The Distancing Diaries - 15th & 16th November, 2020

Sunday was a lazy day, an hour spent reading in bed, crumpets slathered in butter for breakfast and painting my nails (in Barry M's Rhubarb) in front of The Andrew Marr Show. I caught up with blog reading and didn't bother getting dressed until midday.

After a weekend break, work on the windows was due to resume on Monday. Despite Mark and Keith vacuuming and cleaning up after themselves the house is covered with a fine layer of dust but with just the architrave in the spare bedroom left to fit I thought I'd crack on with cleaning up, tackling the lounge (I'd done the bathroom, utility room & the kitchen the previous day).

The downstairs sash windows aren't being replaced. Jon will be applying window film in the next couple of weeks, a task he loathes but at least he won't have to worry about the upstairs windows this year. I cleaned the lounge windows in readiness, as I won't be able to get to them once the film is applied.

The rugs were swept & curtains beaten, generating clouds of dust, the surfaces were wiped clean and the vintage glass, along with the hearth, washed in hot soapy water. The chandelier and the picture rail was tickled with a feather duster, the cushions plumped and the floorboards were polished. I shall shut the door and wedge the draught excluder beneath it tomorrow to prevent any more dust from finding its way in there.

WEARING: Vintage Indian block printed kaftan (Olds Cool Traders), Greek slippers (Corfu, 2019), Lion's head belt (charity shop)

Jon popped out for bananas, tomatoes and a tin of salmon for Frank (he's a slave to those cats!)

After a break for noodles I combed some Lush conditioning treatment through the ends of my hair and risked life and limb climbing over the furniture piled up and hidden under dust sheets in the spare room to find out my exercise gear and a change of clothes ready for Monday morning.

I gave the bedroom a clean, that too can be closed up tomorrow so should stay relatively dust-free.

What of Jon and the lads? They've spent a large part of this weekend snoozing in front of the fire (the weather has been filthy) and watching crap TV.

Tea was a veggie curry with half a chilli nan. We spent the evening watching Spooks.

Monday morning started with a Wii Fit session followed by a mad rush to get the bathroom ready for the workers - a fresh towel, liquid hand soap, a new loo roll and some hand santiser - and a thorough clean of all the surfaces. Jon and I had just managed to get dressed and finish breakfast by the time they arrived.

We spent the morning in the lounge with Stephen (Frank went walkabout), I continued with my crochet. After our noodles Mark and Keith handed over the paperwork and said their goodbyes, the windows were fitted and looking fantastic.

You can't really see a difference but that's the point, we're replacing like for like not modernising (perish the thought!) The frames are hardwood and the architraves identical. You can really feel a difference when you go upstairs though, it's warm and, being double glazed there's no rattling or noise.

The frames have been primed but need painting. For once we have no suitable paint in our stash, so Jon's just placed an order online for white one coat gloss due for delivery later in the week. Taking of shopping online, I've ordered some more fairy lights as we both get such joy from the glow of the chillis in the kitchen.

Jon replaced the curtain rails and pushed the furniture back whilst I dusted, swept and mopped the spare room, the landing and the hallway.

We'd planned on taking a walk around the block but, just like the last three days, it had started raining so we made do with a cup of tea at the kitchen table instead. I'm itching to get outside, I've rescheduled our National Trust visit from Wednesday to Thursday as it looks like being the driest day of the week.

WEARING: Vintage wool housecoat (gift from G'n'T), 1970s suede waistcoat (birthday present from Liz)

Tea was a blue cheese topped vegeburger with olives, salad and plaka gigantes.

Stay safe and see you soon!

  1. So glad you replaced your windows with similar, now you can have it drier and quieter but the same look. What a big job that is. We are all slaves to our fur babies. Hubby had to put the umbrella over Buddy the other night in the yard just so he'd do his business as there was wind (70k gusts) and rain and Buddy was having none of it by himself :)

    1. We're so pleased with the result, the difference is astonishing! With no India on the cards we might as well invest in the house.
I can just picture your husband and Buddy sheltered under a brolly! Jon dries our cats with a bath towel if they come in wet! xxx

  2. So worthwhile all of the work that you have had done. The house is looking phenomenal. I love patchwork, distressed paint, old furniture, old paintings, and an olde worlde way of being. When I live on my own, as I do now, I only get my rubbish bins emptied for decency's sake, as I have such a miniscule amount of rubbish. What few bits of furntire I own, are second hand and I have some vintage chairs, antique wash stand, and antique card table. I love them. Your and Jon's Lockdown work has been so interesting, inside your home and out.

  3. I bet you're glad that's over and done with and I'm sure the double glazing will make all the difference. But oh, the dust! I still vividly remember what it was like when we got our kitchen windows replaced ... Sunday's block printed kaftan is gorgeous but I'm having a particular soft spot for today's vintage housecoat and suede waistcoat!
Aww, look at Frank and his catnip fish! And the things we do for cats! Prawns and now salmon: I know why Frank chose to live with you two! xxx

  4. The new windows are lovely and how warm you'll be! Our windows rattle dreadfully especially when it's windy and they let huge drafts in; but I'll never change them. I finally got OH to put window film on our living room and bedroom windows earlier this year - it only took 3 years!

Loved all your outfits especially the kaftan.

The weather has been pretty crappy here, too, but thank goodness for good books. I've got 'Lacuna' but haven't read it yet.

  5. Congratulations - it sounds like the windows have been (relatively) painfree so far, but I have yet to meet any work on any old house which does not generate Sahara-sized amounts of dust which seeps EVERYWHERE.

    On a completely different note - I covet your chandelier . . .

  6. I think I mentioned before that we had our windows redone in our condo a few years ago - you will notice a HUGE difference in your temperatures and sound. It's such a pain, but well worth it in the end.

I love your beautiful dresses, Vix! Both of them are lovely. That pic of Frank and his fish makes me happy - we spoil Vizzini too (a little bit of tuna water).

I hear you on the fairy lights! I bought 10 strings of them to redo my Christmas trees (I have 2), and I'm thinking I need to go get more. I really am craving that happy twinkle!

  11. I LOVE the nail colour for this week, it's gorgeous.

You will sleep so well with less noise and no draughts with new windows in the upstairs of the house. I used to quite enjoy putting the film on the windows ready for Winter when we lived in a rattling old flat on Barrow Island. We used to use the sort that you had to put in place with double sided sticky tape and then shrink with a hairdryer, it was very satisfying watching it get tauter and tauter.

i wish more people would be as careful with window replacements for their old houses - you can see many plastic(!) frames and incorrect designs around here....
anyway how careful one is - renovation in the house always makes for lots of dust - but the rooms are shiny again after your dedicated labour. it´s wonderful how your fab dresses sing with your interior.
i would have been snoozing away in front of the fire too ;-D

  13. Congratulations on completing Project New Windows before the worst of the winter winds! Having grown up in an old farmhouse whose 2nd floor Northwest bedroom was treated as a cold storage unit for bulk fruit*, I truly appreciate the draft-excluding, noise-reducing properties of modern wood-framed windows! Well worth the fuss and mess!

  17. Oh, I bet you'll be so pleased to have your house back to yourselves! No matter how lovely workmen are - it's still an intrusion - and I always feel compelled to do a Mrs Doyle with the cup of teas and biscuits lol. The boys will love sitting in the windows now, too!

Your house is beautiful and it just glows with colour. I wish I was as enthusiastic with the dusting and cleaning - you are an inspiration Vix! I know little and often is the way to go - and if I spy a grot spot - then it gets done. I do love a nice, fresh room and some fresh flowers.

I suppose renovation and freshening-up have been the one positive of lockdown. We've got rid of/swapped and repurposed so much over the last few months. We've even planned to do more of it in the Spring.

Are you NT visiting this week? Looking forward to reading all about it, if so.

  20. Wow, those windows are beautiful, it’s like our place you have certain rules to stick by and the paperwork let’s not mention that as the Japanese love erm paperwork for everything!! I remember when the tatami mats got replaced thoughout the place I thought it was going to be a nightmare, but they are so through with everything and they even put everything back in the correct place, I wondered why they were talking photos and pointing to different areas.
Shame that the mats were so bad that they fell appart when they were ripping them up. I felt for them then,
We weren’t allowed to stay on site and stayed local. I think it was a godsend for us. But yes the windows are wonderful. Paul found me some pineapple lights as I wouldn’t stop going on about yours and then I found some others hiding In the drawers. So now I’m a happy bunny.
I am in boring book land again, I started one but god it was doing my head In so I gave up!!! so I am going to try another one tonight. I hope you are all safe and well. Love and huggs allie

  24. Well done with the windows, Vix - they look amazing. So good that you've replaced them sensitively, to preserve the beauty of your gorgeous house. Unfortunately our windows were replaced with uPVC before we came here - not my favourite but they are double glazed and weather- and maintenance-proof at least! Your rooms all look so fabulous - I just love your style! Gorgeous clothes as always too. Our kitties are like yours in this weather and prefer snoozing on a warm lap to braving the elements outside.

Thank you for your visit and for your kind words about our dear bro - we shall miss him greatly. I am so glad you like my tiny carpet - new blog post today with #6 completed - now I've got to complete the project and make up the needle book. Also the clothes! I've pretty much run out of stuff to model for now but need to dig out a few more wintery things. This week I've added a bit more of our kitty history - we have had some characters in our time! You might be amused by the 2 videos.

Hope you are surviving Lockdown Mk 2.

    2. Thank you Vix! So glad you popped over for another visit and enjoyed seeing some of our previous kitties. Each one has been a little character in her own right! I must explore your previous posts and catch up with Albert. It is devastating when they leave us, isn't it... So glad you like the final carpet. Annie, one of the WOYWW members, makes miniature rooms and she is going to make up some of my designs to embellish them with. If you like dolls' houses, you'd love what she does! Just hop over here http://www.artyfartyannie.com/2020/09/woyww-587-wired-up.html and have a look. I've still got quite a bit of work to do to complete the project and make up the final needle book, and then I must tackle some other projects that have been hanging around for a while.

I agree that my new glasses are very similar to my old ones - someone commented that they are just more up to date, which is true. I've never wanted anything too dominant and when I tried on some bigger ones they looked awful on me! I am very pleased with them and after a couple of days, feel as if they've been part of my face for years. I just wish I could get the wretched cataracts sorted, though...

The Egypt cartoon is fun, isn't it. I particularly like the fact that the kitty is wrapped up like a mummy! The Egyptians loved their cats so much that they mummified thousands of them. It's just so awful that in the intervening centuries, cats haven't had much of a time. Thank goodness for the modern Crazy Cat Lady. I am definitely turning into one! Have you seen 1Bike1World on YouTube? It's the channel of a Scottish welder who is travelling the world, who picked up a stray kitten and they are travelling together. Nala is the most amazing cat - so feisty and brave, and sharing all his adventures, and they love each other so much! My hubby bought me the book recently and it's a delight.

      Off to "meet" Albert now!

      Hugs,
      Shoshi x

I love the block printed kaftan worn with a belt. Such a great look. The second styling, that gorgeous wool maxi dress/house coat paired with a suede waistcoat is fantastic as well. You just made me realize that I need to hunt my closet for some waistcoats.
It is easy to be enslaved by cats, they have some kind of superpowers, I'm sure. As they always say, cats have servants not masters. I miss the cats I fed on island Hvar and that seemed to accept us as their 'second' owners but at least I know they are alright because they belonged to our landlady and she takes good care of them. Still, I miss their meowing when I come out at the balcony. My neighbours cats here in Mostar seem all different or maybe I have just feeding strays since I came back, I'm not sure, I just feed whatever cats that come when I call and leave food out for them. :)
