Lunch Date - What I Wore For Wetherspoons

Victorian, Psychedelic, Indian, Native American, Handmade, Charity Shop, Vintage, African, Birkenstocks, Topknot, Car Boot Sale, Turquoise.....if I did Instagram I'd have worn out the hashtag button.

I'm dressed for lunch in Walsall's Wetherspoons. Other than a couple of evenings out socialising and some charity shopping the past week has been mainly spent scratting around the garden in a frayed vintage sundress with my hair in a ratty bun. Sitting on the door step yesterday morning with the sun on my shoulders, feet bare & filthy, soil under my fingernails sowing coriander seeds in a salvaged chimney pot I couldn't have been more content. Not that I've got any desire to chuck it all in and live off grid in the countryside any time soon, I'd go mad if I didn't live within walking distance of charity shops, the pub and people.

Anyway, back to the clothes and there's pretty much nothing here you haven't seen before. A skirt I made from a 1960s screen printed curtain from a jumble sale, a charity-shopped antique Horrockses camisole, a traditional Ghanaian leather-bound basket bought from last years' Kaya Festival and a pair of vintage Italian sunglasses the car boot stallholder considered so ridiculous that she only wanted 20p for them.

The shorter of my two turquoise pendants is Native American, hand made in Canada. Along with the copper cuff, engraved with the same design, it was a gift from an old boyfriend to my Mum in the early 1960s after he'd spent a year or so travelling the world. I bought the other pendant for £2 from Age UK last week, the manager had hidden it away under the counter until she next saw me, knowing that I'd love it.

After hobbling around for ages I finally bit the bullet and treated myself to a brand new pair of silver Birkenstocks. I'm not really sure what took me so long. In the year leading up to my first hip replacement I rarely wore anything else although, ten years ago I had to have the left shoe built up at the hospital as my leg was so much shorter than my right (oh, the glamour!)  Being sensible has definitely paid off, I haven't had a twinge of pain in weeks and the orthopaedic surgeon is happy to put off surgery until next year. Hooray!

I was going to post this yesterday but what started out as a lunch date ended up with us staggering out of 'Spoons at 11pm. Today I'm back to the ratty bun and frayed sundress, there's a weed-strewn border and a packet of rocket that won't plant itself.

See you soon!

  1. Loving the camisole and the necklace , I'me glad its not only me that gets dirty feet in the garden , Although if i amd going in there for a long time now i wear socks lol , I have found out that heels give me hip pain but its not as bad as yours so sometimes i wear them but what i have found is a wedge does not may bee because your whole foot is supported by the wedge , It might be worth a try xxx

    1. Thank you! I love wedges but my feet are quite narrow so even if the buckles are done up on the tightest hole my feet slip and slide forward and end up giving me blisters. Can't win, can I? xxx

  2. Those are the most glamorous Birkenstocks I've ever seen! Such an upgrade from the usual rough-tanned skins, battered buckle, dirty toenails (ah, the Barry M coordinates with the turquoise pendants) and unmatched socks ensembles worn by local off griders. Very glad, indeed, they're good for the hip!

I still love the mod print on that skirt & want to do it in tapestry for a set of throw pillows!
Glad those Birkies helped your hip & look glam to boot!

Those necklaces look spectacular worn together, and the camisole is just lovely. (And I'm jolly glad it's not just me who bumbles ratarsed out of pubs :-D )

The Horrockses camisole is lovely and crisp and the perfect backdrop for those amazing turquoise pendants. I bet you are looking glamorous even when wearing a frayed sundress and a ratty bun, though. xxxx

  18. Gorgeous Birkenstocks. They really are so comfy aren't they? I have got to second the vote for a small wedge heel. They really make a difference to my dodgy back, flats kill me after a day or so. That is fabulous news about your hip, although my Mum was up walking the same day she had hers done and says that it is the best thing that ever happened to her. Pity they wear out so quickly. I love your outfit. That maxi skirt is an absolute belter. The colours are gorgeous. That is such a lovely tale about your beautiful boho jewellery. I love the camisole, it's perfect with the groovy maxi and the turquoise jewellery. Birkenstocks are lovely but I couldn't wear them with my hideous bunions! I hear they are de rigueur at festivals? 28. That's great news about your hip-and that has to be the best looking pair of Birks, ever.

It sounds like you're putting the time off to excellent use. Isn't that the best when shopkeepers know your taste and hold things for you? It says something about their sales skills, but it also says that they buyer is the sort of person they like enough to hold things for. And no wonder they like you-who wouldn't?!

Gardening is good for the soul don't you think? it's such therapy and you can get engrossed for hours in the process whether you have an acre or a few pots to play with! 30. Oh, you pretty thing! The turquoise and silver necklaces are spectacular. Those are the Birkenstocks I would wear if I could wear Birks, but they are not designed for people who have bunions.

  33. Cor, that's quite a result, getting that op put off. I really thought it was imminent. Does that mean you can get on with your travel plans, or are you still being sensible? I've never actually worn a pair of Birkenstocks but I reckon I could be tempted by a silver pair if needs be. As always you look lovely. I'm always partial to a little white camisole and those pendants are beautiful. Ooh a Wetherspoons session, what a good idea. Thank you for the show recommendation! I haven't heard of it, but it reminded me of another British show from the 1980s I think, about a similar topic. Can't remember the name, but it was based on a book, and I loved it. I looked up Indian Summers, and it's available on Amazon!

I'm sorry to hear that you've got foot issue, too - it's not fun at all. Silver stops those Birkis looking too orthopaedic, doesn't it? I was tempted with Salt Water sandals but I have trouble fastening buckles when my arthritis is playing up, easy to kick the ones I'm wearing off without having to sit on the floor struggling. xxx

  38. As a lover of turquoise and silver, well, you've got my attention! Lots of bangles, I've said it before, I love your style, such a fan of yours. In my part of the world, every second person wears Birkis in the summer (because it's so often very wet and even when it's not, it's a general thing that footwear is left outside and Birkis fit the bill there). I bought some shiny dark blue ones last year and would love some silver ones for evening - yes, we wear them all the time and everywhere!
