The Distancing Diairies - 7th & 8th January, 2021

Thursday morning was frosty with freezing fog. The lads weren't out for long and were already tucked up back in bed by the time I'd finished my Wii Fit workout.

Jon was up early as he needed to take Stephen to the vets for this thyroid check-up (all good) and, because we'd forgotten to taken the blueberries out of the freezer, we had porridge with bananas and honey for breakfast.

While Jon & Stephen were out I did a load of washing then took the plants down from the kitchen shelf and left them to soak in the sink. I wrapped more ebay parcels, ironed some stock and spent the rest of the morning taking photos.

Jon nipped down to the Post Office and was back in minutes. I thought he'd abandoned his mission but it turned out he was the only person there and was in and out in no time. We had noodles for lunch, I uploaded my listings to eBay and then we went for a walk around the block.

The temperature stayed at minus something all day and the ice was lethal. We had to walk in the middle of the road on our jaunt around the block, not that there's any traffic to endanger us. Over the top of my thermal bodysuit and leggings I'm wearing a vintage block printed kaftan bought from mates, Olds Cool Traders, a charity shopped cable knit hat and a maxi length crochet cardi Mum made in the 1970s from unraveled jumpers she'd bought from jumble sales.

I've been using PicMonkey to edit my photos for years but they'd updated their operating system and not only was the programme really slow but it was making the PC sound like a spaceship taking off so Jon spent the afternoon deleting files while I made myself scarce by cleaning the bathroom.

Tea was a Sri Lankan roasted cauliflower curry with yellow rice, using one of the SPICE SULTAN spice kits Tony had bought us for Xmas. (A fantastic idea for a gift).

INGREDIENTS (serves 2)

  • Small Cauliflower cut into florets
  • Thinly sliced red pepper
  • I medium onion, roughly chopped
  • Thumb size piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 can chopped tomatoes
  • Tin of coconut milk
  • 100 ml veg stock
  • Juice of a lime
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • Spice mix: coriander, turmeric, cumin powder, fennel seeds, cardamon pods, chili powder, fenugreek, black peppercorns, cloves, black mustard seeds (2 tbsp)

METHOD:

  1. Combine 1 tbsp oil, cauliflower & pepper on a roasting tray and cook in a 180°C oven for 40 minutes, turning halfway through
  2. Blitz ginger, onion and spice mix with veg stock in blender.
  3. Fry mix in 1 tbsp oil in a heavy based pan for 5 mins, add tomatoes, coconut milk, sugar, lime juice and stir thoroughly. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
  4. Add roasted vegetables, stir through and serve with rice.

We shared a bottle of Kingfisher and watched the latest government announcement while we waited for it to cook. We loved The Serpent, watching three episodes back-to-back the previous evening. After tea we watched a couple more. Superb acting, great costumes, stunning locations and an edge-of-the-seat plot. Highly recommended.

It had snowed through the night and when I opened the door on Friday morning the garden was white. After my Wii Fit workout I put away yesterday's laundry and replaced the plants I'd left soaking in the sink. After our fruit and yogurt breakfast I put the rest of the houseplants in the bath and gave them a thorough misting. Jon drove to the council tip to dispose of the cardboard from the wood delivery.

Regardless of whether anyone other than Jon and the lads see me, I wear makeup every day. I switch the radio on, sit on the rug in the spare bedroom and apply my slap. Wearing it means I'm ready to face the day. I always use Barry M's Feature Length mascara, eyebrow powder & extra waterproof black eyeliner and Sleek creme blusher in Crimson. I alternate between Maybelline's Superstay Matt Lip Ink in either Heroine, Romantic or Ruler, which I discovered back in 2018 and have worn constantly ever since (I buy mine from eBay as they're usually at least half the retail price). I've got two eye shadow palettes, Shipwrecked by Barry M is my current favourite (I usually use the earthy brown, khaki green, inky blue, brick red or dusky lilac).

I've never worn foundation. I've used Superdrug's Vitamin E Radiance Moisture Cream for over twenty years, I love the subtle gold shimmer, that it's cruelty free and costs less than a fiver...oh, yes and I also love that it doesn't smell of anything. I hate perfumed face creams. Nail paint by Barry M, as always (this is Salt Lake).

I swept the landing and dusted the bookshelf, the crafting cupboard and poodle parlour before joining Jon for noodles.

It had been snowing for most of the day although it hadn't stuck. We went for a walk, passing the doctor's surgery where a steady stream of the town's elderly were receiving their Covid vaccines. It seemed colder than ever and I was glad to get back inside after I'd posed for a photo in the garden when we got back.

FRIDAY: Vintage dress (present from friends, G'n'T), Doc Martens & 1960s leather backed gloves (both charity shopped), 1970s sheepskin trimmed jacket (Ebay), pompom hat (made by me)

I'm wearing a 1970s Collier Campbell for Liberty printed wool maxi. There's a matching marabou trimmed capelet that goes with the dress but I've packed it away as it seemed a bit over-top for walking around the block, even for me!

It was Jon's turn to go outside and break up the ice in the bird bath, we're doing this twice a day at the moment! Meanwhile I spent the rest of the afternoon sorting out my Ebay packaging supplies, answering questions, responding to offers and wrapping the latest sales. I did intend to touch up my roots but there's always tomorrow (and hats!)

Tea was a sweet potato, spinach and chick pea curry (recipe for the basic curry paste HERE) with some vegetable rice. It's Friday which means rum, cola, a wedge of lime and the final three episodes of The Serpent. I didn't realise until I did some online research that the series was written by the chap behind the wonderful Ripper Street, no wonder we love it.

Stay safe and see you soon!

I would wish you a happy weekend but do we even have them any more?

  1. I’m going to give The Serpent a go now you’ve recommended it. I was a bit hit and miss about watching it. Just watching gardeners world while tapping away on here. It’s so nice to see so much colour. A bit like your lovely outfits.
We’ve got snow and it’s bitter cold here. I’m glad we’ve nowhere to go. I’m fiffing and faffing in my craftroom this week. Getting my lines straight, as my friend says.
It’s so easy to get out of not applying our slap. When I spot myself in a mirror I think “crikey woman gets some mascara on” haha.
It’s great folk are buying at your stock on eBay. I loved the nightwear blog post. My comments keep disappearing for some bizarre reason.
Have a good weekend you guys xxx

A much warmer but grey and blustery day here today, my eyes were streaming on our walk around the block.
I wonder where your comments are going to? How very strange! I couldn't believe how popular the vintage lingerie was, it's cleared a nice space in the stockroom, shame there's no buying opportunities to refill it! xxx

  2. Weekends go pretty much unnoticed here too. Honestly, I'm in no hurry to leave home.
If I skipped makeup everyone would think I was sick, or deeply depressed. If nothing else, it takes some time and concentration, both good things these days.

  4. Days drag on and the weeks fly by. The only constant for us is bin day lol.

Now I'm avoiding going out at all and don't need to wear my mask - I may go back to lippie. I'm paler than a pale thing in paletown when the pale festival is on and I have a box of Mac lipsticks to get through before they go off (said the woman who was wearing Mary Quant lipstick recently, until it gave up the ghost). I think once you get off the putting-on-slap train it's awfully hard to get back on. I wouldn't know where to start - hurrah for pink hair distraction and Mac Russian Red.

Your Mum's cardi is just excellent and perfect with your hand knits - and the Collier Campbell is a triumph!

I was watching a Zoom talk by Mel from a Bag + a Beret/Vogoff earlier - what a lovely woman. I do hope they recorded it for future viewing as I missed the first 10mins trying to work out the time difference lol. Gawd.

Right, I'm off - have a cheery weekend, Vix; Maryland - if you're here - big love and I hope life is a bit brighter today xx

I used to only wear eyeliner and mascara when I went to India and I feel ever so dolled up when I put lippie on for the flight home. Now I wear it all the time when I'm there (except for the beach, that's a bit too weird).

  5. Your mum's ginormous cardi is making me itch to buy wool and start crocheting one! I could easily make something like that! I think this is how wool gets out of hand, ha ha!

I'm happy to see that the boyz are safe and sound, and good to hear that Stephen is well. Our current lockdown just got extended into February, but we are still allowed to be out and about, just no social gatherings of any kinds. We expect a surge in the next couple of weeks too, as all the people who broke the rules over Xmas are now getting infected. Scary stuff.

I had to stop using those lip inks, as they dry my lips out (the curse of big lips, dammit). I'm a glossy, creamy lippy fan, all the way. I love seeing all your eyeshadows - I'm an eyeshadow junky and MAC is my Barry M. I don't always wear my make-up on my days off, but I do wear it whenever I'm in public. It's good self-care!

    Have a lovely weekend, Vix!

I'm sorry that cases are creeping up with you, too. It seems sensible to lockdown till February. The experts keep telling us that its mixing that is causing these huge spikes but still the idiots continue to flaunt the rules. There's been anti mask rallies in London this weekend, it beggars belief!
I've only got one MAC product, an amazing poison green eye shadow, it's brilliant stuff. xxxx

  6. I remember how people would unravel 2nd hand woollens and reknit them; a real $ saver but usually done from necessity. The other thing was knitting slippers each winter for the family, reusing yarn. Times have so changed. Interesting about your choice of cosmetics. I've often found that women who consistently look good, such as yourself, don't actually spend a lot of $ on skin care and make-up, and tend to stay loyal to what they actually do use. I'm fussy about scents too, as some smells give me migraines.

    1. I love the idea of knitting slippers. People are so wasteful these days, I often buy things from charity shops that have been donated as there's a button missing.
I feel sad that so many women are convinced into buying expensive skincare and cosmetics by flash advertising campaigns and lavish claims. My cheap stuff never promises anything so my expectations aren't high but I'm rarely disappointed. xxx

  8. We have finally gone back in lockdown it was expected but the bloody idiots kept dragging their heels. So only going out for essentials schools are closed, Paul is back home annoying me and no Sapporo which I did expect. The tour operator contacted us yesterday and they were kinda panicking up in that region about having people from Tokyo so they gave us our money back, which the Japanese hate giving refunds!!!
So we will plan something again when it settles down. I am not to bothered as the major event organisers are not there. Which the kids love. So a bit miffed but what can you do. I can’t see the olympics happening at this rate. Not if new strains keep popping up all the time. But we see and we hope. Keep safe and lots of huggs

Loads of love back at you. xxx

I was surfing Ian Rankin (sound chap) as I'm reading his newest book and found an online interview (The Daily Mail, don't judge!!!) where Ian discussed his haven and precious things therein (his music room). As a music lover, he listed backstage passes to favourite bands and specifically mentioned The Charlatans! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9095749/My-haven-Ian-Rankin-bestselling-crime-writer-60-music-room-Edinburgh-flat.html. 12. Your Mum's crocheted triumph reminds me of the knitted coat I made myself back in 1978. I used to take it everywhere with me while I was knitting it, even to my work where I knitted at lunchbreaks! Anyway, by the time I finished it, it reached the floor and was far too long in the sleeves for me but it fitted my younger, taller sister like a glove so I gave it to her for her 21st birthday. She was receptionist at the North British Hotel (now The Balmoral) in Edinburgh and she sold it to an American tourist who was staying at the hotel and who admired it so much, she asked to buy it!Flippin' took me the best part of a year to knit it!Glad your Mum's coat survived. You wear it very well!Have a good weekend, both. Spiral Saturday (I'm trying not to binge-watch!).xxx

My eldest daughter has been doing her home schooling sat a computer this week, granny blanket over her legs and would certainly steal any such item. I wrapped up a couple of our tender plants Thursday night out in the garden, anticipating snow, but we didn’t get any. I like to put a bit of lippy on before I leave the house, even though no one can see with my mask on, it helps prepare me! I will be sure to check The Serpent out, thanks for the recommendation. 18. Evening Vix, how much love went into making that glorious long coat by your Mum?! I have fond memories of my Mum making things for us. I remember as a young girl we got invited to a wedding so mum made my sister and I long skirts then after we grew out of them she turned them into pillow cases. She still knits to this day. I love that you still put make up on every day I got good for a while but not so much lately. I did think of you the other day when I did an oil treatment on my hair. You are great at self care. Your shadow pallette looks pretty. Let you in on a secret long before I was brave enough to comment I used to trawl your blog for your beauty blogs because I love how you use budget buys. 19. We've saved 'The Serpent' for Sunday evening having finally finished (last night) 'Before We Die' - I kept forgetting to breathe whilst watching it and I'm sure the tension didn't do my BP any good!

I haven't seen any snow yet; although my daughter there was a sprinkling of it last night; I hate walking in snow and ice; it's so treacherous. You certainly looked wrapped up for the weather and your mum's crochet cardigan is superb! I can see where you got your thrifty ways from. You must cheer so many people up seeing you in your beautifully, brightly coloured outfits - Vix spreading colour and glamour on the streets of Walsall...

I didn't realise Sleek did a cream blusher; I had a recent hunt for a cream one online; but the one I bought - a Revlon stick one is too insipid, so I bought a Sleek powder one and I like it.I also used to wear the Vit E Radiance balm but my skin got drier as I got older and I had to switch to something richer; I did like the glow it gives!

It sounds as if you are keep you're local post office in business!

Take care and enjoy 'Spiral' tonight,

Ebay isn't a cheap platform but has such a huge audience so there's often a better chance of our goods finding the right person. When you factor in pitch fees, fuel and food & drink (and occasionally parking costs) for trading at fairs and festivals it's often more expensive - but nothing beats selling face to face!
Always lovely to hear from you, dear Mei! xxx

  30. Snow! How exciting, Vix, we never get it here in Melbourne!

You are dedicated to your makeup routine and that's great if it makes you feel ready for your day. I like taking a break from my usual blush and lipstick when I'm not leaving the house.

Will you and Jon be getting the vaccine? It hasn't been rolled out yet in Australia. X

    1. Hi Jess! We didn't have any at all last year, normally I can't stand the stuff but that's because snow disrupts everything, now everyone's staying at home it isn't a problem.
We'll definitely get the vaccine when it's our turn although as 54 year olds it won't be a while yet! xxx

  31. Weekends? What are they?
The maxi crochet cardigan is so nice!! Recycled wool, 50 years old, and still going strong - there's a lesson for anyone thinking clothes are disposable!!

    1. It's all very confusing, isn't it? The only reason I know it's a Saturday is that i don't do my Wii Fit!
It's mad to think that cardi is 50 years old and that the wool it's made from could possibly be even older! xxx

    2. I hadn't thought of that, and it still looks amazing!

  32. The long cardigan your mother knitted from old jumpers is so beautiful. The colours are gorgeous. A little masterpiece of knitting. It matches your outfit perfectly. Such a great look altogether.

  34. Glad to see you're looking so fabulous for your walks, and love your delightful outfits, the colours and prints, and this crochet coat is so amazing! (even if it catches on doorknobs ;D it happens to me all the time!)
    Lovely photos of the lads!
I've spied some cool eyeshadows at Barry M. but I'm afraid that my days of shopping in british businesses are coming to an end. So sad!

    1. My daily walk is my social life these days, even if nobody see me!
I'm so sad that you can't buy British any more, our post Office won't even accept parcels to Europe because of the length of time it takes to complete the paperwork, bloody Brexit! xxx

  35. Glad to hear that Stephen is doing well. Your Mum's crocheted sweater coat looks like the perfect thing to wear while curled up on the couch watching a movie, or reading.

I used to wear brow pencil and lipstick every day, and tried to keep it up since I started working from home, but since Christmas I can't even be bothered to do that unless I have a Zoom meeting for work. The amount of time I spend alone is killing my motivation to keep up appearances.

  36. I still have weekends! I still work on them, but I don't wear makeup on those days. (I try to dress nicely and put makeup on on weekdays so weekends can feel more casual and it adds structure to the week.)

You look adorable snuggled up in your wool maxi and bobble hat!
