The Distancing Diaries - 18th & 19th October, 2020

I was wide awake at 4.40am on Sunday morning so I got up, saw to the lads, staked a couple of houseplants and mopped the kitchen floor. I brought mugs of tea back to bed and finished A Man Called Ove (a wonderful read & highly recommended), getting up with Jon at 8am.

After a couple of slices of toast for breakfast I dyed my eyelashes and painted my nails Barry M's Night Sky. We watched The Andrew Marr Show then got dressed, grabbed the donation sack & our masks and headed out to the clearance charity shop.

WEARING: Vintage India Imports of Rhode Island block print maxi, Reiss wool felt fedora & 1970s suede jacket (all eBay finds)

It was chilly, the skies were grey and out came my blue suede jacket for the first time this season. I'm so glad I had the zip replaced at the little tailor's shop in town shortly before lockdown.

There was definitely a blue theme going on. Although I left the chazza empty handed, Jon found these incredible Jeffrey West navy blue boots. The style (O'Toole) is no longer available on the website but similar styles retail in excess of £500! I'm not surprised, they're gorgeous.

Back at home I cleaned the dining room window, took down the charity-shopped solar powered lights that usually hang from the curtain rail and replaced them with my Devil's Ivy that had got too long for the kitchen shelf. Jon hung the lights in the shelter where we thought they'd be more useful.

After noodles I gave the apple tree a radical pruning and tossed the clippings in the skip, narrowly missing Frank who'd decided it would make a nice bed. Jon researched printers as ours is on the blink (I tried to look the other day and started to lose the will to live).

I wrapped up the weekend's eBay sales, took a few more stock photos and drafted some listings ready to upload at a later date.

Tea was half a pizza with homemade jacket wedges along with a cheeky bottle of beer each. We caught up with Friday night's Gardener's World on the I-Player before another couple of episodes of Spooks.

After my early start I thought I'd be struggling to keep my eyes open but I managed to make a dent in my latest book when I went to bed at 10.30pm.

On Monday I was up at 6.30am. I saw to the lads and did my first Wii Fit workout of the week. I started to catch up with blog comments & wrapped up a couple more overnight eBay sales before Jon came down and joined me for breakfast. We'd run out of fruit so had a pot of instant apple and cinnamon porridge instead. We have a stash of these in the cupboard for when we trade at vintage fairs but as it's pretty unlikely we'll be taking our gear on the road for the foreseeable future we might as well eat them now. Jon did the post office run and a grocery shop while I got dressed and cracked on with photographing the rest of the women's tops in the Kinky Shed.

For someone who petitioned for the right to wear trousers when we started sixth form (our all-girls' school only allowed us to wear skirts & dresses until 1983) and got into trouble with the company directors for daring to wear a trouser suit to work back in the 1990s, these days I rarely wear them even though, after years of having to wear built-up shoes prior to my hip replacement (oh, the glamour!), my legs are now the same length.

I'm wearing a pair of 1990s-does-the-'70s devoré bellbottoms (courtesy of the lovely Suzanne Carillo, who sadly no longer blogs), the vintage Tarantella of Walsall suede waistcoat which goes with the skirt I wore last week (from our friends G&T), my toasty warm ex-Marks & Spencer Heatgen polo neck, a charity shopped felt hat & 1970s Indian silk screen printed scarf and a pair of silver boots I bought from La Redoute's 50% off flash sale four years ago.

After lunch, the rest of the homemade crumble with custard (we'll be looking like apples soon), I cropped my photos, measured the garments and saved the listings as drafts. Meanwhile, Jon arranged for the skip to be collected, taxed the works van on-line and spoke to the window company who hope to be able to start work in three weeks time.

Following Monty's advice, Jon (with Frank's help) staked the brassicas and I blitzed the stockroom, filling another sack ready to drop off at the charity shop next time we go.

Don't faint, I cooked the tea! A proper old school cauliflower and broccoli cheese with lashings of Henderson's Relish, which I'd never heard of until my friend, Allie Jane, mentioned having some shipped over to Japan as part of a care package. It's the northern version of Worcester sauce but anchovy free and therefore suitable for vegetarians & vegans.

Tonight it'll be more Spooks and the latest episode of Who Do You Think You Are? I can't be doing with David Walliams but I do love the programme.

Stay safe & see you soon!

  1. Your trouser outfit that you created, and Jon's shoes - fantastic. After my printer "went" I decided not to get another, even though they are really cheap. Now it's a mission to go and get stuff printed. But, if one is a writer - printers do so make life easier.

    1. Thanks so much! I feel very different in trousers, a bit more cheeky! Jon's shoes are incredible, aren't they?
Printers are such a pain, we need one for printing off pre-paid postage labels and in normal times, shop signage and insurance documents. xxx

  2. Wow-those were a shoe find for Jon. I bet you are a better cook than you give yourself credit for-or are you just implying Jon just takes that task on? I know you don't mix business with pleasure, but if you care to link to the you e-bay again. I'm trying to do a bit of research for future posts of my own to connect would be shoppers to would be sellers in ethical, resell, repurpose, or humanmade ways.

    1. I'm a professionally qualified chef and spent three years at catering collage. In a past life I ran restaurants and organised fine dining for politicians and royalty, I can cook but don't get any pleasure from it so I'm very lucky Jon does or we'd probably live on buttered toast!
In my side bar you'll find a photo of Jon and I standing outside our festival pitch, if you click on it it'll take you to the eBay shop. xxx

  3. The block print maxi dress looks amazing on you- as do all your fabulous maxi dresses. The outfit with cropped bellbottoms is absolutely fabulous. Wonderful turtleneck and vest as well. Fun to see you wearing trousers. I mix and match these days but I remember that as a girl I would only wear skirts or dresses...and that is funny because I was such a tomboy- something people find hard to believe now. The Man called Ove sounds like a great book, I remember reading good reviews on it. The Wild Thyme in Ibiza sounds interesting too.
    The tea looks very tasty!

    1. Thanks, Ivana! The blue maxi is a firm favourite, I wear it all year round. I was delighted to find a warm jacket to make it winter-proof!
I was a real tomboy as a child, too.
A Man Called Ove was a really wonderful read, I rarely cry but I did with this! xxx

  5. I love the trousers outfit - you look fabulous! I read of Henderson's Relish on the Skint Foodie blog (he no longer blogs, unfortunately, it was terrific). I looked round all the shops and couldn't find it until I did! Home Bargains sells it pretty cheaply. I am really enjoying Spooks but have found I can't watch it too near bedtime as I get a bit fraught worrying about the spooks! Jon's boots look amazing, what a bargain, I am a real fan of navy. Must be my inner Jean Muir!

Isn't it a shame when people stop blogging? They're part of our lives and suddenly they're gone. Home Bargains! I haven't been in there since before lockdown but we always used to get some great food bits from there, I'll bear that in mind next time we venture into Walsall.
Those Spooks really put us through it, I hate it when they leave (just watched Zoe's exit last night!)
Inner Jean Muir indeed, you are classy! xxx

  6. Love the shoes, sorry the thrift gave you no love today though. That book looks good, I've only just begun reading again as the brain is able to once again, thankfully. I've had to start downloading them but that's ok, I am getting used to reading on the kindle now although much prefer a real book. I've never watched Spooks, will have to look out for that.

You'd love Spooks, a proper quality drama with some amazing actors.
I remember post hip replacement I couldn't get to grips with reading, I blame the Tramadol. I'm glad you're able to enjoy a book again, it's the best way to relax. xxx

fab looks in blue and in black trousers - can´t believe that you had to fight for in 1983 or got trouble because in 1990.... here in eastern germany one was and is still a curiosity in a skirt or dress since the mid 70s.......
the blue shoes are cool, looking brandnew - and the price!!

How strange about you growing up in trousers. They were still seen as rather daring in the 1980s! xxx

It’s a bit like when she goes up to her static in Berwick she comes back with tonnes of fentermans pop, it’s adult pop, but she loves it, she loves it even more when she gets it 4 for a pound out of heron frozen foods!!! She’s a gem me old mum.
I love those boots very Whitby gothic!! I have an old pair of swear rave boots that I bought back in the early y2K, they are still hanging on there!!! I just love them even if my feet don’t . I am having a lot of hit and miss lately with books so I have asked my mum just to look out for crime ones . I tried to read the confessions of max tivoli but I just couldn’t get into it. So it is in my sell pile! Love the flares I am far to short to wear flares. Paul says I look like a gnome with no legs but a loveable one !!! Men !!! anyway keep safe and love and hugs

I had some of those Swear boots, too.
I love crime and thriller books but some are awful, aren't they? The best are usually the Scandi ones but, I love Ian Rankin's Rebus series - tell your mum to keep her eyes peeled in the chazzas! Loads of love to you. xxx

  11. You have some lovely suede, I wish we had a good local tailor that I knew of, it would have been a real shame if your jacket hadn't been repairable.
It sounds like you had a rough time with your hip, apart from the pain, as a shoe lover it must have been difficult to wear what you wanted, you always wear such fab shoes and boots.
I've never heard of Hendersons, and I call myself a northerner!
    Have a good day. xxx

    1. I love suede, the older and tattier the better! The replacement zip only cost £15 which I thought was an absolute bargain, he even had a stock of vintage zips so the jacket could stay authentic.
Built-up shoes weren't the greatest, most of the time I'd stick a foam wedge in my 6" heeled boots and just get on with it, much to the horror of my orthopedic surgeon!
Fancy you not knowing about Henderson's either. Jon bought ours from Morrison's but Catmac commented that Home Bargains often stock it. xxx

I was very shocked to learn you cooked the tea - whatever brought that on? Lol! I wish I didn't have to cook; I hate it. When OH retires he can do the cooking everyday!

Those La Redoute boots are absurdly comfy. I can't believe they're still looking shiny and unblemished, I used to wear them for 16 days at fairs!
You should definitely hand over the cooking duties to OH, I'm so glad Jon likes spending time in the kitchen. My mashed potato has been requested tonight (he's doing the rest), twice in a week, it's becoming a habit!
I really enjoyed David Walliams', too. The poor chap in the lunatic asylum. There was a nursing home round the corner from me when I was a child and I remember meeting a couple elderly men who'd suffered with shell shock, fifty years on and they were still affected. xxx

  17. Loving Sunday's blue-themed outfit - that blue suede jacket is gorgeous - and how lucky Jon was to find those incredible boots! Poor Frank though, that must have been a rude awakening! We're in need of a new printer too - we usually ask Jos's son to do the research, technical nit-wits as we are. As our current one includes a scanner, and that is still working, so for now, I'm using the printer at the office if needed. Those devoré bellbottoms - isn't it sad Suzanne no longer blogs! - are totally fabulous on you and make you look quite tall. I never had problems with wearing trousers - no uniform at my school, and work has always had a relaxed policy - but I remember having to go out and buy a skirt especially for oral exams when I was at teacher training college. There was one particular guy who insisted all girls wore skirts! And now I suddenly have a craving for cauliflower cheese! xxx

How lovely to have a techie person in the family! Jon and I are hopeless and get so distracted with all that kind of stuff.
I've got long legs and a short body, I tend to wear empire line dresses or loose things belted as anything with a natural waist sits in a really strange place!
No uniform at school? Was that common in Belgium? I've noticed that Greek children don't wear uniforms either. xxx

  18. Two stunning looks on you here, Vix! I love that jacket with the furry cuffs, your posh blue nails, and that floppy fedora. Jon's new shoes remind me VERY much of Fluevogs! L has a similar pair of shoes with a similar toe design. I am in total ABBA-love with your second outfit - those flares! I bet they swoosh well. I miss Suzanne's blog! She has such great style and it was so fun to meet her years ago.

Silly Frank, sleeping in the bin. I've set up Vizzini with a hot water bottle, as he feels the damp cold here that's starting to set in. My knuckles are starting to hurt - the worst part of winter!

Cheers to you and I'll take some of that lovely-looking cauliflower/broccoli tea - looks delish!

Abba! Next time I'll have to wear those bells with my purple platforms and Mum's gold skull cap.

In her younger days she had been a cook at the Grand Hotel in Brum, I so miss my Bilston and West Brom trips for a good mooch, charity shop and market bargains, but we just need to “keep the faith” that life as we know it will all come back one day. “Not my Hubby” was born up country amongst the dark Satanic mills but had never heard of Hendersons sauce till very recently, now he’s getting through the stuff by the bottle Keep Safe ma Wench. And yes, I can remember those times when a woman was supposed to wear skirts to look 'professional' (so ridiculous). I still like trousers, but it's so difficult to find any appealing pair of them, that I'm wearing more and more skirts and dresses, it's so much easier!
Your fabulousness almost made me stop missing summery clothes and fabrics!
