The Distancing Diaries - 3rd & 4th December, 2020

Thursday morning was grim, it had been raining since the early hours and icy cold. Neither of the lads were keen on staying outside and were already back in bed when I started my Wii Fit workout. After breakfast Jon & I decided against the walk we'd originally planned to do, instead I did a quick catch-up with blogland, thrilled to visit Ivana's blog and find myself! How fabulous are her sketches? You can visit her HERE.

I took myself off into the lounge & cracked on with my crochet whilst Jon defrosted the freezer and started compiling our online supermarket order to be delivered in a fortnight's time thus avoiding the Xmas madness.

Just before our noodles Richard the postman arrived bearing parcels, which included a recent eBay finds, a 1960s India Imports of Rhode Island handloom pinafore dress with a huge single pocket which the seller had listed in the wrong category so I won it for £5.50. The photos in the listing made it hard to see whether it as maxi or midi length and was delighted when it turned out to skim the floor, perfect for winter layering or summer sunshine.

After lunch I completed my latest make, a hat for Jon. He wanted a pompom in burnt orange (yarn left over from my granny square waistcoat) and I must admit it's a great choice, much better than a matching one.

As a treat I had a bath, I'd not had one in months! The houseplants get to spend more time in the tub than I do.

Tea was bangers, mash and peas...not particularly photogenic but very tasty and perfect for such a miserable day. Later we watched half of the utterly compelling The Trials of Oscar Pistorius documentary series on the BBC iplayer.

Friday was cold but mercifully dry. My first job of the day was to book a National Trust excursion for my birthday on Sunday which proved tricky as nearly everything in tier 3 was fully booked but I persevered and found something in the end! After my Wii Fit I did a load of washing, hung it up in the utility room, and took the plants down from the kitchen shelves for a long soak in the sink, giving my Aloe Veras their monthly spritz while I was at it.

After breakfast Jon popped to the vets as it had been a fortnight since he'd taken Frank and the vet had suggested a follow-up appointment. Meanwhile I'd had a flurry of eBay sales the previous evening so I packaged them up and Jon whizzed them round to the Post Office before popping to Morrisons for some groceries.

I put the upstairs houseplants in the bath to soak before settling down to a bit more crochet. Richard arrived with another eBay find.

Words can't express how fabulous this vintage 1960s Indian dress is in the flesh, it's hand woven with the most amazing neckline and huge puffed sleeves, almost museum worthy. I was slightly worried that it might be too big as the seller had listed it as a 38" bust but she must have been confused by the "38" woven on the label, the European size and not the chest size. The bust measures 32" so it's a perfect fit. Phew! I wasn't looking forward to taking it in.

After our noodles I suggested that we drove to the clearance charity shop as the rain had returned with avengeance and a walk around the block didn't seem very appealing. Jon soon had his mask and coat on.

We had to giggle, not only were several of the items we'd donated when I'd cleared out the Kinky Shed adorning the models in the window, Jon even managed to buy back one of the books I'd dropped off the last time we'd visited! We also came back with a 1980s patchwork bomber jacket, a Paul Smith shirt, a British-made jumper and a pretty Indian cotton blouse that stank of that hideous lillies on LSD washing powder but looks pretty on. Another fail was spending 50p on what I thought were a pair of black lacy tights that turned out to be both footless and an XXL. They'll be going back next week! Serves me right for not taking my reading glasses shopping with me.

Apologies for the poor picture quality - it was almost dark and peeing it down (but thankfully no sign of the predicted snow) when Jon took my photo. It was clearly an Afghan kind of day, one of my vintage dresses and my beloved coat which is the warmest thing known to man (and me!)

Tea was pizza, salad and a beer! We're drinking rum later and shall be watching another of Steve McQueen's Small Axe films (Red, White & Blue was stupendous) as well as the final installment of the Oscar Pistorius documentary.

I won't be posting until Monday so, in the meantime, stay safe and see you when I'm 54!

    1. Thanks so much, dear Shaz! Aren't Ivana's sketches gorgeous?
Our posties are the unsung heroes of this year, always cheerful and often the only other people many of us see and I love them even more when they bring Ebay purchases!
The charity clearance shop is great, it's the size of a supermarket, never gets crowded and the soundtrack is always really funky. Even if we don't find anything it's just a lovely place to escape to for an hour! Loads of love to you. xxx

  3. Happy birthday dear Vix! I hope you'll have a fabulous birthday weekend. I'm thrilled you like the sketches and that you included them in your post.
Your kaftan blue Afghan dress is lovely and it looks great paired with the warmest coat you have...and it is a fabulous coat as well. Very pretty boots too.
The black cotton dress is absolutely stunning, you're right- it wouldn't look out of place in a museum!

That black dress with embroidery is fabulous. What a great find. Your chazzas are great, you see a lot of dross in ours, lots of acrylic, although saying that, I have bought three dresses from one shop this year.

Three dresses is good going but you're right, ours is jam packed with nasty synthetics. I often see something that look good from a distance but when I touch it I'm repulsed! xxx

  7. Happy Birthday, Vix! I hope it's a fun one!

I was so excited over your illustrations! I pointed at my screen and yelled at L, 'Hey, it's Vix! I know her!' like you were a movie star. :)

I'm interested to see how you style that brown maxi dress - I have trouble wearing that style of top, as it seems to cascade from my boobs like I'm smuggling a troop of girl guides under there. I ADORE your embroidered 60s dress - what a creation! I can't wait to see you wear it!

I get a kick out of finding my own things in thrift stores too!

Well done on Jon's toque (Ramones, woo!)! I was chatting with my mom and asked her if she had any wool - "give me the colours you think are ugly" is what I said (she doesn't like autumn tones), so I'm likely to get a bag of some wild stuff to play with. Now, I have to figure out where the crochet hooks are...

I've never had much in the way of bosom so that straight across cut is good for me, wraparounds, scoop & V necks on the other hand look appalling, who needs to see a bony rib cage?
I hope your Mum finds some wool for you. I was excited to see that the clearance chazza now sells new wool very cheaply so if I get desperate I don't have to wait for an online delivery. xxx

  8. Have a very happy birthday weekend! I'll have to pay attention how you take care of the aloe vera plants as my daughter brought one home after an on campus activity of potting plants in use dishes-hers is in a little china sugar bow, with a lid along side. I'm sorry you are getting such cold. W ehave had brilliant weahter-hihg 30's and even some 40's ncxt week, or 3-8 degrees Celsius which for December, is completely warm in Minnesota.

I nearly killed the aloe plant when I first got it by watering it once a week. I repotted it and now just spray the top every 2 -4 weeks. In 6 months it's grown so big I've now got five plants!
Send us some of that warmth, will you? xxx

  15. That embroidered dress (crewel and felt applique?) is astounding; do wear it on your birthday and turn heads! Many happy returns. I deliberately avoid charity shops I've donated to for a few weeks in case I'm weak and want to buy back my old stuff.
I had a birthday this week too, and now have a lovely pile of new books to dig into; I never buy books new but I do love them as gifts. However they will stay in the pile for a couple of weeks until I've dealt with all the library books on the shelves. Our local librarians gaily said 'take as many as you want' when lockdown was imminent. I'm not sure they were anticipating my husband, who managed to stagger home with 47, on top of the 24 we already had on loan. Bring on the rain, bring on the grey days, I'm ready for them!

We used to do the same as you and donate our stuff to charity shops we rarely visited. Since march we've only visited the one and it is odd seeing your own stuff on the racks and realising it's better than the rest of the stock!
I love buying new books as gifts for friends but, like you, mine are always secondhand. I had to laugh at your husband staggering home with 47 books! You're right, even the wettest and most miserable day is more than tolerable with a good read! xxx

So pleased to be wishing you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Sunday Vix, you so deserve a nice weekend, blow the weather, it doesn’t matter as you are in the warm with the most important people in your life, Jon and those gorgeous fur boys. Once again a great post and the day will come when you can wear the sundress! Ivana’s pictures of you are so good, she’s very talented. My friend who lives in Smethwick phoned earlier and said they had a sprinkling of snow there this morning I told her they can keep it there and not send it to Brum. 20. Isn't Ivana talented? What an honour that she chose you as a subject for her sketches! The pinafore dress is gorgeous, and I can't wait to see you layering it for Winter. The 1960s Indian dress is an absolute stunner! I have a feeling I might see that on you very soon. We were debating whether to try and brave a charity shop next week, but I see you beat us to it. Great finds too, especially the patchwork bomber jacket and the Indian cotton blouse. I have yet to buy back one of my donations, though :-)

Your new dresses are really lovely, particularly the second one! Good you managed to find a few good things in the charity shop, even if one of them was your own book! Haha!
I need to ask you advice about houseplants- when you say you give them a soaking in the bath tub- do you pour water onto them, fill the bath and they suck it up over a few hours? We've brought in our lemon tree and Gardenia for the winter and they are hating the underfloor heating and dying!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Kezzie! December is great for good finds on Ebay, normal people are Xmas shopping and leave all the good things for me!
Yes, that's what i do. Fill the bath with a few inches of lukewarm water and let the plants have a slow drink for about 12 hours. Pouring water on the top of the plant pot often compacts the top of the soil and the water can't penetrate to the roots. I hope you can revive the lemon tree and gardenia. xxx
