"Euggghhh....look at them, they're bloody foreign!" said the woman in a Primark tee shirt & obscenely thin leggings to her partner, dressed in head to toe Nike, throwing them down in disgust. I felt like pointing out that everything they were wearing probably got made in an Asian sweatshop but held my tongue, grabbed them and handed over my 40p.
My tie dyed shrug started life as a tablecloth I found at another jumble sale. I tried to do a tutorial but you'll find a far better one over at Krista's.
The turquoise pompom trim was 50p a metre from the Indian haberdashery stall on the market 'cos everything's better with pompoms.
Is it just me or is the type of ignorance displayed by the jumble sale couple steadily on the rise? A trip into town coupled with the behaviour of many of last weekend's campers show a general lack of intelligence or respect for anybody else. Feeding tiny children tubes of Pringles & fizzy pop for breakfast, throwing litter, pissing wherever they fancy, thinking its acceptable to tell another woman she's got great tits in front of their wife, spitting, drunkenness before 9am. Poor Liz's cat, Disco, even got shot by an air rifle last night. God help us if this is an example of the Core British Values the government are proposing our schools teach.
Anyway, moan over. We've stock to buy, a vintage fair in Derby on Saturday to prepare for, a house that looks like an explosion in Oxfam and I really ought to crack on with some sewing before the rest of Blogland utterly put me to shame.

But stuff that, we're pushing the boat out and having a curry from Nessa's for tea tonight. I don't know what day of the week it is any more so I'm treating today as a Friday - Cuban rum & coke, an Indian vegetable Karahi with extra green chillies and catching up with Wallander, a Scandinavian detective series with subtitles. My life would be a whole lot duller without bloody foreign stuff.

ReplyDeleteI have to say, it depresses me to hear the things that come out of peoples mouths on a daily basis; those chappals are much lovelier than any high street shoes I've seen, and for 40p! what a bargain. My friend overheard a large lady the other day in Macdonalds saying it's down to them that she's fat as burgers cost £1 whilst a salad is £4! Like macdonalds is the only place she could eat! depressing! I went to Primavera festival last weekend in Barcelona and the atmosphere was so lovely, everyone drinking and dancing but having a great time, no fighting or lewd behaviour from laddish types....pity you can't say the same for a night out in the UK!

I love the tie dye shawl you made, I wish I had kept my tie dye stuff, I still remember wrapping elastic bands around the marbles placed in my tee shirts then dipped in dye, then cutting sleeves, fraying and generally demolishing the boring tee's in to wonderful fun mini dresses, the tees I'm sure came from somewhere very far away, India most likely, your supper sounds very good,
I agree my dear but there always were a huge percentage of tossers out there. Back in the 60s a local yob went to beat up a 'queer'. No surprise when he went to prison for violence against vulnerable people some years later.

My mother was one of those people and then my daughter had a long term relationship with a Nigerian guy before coming out as gay. My mother went through the crisis and came out the other end way more open minded. Funny old life!

I am totally with you where that type of ignorance is concerned. It has been forecasted that white people will be the visible minority here Toronto within 20 years, and I am completely comfortable with that. The diversity is why I love living here.

ReplyDeleteIt can be horribly depressing to witness the behaviour and shitty attitudes of some people, can't it? I think there are folk around who aren't very bright, don't think about what they are saying, don't much care about anyone else, and mistakenly believe they can do exactly what they want, at any given time. Horrible. Gives us humans a bad name. Hatred of anything "other" is just part of that miserable, stupid mindset.
Still, I'm pleased to say I know an awful lot of people who are reasonable, thoughtful, bright and generous, who behave well and are a joy to be with. You're one of them, darling!

It is depressing that something different is undesirable or frightening to some people. And as you mention, also sad that so much stuff comes from sweatshops. I always think of it when I watch fashion segments on daytime TV when they go on about how cheap/a bargain something from the high street is and I am shouting at the TV , "Why don't you think about why it is so cheap??!!"

Gee some people really are appalling and revolting. Oh well what can you do they often are going to change but at least we can carry on with our broader and more open perspective on life. My life is full of the foreign too, much of what others laugh at, at times. As always you look amazing and you've utterly inspired some sewing and transformation to a round tablecloth I have. Heck I won't even need to trim it because it's already fringed.

ReplyDeleteI'm never surprised at that barbarian behavior here, and sorry you're seeing enough of it to bug you. There are of course, as Curtise notes, reasonable and lovely people, but I'd add that of late, I'm seeing more stress and dismay on their faces.
Imagine all the ones that make you so crazy and then imagine them with guns. There has been one killing here right after another, every day this week. And there are so many we never hear of nationally.
Little children, teens, police, fire-fighters, lots of bystanders.
It's hard to get away from the news, and avoiding thinking about it is not the answer.
I fear there is no cure for meanness and stupidity. You have my sympathy, empathy.

I would call these people paper hats. I don't think there are more of them in the world so much as that they are more visible, more vocal and have no shame. The upside is that they are a sign of the disintegration of a class based culture.

The sandals are fabulous. It's a sad fact that there are people out there with those attitudes. I too worry that they seem to be increasing in number. But I do think that they really are in the minority, though I find this quite hard to believe sometimes!

I, frankly, refuse to wear Nike. Phil Knight is a whiner. When students at a university he gives a lot of money to tried to hold protests against Nike (because of their dubious labor practices in other countries) Knight got all mad and threatened to withdraw financial support for the college. Nike gets no money of mine, if I can help it. I was horribly depressed to learn recently that they had bought Converse awhile ago---so I am hoarding my Converse (all bought second hand anyways) and wearing them more judiciously :)

Some of the behaviour and attitudes witnessed on a daily basis can be quite depressing, it helps to remember though that I know more decent lovely people and the nasties are the unfortunately visible minority. I felt so proud when we took my granddaughter to Whitby Goth Weekend last year when stall holder after stallholder commented on how polite she was. One stallholder was giving out sweets to children and she commented that Flic was the only child that day to have said "Thank You" I was amazed - politeness costs nothing! On a more positive note those sandals are divine - I am green with envy - thank goodness that couple had no taste and put them back down! Linda xx

O, I don't know if it's on the rise, or just always there and we luckily aren't around those types often enough to hear it? It's bloody STUPIDITY, flat out. I love the foreign in my life. I grew up amongst Italians, Greeks, (former) Yugoslavs, Uruguayans, Vietnamese, Chinese, you name it....when I moved to NZ I was surprised at how white it was!! Thankfully all that foreign muck has invaded and there's way more interesting restaurants and shops nowadays!!!

Its good to have a moan some times sadly the issues you highlighted seem to be the way of the world. ReplyDeleteI remember last year at a festival I went to which was to raise awareness of community-minded and green projects, and people threw rubbish everywhere. So flipping entitled!
ReplyDeleteOf course, the whole thing was run by volunteers, so volunteers had to clear up after the ignorant so and sos.
The problem, I think, is that some people think of themselves as the worthy recipients of whatever some benign 'authority' bestows upon them - cheap food, services, cheap clothes etc. They don't question what their own input into the equation is, or what it should be. They don't think about the real, human cost to any of their actions. These horrible people are everywhere in the world, but I think the socially-minded are in the majority still... we might always be picking up the mess, but we do it because it's the right thing to do.
You look gorgeous... your rings are awesome. The tie-dye shrug is fab. And so are you.

The chappals are much more stylish, and better made than the crap flip flops that every other woman is sporting these days. ReplyDeleteHonest to god, if I didn't know lots of wondrous, lovely, funny, kind and intelligent people like yerself, I would think the country is full of dickheads. I hate people who chuck litter, ignore their children whilst spending all their time on their phones,and row in public. In fact I hate this whole dumb, xenophobic idiocy that engulfs this country when the World Cup is on. Don't get me started about school!!

Disgusting behaviours are an international plague, we have our own dose here, and it's going to doubled now with world cup (stupid people tends to embrace any occasion to show all their drunken dumbness!!)

Alas, it is a world-wide trend Vix - and I mean both ignorance, bad behaviour and poor fashion choices. Luckily there are many many awesome people and bloggers to remind us that not everything has to be made in China or a Bangladesh sweat shop and come from a chain store last week. Vintage is awesome. Pre loved is more loveable and kinder on the planet. Refashioning a table cloth into a one of a kind shrug is truly innovative, environmentally kind as well as being cheap! I love your style.

I do see and hear things so often which make me so sad for the way society is going. The way that people in the street or the supermarket think it's ok to shout at their children; I think it's horrid.

Sadly this is a worldwide thing and bemuses me everyday here in Aus. the ignorance of some people droves me up the wall! im only 28 but i have learnt from my elders to give just as good as i receive from people like that and if i feel confident enough ill happily tell people to pull their heads in. so many people just feel like they can do whatever they like. On the contrary when i go to lovely little country towns, or the trendy parts of Sydney, there is a totally different atmosphere of neighbourly-ness, sharing and general community sprirt. its not always bad - but perhaps jumble sales bring out the shittiness of people?

ReplyDeleteLove the tie dye cape! I've used the same method many times with unused fabric. My favourite one is a too small 1980s Wallis maxi skirt in an aztec print which I unpicked and sewed back together using this idea. Such a great way of recycling things that no longer fit or have no use!

Poor Disco! Who shoots a cat with an air rifle?? That is just horrible, as is all of that other behavior just mentioned! Including the "ew its foreign" behavior - you're totally right Vix, everything they were wearing would have been made in sweat shops in Asian countries... *sigh* At least it meant you got some wonderful sandals - but sometimes people are such jerks. ReplyDeleteI encounter that stupidity here in Alaska too! so many feel it's their RIGHT to ride their off road vehicles EVERYWHERE, roaring up and down the roads at all hours of the night and day, screaming yelling, strapping their kid's car seats to the luggage rack and off they go! it's totally insane and not to mention yes, they are covered in brands--I prefer my brand old, well worn and funky!
