polo neck jumper, 1960s-does-Edwardian boots (car boot sale,2011) and the Tarantella suede waistcoat , part of the suit to which Monday & Tuesday's skirt belongs.

The details: Brass bangles (inherited from Mum or bought in charity shops), brass earrings (Indian women's empowerment charity, Goa 2001), Murano glass bead and hammered brass necklace (handmade by my friend Jolene)

After lunch we went for a walk around the block and once back I gave the lounge & hall a good going over. It doesn't feel like five minutes since I'd last cleaned but the wood burner has been on almost daily and it doesn't half generate a lot of dust, not to mention me trampling mud & melted snow throughout the house when I've been taking stock photos in the garden.

All ready for later! I've always enjoyed our Wednesday night rum but these days I'm looking forward to it more than ever. I don't think I've got a problem, these days I get excited about the fortnightly bin collection. The montony of lockdown life!

Armed with a glass of wine we watched BoJo's latest announcement and ate half a pizza, a few sweet potato wedges and salad. Later, with rum, we watched the rest of season 2 of All The Sins (even better than the first series) and last Friday's instalment of Rebecka Martinsson: The Arctic Murders.

In Thursday my hip (the unoperated one, not my bionic hip) had me up and out of bed before 6am - it's been a bit crap for days. After kicking over the lads' water bowl, walking into the doorframe and tripping over the bathroom rug, I managed to get downstairs in one piece, swallowed a couple of pain killers (the first I'd taken since last May) and did my usual Wii Fit Workout.

Realising that my knicker drawer was almost empty I emptied the washing backet, loaded the machine and hung the laundry to dry in the utility room. I left the teatowels to soak for an hour in a bucket of diluted stain remover, wrapped my eBay parcels, then threw the tea towels in with Jon's white tee shirts on a 20° Ecowash. After breakfast Jon whizzed round to the post office to drop the parcels off but came back with them as, for some inxeplicable reason, our local branch was closed. Maybe tomorrow....

I rummaged in the Kinky Shed and decided to list all the waistcoats on the menswear rails, taking photos in the garden and realising halfway through that we'd got rather a lot.

My Wear:Sleep:Repeat challenge continued....

I rewore Wednesday's Tarantella of Walsall sage green suede waistcoat over my Hindu Kush vintage Afghan dress (eBay, 2019).

The details: Italian-made Mjus leather ankle boots (charity shop, 2019), Turkoman earrings (eBay), enamel pendant, also Turkoman (vintage fair, 2014)

After our lunchtime noodles I edited & uploaded my photos and listed the waistcoats on eBay before taking a walk around the block. We looked for signs of Spring and found a few. We've got another shedload of snow forecast at the weekend but with the green shoots, earlier sunrises and longer days I can't help but feel cautiously optimistic.

Jon wore his new hoodie. He was shopping (online) for Tony's birthday present when it happened to fall into his basket. Obviously hugs are illegal at the moment unless you live together!

Talking of shopping, a couple of things arrived for me, these incredible antique Afghan Kuchi cuffs which I spotted on eBay last week and did a happy dance around the kitchen when I won the auction. I fell in love with a similar set in posh handicraft and antique emporium in Goa twenty years ago but they'd already sold to Liberty (the London department store). The boots I'd treated myself in the sales last week also arrived which I'll show as part of an outfit in my next post. I'll never be a minimalism-embracing, zero shopping or purchase tracking kind of girl, I'm too much of a hedonist.

You can just about see this beautiful woman's cuffs in this wonderful photo from 1937.

After a blog catch-up we tucked into the rest of Tuesday's potato and mushroom masala with jacket potatoes and cheese.I think we're going to watch The Investigation on the i-player later, another Scandi thriller series if you hadn't already guessed and even more exciting, it stars Rolf Lassgård, my favourite Wallander.

Iffy hip be damned, I'm off on a mission tomorrow morning, there's a particularly interesting blue plaque that needs to be investigated. Stay safe and see you soon!

  1. I'm sorry the other hip is giving you pain. Maybe it is your fluky weather and not an early sign of ongoing woe. I applaud you still getting that work out done. I seem to wear the same clothes multiple days-so I'm really wear, sleep, repeating. I finally splurged, well not much of a splurge, on a 6 pack of hipster underwear, so now can get rid of the worst offenders in my undie drawer.

    1. It's fine today, thanks, Sam! I blame the damp. It has a flare up every now and then. It does need replacing but I'm in no rush!
Good for you with your new fancy pants! xxx

  2. Imagine Philip’s joy if he were to find himself in the midst of all those waistcoats. He does miss a good clothes shop rummage. He’s got new pjs though as I thought he looked like a tramp in his Onslow vest. We now look like Mr and Mrs Suburbia, I bought myself a pair as well. At least we will be okay if we have to run out in the middle of the night now haha.
I hope your hip calms down, you’ve done so well. It’s seems ages ago since your last flair up.
There’s a blue plaque on a terrace house on our way upto Bacup, I’ll have to investigate it xxx

You did make me laugh with your matching PJs. I hope you don't have to run out in the middle of the night but at least you'll impress the neighbours if you do.
Hip's sorted already, it's behaved itself for ages. I blame all the rain.
Show us your blue plaque! xxx

  3. sorry your hip is being gyppy. Top respect for feeling like that, and still doing the wii fit, I think I would have just gone straight back to bed. Love that dress, it is such a lovely colour and looks really good on you. All those waistcoats look fab, I do love a good waistcoat, mens or womens. Looking forward to hearing all about your blue plaque mission, sounds very exciting (well, as exciting as it gets in lockdown!) I do know what you mean about the little things - the Morrison's delivery is practically greeted with fireworks and a 21 Gun salute each week, just because it is something different happening!! Although this week our lives have been made much more eventful with the arrival of a new kitten who is definitely keeping us amused and providing a lockdown diversion!

That dress is one of my absolute favourites, although i probably say that about all of them.
I am excited about the blue plaque mission and your description of the joy that accompanies your Morrison's delivery made me laugh out loud. How lovely to have a kitten, 15 year old Stephen exhausts me, goodness knows what a teeny ball of energy must be like! xxx

  4. Rockin' those bellbottoms. I love Jon's new hoodie too. Thank you so much for leaving your lovely comment over at mine. I also love the pic of the beautiful lady and her baby. I bought really big knickers last week. I need them now! The Investigation is so good, I'm trying not to binge-watch to the end (can't wait for Spiral Saturday). Happy Friday to you. xxx

  5. Ugh, your poor hip, Vix. Don't you love aging? "This is how I am now" is constantly in my head as various screws and bolts become loose and damaged on my body (can you tell I've been building a TV/fireplace unit??). Hooray for the matching suede vest! I love both outfits! Ooh, your brass stuff is so cool. How awesome are those ginormous silver cuffs!? I can't wait to see them. Snuggles for the lads, so sweet you just want to wake them up. Jon's tee made me laugh - have you guys watched Kobra Kai? It's a Netflix series based on The Karate Kid, with all the same actors 30+ years later. It's excellent, although I think Koala Kai is my dojo of choice!

    1. It's the gift that keeps on giving, those wayward silver hairs and the struggle to do up your own shoelaces. That DIY sounds a challenge.
One of those lads woke me this morning by standing on my chest and wailing until I got up, you've got to love them.
I don't know Kobra Kai but we both loved The Karate Kid, I shall see if Jon can track it down! xxx

  8. Bummer about the hip, I hope when this is all over and the NHS has time to spare you will get wait listed for an op so you can get a matching pair. No signs of spring here. I am going to check out the tv viewing you have mentioned as we usually like the same things (like rum and coke too!). Another lovely dress, I am a minimalist I think, if I did a post on my wardrobe (wont as mine would be boring) it would take 2 minutes! I have enough outfits for 7 days and no more - I have been doing this for years since my bhuddist friend told me she does - it clears the mind, but I think it would drive yours mad! Betty x

I have absolutely no restraint when it comes to clothes and jewellery (and looking at my boot rack, footwear too). If I can afford it I have it! xxx

  9. Ohh no not your other hip, Paul is still getting used to his new knee, work have told him when this one settles he can get the other one done! I saw the news about your lockdown how long!! Stop those bloody Londoners ! I saw pictures of parks in london packed! Disgusting. And people were also turning up to airports with skis! I know what I would do with those skis!!
My mum wasn’t happy and my sister isn’t as she was wanting to come and see me in April, ha chance will be a fine thing. But she is a clothes designer and buyer for M&S so you never know! As she is quite pushy!
Love Jon’s Hoddie I need that in my life. After all I feel in a funk! And I need that to cheer me up! Take care and keep safe right off to hunt for that Hoddie lol.

    1. My other hip should have been replaced in 2010 but I've dodged the knife so far and shall do my best to avoid surgery until I'm a pensioner (my surgeon thinks I'm mad!)
I haven't seen any footage of people in parks or going on holiday although acquaintances of ours have just got back from a fortnight's holiday in Dubai. Nobody questions anything despite all this tough talk at the press conferences. Your sister could easily say she's working and visit you, nobody would question her. Jon gets really annoyed by the lack of control at the borders but it's pointless stresing about stuff you have no control over. I still think we were the only people on our flight from Crete who bothered with the two week quarantine or even filled the loaction form in.
I'll ask Jon who he bought his hoodie from and send you a link. Isn't that kaola cute? Stay sane! xxx

It's great that you continued with this challenge. I might try something similar myself. The Afghan dress paired with that waistcoat is such a pretty combo and I love the outfit with pants as well.
Jon's koala outfit is awesome. That koala print is adorable. I always loved koalas. One of the reasons why I wanted to visit Australia as a kid, I was quite jealous of my cuisines who showed me many photos with koalas:).
You have a great collection of men's waistcoats. I love when men wear waistcoats, it looks so chic. The cuffs you've got are fabulous...and that vintage photo of a barefoot lady with cuffs stepping on a train is wonderful.

Your outfit combos both surprise and if I wasn't being lazy(shh ) inspire! Love that blouse. Wow those cuffs were a great score! and that photo of the Indian lady is divine. the only heating we have i a wood burner so my (sad but zen) locksown routine is to dust the lounge every morning. No writing your name in dust on the piano anymore ha ha. I have made up so many little routines to look forward to during lockdown (yes you know the ginger beer one) but I say hey it is keeping us sane and giving us simple pleasures to look forward to. Instead of resenting the housework now I think how lucky I am to be safe in this strange time. Sorry Ivana but last time I went to Aus went to Australia Zoo and was facinated by the sleeping koalas I agree with you they are adorable. This regular housework is a revelation, isn't it? No more of this, "I'll get round to it when I've got the time", these days I grab my broom and a duster and get on with it - I can justify a lazy afternoon of reading blogs, browsing ebay and drinking tea when the house isn't in abject chaos.
I love settling down in my chair in the evening and having a clean room to do it in, bliss! I wonder if we'll be as houseproud when all this is over? xxx

  16. hope your hip will be ok, you seem to do exercise and walking in spite of the problems it may cause. Yesterday I had to post a parcel for my husband for something he had sold on ebay and I went to 3 post offices which were closed. After lunch I went over to my daughter's, on the other side of the city, and found an open post office there. Wonder if something is happening to post offices.

    1. Hello Pat. That's interesting about the post office, there must have been a national problem. the same thing happened a couple of months ago but I couldn't find out anything else. If you go on the Royal mail website you can buy postage online and arrange for the parcel to be picked up from home, it's around 75p per item but it's worth bearing in mind. xxx

She could hardly walk she was in so much pain and was all bent over but she was up and walking about within a few days and says she feels like a new women! 23. My mother was sometimes plagued with a stiff back whenever a weather front roared through and she complained that this inability to bend and stretch normally affected her cooking -- and her crockery. Being off balance, she couldn't put roasts in the oven and knocked bowls off tables. Papa's "help" consisted of telling us kids: "Heads up. Your mother's out of alignment." She did get some relief from heating pads and bags of cherry stones one could heat and "wear" in vests with pockets. Be kind to yourself, Vix.
