Tie Dye, Pompoms and a Moan

These Indian leather chappals were on sale at a jumble sale I went to recently.
"Euggghhh....look at them, they're bloody foreign!" said the woman in a Primark tee shirt & obscenely thin leggings to her partner, dressed in head to toe Nike, throwing them down in disgust. I felt like pointing out that everything they were wearing probably got made in an Asian sweatshop but held my tongue, grabbed them and handed over my 40p.

Everything I'm wearing is bloody foreign - from the 1970s Carol Classics of New Zealand beach dress (from Op Shop Mama), the velvet Pakistani tote bag (a jumble sale years ago), the Nepali pendant (courtesy of Heather in California) to the earrings I bought from Colaba Causeway in Mumbai.

My tie dyed shrug started life as a tablecloth I found at another jumble sale. I tried to do a tutorial but you'll find a far better one over at Krista's.

The turquoise pompom trim was 50p a metre from the Indian haberdashery stall on the market 'cos everything's better with pompoms.

Is it just me or is the type of ignorance displayed by the jumble sale couple steadily on the rise? A trip into town coupled with the behaviour of many of last weekend's campers show a general lack of intelligence or respect for anybody else. Feeding tiny children tubes of Pringles & fizzy pop for breakfast, throwing litter, pissing wherever they fancy, thinking its acceptable to tell another woman she's got great tits in front of their wife, spitting, drunkenness before 9am. Poor Liz's cat, Disco, even got shot by an air rifle last night. God help us if this is an example of the Core British Values the government are proposing our schools teach.

Anyway, moan over. We've stock to buy, a vintage fair in Derby on Saturday to prepare for, a house that looks like an explosion in Oxfam and I really ought to crack on with some sewing before the rest of Blogland utterly put me to shame.

Barry M nail paint - made in the UK!

But stuff that, we're pushing the boat out and having a curry from Nessa's for tea tonight. I don't know what day of the week it is any more so I'm treating today as a Friday - Cuban rum & coke, an Indian vegetable Karahi with extra green chillies and catching up with Wallander, a Scandinavian detective series with subtitles. My life would be a whole lot duller without bloody foreign stuff.

See you soon!

  1. Brilliant post, Vix, that tablecloth shrug is a masterpiece!

I have to say, it depresses me to hear the things that come out of peoples mouths on a daily basis; those chappals are much lovelier than any high street shoes I've seen, and for 40p! what a bargain. My friend overheard a large lady the other day in Macdonalds saying it's down to them that she's fat as burgers cost £1 whilst a salad is £4! Like macdonalds is the only place she could eat! depressing! I went to Primavera festival last weekend in Barcelona and the atmosphere was so lovely, everyone drinking and dancing but having a great time, no fighting or lewd behaviour from laddish types....pity you can't say the same for a night out in the UK!

Hope you're doing well! sorry I haven't commented in a while, I always read your blog and love your posts. I am on the lookout for a pair of vintage heart shaped sunnies by the way, if you should see any on your travels please think of me! I'll buy them from you!

    Much love xxxxxxx

  3. my life is only richer due to "foreign stuff", lol, heck I'm Canadian,
everything is foreign to me, !!!!
I love the tie dye shawl you made, I wish I had kept my tie dye stuff, I still remember wrapping elastic bands around the marbles placed in my tee shirts then dipped in dye, then cutting sleeves, fraying and generally demolishing the boring tee's in to wonderful fun mini dresses, the tees I'm sure came from somewhere very far away, India most likely, your supper sounds very good,

  4. I agree my dear but there always were a huge percentage of tossers out there. Back in the 60s a local yob went to beat up a 'queer'. No surprise when he went to prison for violence against vulnerable people some years later.

You and Jon are open minded, kind and caring as are your followers. Still the majority but it is grim to come face to face with that minority.

My mother was one of those people and then my daughter had a long term relationship with a Nigerian guy before coming out as gay. My mother went through the crisis and came out the other end way more open minded. Funny old life!

  6. What a clever use of a tablecloth! It's so neat and looks very good with your lovely 'foreign' outfit. I would have bought those lovely shoes too! I am totally with you where that type of ignorance is concerned. It has been forecasted that white people will be the visible minority here Toronto within 20 years, and I am completely comfortable with that. The diversity is why I love living here.

  7. I love the sandals!!! I was searching high and low for a similar pair and could find nothing... Finally caved and just bought some new ones :(
That sucks about all the ignorance and rudeness you've come across. Sometimes I forget how shitty people can be because I surround myself with such awesome friends!

  8. Well, let's do the positive stuff first - you look bloody gorgeous! I love that frock from Linda, I always have a pang of bag envy at the sight of that velvety beauty, and your new shoes and shrug are fabulous. And your plans for the evening sound perfect!
It can be horribly depressing to witness the behaviour and shitty attitudes of some people, can't it? I think there are folk around who aren't very bright, don't think about what they are saying, don't much care about anyone else, and mistakenly believe they can do exactly what they want, at any given time. Horrible. Gives us humans a bad name. Hatred of anything "other" is just part of that miserable, stupid mindset.
Still, I'm pleased to say I know an awful lot of people who are reasonable, thoughtful, bright and generous, who behave well and are a joy to be with. You're one of them, darling!
    Moan away, I hear ya.
    Hope Disco is OK.
    Love you! xxx

  9. Well, that was a moan worth having. So much rudeness and parochialism! Love your new wrap, and I will have to try one too. What happened to the kitty? Ignorant asshole, to shoot at a cat. xox

  10. Oh , they're just lovely , those foreign sandals , I'm also hoping to find some one day !
Well Vix , if this can comfort you : here in Belgium there's often a lack of respect as well , yelling at night , insults when one has an original look , throwing garbage into nature and so on ...
Respect for every aspect of Life should be taugt at an early age ...
Love this post and your golden flower dress too !

  11. It is depressing that something different is undesirable or frightening to some people. And as you mention, also sad that so much stuff comes from sweatshops. I always think of it when I watch fashion segments on daytime TV when they go on about how cheap/a bargain something from the high street is and I am shouting at the TV , "Why don't you think about why it is so cheap??!!"

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm not sure exactly what an air rifle is but it doesn't sound good. I really hope Liz's cat is ok. :(

Yes, what an ignorant and disrespectful comment for that woman to make. As if her cheap and awful outfit was hand-loomed by nymphs in her backyard.

I love everything about your foreign outfit! Xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gee some people really are appalling and revolting. Oh well what can you do they often are going to change but at least we can carry on with our broader and more open perspective on life. My life is full of the foreign too, much of what others laugh at, at times. As always you look amazing and you've utterly inspired some sewing and transformation to a round tablecloth I have. Heck I won't even need to trim it because it's already fringed.

  14. Hey Vix

You look lovely as ever in yer bloody foreign stuff. I love the shoes.

I know what you mean about people idiots most of them ignorant to anything different. We don't have much to do with our neighbours much got fed up of their prejudiced views and contempt for anyone different. People like that bore me.

Curry and rum on a Tuesday night sounds awesome to me. Enjoy.

  15. Pretty glorious print mixing and outstanding DIY design! Great pieces on a great woman!
I'm never surprised at that barbarian behavior here, and sorry you're seeing enough of it to bug you. There are of course, as Curtise notes, reasonable and lovely people, but I'd add that of late, I'm seeing more stress and dismay on their faces.
Imagine all the ones that make you so crazy and then imagine them with guns. There has been one killing here right after another, every day this week. And there are so many we never hear of nationally.
Little children, teens, police, fire-fighters, lots of bystanders.
It's hard to get away from the news, and avoiding thinking about it is not the answer.
I fear there is no cure for meanness and stupidity. You have my sympathy, empathy.

  16. o my! how i know such dump, ignorant behavior....
germans a very great at this - as the rest of the world knows. and i too have the suspicion that it goes worse and worse every year! a dump population is easier to handle for they with the power i think. give them bad schools, lots of sugar and low level TV and they´r happy as long as it has cheap alcohol.....

clever to snap the sandals, they are pretty cute! cool shrug - thank you for the tutorial. simple but genius.
you look so beautiful with all the golden hues and turquoise sprinkled here and there over the outfit!!!!

  18. We are all just so grateful to have YOU in this world making up for these idiots. My late friend, The Master of the Universe was teaching me Cockney slang. I would call these people paper hats. I don't think there are more of them in the world so much as that they are more visible, more vocal and have no shame. The upside is that they are a sign of the disintegration of a class based culture.
I love your tie dyed cape. Is it a cape or a shawl? I didn't quite get that sorted in my mind. And the shoes are divine! Eeek utterly fabulous foreign shoes, I would shriek.
Amazing restraint you showed with your tongue but I do hope you rolled your eyes!

  19. The sandals are fabulous. It's a sad fact that there are people out there with those attitudes. I too worry that they seem to be increasing in number. But I do think that they really are in the minority, though I find this quite hard to believe sometimes!

I love your tie dyed shrug, it looks like a designer piece. No-one would believe it started life as a tablecloth.

I'm off to raise a glass to Rik and watch some Bottom.

Still manners maketh the man and woman and I hope it stands him in good stead for the future.

  24. The US has been like that for a long time,ha!

    That dress is gorgeous!!!

I, frankly, refuse to wear Nike. Phil Knight is a whiner. When students at a university he gives a lot of money to tried to hold protests against Nike (because of their dubious labor practices in other countries) Knight got all mad and threatened to withdraw financial support for the college. Nike gets no money of mine, if I can help it. I was horribly depressed to learn recently that they had bought Converse awhile ago---so I am hoarding my Converse (all bought second hand anyways) and wearing them more judiciously :)

  25. Yep, I meet twits like that on a daily basis! They are snobby as well when they need to think about what they are saying- do they have a clue? No!
You are so stylish- love this combination and I think I might turn one of my sarongs into a shrug like that! I've got loads kicking around that I don't really use!

  26. Some of the behaviour and attitudes witnessed on a daily basis can be quite depressing, it helps to remember though that I know more decent lovely people and the nasties are the unfortunately visible minority. I felt so proud when we took my granddaughter to Whitby Goth Weekend last year when stall holder after stallholder commented on how polite she was. One stallholder was giving out sweets to children and she commented that Flic was the only child that day to have said "Thank You" I was amazed - politeness costs nothing! On a more positive note those sandals are divine - I am green with envy - thank goodness that couple had no taste and put them back down! Linda xx

  31. The attitudes are like that in the U.S. too I'm afraid. Many don't give a rats butt anymore, and that makes me sad and a annoyed too. I don't understand why parents give their children unhealthy meals. I love your style.I really love vintage clothing and the jewerly....LOVE!

  32. I was intrigued by what your moan would be about...I'm thinking every bodies life would be duller without 'foreign' stuff, even those too ignorant to realise!
I love those shoes, really beautiful and all the nicer to think that they were hand-crafted.
It is a very large can of worms all this 'stuff' made in sweatshops and I certainly don't have an answer; but OMG I really give up on ignorant/selfish/add-your-title-here humans.
If someone harmed my cats and I found out who it was, well, I would see red and probably maim them! Sod the consequences!

  35. I love it when you have a moan because you are SO right. Kids haven't got a chance have they, with parents like that. I see plenty of pondlife on a daily basis and good manners are scarce, especially in children. I go out of my way to give credit to the parents when their offspring are polite. Getting back to the bloody foreign chappals...they are groovy and original! (Much like yourself.) Hope poor Disco will pull through, what utter bastards. xxxxxxxx

I grew up amongst Italians, Greeks, (former) Yugoslavs, Uruguayans, Vietnamese, Chinese, you name it....when I moved to NZ I was surprised at how white it was!! Thankfully all that foreign muck has invaded and there's way more interesting restaurants and shops nowadays!!!
    Whatever!
You look bloody delicious in that frock, and all the delightfully foreign accessories! Great idea with the bolero. Pompoms DO make eveything better! They're like polka dots, only 3D, I suppose!

  39. Ha! Bloody foreigners, they're everywhere! They're here, they're over there, they're in Thailand, India, Africa - wow, it seems the whole planet is populated by the sneaky buggers! Honestly, I'm sure my kids get scared when I start ranting at them about sweatshop wages and conditions, attitudes towards immigrants and refugees. I "set" Bella some homework the other day to find out more about ethical fashion and what it meant. She didn't dare not do it! haaahaa!! Well, if they end up taking their own kids to task about such matters, I figure my job is done. Anto's talked about "breakfast chips" and how kids line up at the chippie before school in the UK, over here it's mega-giant slurpees. Glad I'm not a teacher. Bloody bad-mannered twats everywhere - oh god I just remembered you're in the family section this Glasto Eeeeek!! I MUST make an awesome tablecloth jacket - you are gorgeous!!! xoxoxoxoxo

  47. Its good to have a moan some times sadly the issues you highlighted seem to be the way of the world. Love your shoes there smashing. dee xx

  48. I remember last year at a festival I went to which was to raise awareness of community-minded and green projects, and people threw rubbish everywhere. So flipping entitled!

Of course, the whole thing was run by volunteers, so volunteers had to clear up after the ignorant so and sos.

The problem, I think, is that some people think of themselves as the worthy recipients of whatever some benign 'authority' bestows upon them - cheap food, services, cheap clothes etc. They don't question what their own input into the equation is, or what it should be. They don't think about the real, human cost to any of their actions. These horrible people are everywhere in the world, but I think the socially-minded are in the majority still... we might always be picking up the mess, but we do it because it's the right thing to do.

You look gorgeous... your rings are awesome. The tie-dye shrug is fab. And so are you.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Agree with Donna above 100%. It's the expectation society.

Expect everything for free or cheap.

Expect everyone to sort everything out for you.

Expect that people will be fine with you being rude, cheeky or just out of order.

Expect that someone will clean up the mess after you. No they do not get paid. They are volunteers. Idiot.

I get really really annoyed by it all...

    Grrrrr

    Love you all, though xx

  50. Sad but such kind of people can be found in any country: aggressive, disrespectful, arrogant. I don't understand why someone would hate something for just "being foreign" in spite of that something being a real beauty? Love your new sandals!

  51. First, applause, applause for the dainty chappals. 'Only 40p' probably translates to 'a steal'!

Here in the States, good manners and correct speech are considered signs of elitism, except among the foreign students, whose parents have paid handsomely for them to study the natives...

  52. Vix I laughed at your description of thin leggings....ergh so over it! Sounds like you are experiencing the rise of the bogan, which is alive & well here in Australia. Love you & your foreign style. Xx

  53. Vix totally agree with everything you said in your moan ,I am glad I am not the only one that thinks that way, as my mum said when we were growing up manners cost nothing, it seems to be sadly lacking in this country !.

  61. I can't believe that given how "globalized" we have become, and the travelling people do, and the variety of cultures that are all around us, that someone would actually use the phrase "They're bloody foreign!" The chappals are much more stylish, and better made than the crap flip flops that every other woman is sporting these days. I've been surrounded by so much rudeness, ignorance and bad behavior in my neighbourhood lately it's making me not want to leave the house.

You are correct, everything is better with pompoms.

Just remember - the majority of folks aren't like that - which only makes the ones who are appear even more appalling. As for your Jumbly duo - hurrah!! All the more for us folks who don't fear 'foreign' and who don't demand egg and chips and proper British beer when 'abroad'

I have decided to not let things like that bother me anymore, the world is full of a variety of people and I cannot like them all so I let it just float over my head now and not bug me. NOW that round table cloth cape thingy, how cool would a round crocheted table cloth be in one of those?

  71. You look bloody lush. I will have a go at the table cloth shrug, it's fab.
Honest to god, if I didn't know lots of wondrous, lovely, funny, kind and intelligent people like yerself, I would think the country is full of dickheads. I hate people who chuck litter, ignore their children whilst spending all their time on their phones, and row in public. In fact I hate this whole dumb, xenophobic idiocy that engulfs this country when the World Cup is on. Don't get me started about school!!
    Loves ya.

  72. i'm astonished about people refusing to enjoy those pretty embroidered shoes, just because they're bloody foreign stuff, wtf, they're pretty well done and colorful!!
And your tablecloth-shrug is a fabulous diy, lovely tye&dye fabric, and you look so gorgeous wearing all that bloody foreign stuff. As a bloody foreign people I love it!!
Disgusting behaviours are an international plague, we have our own dose here, and it's going to doubled now with world cup (stupid people tends to embrace any occasion to show all their drunken dumbness!!)
    besos & gracias

  73. Alas, it is a world-wide trend Vix - and I mean both ignorance, bad behaviour and poor fashion choices. Luckily there are many many awesome people and bloggers to remind us that not everything has to be made in China or a Bangladesh sweat shop and come from a chain store last week. Vintage is awesome. Pre loved is more loveable and kinder on the planet. Refashioning a table cloth into a one of a kind shrug is truly innovative, environmentally kind as well as being cheap! I love your style.

  74. Bloody foreign shoes: their loss, your win!!!

  75. Ugh, such provincial attitudes. I always say ignorance is the same all over the world. I do my best to avoid it, but sometimes it pops up right in your face. Sigh. Anyway, the shoes are fabulous and her loss was your gain. :)

  76. Having been called foreign in this country on more than one occasion (and not in a complimentary manner) I have nothing but empathy for your cast aside foreign sandals. Nothing wrong with being foreign I say!
On a cheerier note, I love your maxi dress!

  77. I do see and hear things so often which make me so sad for the way society is going. The way that people in the street or the supermarket think it's ok to shout at their children; I think it's horrid.

  78. ugh what knobheads. Sadly this is a worldwide thing and bemuses me everyday here in Aus. the ignorance of some people droves me up the wall! im only 28 but i have learnt from my elders to give just as good as i receive from people like that and if i feel confident enough ill happily tell people to pull their heads in. so many people just feel like they can do whatever they like. On the contrary when i go to lovely little country towns, or the trendy parts of Sydney, there is a totally different atmosphere of neighbourly-ness, sharing and general community sprirt. its not always bad - but perhaps jumble sales bring out the shittiness of people?

  79. Looking gorgeous as always! Yay to pom poms, you have reminded me that I still have some pom pom trim to pom pomify something. I must get in with it before summer is over.

  80. Hi Vix,
Love the tie dye cape! I've used the same method many times with unused fabric. My favourite one is a too small 1980s Wallis maxi skirt in an aztec print which I unpicked and sewed back together using this idea. Such a great way of recycling things that no longer fit or have no use!

  81. Poor Disco! Who shoots a cat with an air rifle?? That is just horrible, as is all of that other behavior just mentioned! Including the "ew its foreign" behavior - you're totally right Vix, everything they were wearing would have been made in sweat shops in Asian countries... *sigh* At least it meant you got some wonderful sandals - but sometimes people are such jerks. Glad to see you supporting NZ vintage in that wonderful maxi xoxxo

  82. I encounter that stupidity here in Alaska too! so many feel it's their RIGHT to ride their off road vehicles EVERYWHERE, roaring up and down the roads at all hours of the night and day, screaming yelling, strapping their kid's car seats to the luggage rack and off they go! it's totally insane and not to mention yes, they are covered in brands--I prefer my brand old, well worn and funky!
