Ain't Going To Goa...Yet!

Today is sunglasses and big coat weather, which I like...
....but nowhere near as much as I like sunglasses and no coat weather.

10 months ago today, Benaulim beach at sunset. My recycled sari dress came from the 99 rupee shop in the village (99 rps was equal to £1 at the beginning of the year, not so now, bloody Brexit!)

Fed up with being told to buy nothing on Black Friday I went and booked a couple of flights to Goa. While I agree with not spending for the sake of it, I loathe being told what to do. I'm such a middle-aged rebel. I'm flicking my pigtails in defiance.

Sunshine or not, after yesterday's 17 hour day sunglasses were a necessity this morning. While Camden was no record breaker trade-wise we took as much as we normally do at the locally-based vintage fair we turned down in London's favour. Although the alternative was only twenty minutes down the road and the pitch fee was the same, there's acts doing covers of songs from the 1940s & 1950s and a large proportion of visitors who delight in telling you that their Nan/mum/auntie used to have one of those.

Life's too short to spend doing fairs that feel like a chore. We opted for a six hour commute, sung along to 1980s dance music and hung out with people with a genuine understanding of vintage like our friends Fiona, Melanie and Ray.

I'm wearing a 1970s lurex catsuit (bought from a jumble sale in 2011 for 20p), silver Chelsea boots and a 1960s chain belt from my friend Eileen (who blogs here)

We even got presents! Melanie & Ray give us some vintage china, scarves, jewellery, Alan McGee's book, vintage velvet curtains, a Kangol velvet beret and a sparkly purse as well as some The Face magazines from the early 1980s. (And you don't need to tell me that you used to have some of those, we all did!)

Despite being half dead this morning we wrapped up and walked into town to blow away the cobwebs.  There's something wonderfully subversive about standing at the checkout with a basket of sun tan lotion when everyone else is loaded down with wrapping paper, celebrity perfume and naff gift packs. We're not going for weeks but I'm buggered if I'm venturing into mainstream retail shops any closer to Xmas.

Check me out - I'm not wearing Barry M lipstick. This is Flaunt It from Sleek. I bought it when Superdrug had a three for two offer on make-up. (Don't worry, the other two purchases were Barry M!) I've been looking for a cruelty-free true orange lipstick most of my adult life, I think this is the one.

WEARING: 1960s vinyl & fake fur coat (£1, clearance charity shop), Vintage psychedelic maxi (swapped with another trader at a fair last year), 1960s Clarks' Fireflies gold pumps (nicked from the stockroom), Primeta, West German sunglasses (20p, car boot sale)

This week we've got Frank's pom-pom removal, a massive demonstration against council cuts, an art gallery preview and preparation for our last vintage fair of the year (HERE) but all that can wait. Tonight is pizza, booze, a roaring log fire and the latest BBC Scandi-Noir on catch-up.

See you soon!

  1. Whoa, I love, love your Black Friday purchase of tickets to Goa! (we bought tickets for Christmas in New York City that day too!). Looking fabulous as always, love your braids and everything else. xox

It's getting loads of likes on my FB page (http://tinyurl.com/h8ds6jc)! Have a great market season and holiday when that finally comes, and hope to see you next year! xxx

  3. I shop when it works, and stop when it works, though I get that some folks like the reverse peer pressure to hold tight to their funds instead of senselessly following the masses to buy stuff they don't really want, and certainly don;t need. What's not to love about your gifts from your friends. I'm looking for beady/fringey type curtains for my daughters closet. The doors are shot and she wants something fun. The picture of curtains plus beady necklace reminded me that I need to keep looking for her, and pop into the thrift store later to take a peak.

    2. Charity shops are the best places to be when the Xmas shopping insanity kicks off. I bet you'll soon find the curtains of your daughter's dreams.
I'm all for people buying something at a bargain price if they need it, it's utter madness to buy something just because it's been reduced like the chap interviewed on the BBC - buying two massive TV solely because they were half price! x

  6. Dare I say it, you look pretty festive in all that red, Vix! I particularly love that coat, I had a similar style in the 70's but purple check in colour, bloody loved it! The retail madness has started here as well, and like you, I'm now trying to avoid 'proper' shops until at least mid January!

  7. No Black Friday madness for me, thanks.

I enjoy festivities (too much booze and food is always a winner around my place) but buying someone a gift that fulfills an obligation without an ounce of thought put into the person it is purchased for seems awfully sad-so I don't do it. I can be generous without being told I *must*.

You know I love that red coat of yours, and the braids are a great look. Isn't orange lippy the best? It'll get plenty of use when you come back with a suntan.

Xmas for some people seems like a terrible time of obligation and keeping everyone happy at the expense of their own sanity. I intend to ignore it as much as I possibly can.
I love orange lippy. My next quest is the perfect poison green eye shadow, it seems to be evading me. xxx

  8. How exciting that Goa is beckoning you and you've got your tickets - yay!

I, too, refused to enter into the Black Friday nonsense. I spent a £1.00 on a pair of cords in the British Red Cross shop and £1.50 on a double cotton bed sheet.

I love your coat and maxi and silver pumps are just what you need when it's frickin freezing out there.

Good luck to Frank - it's a good job he doesn't know what you've got in store for him. I reckon he'd up and move in with somebody else!

Modus is knicker gripping - we caught up with it last night and were hooked from the beginning.

    Have a great week

And those oversized sunnies would be just the thing for scaling Everest -- but you'd need to wear boots, don't you think? I've been gadding about a lot and haven't seen Modus yet - is it any good? I need to catch up with the new Poliakoff thing too.

Modus was creepy and terrifying, just what the doctor ordered. 10 Rillington Place is worth a watch, too.
The trouble with having live acts at vintage fairs is that majority of people who go the see them aren't interested in buying. I've had people toss their coats over our rails so they can have a dance unencumbered or, even worse, a doting mother set up a video camera on a tripod in the middle of her pitch so she can film the entire performance of her Elvis impersonator son! x

I know I'll never wear it again, (I'm sure they've all shrunk) There were 5 70s Laura Ashley dresses, and many of my 1980s business suits (think Dynasty. lol) Boy, did we really wear shoulder pads that wide. I've still got loads more to sort through. I had a phase of buying 'Jungle' outfits. My dear husband whom I hadn't met then, had a real good laugh at all the lace, suede, leather and animal prints. I have kept one dress that was a real favourite. It is black velvet, with a boned bodice, and pleated deep blue frills across the skirt. Is it my imagination, or have sizes changed? I couldn't believe the label said size 14. The waist is absolutely tiny, and there is no way it would fit me now, and yet, I still happily wear today's size 14. Hey Ho Such is life. Back to my overflowing closets. Blessings

Those 1980s jungle outfits! My Mum adored those. There used to be a shop in Birmingham called Ibiza and it was all chamois leather, leopard print and jeweled embellishments. 42. Hi again, I've got several (read that as too many) capes, everything from a beautiful black velvet 'opera cape' to an enormous black, scarlet lined full length 'Dracula, cape. I particularly enjoy wearing that if I'm visiting anyone in hospital. The looks I get as I sweep majestically (all 4'11'' of me) along the corridors, make me giggle because I have a very dark sense of humour. anyway, to the point. At the moment we have surveyors an builders in and I'm having to face the task of culling my clothes. (Enough to clothe an army, even though they would be a very weird looking army...a cross between the characters in a Jane Austen novel, and the cast of Buffy....boy, that should scare the enemy!) Back to the point, I found a floor length, hooded cape. It has a beautiful silk lining but the outer colour is brown. and me and brown do not get along. After seeing your patchwork curtains, skirts etc, I realised I could turn it into a wonderful (?) garment if I covered it with hand embroidered blocks of velvet and lace. I realise this would probably take years, but what a wonderful shroud it won't make! It's being so cheerful wot keeps me going!

  43. Love this catsuit on you, the red coat and two braids! The trip to India sounds like a sip of fresh air. And I didn't have any of that stuff! :)

  44. I was wondering when you were going to get your tickets! Now that's taken care of you can look forward to your winter escape. You are rocking those pigtails!

I LOVE The FACE magazine - I was working in record stores in the 1980's and we would get copies imported from the UK to sell in the store. I may still have one with Annie Lennox on the cover somewhere. The clothing was always fabulous.

  45. We don't participate in Black Friday in our house. Why deal with the madness of a item (which the store has a limited supply of anyway?) that is on "sale," when you can wait it gets marked down at the end of the year? My belief is, if it is not within your budget when it first comes out, wait till it goes on sell at a reasonable price and get it. My mom raised my sisters and I to look at the price tag first, if it's on sell, if you absolutely need it, and if you have the cash for it, get it. Mom always told us to pay in cash on items we want and not put anything on credit or write a check for it. But she also told us, that with every item we bought, we need to remove any clothing or shoes from our closets that we no longer wear or fit into any longer, because there is someone who may need it.

    1. Too right! If you really need/want it you'll pay fill price for it and save until you can afford it. I can't understand people buying just because it's reduced. When I've helped friends declutter it's always the impulse buys that get donated to charity unworn and unused.
Black Friday is a new thing over here but we've had Boxing Day sales for years. People queuing all night for designer handbags and perfume. Don't they get enough tat at Xmas? xxx

It always makes me (literally) dance for joy!I feel so happy about your lipstick - you always feel like you have won at life when you find something like that. Looks like a fab fair catching up with wonderful friends and some treasures as well :D
