Cats In Space

What's this, a non-festival related post in the middle of August? That'll be because we don't need to be at our next destination until tomorrow morning (leaving home at the ungodly hour of 4am).

The stock's packed and Gilbert's had a wash....we're ready for action!

Although the early start isn't much fun, we've had a whole four days at home, plenty of time to unpack from Lakefest, repack, shop for stock, launder and price it all and, something I haven't done in an absolute age, make something!

This skirt was a duvet cover and pillow case when I got my paws on it yesterday. It originally sold in Asda (or Walmart to my non-Brit friends) but I found it in a charity shop for a quid. as I've mentioned before, I'm a fussy sod when it comes to bedding, the quality of this poly-cotton set isn't great and the print is only on one side (how cheap is that?) I wouldn't want it on my bed but as a fun skirt? Hell, yes!

To make the skirt I used my trusty vintage 1972 Style pattern 4148. At this time of year my head is so full of what I need to do for the next festival that I find it nigh-on impossible to switch off, spending a couple of hours cutting fabric and sewing it together is better than meditating. The sequinned boob tube I'm wearing was lurking in the 50p underwear basket - always a source of riches!

Talking of cats, here's the lads, happy to hang around with us in the garden when we got back from Lakefest last Monday.

Stephen Squirrel is the boss, he's 13 and as mad now as when we were given him at two months old.  He dashes about like a horse, trips up over his own feet and never stops talking. He bullies any cat that dares venture into the garden except for Frank who he keeps in line with the odd slap across the arse. He looks remarkably like Sheila's boy, Vizzini.

We discovered Frank the Tank living in a box in the garden a couple of summers ago, he was terrified of everything. The day after we lost our beautiful Polly Piglet he moved in and never left. At first he didn't know how to climb stairs, purr or play - he was litter trained but neither neutered or chipped. The vet reckons he's about four years old. He rarely leaves Jon's side and considering the size of him, has the most pitiful babyish meow. His favourite toy is a cat nip banana.

Right, enough of the social stuff, I've got to sort out my outfits for the weekend. The forecast looks quite promising so keep your fingers crossed, we haven't had a great track record for weather lately!

See you soon!

  1. Don't you look lovely with your spaced out cats. And I mean that in all ways possible. Sewing as meditation. Now there's a thought to keep in mind when the going gets rough/tough. I say, I do believe I have a dress the exact color of your nail polish!

  6. Oh, look at those lovely boys! Your Stephen Squirrel is definitely a long-distance sibling of Vizzini! What a handsome boy. Frank the Tank is just such a fluff-monster. He's gorgeous and I just want to rub his tum. :) /cattalk

LOVE the skirt - definitely not deserving to be bed linens, but YES to this fabulous look! I would totally wear that (maybe not the boobtube, since my boobs would be hangin' down around my waist!).

Have a lovely weekend, and good luck with the early start! Zoiks, 4am is an ungodly hour.

  7. You're definitely the queen of the duvet cover maxi skirts! The space cats are such a fun print. Lovely to see your two real life monsters too! Stephen Squirrel does indeed look like he's the boss, while Frank the Tank looks like butter wouldn't melt. Phoebe does have quite a babyish meow as well. She was a bit of an outcast as well, so maybe they just didn't learn how to meow properly! Hoping for good weather and a brisk trade at the Classic Car Boot! xxx

  14. I love that space cat skirt! I'd have to buy that duvet cover to make something too, I recently bought an ancient Egyptian themed duvet cover in an op shop to make into a skirt (and it was only printed on one side too!

  20. The cat print skirt you made is amazing. So cool you made it from a dovet. You're so creative. I can see why you don't want it on your bed (since it's polyester) but it looks great as a skirt. I really like this outfit. Fantastic cat photography as well.

  23. Asda duvets do seem to be popular for the home seamstress, I have seen a few made into dresses, because the prints are so outlandish. Space cats beats them all, obviously!! That's a great tip about using sewing to zone out and give a busy brain a rest, I might have to try that, I have been saying I haven't got time for it but sometimes my brain feels like it's going to explode with this PhD malarkey! Xx

  24. The lads are gorgeous! I'm missing having a cat around the place but it's just not practical in summer, hoping to foster another moggy next month.
Hope you didn't get rained on at the weekend, we had slight drizzle in Sussex. xxx

  25. Gorgeous cats, I love the story of how Frank the Tank came to join the family. I had a cat called Polly many years ago, she was a tortoise shell and white and I called her Polly Picatso - she looked just like a she'd been painted. She was run over when she was just one year old and that night a massive Burmese hopped through the cat flap into the house, how do they know?? I love the photos of your cat pals playing so happily.
Wow, the skirt is art in itself, I love the originality, it looks fab. xxx

  26. mwahah, cats in space is a great title, really appealing to anybody! Glad that you revamped that cheap duvet cover in something fabulous! I have to remember to have a look at this kind of things when rummaging in charities! you're so wise!
And it's lovely to met those handsome boys who live around you!, they're cute!

  27. The Cats in Space is the best skirt!!! Love the pattern, and you picked the purrfect design! And I enjoyed the stories of your kitties with wonderful photos!!!

  28. Awwww, your kitties are so handsome! I have a special place in my heart for Frank, who came into your lives at the perfect time.

I have a bed sheet I found at a thrift store that is in pristine condition with a cartoon cat print, and I've been wanting to make something out of it for ages. It's not nearly as cool as your "Space Cat" skirt though.

  29. Ha, the cat duvet is MUCh better in skirt form! Looks super glam with the sequins! I love your two cats! I found a Scion Living pillow case in the chazza yesterday for £1- I really wanted a Scion living duvet set so i just bought the random pillowcase!

  30. That skirt is excellent! And those duvets were in the shops (I think) earlier this year, so someone clearly didn't have it very long. I don't know if I'd want it on a bed but it's fabulous as clothing.

Your cats are fab. I love Frank's little fangs in his last photo. Cats are the best! He may only have a tiny voice because he was a street cat; apparently ferals are often very quiet because they learn not to make much sound as kittens. Mine have silly little voices too.

  31. I bloody love that skirt!! And nice to have an intro to your feline fellas. My cats follow me around when I've been away for a few days. It's lovely. I currently have a sat asleep between my arms on the desk, it's making typing a little slow, but it's worth it :)
